  • Today I am walking with David and Sarah Poole. They have decided to take me to have a look at St Mary's Chuch, a beautiful rural church in the quiet village of Singleton that nestles in the South Downs, a few miles north of Chichester and close to West Dene.

I wasn’t expecting the church to be so bright and with a feeling of spaciousness inside. I really liked that gallery at the back. Another great video!

I loved the gallery at the back - wish there were more of those.

Richard Vobes - I think a lot of churches had galleries but the Victorians often removed them in their restorations...

An unusual church but more spacious than expected. I noticed it still has flagstones at least on part of the floor. You mentioned wanting to learn a bit more about church architecture in one of your videos. Shortly afterwards, I bought a book off Facebook marketplace, The Architecture of Britain written by Doreen Yarwood and published by Batsford in the 1980s. It's the sort of thing you'd find kicking around in a second hand bookshop. It's very readable and if you spot one, you'll certainly know your finials from your crockets.

What a wonderful little church! So much history!!!! Loved the all the graffiti😍 And though I don't condone marring up any churches, those early "rebels" that did so left a wonderful plethora of history & charm! Loved all the old wood & stone work through out, but especially the gallery!💗

Btw...have you not walked around Singleton? Can't believe you would miss an opportunity to look at all those thatched cottges & flint buildings?!?! Or can I just not find the vid?😟

The gallery in a church was normally for the Gentry’s family. They didn’t want to worship with the peasants.
