You have no idea how much I enjoy this channel
This version could easily pass for Castlevania music.
I was just thinking this! Sounds like a sibling to Rondo.
And to think that many years later, he composed some of the tracks for Castlevania Portrait of Ruin along with Michiru Yamane.
@@Lostcontroller I did not know that. I'll check it out.
@@Lostcontroller I believe both contributed to Half Minute Hero on PSP as well.
I believe Yuzo did mention Actraiser's soundtrack being inspired by Castlevania III on his twitter.
4:32 "Jungle" has a Streets Of Rage vibe while "Space Fight" could have been a fine theme for ending credits of Revenge Of Shinobi =]
Whenever I hear the name Yuzo Koshiro, I'm never disappointed by the quality of the music he composes.
Legacy of the Wizard/Dragonslayer IV is seemingly one of his lesser known works, so worth a listen if you haven’t.
Unbelievable how good the PC-88 Soundboard II is! Great video, thanks for posting!!!
Koshiro has always been a fan of the Yamaha 2608 and kept composing for this processor until today. For example, the entire Etrian Odyssey soundtrack has been composed on PC-88. I wish Actraiser had been available on MD because the FM sound has so much more character.
Yep. There are also four sample tracks available from Etrian Odyssey that can be played on the PC-88 using Mucom88.
Great stuff. I love Yuzo's work. Misty Blue has a great soundtrack as well as The Scheme, another cool PC-88 game. Actraiser and Super Adventure Island are two of my favorite SNES soundtracks. He's a legend.
Really interesting video, nice work! Even after all my ActRaiser research, these PC-88 FM synth arrangements strangely alluded me so it’s really cool to hear about this. I agree that Fillmore track sounds so much like the Famicom VRC6 custom sound chip which is really crazy since I had no idea the PC-88 soundboard had voices like that. Pretty cool!
When the Basement Brothers publish a new video I stop what I'm doing to watch it! Keep up the good work.
This was very interesting. Please keep producing amazing and unique gaming content that’s unlike any other gaming channel on TH-cam.
Always loved Acraiser's soundtrack. This sounds amazing!
Incredible, I had no idea. Thanks for this.
so glad i subscribed to this channel!
I love Yuzo's work guys. His just a master in his craft of music. One of my favorite composers of all time. 8^)
Anthony..
Interesting you said how a Sega Genesis version might sound like. I actually get serious HuCard chiptunes vibes from these! Actraiser on PCE would've been amazing!
The FM synth used here does have kind of a weird PCE-like sound to it, but in actuality it is indeed FM synth just like the Genesis uses. The Yamaha sound chips used on the PC-88 and Genesis are not identical, but the FM channels sound the same or very similar. On the Mucom88 software I showed in the video you can also use the PC-88 to play some Genesis tunes like Streets of Rage and Revenge of Shinobi, and they sound almost the same as they do on the Genesis. (Biggest difference is the PSG/SSG channels.) So, anyway, that's why I said it might be similar to what a Genesis version might sound like.
Oh wow! This is definitely close to what ActRaiser could have sounded like on Megadrive ❤Koshiro truly loved his fm synths huh
"Some of you might be skeptical. 'How do we know for sure that they were really produced using the PC-88 soundboard II?'"
I think you are seriously overestimating the distrust of your audience and I love that about you.
Some of us are history majors/teachers, so sources always matter, as a matter of course.
another awesome suprise in my sub box. thank you!
Thank you so much for this video.
space fight sounds like it could fit as a credits level theme taking place in space. after all you leave the planet after beating the game.
Lol I was just about to ask why the PC-88 CD drive looked just like the PC Engine CD drive. You read my mind!
Eveyone always talks about Streets of Rage when Yuzo is mentioned, but for me Actraiser was his crowning achievement. The fact he was able to get what sounded like a genuine orchestra sound from the SNES was unbelievable for the time. That that kind of sound was a possibility from a catridge game was unheard of at the time. Of course other games would employ similar soundscapes like Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 2 & 3, and Chrono Trigger, among others, Yuzo did it first with Actraiser, and in some ways better. Quite the accomplishment.
Woah this is the coolest! Thanks for finding this and sharing!!
Thanks for making these videos, I didn't know much about any of this but these videos have gotten pretty interested in this stuff. Your videos are very well done on the pc88 stuff and make it easier to understand.
Oh man if only we got a megadrive version of Actraiser, it would sound a LOT like this!
Amazing!! Thanks for sharing such information.
Amazing video!
This is awesome! What a cool bit of gaming history trivia, and such a great soundtrack.
Great video!
Actraiser on Mega Drive would have been awesome
Great Stuff!

I composed this "Music" for the man who lost his life in the desert.
"Music" has mysterious powers. By listening people can calm their hearts and soothe their pains.
Your video is a true gem of contribution to the anals of vgm. Totally awesome!
Thank you. Yes, we are very anal on this channel.
@@BasementBrothers I hope you understood my compliment. Looking back in my comment I did mean to say "annals".
This soundtrack slaps asf and should make its way into every remake
You get extra points for the soothing song idea and Bill and Ted reference!!
Very interesting video!
I have to assume you'd be aware of his channel already but just in case Yuzo Koshiro frequently uploads fm synth productions and other classic synth stuff on his youtube and twitter, heavily recommended!
This is great your video i dont know about pc 88 paradise but is awesome.
1:30 and then along came the remake
I'd love to see a video about Misty Blue, love the style.
FYI more tracks from this are on that Early Collection Box of Yuzo Koshiro work that BEEP! released a couple years ago.
Wow. Looks like you're right! I've never heard any of those.
Yuzo Koshiro is genio I lover❤❤❤❤😊
Jungle sounds like something out of Streets of Rage.
this is AMAZING
now fun fact, if you want to hear "Fillmore" on a real genesis sound chip, just look for a sonic hack by the name "Sonic - Hellfire Saga"
The first stage soundtrack is a Pseudo Metal version of this theme.
Koshito was a genious in terms of getting the most of the audio hardware he was working atm
Music sounds almost exactly like an NES Castlevania game!
wow the music so super cool, sound similar to castlevania blood liines
It would be interesting to compare this to the remake soundtrack as well.
I thought I remembered hearing he also did retro remixes in PC-88 style for etrian odyssey? so sounds like he still loves the hardware. also I was wondering if that was the PCE CD attached to the PC-88!
Yep! And here's the video explaining it:
th-cam.com/video/N6SX3wkJRtc/w-d-xo.html
Ah, the title made me think it was going to be a showcase of the music Koshiro ripped off. The end credits theme is the most famous example.
The PC 88 games seem much more advanced than Commodore 64 or Apple IIe games as their contemporary
What would happen if, Microsoft + Nintendo + Sony + sega = put aside their differences and made a super ultimate console together ?💯✔🤔🤝💡
That's called a monopoly. You don't want that. It's called competition. And it's called running a business.
Love this info you out out
Yeah the music is different on here from the Super Nintendo version 🎮🕹😀👍🏾
The CD drive looks just like the PC-engine CD rom drive

1:44 begins here
I still prefer the SNES version of the soundtrack, but this one is kind of cool too.
It would be cool if someone made a fan homebrew of Actraiser for Genesis, kind of like the Megaman X for Genesis project, and put in the FM music tracks. Here's a link to that MMX project for anyone interested: th-cam.com/video/idHWNe4vS20/w-d-xo.html
Is actually a little bit same like the Super Nintendo soundtrack but it sounds like a remix a Little Bit 🎮🕹😀👍🏾
SPOILER: It doesn't have Birth of People. :/
I dunno about you guys, but the first track sounds like a PC Engine remix lol
Soundtracks sound a lot like Castlevania from Famicom
I wonder if it's possible to hack the SNES game so it plays this crunchier sounding PC-88 music?
Someone could do an MSU-1 hack using a recording from the PC-88 I suppose. That would only be for FXPAK/SD2SNES owners.
@@BasementBrothers I have an FXPACK!
@1:44 filmoa
The game look reminds me of ghouls and ghosts goblins
