i am so enjoying the rediscovery and restoration of the whole Midnight Special Archive. And this video is another reason why. Rufus and Chaka performing Beatles in a blasting version! Tony Maiden is an unsung hero. Cheers!!!
Took that song to a different level. Never have heard this version before. When I think of Rufus first thing that drops into my mind is: 🎶 Tell me something good 🎶
Not me...they're loaded as a Funk-Rock...eventually Pop-R&B band. Killer ensemble. Chaka covered this Beatles tune on a solo album. Greg Philliganes blew the roof off with his synth bass part.
They worked it out all right! Funky, Rufus! 😄 That one guy's jeans outfit takes me back. I remember similar jeans patterns ( pants and jackets) at that time. 💜
Cool stuff! Miss the '70s era, yet? Knew Chaka covered this on a solo album (Whatcha Gonna Do For Me...1st track). On that album, Greg Philliganes' bass synth part was just killing!
The Edgar Winter Group post about a month ago is still number one, but this one comes in at number two. Amazing. Chaka's solo introduction was SO incredible!
I was 15 when this played at midnight special. Not something I would have enjoyed then or now for that matter. They just funkafied a really great song… original is always best!
Remember, Paul McCartney saying of a Sergeant peppers album that was redone by the Bee Gees and other stars, that by far earth, wind and fire, did the best job on got to get you into my life. They took that song and re-created it and just didn’t sing it like the Beatles did. Just like here with Rufus I’m sure he would’ve said the same thing.
This version is kinda frantic and spastic. Chaka would revisit the song a few years later on her solo album “What cha gonna do for me” in a much more successful fashion.
Fearsome funk jam, but completely lost the melody. Pretty much unrecognizable as 'We Can Work It Out'. They should have just written their own lyrics and got the mechanicals instead...

Dammm this is 🔥 wow Rufus and Chaka Khan

@jazzpunk oh yeah!! That version was slammin!
Incredible.
Chaka Khan's acapella opening was on fire! 🔥
Can't get past.... She was stunning!! Gorgeous! Big voice!!
This version is on FUNKY POINT!!!!!
Chaka… I’m in love
Kevin, you are Killin' it on the Keyboards!!!

The musicianship in these old Midnight Special videos is amazing.
I usually don't care for others covering Beatles songs but that was pure joy.
Believe it or not Chaka performed at my high school prom. It was wonderful to see her beautiful voice make it.
What a wonderful memory to have!

what a talent!!! that intro! wtf - gotta love her outfit

Sooo gooooood!!!
Estoy disfrutando de estos recitales, increíbles con todos estos talentos, que lamentablemente hoy no hay.
The talent is out there, we don't demand it. We accept pre-recorded junk by singers, who wished they could sing.
Excellent version
The best.
Thanks for this post, Rufus was quite unique and deserves some appreciation and so does Chaka Khan!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm wearing my Midnight Special t-shirt TODAY🎉🎉🎉🎉
Don't care about the song. Just diggin' the band.
That was amazing!
The Beatles and Bob Dylan get covered endlessly at this time.
How not to have a song flop: Revamp a Beatles song.
Chaka real jamming vocalist
God bless whoever made these posts possible. Fucking amazing.

Yeah the album version was much smoother but still funky, and definitely slammin!
I'd love it if someone remixed this into the version she did in 1981
Not enough talent....
Yup.
That's a version of the Stevie Wonder's version. Both versions are better than the original.

We can
Seems like everyone was a fan of The Beatles.
Hmm, couldn't work it out.

Not as good as Stevie Wonder or Beatles version. Too fast. Obliterated the melody.
Too bad the song wasn’t “Tell Me Something Good”, love the band w/Chaka Khan but not this rendition, oopsie.
Not really impressed. This is a total different song, just same lyrics
