Well, Dead Poets Society is an absolute stinker. Ham-fisted, boorishly obvious and schmalzy; one of the most inexplicably and severely overrated films I've ever seen. But Hawke is an incredible actor and filmmaker (The Good Lord Bird is just totally fantastic) and I agree that barring DPS (which he was least responsible for!), his batting average is just out of this world. Very, very talented and superlative taste in projects.
ethan always talks about the other important people involved in each film before speaking about himself. he speaks so passionately about each project he's a part of, a true master of his craft and is leeeeeagues above every other actor in this series.
I really like how he really BREAKS DOWN his characters with deep thought and vivid opinion and talked to the audience like an old friend. Also really like he give credits to all the writers in his movies
Gattaca is literally one of the best science fiction movies ever written. The soundtrack is one of the most haunting and amazing pieces of music I have ever heard in my life. They didn't spend *nearly* enough time talking about it.
i 100% agree, tho i have already listened to him talk for hours and watched his movies and movies he was casted in. Truly a suberb actor and great, beautiful person :)
As having seen most of River Phoenix's movies I can't really blame him. He was masterclass at age 16 (Stand By Me). He would've been regarded as the Pachino of his generation today,
I walked by Ethan Hawke in Brooklyn a year or 2 ago and he was literally just standing in the middle of a block party talking to strangers on the stoop of their walk-up just enjoying the day. He's the coolest guy.
This is a serious question: Why do you say "he is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood"? He has 4 Oscar noms in addition to other acting and writing noms and some hollywood Awards Wins, he's made some terrific movies w/ A+ directors some of whom have sought him out for the role. How is that "underrated"? Maybe Out There in Audience-movieland - ? Anyway, just really curious about that characterization. I think he's one of the best actors of his generation; have seen a lot of his movies and when I see he's cast, I take a serious look because, well, I rate him very-highly! W/ respect.
JK N when you ask someone who are the best actors around, what are the chances of Ethan being named? That’s how I see who is underrated or not. But as all things, underrated and overrated are different views for everyone
Thing is in some ways they're kind of starting to remind me of like Inside The Actors Studio, but when it got to seasons like 7, 8 and 9, and so on. For as often as the series is being done, you're kind of running out of actors that truly warrant such a deep dive. I've seen some thumbnails for ones with actors I like perfectly fine, but "their iconic roles"? Iconic? Some of these people they've featured have accumulated MAYBE 2-3 really indelible characters so far, at best. Or, I guess they can do more, just don't pretend it's a slew of incredible roles.
I drove him twice in my cab. Randomly, couple of years apart. Nicest guy. We talked both times. I told about it to another passenger, and she's like: "Oh yeah, I ran into him a few times on the street and coffee shops and such..." Apparently when he's in NYC he just goes around his business almost like regular people.
Thanks for sharing dmitriy. He seems like a very humble and thoughtful guy. I get the sense he's fascinated with people and characters and this feeds into his personable personality. He must've been a joy to have as a fare!
Absolutely love the "before" trilogy. Up there on my all-time favorite movies list. The fact that I'm the same age as the characters and have seen all the movies as soon as they came out helps. They really capture the maturity level, complications, ideals, etc. of the character's ages, and while to me they're snapshots of their exact years and times of my life, there's still an incredibly timeless aspect to them.
Yeah! I’m currently between the ages Before Sunset and Before Midnight and currently finding the latter movie too difficult to rewatch. It really covers the life milestones to a painful degree.
For anyone who hasn't seen his movie Gattaca, please watch that. I's easily his best movie and probably the most underrated movie of all time. Such a good hidden gem.
It's available on Netflix if you haven't seen it yet! So please watch it and I’m so thankful my biology teacher showed it in class cause wow, what a film! ❤️
@@QUARTERMASTEREMI6 it's my favourite sci-fi film. It's simple. No he is not underrated. He just isn't problematic or fame thirsty like some other hollywood celebs who feel the need to be in the spotlight all the time. Some are in for the art and not the spotlight.

@@nicolaypastore You think Ethan and Keanu spent millions on superficial things to look young...? Two of the most reclusive, humble, and openly conscious actors there is. There's a thing called genetics, they exist even in Hollywood. People can just "age gracefully" hence the existence of the saying.
The bathroom scene is also one of my favorite scenes in Training Day; Mr. Hawke’s performance conveyed the gravity of Alonzo Harris’ betrayal. In that moment, you felt for him. He CRUSHED it in that film, but THAT scene in particular.
His brain!! Those blue eyes. His crooked teeth. That suit. Gah. But mostly, he's so well spoken. I've read two of his books. He's the ultimate Scorpio man.
--"it's amazing that Maya looks just like you and Uma!" --"well, yah, people act like celebrities are different, but most people look like their mom and dad........."
Well, the difference is that millions of people nod and agree to the comment Maya Hawke looks like Uma and only about 20 people know both our parents and ourselves and can agree to that idea.
Wow, what a gracious dood. You can tell he's still a fan of actors, artists, movies and movie making. Not jaded or pretentious -- He seems truly sincere.
Actually, directors, critics and fans love him for his works. Fortunately his profile is not in superheroes trash movies because of his eloquence and ethics which are not about blockbusters or high salary.
I saw you not to long ago but not sure where was it on a Asian andy video or was it those shark attack videos? Or that XX tenaction really don't remember
Completely different, they are complete opposite. Hanks it the ultimate Hollywood actor who make these commercial movies. Ethan is much more on the fringe.
This interview/analysis has proven me wrong. I always really liked him as an actor, but always had the impression he was up his own butt. Seems as though he's much more well rounded and down to earth than I gave him credit for. Glad I'm not always right, lol.
haha ... good honest post. To me his persona has always reflected a certain humility and down-to-earthness that makes him perfect for so many roles that used to be described as "everyman" kind of roles.
Interviewed him once and at one point we got sidetracked once he learned that I was in Atlanta and that he attended elementary school here. He's a down-to-earth guy.
same! i don't even know why i used to have the impression that he was an arrogant person and self-centered but thanks to this interview i think my love for him has grown so much him as a person is a very lovely, kind and down-to-earth guy he likes to give credits to his co-stars more than he gives to himself and he just admires everyone he's been involved with i kinda get the impression he could be your long lost hilarious yet admirable uncle
Robin Williams apparently considered his role as John Keating as the one role he truly wanted to be remembered for, and the character that was closest to who he was in real life. Incredible film.
Hawke should've won Best Supporting Actor for Training Day. I was happy that Denzel won the Oscar but Hawke was absolutely surreal and incredible in that film as well and had perfect chemistry with Denzel. Pure and authentic. I personally think that's his best role in his entire career.
Ethan thank you for being such a gifted actor. I appreciate more his 90's roles but he made me love movies. Being always a complicated and suffering characters (Finn in Great Expectations, Vincent in Gattaca, Ishmael in Snow falling on cedars) his lines are imprinted in my mind for his exceptional performances. Sir, you are admirable.
Out of all of these breakdowns I've watched, Ethan's has been the best. He is really breaking down the characters. I love hearing him speak about his roles. And everyone should watch Predestination. Very good flick!
How has this man remained so down to earth and authentic surrounded by Hollywood? A comment he made encapsulates him "artsy, without being airy fairy". One of few American actors that marries both the strong man and artistic aspects. This honestly blew me away, without surprising me. Just brilliant.
Him and Jude law so good in that. But really him and Denzel played off each other so well. You had to really be a good actor to play an LA white cop and no one thinks you're racist.
It was so good to watch this professional, talented dude who's so dedicated to his profession. Great guy. Love how highly he can speak of his colleagues. That marks a good person.
Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far?
Ethan seems like such a genuinely cool guy, the kind of guy you could just hang out with and tell stories over a couple beers and have an amazing time. He truly is one of the greats of our generation.
Rami Malek was great, but Bradley Cooper has never been that great to me. He's fine, but he's never been anything other than "pretty good" to me. Ethan Hawke needs some more recognition as a talented artist. That being said, the Oscars ain't fair. Toni Colette is phenomenal but doesn't win awards or turn heads at her name and she was brilliant in Hereditary. No nomination. Often times the best movies don't win awards and remain the runner up or just an honourable mention.
I rewatched this after having the pleasure of meeting Ethan at the Woodstock Film Festival recently where he got an award. He's really amazing and so interesting to listen too. One of my favorite actors now.
I like the ones where the actor has at least 20+ years of experience like this one and Hugh Grant’s. There have been some where actors have only been in a handful of movies or are a bit young and have not much to contribute about their experiences.
9:11. when the guy says: Maya looks exactly like the both of you, and you see Ethan smile and look proud, that just melts my heart, such a kind down to earth guy! would love to just hang out with him a night just swaping ideas and chill
The whole thing about 'casting for the right colour' kinda blows my mind... it's so simple and so genius, no wonder those last scenes were so moving... I think you could see this with Carrey in the Truman Show as well.
Yes, it's very inspiring. It just made me feel so powerful, when all my family says I have no chance to become a pro boxer, but I still fight for my dream
I know him for the Before Trilogy, Gattaca, Dead Poet's Society, etc., but I'll be damned if Training Day isn't an American classic. He's one half of the incredible duo that made it such a beloved film. Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington have an incredible chemistry together. It's undeniable in the few films they've been in together.
Good lord, I had no idea how humble and knowledgeable Ethan Hawke is. I could listen to him talk on film for hours. What a cool dude, constantly giving credit to the usually unseen people (directors, stuntmen and writers). Seems like a stand-up guy
I always love hearing him talk. Whenever he is a guest on a talk show, he's so entertaining to me. Some people have the ability to make you happy by just being in their presence. Another example is Morgan Freeman.
Thank you very much for your lovely words. I'm pleased to meet you on this platform. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far?
I love how instead of talking about himself, he spent the entire video giving credit to others. What a cool dude

There's a thing called genetics, they exist even in Hollywood. People can just "age gracefully" hence the existence of the saying.
Love Gattaca. Don't undersell yourself in Training Day. That bathroom scene was the only scene I still remember today.
melvina628 Gattica is a quintessential dystopian future story. Watching it brought me back to my youth as a voracious Sci-fi reader
melvina628 nah the scene he drives that monte carlo is one of the best scenes ever made
@@transikk I will refresh my memory.
The bathroom scene is also one of my favorite scenes in Training Day; Mr. Hawke’s performance conveyed the gravity of Alonzo Harris’ betrayal. In that moment, you felt for him. He CRUSHED it in that film, but THAT scene in particular.
@@BobbyFett3994 True.
Gattaca. My absolute favorite film of all friggin' time.
Breaks my heart that it didn't get the recongnition it deserved.
I wanna have an Ethan Hawke movie marathon now!
I’m in Film school and enjoying many of these videos and impressed with how articulate, honest and passionate Ethan is about his art.

"I never saved anything for the swim back." - Gattaca. Amazing movie.
Yessss!! 🙌 Gattaca is Top 10 all time 👏
The lack of chronological order here drives me nuts.
Probably the predestination effect😂
YUP
AmeagleWard I only liked this cause it was the hundredth.
yeah even The Before Trilogy movies were listed out of order...whyyy
🙄
"that script was ice hot"
- Ethan Hawke.
Jordan TRusso I love his enthusiasm
He’s right though, training day’s script was fire on ice
i remember Denzel being on Letterman and the first thing he said was "We had a TIGHT script"
His brain!! Those blue eyes. His crooked teeth. That suit. Gah. But mostly, he's so well spoken. I've read two of his books. He's the ultimate Scorpio man.
Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far?
@@ethanhawke8369 Hey Ethan whats up.
What's wrong with his teeth?
@@Mikeplaysdbdnothing. They look very normal. It’s just most celebrities have creepily perfect looking teeth.
I think Ethan Hawke is the best "underground" actor
Alonso Herrera Him and Joaquin Phoenix.
Ive always liked him. Great actor and seems like a legit dude.
Underground? Actually they are internationally famous, any actor not underground would kill for having their trajectory.
yeah, nowadays underground means not playing a superhero
yes.
--"it's amazing that Maya looks just like you and Uma!"
--"well, yah, people act like celebrities are different, but most people look like their mom and dad........."
Oda Lanizi yeah that was kinda a dumb comment
but a common one lol
Most actors would of taken it as a compliment, but Ethan has a level head on his shoulders.
Well, the difference is that millions of people nod and agree to the comment Maya Hawke looks like Uma and only about 20 people know both our parents and ourselves and can agree to that idea.
nay jay-Ummm no she looks like both of them
He spends so much time complementing the other people he’s worked with and building them up..that really says a lot about a fella.
Wow, what a gracious dood. You can tell he's still a fan of actors, artists, movies and movie making. Not jaded or pretentious -- He seems truly sincere.
*Training day* is a classic movie🔥
*Ethan hawke* is One of the most underrated actors of this Era🐐
Actually, directors, critics and fans love him for his works. Fortunately his profile is not in superheroes trash movies because of his eloquence and ethics which are not about blockbusters or high salary.
I saw you not to long ago but not sure where was it on a Asian andy video or was it those shark attack videos? Or that XX tenaction really don't remember
Ethan Hawk is definitely one of my favorite actors, because he is so believable in every role he plays. He really inhabits his characters.
Ethan Hawke is the A24 version of Tom Hanks
+Jake D Ignore the other response you got about Tom Hanks being a pedophile. The root of this claim is as ridiculous as it gets.
what a great analogy! couldn't have said it better myself.
The accuracy.
I am in awe of how on-the-nose this analogy is. Well done!
Completely different, they are complete opposite. Hanks it the ultimate Hollywood actor who make these commercial movies. Ethan is much more on the fringe.
a humble human being, who never overacts, inserts himself into a role, taking care to be believable and not absurd, an actors actor
"I like people like me." Ethan Hawke. Brilliant.
Same! I have always assumed he's a prick. Don't even know why I thought that.
Interviewed him once and at one point we got sidetracked once he learned that I was in Atlanta and that he attended elementary school here. He's a down-to-earth guy.
He aged well, and probably decided on his own to stop being pompous.
same! i don't even know why i used to have the impression that he was an arrogant person and self-centered but thanks to this interview i think my love for him has grown so much him as a person is a very lovely, kind and down-to-earth guy he likes to give credits to his co-stars more than he gives to himself and he just admires everyone he's been involved with i kinda get the impression he could be your long lost hilarious yet admirable uncle
Dead Poets Society everyone should watch it.
hughm53 They don't make movies like that anymore unfortunately.
hughm53 gonna have to chexk it out
Robin Williams apparently considered his role as John Keating as the one role he truly wanted to be remembered for, and the character that was closest to who he was in real life. Incredible film.
spacetime8 Oh, Captain, MY Captain! *Tears
spacetime8 awwww
R CM-His 80's ones were also good
Out of all of these breakdowns I've watched, Ethan's has been the best.
Gattaca is something we’re lucky to see yknow
Chillillton great movie
Gattaca is definitely on my top one of my favourite movies, and i'm very picky on my movie taste.
I love Gattaca. It still makes me cry when I watch it
jude law was so amazing in there too. love it
Him and Jude law so good in that. But really him and Denzel played off each other so well. You had to really be a good actor to play an LA white cop and no one thinks you're racist.
Ethan looks like he has a great understanding of the film process. He would be a good director
He is. He has made both feature and documentary films.
@@Vortal_Cord can u name a few so I can check them out

Hello there. Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far?
I've always said Ethan Hawke is the thinking man's Brad Pitt.
Haha. Who’s the thinking man’s version of you?
lol
What does that even mean?
He is wayy hotter than Brad Pitt's ever been. And better actor. Brad Pitt could never have done the Before-trilogy.
How do people not know this ANCIENT phrase? lol.... it's pretty self explanatory.
He's almost having an out of body experience, like he is floating above his body describing his life in past tense
What
LMFAOOOO EXACTLY THE WAY HE TALKS SO FAST AND HE ENTHUSIASTICALLY REMEMBERS EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED IN THE PAST WITHOUT A DOUBT WOW

Ethan seems like such a genuinely cool guy, the kind of guy you could just hang out with and tell stories over a couple beers and have an amazing time. He truly is one of the greats of our generation.
Underrated and my favourite, he's awesome as the father in boyhood
A real big fan of Ethan's. This guy needs to be in more movies. Really awesome dude.
More movies? lol He'll never have time to sleep.
I’ve unintentionally seen a lot of movies with him and they have all been super good. Especially Gattaca, it’s a masterpiece

I can't still believe that he was not nominated as best actor for First Reformed, but Rami Malek and Bradley Cooper did. The Oscars suck.
Agree. First Reformed is a masterpiece!
Can't stand Bradley Cooper. A no talent hack imo.
@@Kaipyro67ALT that movie was incredible.
I rewatched this after having the pleasure of meeting Ethan at the Woodstock Film Festival recently where he got an award. He's really amazing and so interesting to listen too. One of my favorite actors now.
Predestination was a great movie, wish more people would watch it.
Certainly one of those that manages to complicate stuff even further whenever you think you have guessed the twist.
It's a classic already. A must watch.
100%
It's a weird movie with an important lesson
When I seen that movie, my God I LOVED it!!! It was so great!!!
What a beautiful soul. God bless Ethan Hawke
I like the ones where the actor has at least 20+ years of experience like this one and Hugh Grant’s. There have been some where actors have only been in a handful of movies or are a bit young and have not much to contribute about their experiences.
I love how passionate Ethan Hawke is when talking about cinema. You can tell that he is really into it both spirit and body. Legend.
Have you ever watched the interview he did on the Graham Norton show? He goes into (in my opinion) of why he is the way he is.
9:11. when the guy says: Maya looks exactly like the both of you, and you see Ethan smile and look proud, that just melts my heart, such a kind down to earth guy! would love to just hang out with him a night just swaping ideas and chill
"cast for the final color" whoah, that's a great note on casting
I am keeping that one as well.
this is someone really in love with the acting and film world, talented and humble, he looks like a cool guy
Predestination is MASSIVELY underrated!
Always had a respect for Ethan Hawke, even more after this interview

The whole thing about 'casting for the right colour' kinda blows my mind... it's so simple and so genius, no wonder those last scenes were so moving... I think you could see this with Carrey in the Truman Show as well.
Gattaca is woefully underrated.
It's in my top 5 films list, easy.
The movie is a masterpiece.
Yes, it's very inspiring. It just made me feel so powerful, when all my family says I have no chance to become a pro boxer, but I still fight for my dream
Fantastic film
I have always loved Gattaca! It was just before its time.
So true
I know him for the Before Trilogy, Gattaca, Dead Poet's Society, etc., but I'll be damned if Training Day isn't an American classic. He's one half of the incredible duo that made it such a beloved film. Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington have an incredible chemistry together. It's undeniable in the few films they've been in together.
