USB or WiFi. Note that WiFi is wireless Ethernet. Ergo, you could also use an Ethernet (Cat 5, Cat 6, etc) cable (assuming your printer has an Ethernet port). If you use HP's Instant Ink program, note that it will not work with a USB connection. To use Instant Ink, you must connect your HP printer to your cable modem / router (your internet gateway), which allows your HP printer to send ink level values and page volume numbers to HP's servers, and also allows HP to send your printer firmware updates. It will also allow you (if you set it up) to send printouts to your printer from any internet connected device on the planet. That means that either a WiFi connection or an Ethernet cable connection is necessary (not USB). Also note that USB cables will generally have to be no longer than 5 meters long (and that is flirting with USB's functional limit). WiFi distance / reliability will vary, depending on the protocol and how many walls you must pass the signal though (and the materials in those walls) and competing WiFi interference from neighbors. With an Ethernet cable (any Cat X version), you will be in good shape for 100 meters. No signal issues. You will always have a solid connection. And your printer can be kept off of anyone else's radar who is sniffing for wireless signals. If you want to be able to print from your laptop in your back yard, then WiFi is your solution. But if you can run an Ethernet cable, then that will be your most secure, most reliable, and fastest connection to your printer.
For those with an HP laser printer that tells you you have to use HP brand cartridges, all you have to do is revert the printer firmware back to an earlier version that did not require HP brand cartridges and then you can use generic cartridges. Also, make sure you turn off the option on the printer to not do automatic updates or it will just happen again when it automatically updates the firmware.
I have an old HP LaserJet 1010 (from 2005). To get it to work on Win10, I have a folder full of .cab-files, one .cat and one hpc1015w.inf. I plug the printer in, right-click the .inf, choose install. That's it. (These files are for 64b Vista from HP official support page.)
