I always just washed my pillows like they were regular laundry. I never thought to give them special attention until watching this video. Now I'm anxious to try it next laundry day!
I've seen polyester pillows stuffing clump up, even when thoroughly dry. The memory foam pillows we have with our temperpedic are such that the foam shatters and totally loses its shape. You can take off the velveteen type cases and wash those. I keep micro fiber pillow shams covering the whole pillow, and of course, wash those.
Melissa, thanks for your video. I was wondering if it made sense to dry the pillows outside in the sun. I do this with my non-washable couch cushions and pillows because it really freshens and fluffs them up. I've read that the sun kills bacteria and helps with odors.
Hello Melissa. I just saw your video about cleaning the pillows. I purchased two pillows a little while ago, and I tried washing them once. I have a top loader, older top loader that is, and I have the option of indicating how much water I want in it. I'm sure all top loaders have this option. Anyways, I took out the air from both pillows (not much to begin with) and folded them, folded them, and put them into the washer. I set the dial for the amount of water to about, 2/4. Warm water.
Great video, I appreciate all of the tips that you provide for me. I am a person that is disorganizationally organized. and have enjoyed the tips and am applying them. My question to you Melissa is how do I keep dark sweat marks from staying in my color color and white clothes. I swear I have acid under my pits. Please help
So I have a top loader and put in my detergent and put it on full water load and put in two pillows. my washer overflowed ! The pillows displaced so much water it caused the water to overflow and got all under washer and dryer- so glad hubby caught it early or we might have had a huge problem! So caution and maybe watch the load or use lower water level. Had to toss the soap filled pillows because we couldn't risk finishing the load to rinse and spin.
Thanks for your video I have feather pillows and did not know if I could wash them. I do have a problem in this new place I have bought with all my clothes smelling moldy and I have seen to add baking soda or vinegar when you wash them now can you add both vinegar and baking soda at the same time in the same wash? I may have mold in my heat ducts do you have a video on how to clean that out? And thank you for your very informative videos.
Great video, I never though about it, How do you clean the Down and Feather pillows? also when you put backing soda on the washing mashing, Where do you put it on the same detergent dispenser or on the bleach one? Thank you!!!!
this is awesome! yes it worked great and it was wonderful to snuggle in a clean bed...pillows to mattress pad and everything in between. thanks so much
first off, You have such a pretty smile!!! :D second, Thanks for the tips! they were really helpful. I love how you can tell if its still good or not by folding it.
Hello there, first off thank you for replying back. Not everyone does reply back. I have another question. I have some pillows here that I haven't washed in along time. Can I still bring them back to life or would you say to just get rid of them.? No they aren't serta pillows.
Hey Melissa very informative video... thanks... I have a question can you wash a duvet using the same method...My duvet looks dull (sort of dirty color) but the label saids spot clean only... and I would like to wash the whole thing... can it be done?
I will admit I do need new pillows.. I used to have 14 regular pillows and 3 body pillows but since I got married I had to downsize a little.. that being said I have one particular pillow that's made from shredded up bedding egg carton looking things and it's divine! I've actually grown to love the smell of it because it's my pillow.
Question: I am using a front loading washer (at the Laundromat, in my case); how (when & where in the machine) do I add the cup of vinegar? If I put it in the basin directly, it will be rinsed away in the pre-wash. If I try to put it in the product dispenser, there isn't enough room for a cup of liquid. It overflows. Is the vinegar still helpful if it is rinsed away in the first pre-wash cycle? Much thanks!
Great video. Just a thought about the tennis balls. I will go all natural and not worry about the dye and rubber. I make my own dryer fabric softening balls. They are all natural and made from wool yarn. These would be great instead of tennis balls.
My own personal pillows never bounce back because I love for them to be thin and old. I sleep so much better. Can't stand a fluffy pillow. I do wash them regularly and my husband always wants to throw my pillow away, but I love it. Thanks for your tips. I just came across your videos and already I am a fan.
Hi Melissa, Great video, but I live in a very smalle home and my washer is a) tiny, b) a top loader w/ no center agitator & c) is plumbed for cold water wash only. I can fit maybe one pillow and a small towel in a load. Any suggestions? Or should I give up and schlep down to the local laundromat? (Ugh!)
HI Melissa, i have a memory foam pillow, i simply love. how would i clean that? the same way? and the manufacturer states is should last my lifetime... do i have to replace after a few years?
I love your videos. Looking at the video, I had questions, how do you maintain your washing machine? How to clean a washing machine. When the washing machine is very dirty, how do you clean it up or is it possible?
We are soon to be homeowners (may 2015) and I will take your cleaning hacks and alejandra organizational tips and be THE best housewife my husband could ever ask for lol
Thank you so much for doing this video. It was very useful. Can you do a follow up video on how to purchase new pillows and how to chose the right pillow for specific sleepers (side vs back sleepers)? I am always buying the wrong pillow. They go flat in a couple months. Thanks. Love your videos.
Great tips, but do you have a suggestion for someone who lives in a part of Europe where dryers are fairly uncommon? Is there a trick to air drying or tips?
I watched the pillow cleaning video and am going to wash my pillows immediately. I do have a question though, I have a top load washer without an agitator, should I just throw the pillows in or is there a certain way I should place the pillows and should I was them separately?
Hi, thanks for your vids they are so helpful! I noticed in another video you added baking soda directly in the washer with the clothes (not in the liquid detergent dispenser tray now on front loading washers). So when adding vinegar, does it go in with the liquid detergent in the tray, or in the fabric softener section of the tray, or poured directly on top of the clothes in the washer?
Like others, my hollofibre came out lumpy even with the use of tennis balls. Pillows don't have to be expensive but I don't buy cheap ones either and as my son and myself are asthmatics. Feather pillows are out.
Would you recommend using Rubber bands to help remove excess air, when placing pillows in the wash? I heard it will help to keep poly fill in place, and you wont have lumpy pillows when they dry.
I always put a pillow protector over my pillows before I put the pillow cases on. This way all the dirt/dust mainly only reaches the protector which are machine washable and extends the life of my pillows by years! This is handy because washing the protectors is much easier than washing a pillow PLUS less drying time!
So how do you wash memory foam pillows? Also, what about cushions? I had a cushion with this stuffing in it but when I put it in the washing machine it all separated and ruined it. Do they make any pillows the same way?
I have homemade dryer balls; will those work instead of tennis balls? Also, I have a lot of allergies (dust mites are one of them), would allergy covers affect how often the pillows need cleaned? Thanks! :)
Is giving it to the dry cleaners recommended. I'm not confident I can completely dry out my pillow once I wash it? I don't want any mold to grow in a moist pillow.
Melissa, I've got some expensive down pillows that need attention. What do you suggest as a method of cleaning? Do you suggest that I have them recovered? Your videos are clear, to the point, full of energy and helpful hints. Appreciate your use of time management, never a wasted moment. Wish you great success and satisfaction in your endeavors. May Life be enough.
Hello there Melissa, I very much enjoyed your video. But I have a couple of questions. Do you know how to clean a sreta pillow if so how do you do it? I have 2 of them they are both polyester on the inside & cotton on the outside. I would just like to know how to clean them w/ out messing them up. Can you please help me here?! ;3 ;3
That's the kind of pillow I talk about in this video, it doesn't matter the brand as much as it does the fill. Yours should be washer safe, just check the care label.
+Clean My Space I was just watching this video and wondered how you keep regular pillows from getting lumpy and deformed also is there any way to clean a memory foam pillow I realize you can't really get them wet but is there a way to surface clean them to help them last longer?
Okay also, how hard do you 'gold' the pillows to test them? Because especially with square pillows, if I fold them 'hard' they don't open but it I do it half heartedly, theyvdobopen.
Hi Melissa can u pl tell me if bread soda & baking powder & baking soda r they all the same? Baking powder helped me to clear the odour in my kitchen sink
Baking powder is different, and shouldn't be used. Use sodium bicarbonate, an inexpensive household and kitchen product, often known as baking soda (perhaps bread soda in your area?)
Hey Melissa How can you clean a foam matress, We just bought a new bed , new matress and my baby was sick for a few days and well now it has a few spots that really stink
Hey, Melissa, could you do a video on washing machines and required amounts of laundry soap needed. For a few quick item i acquired a 35 pound machine from china. But i got a suprise i did not expect. I picked up some jeans from a thrift store for outdoor dirty jobs instead of using my better jeans. Then washed the jeans in the new machine on a prewash and rinse made the water very soapy. (I forgot to put detergent in the new unit.) I did 3 rinses and stopped. New water each time of course. Then I took a pair of my clean jeans, fresh water no detergent and rinsed them. Same results soapy water with no soap. It seems many of us following the liquid bottle directions are over using the detergent. I now use 1/4 of the recommended amount in the regular size washer and 4to5 drops in the small portable machine. I still need to rinseto 3 to 4 times using the small unit. Residual or retained soap? I do not have a water saver unit so i can not say what the regular machine is doing on less detergent. Items from the full size machine rinsed in the small unit still require 4 to 5 rinses in the small unit even with less detergent from items cleaned on less detergent. What are your thought and experience? TK.
Does this same process work for feather pillows? I have always taken them to the dry cleaners to get them clean. I was always told by my mother & grandmother when they get wet (without the animal connected :-) it destroy the feather (pillow). Just like I thought you don't wash a feather down comforter. Please advise
I've had my neck support pillow for about 20 years and never washed it, but it still passes the spring test with ease, is it because it's a special type of pillow? Or is it really still ok?
Hi how will i wash a light throw pillow inside washing machine, because i tried to washed it, but it doesnt full submerged just half part of the pillow only. Hope to hear from you & thank you.
Hi :) Great video! Just a few question : What if I don't have a dryer? and, My pillows have feathers in them, won't the feathers break/clump up/deteriorate in the washing machine? Thanks :)
I just tryed that tip on folding down the pillows to see if they bounce back but would it not depend on the style the pillow my new pillow as well did the flip back over I know that one is good I just bought it but it did do the bounce back and some of my older pillows stayed folded How do you tell then
Whenever we wash our (probably polyester fiberfill )pillows, they come out puffed up and the fill is clumped up unevenly, leaving us with lumpy pillow. Is there any way to get them to come out of the washer and dryer in the same rectangular shape in went in?
There's a way to freshen up your pillow in between washings, or to fluff up a polyester stuffed pillow. Throw the pillow in the dryer with a wet bath towel. The towel will attract dust. You just need to run the dryer for maybe 15 minutes or so...enough that your towel doesn't get dry.
Hi Melissa:) i am just seeing this in 2019. I have a question about Memory Foam Pillow zippered covers. When i wash & dry this cover (which has some material in it) it is all lumpy!!! any ideas on how to properly do this to not have it lumpy? plz help...Ty u in advance:) All the best to all :)
It depends if your washing machine is large enough to handle your comforter, and also if your comforter is even machine washable in the first place. Check the fabric care label, that should give you a good indication of how to clean your particular comforter.
What about those pillow protectors that are waterproof and bedbug proof with zippers? If you encase your pillows with that, is there ever a need to wash the pillow itself? The one I'm referring to mainly is the one made by Protect-A-Bed...
But pillows may be filled with other materials: wool, cotton, or buckwheat hulls. None of those can be washed. I’ve tried them all and now use pillows stuffed with wool. I’m careful to always use a high thread count pillow protector under the pillowcase to keep them clean, but they can be tossed in a hot dryer occasionally to kill bacteria, mold, and dust mites.
I always just washed my pillows like they were regular laundry. I never thought to give them special attention until watching this video. Now I'm anxious to try it next laundry day!

Would you clean a memory foam pillow the same way as the regular polyester blends?
I want to know this as well....I always assumed you could not put memory foam in the washer....
I NEVER thought of squishing the air out of my pillow before washing it! Also, 2 pillows in one wash makes total sense. Thank you 💜
Hi Melissa, what about memory foam pillows? I have to change them every once in while :(
I live in the Virgin Islands so I leaned to place my pillows in the sun to "sun"natural ever week when I change my sheets...
Hello Melissa. I just saw your video about cleaning the pillows. I purchased two pillows a little while ago, and I tried washing them once. first off, You have such a pretty smile!!! :D
second, Thanks for the tips! they were really helpful. I love how you can tell if its still good or not by folding it.
Thank you for doing all of these videos for us. How do I clean my makeup drawer and how do I clean the container or drawer that the makeup is in?

Great video thank you, but 1 question, can you use dryer balls? instead of tennis balls
So awesome! Now I have to go and launder and get rid of some pillows. I KNEW there was a lifespan to them!
Does the same method for the test and washing apply to memory foam tempur pedic pillows??
Great video. Just a thought about the tennis balls. I will go all natural and not worry about the dye and rubber. I make my own dryer fabric softening balls. They are all natural and made from wool yarn. These would be great instead of tennis balls.
Hi. Our dryer only has two settings: normal and permanent press. Should I just use permanent press, whenever instructions say "low heat"?
My own personal pillows never bounce back because I love for them to be thin and old. I sleep so much better. Can't stand a fluffy pillow. I do wash them regularly and my husband always wants to throw my pillow away, but I love it. Thanks for your tips. I just came across your videos and already I am a fan.
I just realized I was using my sons account. My name is Missy
Which program of washing machine should be use for pillows(eg delicates or quick was or what else?)

Great tips, but do you have a suggestion for someone who lives in a part of Europe where dryers are fairly uncommon? Is there a trick to air drying or tips?

I once washed my pillows and they came out a lumpy mess. Better off just replacing them.
What kind of pillows were they? I'm skeptical about washing my feather pillow but if Melissa says I can, well then ...
I don't believe they were feather.
ScarletVoodoo me too, they were polyester fill blue stripes. I have a front load so no agitator. Why or why
Like others, my hollofibre came out lumpy even with the use of tennis balls. Pillows don't have to be expensive but I don't buy cheap ones either and as my son and myself are asthmatics. Feather pillows are out.
Bill Wilson Real feather pillows wash beautifully.
What about pillows used in guestrooms, do I need to replace them every 2 years as well?
They are likely used a lot less...do the pillow 'test' I demonstrated to know when you need to replace them!
How do you wash memory foam pillows? Also how do you know when you need to get a new one?

hi melissa how am I going to dry my pillows without a dryer
derin hiemeleers hair dryer
Jk
in the sun
BeautyGyaan it's Sept, there's no sun where I am. 😆
Since it's only 2-3 times a year, take to a laudramat and dry them in a big oversized dryer all at once.
Hi Melissa, I have feather pillows and those seem to all be artificial fibres. Any advice specific for feather pillows?
I have homemade dryer balls; will those work instead of tennis balls? Also, I have a lot of allergies (dust mites are one of them), would allergy covers affect how often the pillows need cleaned? Thanks! :)
Is giving it to the dry cleaners recommended. I'm not confident I can completely dry out my pillow once I wash it? I don't want any mold to grow in a moist pillow.
Does the pillow test apply to square pillows as well? Or do they more easily flip back open because of their shape?
Hi Melissa, I have a pillow that the tag says 'no washing' in bold print. Do you have any ideas I should try? thank you
Melissa,

Loving your videos, I have a question, Usally pillows clumps up into a ball after drying them, any idea what is happening???
I am bad allergic asthmatic so pillow covers are a must! And I swap out pillows and buy new three times a year!
How do you clean memory foam pillows?
Hand wash in cold water and let them air dry.
Nice video. Thank you for the info. However you briefly mentioned memory form pillows but didn't say how to clean those. Any tips?
As you often ask your viewer, May you suggest us how to clean the fabric briefcase exterior an interior??? I really apprecite it. Thank you.
Hey Melissa How can you clean a foam matress, We just bought a new bed , new matress and my baby was sick for a few days and well now it has a few spots that really stink
i don't have a dryer, can i air dry my pillows?
Probably, I'm gonna do that
Yes you can! But not if you suffer from allergies. I use a dryer. Two pillows at the time.
Hey, Melissa, could you do a video on washing machines and required amounts of laundry soap needed. For a few quick item i acquired a 35 pound machine from china. I was always told by my mother & grandmother when they get wet (without the animal connected :-) it destroy the feather (pillow). Just like I thought you don't wash a feather down comforter. Please advise
Hey can you make a video about how to clean your bookbag
Yeni Hilario she has a video on that
I've had my neck support pillow for about 20 years and never washed it, but it still passes the spring test with ease, is it because it's a special type of pillow? Or is it really still ok?
Can u make a video on how to clean a cooling pillow? I have a Columbia cooling pillow and i can’t find anything on how to clean it!
Hi how will i wash a light throw pillow inside washing machine, because i tried to washed it, but it doesnt full submerged just half part of the pillow only. Hope to hear from you & thank you.
How do you clean memory foam pillows and how often?
What do you do if you don't have a dryer though? Is it okay to put on the line?
What about wedge pillows? Follow same method or Do you have a video on that?
How do I clean memory foam pillows? My pillows are made of memory foam cut in to chunks. What detergent do you recommend?
Do you have tips for washing pillows when you dont have a dryer?
what about aqua gel pillows - what is their lifespan and how clean them?
Hi :)
Great video! Just a few question :
What if I don't have a dryer? and,
My pillows have feathers in them, won't the feathers break/clump up/deteriorate in the washing machine?
Thanks :)
you could probably donate a regularly used pillow to a animal shelter.
You absolutely can!! This is something we have done in the past and they LOVE receiving these types of donations :)
Homeless shelters (of the human variety) appreciate them as well. Sounds kinda ick, but think about it for a sec.

Clean My Space does wash pillow sheet with vinegar and baking soda make my pillow sheet very clean but why i still smell the odour
Do all of your solutions work for king size pillows?
What if we did not have a washing machine and a dryer?
Do you have a recipe for pillow case disinfectant between wahes
I just tryed that tip on folding down the pillows to see if they bounce back but would it not depend on the style the pillow my new pillow as well did the flip back over I know that one is good I just bought it but it did do the bounce back and some of my older pillows stayed folded
How do you tell then
Whenever we wash our (probably polyester fiberfill )pillows, they come out puffed up and the fill is clumped up unevenly, leaving us with lumpy pillow.
Ive been using the same pillow since I can remember
Nicky asked the question, and at the end she thanked Carrie.
Super video information though!
i noticed that as well haha
She was testing us. We passed.
Hi Melissa:) i am just seeing this in 2019. I have a question about Memory Foam Pillow zippered covers. When i wash & dry this cover (which has some material in it) it is all lumpy!!! any ideas on how to properly do this to not have it lumpy? plz help...Ty u in advance:)
All the best to all :)
It depends if your washing machine is large enough to handle your comforter, and also if your comforter is even machine washable in the first place. Check the fabric care label, that should give you a good indication of how to clean your particular comforter.
If you have the dryer ball things should you still use tennis balls?
dear melissa can i use detol in the washing to kill any bacteria
Lots of great info here. I'm guessing that after the first washing, they won't pop open the same.
Would this cleaning apply to latex pillows as well?
hello Melissa my question to you is what do you do if you can not find your favorite pillows
any suggestions on memory foam pillows?
