Yo agregaría sombra natural para lograr valores más oscuros, sin negro sólo se logra un violeta oscuro pero no alcanza las tonalidades más oscuras del cabello.

The painting is good. I also use blue in my Zorn, but only as a last resort. The red in your palette is too much like orange. I got the original formula vermilion from Rublev and it’s darker and more opaque. Using an orange against a blue though, helps create a black or gray monochromatically.

Broken (and pale) colors are fascinating, yet really one may achieve them even with the Thalos (PG7 and PB15). I think, however, it would be only FAIR to use any kind of red, say red oxide (PR101) instead of cadmium red amidst yellow ochre and T. white, and black, for cadmium red is a powerful and brilliant red. With cadmium and white (lead white mostly when Zorn was alive) you can mix any tints and shades (adding black) that you wish. I think, cadmium is somewhat amiss there... But that's only my point of view.

Cesar me encanta tu trabajo. Sabes que estoy comenzando con óleos pero estoy teniendo bastante problemas con el secado. No entiendo como logras pintar todo de una sola vez. Cuando pinto los colores bases al utilizar los claros arriba no cubre bien o se me mezcla con el tono de abajo ya que está fresco. Que puedo hacer? O debería comenzar con los claros y luego los oscuros?
Disculpe el atrevimiento en contestarle, yo no soy artistas de la talla de César, pero ya llevo un tiempo pintando con óleo. Y si me permite le compartiré mi experiencia con lo que he descubierto del secado, le leí, y me proyecto bastante, pues yo tuve el mismo problema, y tuve que ver varios tutoriales, hasta que después de 2 años encontré el medio perfecto. Mire, como puede ver, el óleo que aplica César es bastante aguado, puede ser dos de las siguientes posibilidades que le voy a plantear, aunque le recomiendo 100% la segunda, ya que la primera, César debió aplicarla para efectos de grabación. 1. Pudo aguadar el óleo con aguarras, esta técnica tiene un secado muy rápido, pero no es recomendable pues con el tiempo se craquela, más cuando se aplican tonos oscuros sobre claros. Aquí no se ve esto, puesto que César está pintando para efectos de tutorial,pero estoy casi segura que si utilizo el aguarrás como medio, se le va craquelar. 2. Mezcle aceite de linaza, y trementina, 1/2 y 1/2 porción por igual, y mezclarlo con el óleo. Le sugiero sea en cada pincelada que de. Es decir, tenga la mezcla de aceite de linaza y trementina en un pequeño recipiente (no exagere, haga muy poco, tipo lo que pueda succionar la pileta de un gotero, no más) la trementina es muy cara y volátil, y no tiene caso la desperdicie. Después sumerja hasta medio pelo de su pincel, y tome la porción de óleo que requiera, así como lo hace César en el vídeo. Verá usted, como le va secar rápido, y no se le va craquelar, solo no abuse con encimar tonos oscuros sobre los claros. Vea cómo lo hace César con el cabello, esa área oscura la realiza casi en su totalidad sobre el lienzo en blanco. Las oscuridades las hace mezclando más del 70% con mezcla clara (vea como oscurece la piel de la Frida con un tono grisáceo, más no tan oscuro como el cabello. Existe una 3ra opción, pero está es cuando ya usted domine su técnica. Compré Liquin, es un producto magnífico de la marca Winsor AND Newton, que su composición es presizamente aceites con líquidos (como lo que se hace con el aceite de linaza y la trementina), el Liquin es de consistencia en gel, y hace una consistencia maravillosa al mezclarla con el óleo, hágalo más o menos de un 30% Liquin, y 70% óleo. Si lo hace 50 x 50, conseguirá un efecto transparentoso también muy lindo, pero hasta ahí, no abuse a lo inverso. El Liquin es caro, y no vale la pena desperdiciarlo. En mi caso yo lo uso para encargos de retratos, y si llego a usar al inicio la opción 2 que le expliqué, y para los últimos toques la opción 3. Espero le sea de utilidad mis consejos, créame que a mí me hubiera gustado que alguien me hubiese ahorrado 2 años de tiempo en entender eso que usted pregunta.

Regardless, Black paint is a kind of Blue paint since there is an appreciable amount of Blue in its formulation. Obviously, there are times when an intense Blue color may be needed in a painting. However the bluish tinge in Black allows for more subtlety, especially where skin tones are concerned. And, it's also obvious that Anders Zorn realized this which is why he chose a Black to serve as his Blue in the first place particularly when it came to mixing flesh tones.

OH how I keep trying to mix like you do...BUT I continually get MUDDY dull colors...using the same exact tones as you do. Is it my cheaper paint? Using Gamblin 1980 for most colors...Artist's Loft for a few (Michaels store brand) and Permalba for my Titanium White.
A couple things that might help (though you may already be doing them). (1) Premix your colors with a palette knife, wiping frequently. Make little areas of the different tones/shades that you want to use. (2) Don't layer too much for the first pass. Treat it almost like a paint by number to start. You can smooth with a clean brush between the areas (just be sure to get all the paint thinner off) (3) Let it dry a few days or a week before the next layer. If you can put it where it gets some sun, all the better. Just some thoughts, not claiming to be the expert here.

Great painting, but why change and insult the Zorn Palette? So many artists seem to fear using black. Why? All the great Masters almost without exception used black, yet the word and use of black seems to strike fear with so many modern artists. Without Black, this is Not the Zorn Palette.
The problem is that the black he used had a blue tinge to it. But that same black, by name, today does not. So you look at videos, you have the paint, you cut the black with white and you get zero blue tone, even for a subtle effect. I have tried using Payne's Gray, though I do not find most versions of that have enough blue either. The main reason to use the Zorn palette today is to get the colour harmony since with just on more colour, you can basically paint almost anything. But getting the right colours is a little difficult. I emailed Golden to ask them what colours from their range they recommended, their colour tech got back to me, and was very helpful. He had never even heard of the Zorn palette, and he did not have any suggestions from their line. I was surprised.
