Been watching/rewatching stuff over on CGQ lately, great stuff! At this point those videos have their own nostalgia…

Thanks! That's high praise but I guess at this point I've been making videos for almost 11 years.

Some of my favorite TH-cam videos! I love the combo of games and history. Also the nostalgic start and end caps. Great stuff!

I really do think the "weekend rental" concept is a great original idea, at least that I've seen in the retro game community, I still rewatch some of your videos on the main channel but I do find myself watching this channel much much more. Awesome work.

I have a weird story behind this game and I'll try to be brief but there were several moving parts and contexts to understand. The first time I saw this game was on our local Public Access station in 1993 and that show would teach you Tips 'n Tricks, which games were hot, custom Game Genie codes and new games that were on the way almost like a GamePro type of format. I was impressed with it's comic book presentation and graphics but I could not find the game anywhere in my area like the retail stores, the local video rentals or even Blockbuster which normally had everything generally. What also didn't help was I forgot what the game was called so after a while I gave up hope but kept it in the back of my mind. Then a few years went by into the Genesis' twilight years in 1996 or 1997 where I was digging through a bargain bin at either Service Merchandise or K-B Toys and like you mentioned that cover art immediately jumped out at me reminding me of the Jim Lee era of X-Men. But when I looked at the back of the box I realized this was the same game from the Public Access show! Brand new, shrink wrapped and on sale I think for $19.99. Luckily I had my allowance money and since I was shopping with my mom I asked if she would throw in $5 more to top it off so I could get it and she was nice enough to help me. But overall I think it's a decent game and one of Acme Interactive's better titles, definitely less frustrating than Batman Returns or Dinosaurs For Hire and it's nice to see when others acknowledge or show it off for other gamers to maybe try out or add to their Genesis collection. 😎

Glad you got it in the end. Similar thing happened to me but with a game called Shadow of the Beast

@@DMo2345 True story that I'll never forget for the rest of my life. One time while I there with my mom when I was 10 or 11 years old, they had a Game Genie for the Gameboy for $0.79 cents. I told my mom and she said, "Welp, if it's expensive like you say let's take it to the counter and see what they say." I brought it to the cashier who took the tag from the display, then the manager came and said, "I can't believe we did this ma'am, this is normally $79.99. But I'll tell you what, today's your lucky day kid. You owe me with tax $0.84 cents," and they actually honored it. They were beyond awesome for that! 😃

Bring back CGQ Flashback Chris! Need to hear those anecdotes of how you stopped playing games then came back to it with PS1!
But Weekend Rental is good too

Great video as always. I absolutely love your videos. Hope you make some new CGQ Flashback videos soon. Those got me through some hard times and I am truly grateful for that. Keep it up and can't wait for the next video.

I dont know how I didn't find your channel til this week. I was born in the late 80s, have an older brother who has told me similar stories to your own, and have fond memories of playing NES, SNES with my brother and friends from school. Your channel is nostalgic, and feels like an old friend. Looking forward to new content and I'm really enjoying your back catalog of videos as well!

I don't think I've played this one much if at all. The graphics look really good, but the music is pretty bad and definitely Western-developed. The gameplay looks kind of stiff in a similar way to Shape Shifter on the Turbo Duo if you've played that. Still looks like it's worth a try.

    • @Prizrak-hv6qk

I remember buying it because it was a budget title (only $40) and looked kind of interesting. It's definitely Malibu's least offensive Genesis side-scroller. The GEMS music is more minimalist here, manages to stay in tempo and doesn't make your ears bleed most of the time. The sound effects, including the voice samples were mostly surprisingly great. Not a fan of early 16-bit Western action games either but this this one was a guilty pleasure. Will be interesting to fire it up now, to see if it's just the rose colored glasses of childhood nostalgia.

I remember being in the mall at the bookstore that sold comics. And they had the Death of Superman comic bags all over the place. And kids and families were buying them saying that they were going to store them away and not open them and that it would pay for their college down the road. Anyways, I bought one sealed a few years ago for $10 shipped. Haha.

Great video, as always. I’m not a comic book guy myself either, so context at the start was really interesting.
I did actually play this a lot back in the day - one of my friends had it but I had no idea that it was based on a comic book.

They not only had four different art #1 Jim Lee X-Men books, but they also released multiple variants of the brown Wolverine / Cyclops cover. I'm pretty sure that run also inspired / was part of the push for the 90s X-Men toon. It's interesting how that era of comics pushed a specific artist into the forefront. Maybe it had something to do with the kids of the 60-70s getting older and getting deeper into comics similar how nostalgic nerds of the 80s Nintendo era started exploring the back catalog and history in the early 2000s.

Really interesting. I didn’t know anything about the Ex Mutants franchise and don’t remember the game from my youth.
I’d seen the game on my retropie and I thought that it might have been some early version of a fallout game (that kind of mutant instead of superhero mutants). The graphics have a kind of Amiga feel to me.
I’m going to try this on the weekend 👍

Good job playing. This game seems hard like X-men. X-men was my go to hard game to master. Pretty fun when you get the hang of it and of course that classic mojo reset. Take it easy.
