      Rory, you definitely are skilled at diving and cartography, I would like to know why you prefer to do it the old fashioned way, instead of using a 3D ultrasonic scanner (that would drastically increase the accuracy of each little feature and cut down the man hours considerably?)

      @Dan Gander you're goofy

    • @QuiteZer0
      @QuiteZer0 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Dan Gander what tape measure would you use underwater in a cave with flow(most caves) because any that i can think of wouldn’t be perfectly straight end to end due to flow unless you had multiple tie offs along the line to keep it steady thus making your measurements using that line inaccurate. and if you think about it he can see perfectly clear in the water he has mapped and most caves are springs which means good water clearity if not kicking up a ton of silt. So measuring half a meter at a time would be better since he can clearly see if the line he is using to measure is straight or not. And i dont have a degree in geography thats just my common sense.

    • @heathertownsend4266
      @heathertownsend4266 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Dan Gander I’m not an underwater cave cartographer most all of the maps I have made have been done so above water so I’m not sure what kind of limitations he has. I would assume that because of potentially bad visibility he wouldn’t want to have to rely on being able to see to determine distance. It could also be a comfortable measurement for him to quickly move along with. I have had to go so far as using my steps to measure distance and then calculate it based off of the measurement of my steps and how many I had to take (for small distances) with using digital methods (again because I have only made surface maps) like ArcMap I can determine almost any distance with a relatively low margin of error. I’m also not sure of his requirements for the maps, I have made maps that have said you can have a tolerance of plus or minus 1 foot, which means I could only be off by 1 foot because of the maps potential use for construction projects. There’s a lot of information to take down when you are trying to measure something like this let alone to map it in great detail like this and to determine a scale.

    • @bltn7469
      @bltn7469 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He uses the string because it is quick, easy , accurate and inexpensive. No need to "Fix something that isn't broken" or reinvent the wheel . He is sketching and taking notes as he moves through the cave . While also doing everything that goes along with CAVE DIVING.

    • @ameunier41
      @ameunier41 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bltn7469 To my understanding he follow the line while measuring and he takes notes of depth and direction at intersections.
      Should gives him a pretty good 3d map and he can always correct it with other measures. Like if he knows he unrolled 1000ft of ropes and counted 1050ft he can remove 5% to adjust.
      Just calculated and if he count with a 1ft ropes, with an error of 1/2" he is only off by 44ft.

    This was an incredibly interesting interview. Rory is definitely a master and is so humble to top it off. I could easily watch a couple more hours of him talking about what/how he does what he does and fielding more questions.
    The main question that I have now is, what could Rory achieve with a LIDAR or RADAR scanner? I am sure it would change how he goes about mapping caves but it seems like a time saver and would be much more accurate. Not that there is anything wrong with how he currently does it. Hopefully he and his channel get the recognition that he deserves. It could open up some opportunities for him when it comes to sponsorships (ie diving gear, a scanner system of some type) or maybe working with scientists on academically funded projects.
    Thanks Rory for taking the time to come on the show and answer questions. Big thanks to Gus and Woody for finding this guy. You guys have outdone yourselves once again. Have a good weekend everyone.

      Hi Cody, great question! I actually had the opportunity to assist on a research project that used LIDAR to scan a section of the cave in cenote Tajma Ha a few years ago and.. it worked! The researcher succesfully made a detailed 3D model of the cave. Now, the laser was something like $45,000 USD and required a tether to the surface for power, so not quite within my budget, but the technology is there and it does work!

      @Dan Gander Not a cave driver but I think the issue becomes when you are using longer measuring ropes, they either become too long for one person to use easily and that they become a hazard that you can get tangled in. Also Rory said in the interview that when he was using a meter long measuring rope, it was hard for him to use in tight spaces. There is nothing hard about maintaining neutral buoyancy whilst writing on wet notes etc. This really is a basic skill. I was taught this as one of my early skills.
      I know organisations who expect their trainees as part of their practical test to be able to lay line surveying as they go with correct distances and bearings, along with depth etc and to be able to produce an accurate survey. Whilst doing this the examiner will generally blindfold you as where we are vis is generally nil so you need to know how to do this and will also test task loading by shutting off a cylinder etc.
      I have marker tags on all my lines so I know distances and don't have to use string along the line to measure makes it far easier.

    This has gotta be one of the raddest technical videos you guys have made; I've always wanted to know about how it is (or was) done. It was particularly impressive that he was still using what could be considered "old school" techniques (aside from the technology used for generating the final maps); measuring by hand, drawing sketches that are overlaid with the line maps - it's a technique that would've been just as viable 100 years ago. At first I was sure that all modern cave mapping would've just been done using underwater 3D scanning/mapping technology whereby a diver swims through while holding a recording device. A lot would be done with the latest technology, obviously, but this is just WAY cooler.

    I wonder if Rory has experimented with photogrammetry. I have been using it to make a terrain map of the property here. Basically you take a bunch of photos of the same things from several angles and process the photos through computer software. The output is a 3D point cloud colored with the photos you took, so it is sort of like having a 3D photograph. I don't think it is accurate enough for the initial stick map and the output wouldn't be ideal to take on a dive, but I think it would help with drawing the details and you might be able to sell VR cave tours to non-cave divers or as preparation to diving a new cave. I use free Linux software to do it.

    What an incredibly humble guy, what a great interview and thanks to you two another thoroughly entertaining video!!
    Just wondering surely maps of the detail that Rory’s producing could help to reduce the number of accidents if people had a more thorough understanding of that caves layout?

    I would love it if you guys could ask him about 3D cameras/scanners, underwater drones, or other tech. Can or have they been used for mapping underwater caves and how can that improve and speed up his mapping process?

    Cave divers that trained and have a lot of experience in Mexico are known for having excellent trim and buoyancy control by having to master control diving the highly decorated caves with zero flow. Florida cave divers get away hiding poor trim and buoyancy in the high flow conditions.

    Hey guys, love your videos so much! I’ve never been cave diving but as a young child I had a habit of running into caves and exploring them. So I was wondering what would happen if there was an earthquake while you were down in a big cave area or even a tight tunnel. I think it would be really cool to get a video about what you would do in that situation, and react to other stories about people in this situation. Love you guys so much!

To offer such gifted, skilled & intricately detailed hardwork for free proves how passionate he is about his projects. Mad respect to Rory O'Keefe 👊 & @Dive Talk for always uploading such awesome video's & interviews. 🙌

    LOVE that you shared Rory, his work and his channel - I just went and subscribed! ❤ WOW! I 'm not alone in hoping Rory uploads more videos (and longer!) - I frequently wonder WHO explores and maps these caves - scary (to me) not knowing what's ahead. I know the "not knowing what's ahead" is precisely what energizes you all, but I think I'll just enjoy it vicariously from the comfort of my home!! ❤

    He is diving without a buddy? Cave diving is crazy enough this guy is on another level doing it alone and mapping the cave as he explores. Mad shit!

    • @TheMarcoflint
      @TheMarcoflint 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So actually most cave exploration is done solo. The reason being that a "buddy" is more likely to be risk => more siltout; difficult conditions; you can't really communicate anyway because it rains rocks. Not all explo is done that way, but a fair amount.
      And same for very advanced sidemount (where you go no mount) you can have planned team separation of like 3-5 min, you even dive without a long hose (they present an entanglement point), and sharing gas would be impossible anyway in many restrictions of this type of diving.

    I could guess regarding the ending discussion of where to find maps, that just like in dry caving, where maps are usually available @ local grottos for the protection of the caves, that's maybe the way it's on cave diving, but that's just a thought.. I think just admiring maps of either dry or underwater caves is great and any resource on the internet if it exists it would be great for perservation purposes to be honest..
