Not only does it not take the sport out of it. It adds 5 other sports. Engineering, hydraulics, machining, dreaming and operation. This is flat out insane and maybe the most awesome thing I've ever seen
That is the wildest rig ever. Extreme off roading is getting there by whatever means necessary in my opinion and he does it in amazing fashion. They should have named the rig "Slinky" because it looks like one moving through the rocks. Thanks for the video guys!
I wouldn't call it cheating, definitely in a class of its own. This is how innovation happens. The more this catches on, the more it will eventually become commonplace and you'll eventually see large corporations adapt and adopt its principles.
@WRECKED GEAR in a way it actually is somewhat common already. The Next Level lift kits allow for a decent amount of height adjustment on the fly. This is altogether similar yet very different. Would be nice to see it without the hydrostatic drive and a slip-splined drive shaft that extends/retracts based on height.
It's a prototype. Which, in his case, means that he's constantly rebuilding and fixing it. It just retains a lot of the same parts and the same identity. You could say that it "being the same rig" was a Ship of Theseus issue. However, perhaps it has always had the same V-Dub oil-burner motor and the same hydraulic drive system.
Such an legendary and epic rig!! Glad you came back to document the progress 🤘 I definitely don’t think this is cheating, it’s innovation and engineering at its truest form. But I don’t think this is the future either, it’s a unique but complicated and probably difficult concept to replicate for the average off-roader. I can see this branching off into a new sub category of offroad competition tho, like mechanical advantage buggy class or something where they are competing over unthinkable terrain no one else would attempt in a conventional rig. Excited to see what happens nonetheless!
If people want to comment on 'level' playing fields and taking the skill out of the sport, they clearly need to rewatch this video. It looks like it takes an insane amount of skills to master a buggy like this and its all about your limits as a driver, rather than the limits of the vehicle. Driven by the right person, I bet this could be unbeaten.
Hey wheeling is wheeling, this and a little girl trying to climb the curb in the city with her electric Barby jeep have my support, let's stand together to keep wheeling alive!
No matter what one thinks, wether it's as you ask at the end, you at least have to give the guy credit for an awesome build... It's thinking like he does that got us where we are... think about the ones from the 18-1900s coming up with all the machines we take for granted... tractors, trains, cars, industrial,ect... My hat's off to him & everyone who sees something that could be improved or help & just starts figuring out how to make it... As a former firefighter and 795b co, I see the potential of having a variation of his rig to do search & recovery, EMS, perimeter, ect...in areas that either are too much for other rigs or getting in somewhere and using the height for spotting... lot of potential there... Great video 🤠👍
Holy crap! Having massively extendable wheelbase controls for both ends opens up a totally different kind of driving style. You are no longer a slave to the traction of your contact patches! You can brace your downhill rear tire against a nice boulder and push the front of the car up and over the top of an obstacle until the front tire hooks around another boulder. Then, with the front hooked over a rock, you can "shrink" the wheelbase back, effectively pulling the rear up to the top as well. Incredible!
I have a project design that if I ever get the money will be the ultimate crawler. it involved the rear of 4 backhoes with the wheels hydraulically driven with the ability to curl the wheels all the way to the point of being able to walk on the rims
This is a beast! I have been a hydraulic mechanic for decades and the ingenuity put into this beast is above all else!! Just imagine what this will be like in another 10years!!!
As long as it's only used for fun and not competition, 100% I'm all for it. If used in competition it'd be like racing with an AMG One vs a Dodge Viper.
We were stoked to be able to wheel with it and show it is a legit crawler that pushes limits of off-road. most people think its just a theory and a parking lot king. WRONG!!! LOL.

This guy is a innovator and a genius, if the sport goes down that direction then so be it, if these other competitors can’t see the practicality behind this for the terrain, then they need their heads examined. If you can spend upwards of 80 grand on the low end to build these rigs then this thing has potential written all it! I’m sure once it’s refined it’ll be more and more practical and parts will start becoming available and you’ll see people grabbing ideas off this dude and trying to say they did it first but this guy is the only one I’ve seen pull this off.
He is for sure breaking the mold here. I agree, people will for sure try to copy at some point and say its there own and those will the be ones who said that it wasn't awesome.
I saw something like this at Superstition in Imperial County CA back in like 2011. I wonder if this is the same guy. I was pretty blown away when I saw it.
If rock crawlers had a race in the Rocky Mountains, this guy'd be at the finish line while everyone else is getting unstuck from obstacles he drove over earlier. I'd love to see a hydraulic system like that on a military vehicle because combat would be a lot more interesting.
Innovation is never cheating! Years ago there was the first tube crawler on the cover of 4wheel magazine call the "swiss army crawler". This has got that beat. This is the ultimate multitool of 4x4x4 vehicles!
Very cool and Innovative. Our intention has always been to get to the top, bottom or other side, so in my opinion, this guy has processed the 4wd world of true explorers.

This is probably one of the most impressive innovations in rock crawler rigs I've seen but it is a 'one of one' build for a reason. The cost to build another one like this is not only gonna be astronomically expensive, but the guy that built the 1st one is the only one that can drive it and repair it too.....on the other hand there's no point in expecting this sort of technology to take over the sport because it would take all the challenges out of the sport(it will get lonely at the top for some) and who is gonna come get you out if that rig gets jammed up? Ha ha ha in the world of rock crawling it gets weird. So many rigs doint have floor boards. the lighter the rig and the more visibility is what they are chasing. comfort is at the bottom of the list. I agree this is probably not the future. but super cool to see that there is so many more ways to do something them what is most popular.
@@WRECKEDGEAR Lots of rigs don't have floor boards? I've seen ''lots'' of rigs and can't say I remember one without a floor, I think that would kind of jump out at me, maybe I just glossed over that tiny detail. In any event that is an amazing rig, that is one of a kind and likely destined to stay that way.
What about partial inertia and weight cancellation. That would be cool for rock crawling.
right!!!
