I can just imagine in 50 years or so somebody buying this piece and stripping it down and wondering why in the world would anybody ever paint this beautiful cherry wood!!
Since you asked what we thought, here goes. I’ve refinished furniture for about 9 years and have done this finish several times. It does take bit of patience and practice, this just doesn’t look “high end”. It’s streaky and the dry brush at the end is really not good. The rattan is unfinished and honestly looks awful on the inside. The cut outs are so thin the hardware can’t be placed correctly. I’m sure this will be perceived as super critical, or hopefully constructive? I’ve watched other videos where your work was really nice.
It’s not my preferred style or color but I LOVE how close it looks to the Pottery Barm piece so you shouldn’t have a problem selling it. You did do a fabulous job turning it into a designer piece! Kudos!
Thank you! I’m glad you like this look! Both looks sell really well for me so it is fun to take pieces no one else wants and try them out! thanks for watching and commenting!
It’s very attractive! I would want a smoother, neater backing for the doors. But I love rattan, it adds so much. And you got the pottery barn look down!!! Thanks!!!
I think the hardest part of redoing furniture (large or small pieces) is trusting the process Letting it dry, stepping back looking & breathing Thanks for the journey 💙
I ❤ you BOTH, SOOOO much!! I've learned a TON from you gals!! Between you two & Natalee Calahan, I've been able to make or even remake a lot in my new (final) home. So thankful for the tutorials 🎉 @@LemonstoLemonadeFurniture
Looks great! I would have used Saran Wrap, waxed paper or parchment paper to put between the rattan & the weights. But glad the paper towel pieces came off fairly easily.
The older pieces especially the top furniture manufacturers are made so much better than what you get today. They are also much sturdier so you don’t have to be so delicate moving them or tipping over.
Not a huge fan of the pottery barn finish. For the most part because it looks really sloppy on the sides and I’ve really never seen anyone do a great job at it. Also, the rattan needed to be toned down and the cuts on the front don’t look seamless. Now, having said all that, I couldn’t have gotten it to look this good. Great job, great tutorial as always.
That was a fun journey! I love that you added the rattan left over from your other project to add a little pazazz. Given it was solid wood, I would have turned the doors inside out, and swapped locations so you had a flat panel already. You'd have hinges and hinge holes to move, but you're great with that and you could still do the rattan and add a piece of straight rattan or other trim around the exposed edges. When you cut down stiles and rails, they lose visual weight and strength. Fortunately, you were adding that flat panel to compensate for strength, which was a really smart move on your part. The curve ended up very thin at the top and not the same dimensions as the side stiles and bottom rail on the door s. That texture was very cool...hope it sold for lots of money:)
Excellent finish, you truly are inspirational and have really helped me up my game! Yes, use baking sheets when using glue, as a chef I can tell you nothing will truly stick to to it. It is designed exactly not to stick 😉
I've never seen any furniture, especially one that nice at an Estate sale for $12! I find it unbelievable when TH-camrs "find" these incredible deals. You can't even find any furniture that cheap at Goodwill.
I love the rattan. I'm not a fan of the pottery barn look. It's just too trendy for my taste, but it's smart to do what sells. I definitely like this look a lot more than the look achieved with those wood grain tools. I've seen folks use the method you used and add knots that look so real, it's incredible.
Thanks for the feedback, I’m glad you like this look! Both looks sell really well for me so it is fun to take pieces no one else wants and try them out! thanks for watching and commenting!
Great job. I like it. You could use it for your television in the media room. aka Den. Next time use Parchment paper or wax paper not paper towels. You could add grass cloth wall paper or burlap type fabric to the inside of the doors to cover the particle board. Good video. Have a great week.
The point here is freeing up your mind to trust changing to a different model,Pottery Barn or whatever image. Thank you. I often think of how you started, looking to simply find a way out of debt during those covid desert times of isolation and worry. I never make lemonade thst i don't think of my friend, the couple from Texas. Stay well.
I’m a bit confused…. Why would you do a fake wood finish on solid cherry? Why not just sand down to bare wood and stain it whatever color you want…. I remember asa child, everyone painting everything, then we spent the next 30 years trying to remove the paint… It’s pretty and I like the modifications, just think wood look more high end…. But it was well done…
Wow, simply stunning! I love it and I could use this as an entry way piece or I would even consider it for my bedroom. Many different uses for sure with that style.
Beautiful I like the color and the total finished, would not suggest for beginners practice and something else first with the end result was nice I love to watch it!
Next time using the cane, try using wax paper or parchment paper instead of a paper towel. When you go to attach that panel to the door sand the edges of it to get the rattan as smooth as possible and I'm alignment with your panel. That will look more refined. Overall it looks great I love the arch idea!
Good job creating but to be honest it looks nothing like the Pottery Barn. For starters, Pottery Barn Sausalito wood grain is not covered and it has raised grain which is very prominent. It has a natural stain, no glaze. I don’t understand why this stripey glaze finish is compared to Pottery Barn.
I forgot to ask...I need to paint some furniture for my home. The HVLP sprayer you actually used in the video is differnt than the ine you have listed. Which type of HVLP sprayer do you recommend if spraying indoors (I'm in Wisconsin, so no hot garage). Thanks Kara:)
I’ve just gotten as far as the part where you’ve asked about another idea as opposed to paper towels on the rattan, and my thought is that wax paper, or parchment paper, would be a better alternative. The wax paper would probably prevent the glue from sticking to wax paper, or parchment paper, only. I think I’d gravitate more toward the wax paper the more I think about it.
Maybe parchment paper would not stick as bad to the rattan. What a nice upgrade to this buffet. The dry brushing really adds to this finish. I found this finish to be a bit tricky to get just right. I will be watching to see what you sell it for.
Love watching your videos. If you will, can you give a little advice to me. I bought a lexington locker room dresser to flip. It's smaller for the boys' room. How would you design to get a good return. I'm in Troy, Alabama . It's in good shape just cleaning and I hate the hardware or knobs
I have used ratan for inserts in shutters and have an easier way of attaching it . When it’s really wet staple it to your board. When it drys, the ratan will be really taught. No need for gluey mess😊
Suggestion: To keep the glue (holding the rattan to the backing board) from sticking to the paper towels try using waxed paper, parchment paper or aluminum foil instead of those towels. But first cover the side that will come in contact with the glue with a light coat of cooking oil. White glue and cooking oil are NOT friends and you shouldn't have to waste time picking off shreds of whatever product you use! You could also use a large baking sheet (like the pan used to bake cookies) as long as it's lightly oiled first.
hi dear!this is my first year being flipping furniture.since last month my pieces are not selling.does market gets slow around this time of year.if so when does it gets better again
It looks great actually very beautiful, a little intimidating if you were a beginner I don’t know if I would suggest for beginners to try to do it maybe practice something else first I like the color I like the handles , I love to watch!
next time do a test with a small square of the cane material...cut and immerse in warm water for about 5 to 10 minutes, that will make the cane soft and playable...but do a test first to see if change color, texture or get smaller.
The top stain color was way too dark. Had it been lighter, you wouldn't have had to dry brush over it. I am shocked that you covered the cane with paper towels. What did you think was going to happen? Of course it was going to stick! Use waxed paper or saran wrap to cover it. Better yet, a dato should have been routed into the back of the door to accept the backing. The application on the backs of the doors looked sloppy and very unprofessional. The overall appearance is nice and I do see what you were trying to achieve. I just don't think you totally hit the mark this time. But I'm sure you'll find a buyer.
It's better than what you started with ... that said the mixed handle styles detract from the finished product, as does the brightness of the caning. The door handles are nice, and I would have used a dark wax finish or lightly stained the canning. Just my personal opinion.
It could have been a buffet without a hutch. My Mother had a matching set, china cabinet and buffet, that looked just like that in a different wood. Instead of paper towels on the caning, would parchment paper be better?
Very trendy! I think if the caning was closer to the drawer colour it might look more cohesive but overall you did a great job! I’m sorry you have to keep reading comments about waxed paper, Saran Wrap, etc.! I guess the first 30 commenters weren’t enough! 😂😂
Stop by at the Pottery Barn and you’d be amazed how cheap this finish looks compared to the real thing. I would’ve refinished the real cherry wood, maybe toned it down instead of trying to copy Pottery Barn. Real wood is always more beautiful, warm and natural looking than any paint.
What did you think of this $12 save from the auction? I am always amazed at what things can turn into! How about you? Be sure to check out my favorite mirror here: www.amorhostore.com/?ref=wjctbtvj and use code Lemons10 to save 10%! You will love it just as much as I love mine!
You did a beautiful job. Not sure what’s with all the curmudgeons in the comments.
I can just imagine in 50 years or so somebody buying this piece and stripping it down and wondering why in the world would anybody ever paint this beautiful cherry wood!!
That is the truth!! Lol
Parchment paper instead of paper towels. Love the arches, much better than the strange style it had before 😊
Came on to suggest this ☝🏼
Definitely use parchment paper next time.
Since you asked what we thought, here goes. I’ve refinished furniture for about 9 years and have done this finish several times. It does take bit of patience and practice, this just doesn’t look “high end”. It’s streaky and the dry brush at the end is really not good. I’m sure this will be perceived as super critical, or hopefully constructive? I’ve watched other videos where your work was really nice.
Yeah, this seems a little over the top critical. It’s a lovely piece, and it’s done. So what do you hope to accomplish by trashing it?
It’s not my preferred style or color but I LOVE how close it looks to the Pottery Barm piece so you shouldn’t have a problem selling it. You did do a fabulous job turning it into a designer piece! Kudos!
Thank you! I’m glad you like this look! Both looks sell really well for me so it is fun to take pieces no one else wants and try them out! thanks for watching and commenting!
Looks great, but I think you should paint the back of the doors. It looks unfinished.
It’s very attractive! I would want a smoother, neater backing for the doors. But I love rattan, it adds so much. And you got the pottery barn look down!!! Thanks!!!
I know what you mean - that's definitely something I would do differently next time!
I think you should have wood filled the area where you cut off the round details on the base. You can see it. Looks unfinished
I think the hardest part of redoing furniture (large or small pieces) is trusting the process
Letting it dry, stepping back looking & breathing
Thanks for the journey 💙
yes I agree! So many times I am like "oh no!!!" but then it turns out great! lol Thanks for watching!
I love this pottery barn wood look. I was sceptical about the colour of the rattan but it all matches beautifully.
I love the new wood tone you got!!! Next level 👏
I just finished your video 5 minutes ago. Love the trash day pickups.
shes the bomb Steve!
now tell Ryan to get down here and sell this for me ; )
I ❤ you BOTH, SOOOO much!! I've learned a TON from you gals!! Between you two & Natalee Calahan, I've been able to make or even remake a lot in my new (final) home. So thankful for the tutorials 🎉 @@LemonstoLemonadeFurniture
@juliebeebe34 aww thank you! Natalee is amazing too!
I just redid a buffet, you did a fantastic job.
Thank you for a great video.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
I like it. I like colors, so this neutral buffet would compliment the colorful wall art that I have in the house
Thanks so much!
Wax paper or parchment paper may work better than the paper towel. That or a Silpat backing sheet placed between the rattan and the weights
Great idea! I will give it a try next time!
I Always keep wax paper around for glue ups.
I've never cut into a door like this!! I've always been too scared!! Loveeeeeeee it so much!
i was scared to death! lol
Better idea for glueing rattan: use a layer of wax paper, parchment paper, cling wrap, or aluminum foil - anything that doesn’t absorb glue.
Looks great! I would have used Saran Wrap, waxed paper or parchment paper to put between the rattan & the weights. But glad the paper towel pieces came off fairly easily.
The results are simply stunning! You could really get a good price for it!
The older pieces especially the top furniture manufacturers are made so much better than what you get today. They are also much sturdier so you don’t have to be so delicate moving them or tipping over.
Kara, thank you for giving a shout out to @blacksheephouse. This piece is lovely.
Thank you, Kara! Great job with this dresser! I always look forward to watching your Saturday morning videos.
Aww, thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoy them!
Ya know if you soak the Rattan and then put it on….it’s way easier and it shrinks to a nice taut look! 😊
Yes I did that. Thanks for watching!
Idea about the rattan. Apply with spray adhesive used in automotive head liners and use a brayer to adhere the two together.
I think this is an incredible transformation. You have such great vision for hidden potential. Great job!
Oh wow, what a cool technique! Thanks for the demonstration. I like it.
Thanks so much! I really enjoy sharing these techniques!

looks really good 👏👏👏instead of paper towels, you could try oven bake paper (that's waxed), so hopefully wont stick as much
I love it!
I has texture and character.❤
You always do amazing flips.
I had so much fun with this one!
My daughter loves buying used furniture and redoing it like you.
We both love your creativity and vision.
This turned out beautiful my friend!
Aww, thanks! I had so much fun with this one.

Dang girl!!!! Love this piece.
I like it! Only thing I’d do differently is to stain caning. Not a fan of the yellow. Awesome job.
Oh this was so fun to watch! I love this!! 😍
Wow! You do great work. Beautiful!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!
I love the rattan. I'm not a fan of the pottery barn look. It's just too trendy for my taste, but it's smart to do what sells. Gorilla spray adhesive. Spray the door and the backside of the rattan. Will lay flat then. I painted the door black to create a shadow for the rattan
Ah!!! Yes!!!! That is what I was looking for as far as a solution!
I’ve done the gorilla spray. I use plastic rattan and it works great.
I do like it. Maybe invest in a router. It would help with the doors
Beautiful work as always. From not so wanted to who gets it first….like night and day. Linda Beals.
I have an old one that I would love to refinish 😮❤
Wow, simply stunning! I love it and I could use this as an entry way piece or I would even consider it for my bedroom. Many different uses for sure with that style.

It looks good, I like that look so much better than just painted or painted than a transfer put on it.

What are your most go-to sanding disks for an orbital sander?

Thought you could have dulled the yellow color of the rayan and the back of the doors were not down well
Spray adhesive and parchment paper or wax paper.
Was not sure I would like this. I do! Looks great.
Looks great! Are you keeping it?
Nope! I have the black arched cabinets in my dining room. Not ready to part with those yet!
looks surprisingly good maybe use it in a family room to put a tv on top of it
That came out beautiful!

Use wax or parchment paper to press the Ratan. They will not stick.
Try using parchment paper (baking paper) over the glued rattan next time.
Love it ❤❤
either parchment paper or wax paper may help, please can you tell me the name of those door pulls, i really like them
great ideas! Let me find you the link! linktw.in/wiadwt

Another piece of quality hardwood meets the paint sprayer. 😮
Worse, another piece of quality hardwood is given a painted faux wood finish. 😢
Spray adhesive!

Why all this opinionated criticism? Gosh, she did a lovely job. Leave it be.
I like it. Very creative
For the ratan, you could have used waxed paper instead of paper towels.
Use freezer paper and put the glue on with a sponge brush.
That's a great tip! I'm going to try that next time!

Plastic packing tape anything like that won’t stick to the wood all good anyway it looks AWESOME
Really pretty!
Thank you!
What grit do you use when you scuff sand?
180 usually
You can use wax paper instead of paper towels, it won’t stick to the glue.
I missed the part were you said how many hours did you put into it ?
Did you make that canvas?
Yes I did
@ omg! Awesome…do you have a tutorial and if not can you make one!?!
So beautiful I think its better than the Pottery Barn piece!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤amazing 👏work
Aww thanks! I had so much fun with this one.
Parchment paper instead of paper towel would be a better choice
Estate sales in my area prince these at $250-300.
Very Very Nice.
