  • I tried my best to get this thing turning out pretty. I have been meaning to get better at the whole painting/cosmetic thing, and I wanted to try the whole hydro graphics so I could add more detail to my blasters. So far I've been failing horribly, but maybe you can learn something from my mistakes.

    Ok first off bigger tank. You need room for your film. Temp of water is also important, between 80 and 85°F is where I try to keep my tank. The wetness of your paint can also be a variableI, usually I go with dupli color automotive paint on top of the vinyl die and spray it just before I get ready to dip. You don't want your paint to wet or too dry. I usually don't tape off my film prior to dropping it in the tank. It needs to acclimate to the water, but you don't want it to spread out too quickly also, so you need to mask around it quickly after you're drop. After the drop you want to let your film acclimate for one minute before spring your activator. One thing I know I've learned is you want to spray quite a bit of activator on your film. If it's thick when you dip you didn't put enough activator down. After spraying the activator I would wait 20 seconds before dipping Then make sure you rinse it off with cool water under a gentle tap after the dip to get all the glue off. Then let sit for several hours before touching. Dipping takes a lot of practice and patience. Not all dips go perfect and your film quality can also be a factor. Glad you're giving this a try and hopefully this information helps. Almost everything I've learned is from Tom's guide and experience.

      Oh hey didn't expect you to comment. Thanks for your tips. Seems the tacky paint subject is popular. I'll do ye old net of tape to drop the film into like I've seen a few people do and see if that doesn't give me better results. Water was warm, but my trouble with doing a bigger tank is I have to fill that all up from my sink, then walk it outside, then dip, then I assume I have to dump the water and restart in-between dips. I have a tank selected for this however, much bigger space.

      @@WalcomS7 Yeah I'm not a big commenter, but figured I could let you in on a few things I've learned. I understand the filming issue. For that small of part that size tank will work but just doesn't give you much room for error. If you end up dipping outside it's super helpful to have a calm non humid day. Unfortunately I'm very rarely that lucky to have both of those on the days I chose to dip. I use a cheep fish tank thermometer to gauge water temperature. Also a small fish tank net is handy to help clean the tank between dips. Words of advice is just stay calm and try not to rush. Dropping the film and then even more so placing the tape around it can be very stressful at times especially if it's windy. I have my tape prepped prior to dropping the film. If you do tape the edges of the film first make sure you cut slits into it going into the film but not through the tape. This will allow it to expand so you won't get the folds in your dip. Anyways feel free to hit me up if you haven't questions. Look forward to meeting you at Endwar.

      @tatsuhirosatou5513 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see your issues and 90% of your problems are caused by 2 simple problems, 1 your base coat, and 2 you aren't applying prepping the film properly after it's in the water. You need to let the film sit in the water for exactly one minute then spray the activator (the amount you used in the second dip was about right) then immediately dip.

    I’ve never hydro-dipped but, in dracs tutorial he dipped the desired piece after activation and then moved the tape away from the piece and kept it submerged while doing it. When the tape was moved away he then lifted the piece out of the water I would recommend watching all of his video😁😁

    Hydrodipping has been on my mind for years. I should really get the equipment for it.
    You should try paint swirling sometime in the near future- harder to get right, harder to get a 'good look', but super satisfying when you get it just how you want.

    Great attempt. Here's a couple tips.
    Second attempt was definitely better. If you are going to use tape, cut the corners so the film can still expand. Make a triangle from corner to corner and slowly lay your film in the water. Also one pass on the activator, you used way to much.
    Looks like you knew what side to lay to the water, but if you're ever in question of which side goes to the water, lick your thumb and fore finger and pinch the film. The side that sticks to the moisture on your finger or thumb is the side which is water soluble and this is the side which faces down into the water.
    Long version:
    Your base coat should flash before dipping. Not be wet, not be totally dry. Container was a good size for the items were doing. You didn't need any tape in this particular application. The tape is just used to keep the film from spreading too fast once you spray it with activator. If you use the same container you can get away with cutting the film just a 1/8 smaller than the container. Lay film in, wait 60 seconds. When you lay your film in take it from corner to corner and lay slowly, from the center of your bin. You want no air bubbles and no water to get on top of the film. Spray your activator from 8-10 inches away, only one nice pass. it will be kind of glossy, wait about 10 seconds and then slowly dip your part in at a slight angle until submerged, should take you about 15 seconds to dip. You move slow so you don't disrupt the rest of the film with moving the water. Once dipped, wait about 3-5 minutes and then rinse the part in warm water to remove the stickiness. Do not touch the part before then, but you can message it while rinsing. Let dry and clear coat.

  • @bchappyification
    @bchappyification 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Use more activator. You will see the film liquify after about 30 seconds to a minute.
    Try using automotive paint and leave it slightly tacky so the film has something to stick to.
    You don’t have to tape the film if you are using a dip tank that small. The point of the tape is to keep the film from expanding. The rim of the tank will be enough.
    You can tape in between the open areas so you simulate a more normal shape. It helps keep the film from breaking over edges so quickly.
    All in all, doesn’t look too terribly bad for a first attempt.

Angles don't take film well either without a lot of trial and error. And if you get really irritated you can always try swirl painting which can also lead to very interesting designs.

    Dip slowly at a slight angle and try to clear the water of crap b4 u bing it back up. There is no real exact way but time and temp are important factors.
