Most movements in martial arts take place from a Counter. As such, you do not need an extreme level of "Speed". One of the toughest fighters that I ever sparred... appeared to move half of my speed... and yet, he was easily able to swat away my fast attacks.. and then land some devastating counters on me.
What is far more important, is precision technique, and proper range. For example.. way too many artists launch a kick from too far away. This allows the OP to easily see / read it.. and gives them plenty of time and space, to be able to back away. However, when the kick (or handstrike) is done from very close range... the OP often cant even see it visually... and even if they do... its so close, that its very difficult.. if not impossible.. for them to be able to evade the attack using Footwork / bending.
You can see a lot of the same problem in sport boxing. They often throw punches from far too great a distance away... and the OPs have plenty of time to be able to Step and or Dodge. However, if I throw a punch from a mere 1.5 ft away... and my punch is moving at 32 feet per second... there is no way that the OP is capable of moving their entire weighted body... faster than my near massless + non-anchored, Arm.
One would then ask: How do you reach an OP, if your strike range is so limited? One possibility, is to use a mid-range "Feint" tactic, to get the OP to react (block). The other, is simply, to wait for the OP to attack... as the OP will eventually want to get close enough to strike.
One day I was watching two fighters spar. One of them was trained in Northern Shaolin methods, I believe. He was an American that was a bit over 6ft tall... with very long legs. This Shaolin guy pretended he was "Escaping" away from the OP.. partially turning his back, as he stepped away. The other guy saw this as an opportunity to attack (weakness)... so he rushed to step towards him. Just as the guy was getting close, the Shaolin guy did a spinning outside crescent type kick. It was not throw fast... but the guy was so close.. and so invested in his forwards pursuit... that he was perfectly CLOCKED. It was quite glorious! =) Being a very experienced artist.. I had the suspicion that the OP was being set-up... and I knew he was likely going to eat a kick, as a result. For one... the guy was not really being stressed to the point where he needed to step away.. and that Chinese arts rarely step way / reverse. Instead, they tend to use diagonal stepping footwork, and try to maintain a very close distance to the OP. They also are famous for their use of Deception, to Bait the OP into the desired actions, for the counters.
Finally... Tall artists can be very fast as well. Its mostly down to the kind of training you do. If you watch Sammo Hung in "Enter the Fat Dragon"... you will see that in his later fights.. that he is one of the most authentic Bruce Lee impersonators. Incredibly fast, agile, flexible, and accurate... despite being a heavy massed man. You can also see some incredible fast kicks from some of the guys that have fought Jackie Chan, on film. I cant recall the name of the film... but the one dude raises his kick above his head... and then slowly turns and extends it.
That said... Ive seen a LOT of slow martial artists of all different shapes and sizes. They dont train for speed.. and so they never develop enough quick twitch muscle fibers. That, as well as not developing fast torso rotation. Again, its mostly due to lower training standards / less intensity..etc.

@@johndough8115 Oh, wow. That's one of the most passionately written replies, ever so thank you, John for the generous description. Yes, I agree with what you've said; everything has truth to them. That being, timing & distance management is essential in striking in order to find the optimal range.
Which is the reason why MMA fighters adopt a stance that allows them to shoot in & out of range to capitalise on striking, whilst being able to evade takedowns, as well as why muay thai fighters like myself stay light on our toes & maintain good footwork to stay in range to time & counter an opponent. For one, it takes *guts* to find that striking range sweet spot & here is where you can tell the difference between a trained fighter & one who is just a sloppy brawler.
Nonetheless, I still maintain that shorter guys do possess much faster speed when compared to taller guys. This is a fact. Their smaller frame allows them to slip & shoot faster which is why this Taido master excels in his art; if you watched carefully his acrobatics are more seamlessly executed because he has faster ground reach to cartwheel & what not.
Same principle applies to breakdance; the shorter/stouter b-boys & b-girls really are faster & more sleek in movement. Folks like me, average 6' tall but more mesomorphic in built are too heavily built to beat this Taido master, speed-wise. And forget about any brother the size of Bob Sapp; big guys are not good for acrobatics.
Just look at Tony Jaa vs Scott Adkins. Tony Jaa's moves are 90% of the time in real speed while Scott Adkins' moves are heavily edited (sped up camera frames) to give the illusion that he can move fast despite his huge muscles in 'Undisputed 2' - their size difference accounts for the difference in speed, really.

@@Z4U3398 Which is the reason why MMA fighters adopt a stance that allows them to shoot in & out of range to capitalise on striking, whilst being able to evade takedowns,
      - You are kind of interpreting what Ive said, through the lens of your limited experiences, which is understandable. There is some agreement.. but there is also a lot of misunderstanding.
      - In typical MMA training, there is little in the way of any "Stances". A lot of such fighters, go straight-legged when in combat.. which is why often end up on the ground. It happens to many TMA's, that never understood nor fully mastered the basics of what they were taught.
      - In high level barefist combat... you cant play the "in and out" game, because an angered dude at the bar... is not going to fight like that. They are going to charge in like a raging bull. They wont just do a two hit combo, then back away. They will keep pummeling, not stopping until you are a pile of Mush. They may be well prepared to eat strikes, in order to deliver them.
      - A lot of TMAs have a similar problem with this as well. They get too used to a sparring type of fighting... rather than a more realistic level of combat fighting. This is often due to the fact that many TMAs were long since "Sportized"... and have lost their true way.
      - When I sparred, I was not trying to Avoid being taken down. I was doing everything I could to damage the OP on their way in. I wanted them to come in close... as that allows me to intercept + deflect and trap their limbs.. to prevent them from harming me... while I am then free to launch an attack that they no longer can defend against.
Even in grappling range... they still are in great danger from me, because I had developed and fully mastered, high power, close range striking.
That said, a very advanced combat artists that had about 7 different Chinese arts under his belt.. managed to use advance trapping and some deceptive trickery, to be able to get a partial grasp on my lead wrist. I was good enough to know anti-grappling methods, to be able to start to pull out of it.. but he would then change into a different lock, based on my escape vector / method. After 3 different changes in less than 5 seconds of time.. he sneakily managed to set me up for a powerful leg sweep + throw, crashing me into the ground. Grappling has its uses... but the reality is that if he really wanted to harm me, he would have used strikes, instead of wasting time trying to apply a grapple / throw (the nicer options).
      - This same fighter, went from a more modern JKD, into such arts as traditional arts as Shaolin longfist. I never thought those low stance would be fast enough to be useful in high speed sparring / combat. Yet there I was, rushing in.. and he would take a single step, and or chance the stance.. while at the same time...deflecting my attack.. and then counter-struck, sending me sailing several feet back, knocking the stuffing out of me.
      - This man never bounced around like a TKD "bunny rabbit". He was stable, and rooted like a tree. When he chose to move, it was only out of a direct purpose... and it was carried out with precision, and stability. If he didnt have to move his horse (footwork)... he wouldnt. He would merely intercept your attack, and redirect / strike you. The best fighters that Ive ever fought in my entire career, were like this.
as well as why muay thai fighters like myself stay light on our toes & maintain good footwork to stay in range to time & counter an opponent.
      - If you are too light on your feet... that makes it easy for an OP to be able to land an attack on you, that puts you on the ground. You will not have good stability... and your center of gravity will be too high, and too varied in its vectors. It also greatly reduces power in your strikes. (as well as structural strength in things like interceptions / deflections)
      - One of the ways Kung Fu deals with this issue, is the Cat-Stance. All of the mass is loaded over the REAR leg. This makes the lead leg, completely weightless. A weightless lead leg.. is then used with "Leg Fencing" methods. If the OP tries to launch a kick at any part of my body, or even my own leg... I can instantly launch my lead leg out to deflect their own leg attack... with the speed of a typical boxing Jab. If you had even part of your mass on your lead leg... any attacker could be able to attack your leg, before you had the chance to move. In order to move... you have to de-weight from the front, to be able to step away. The time it takes to de-weight, is FAR slower than an attackers kick. Most especially low leg Oblique-Kicks, that target an OPs kneecap.
      - Some will say: IF the weight is fully on the rear... then it will be easier to push such a fighter over. The fact is.. that if you actually require more stability, you can still take a step, changing the entire dynamic. You can also still choose to switch into a balanced stance, as needed.
      - The main thing that causes poor stability, is when a fighter straightens their legs (no bend in the knees). When a fighter is bouncing up and down... they are in that straightened leg state, a LOT more than people realize. Furthermore... since their mass vector is moving vertically upwards at times... that means that any collision with an OP, will result in virtually no grounding stability at all.
      - A nice example of grounding and vectors, is to stand with a medium bent knee stance.. and allow someone to hit you. As the fist makes impact.. quickly DROP your body mass downwards. Your knees might bent about 1 to 3 inches more deeply.. but its not just about the legs. You want your entire body to be loose, relaxed, and acting as one liquid-like mass, shooting downwards. The impact will be greatly reduced, and the forces that they have imparted, will only serve to give your own body even more stability / rooting. You then can try the OPPOSITE... with an UPWARDS vector, as you are being hit... and you will quickly feel the difference in effects. You probably will end up flying off your feet... and ending up on the ground.
      - When you realize how to take advantage of rooting properly, and to the fullest extent that your capable of... you then can learn how to spot these weaknesses in people that you are sparring. You will know when they are weakest in their movements... and thus, when its best to be able to fully exploit their weaknesses in stability. As well as to know when they, and YOU, are the most Rooted.. in order to be able to dish even greater impact damages.

@@Z4U3398 Part 2: For one, it takes guts to find that striking range sweet spot & here is where you can tell the difference between a trained fighter & one who is just a sloppy brawler.
      - Guts? A high level fighter learns to be emotionless in combat. Robotic. If you are not used to getting hit (poor realism in your training, and poor/no iron-body conditioning), then sure.. you are going to be fearful.
      - A barefist brawler is often Fearless. Why? Because many of these dudes have been in COUNTLESS scraps. They have taken plenty of lumps.. and their bodies are often far more hardened, to be able to endure actual barefist combat punishment. Ive met dudes like this. They dont hesitate to start throwing attacks. They dont give two F's about the consequences. And believe me.. these guys are often far more effective than many sport fighters, that have spent many decades in their chosen arts.
      - Think about how many sport fighters have EVER once hit someone with a bare fist? Have taken a hit from an op, that didnt have a glove on? Whos weak wrist would possible buckle, as its not Taped firmly in place. Whos knuckles would likely break, on the first partial impact on the OPs head. And whom have never had to deal with defending without those two 7" diameter Pillow-Shields (mma gloves.. which take up nearly 1 cubic foot worth of 3d space, in total). When such fighters have no gloves.. their already poor defenses... drop another 50%.. as the OPs can easily slip past their arms, and through the most tightest of spaces... instead of having to throw much longer and wider strike paths... to get "Around" those gloves.
      - The key here, is about MASTERY. I, for example, have developed a short range kick to an OPs kneecap, that can instantly end any fight... with only a fraction of my available power levels. I proved this on a very disrespectful sport fighter. It took a month for him to recover from the injury... and I used less than 20% of the power that I was capable of delivering. Where as... if I had never fully mastered that level of output and accuracy.. then it would be FAR more likely that any basic brawler could easily charge past a sloppy and weak kick... and potentially bashing my skull in, right afterwards.
Nonetheless, I still maintain that shorter guys do possess much faster speed when compared to taller guys.
      - Im not disagreeing, that smaller dudes have the some capacity for greater speed, acceleration, etc. (especially since they tend to weigh less, and weight has a LOT more effect on those attributes than anything else)
      - But as for mentioning the fact that his acrobatics were executed better.. that was not merely a speed issue. Hes done these movements Thousands of times.. and she, has barely done them at all. Its not really a fair comparison.
      - The thing is.. there are many tall acrobats, that can perform equally as fast, and accurate. Its not just about distance. Its about full body strength, control, torque, technique...etc.
      - Think about doing a no handed cartwheel. The height is not really the factor in the speed... as the rotation point is in mid-air.
      Their smaller frame allows them to slip & shoot faster which is why this Taido master excels in his art;
      - You are giving way too much credit to the differences. If I trained two different fighters to do a spin kick.. and one of them was 1ft shorter... do you Really think that speed between them would be all that different?
      - Let me tell you... I am 6ft tall, and I could toe-kick you in the chin, and almost set my foot completely back on the ground, before you even realized what just happened. My kicks are Literally "Jab Fast". Faster that most fighters are capable of visibly detecting. This isnt to brag. It SHOULD be the standard level of capability, of any combat artists kicks. Lets imagine that a shorter and lighter fighter could be bit faster than my kicks. Does it even matter at all, at that level of capability?! Maybe they are a 16th of a second faster. It doesnt matter one bit.
      - What you have to realize, is that the taller person practicing the same art, is using the same mechanics. Their shin bones might be longer.. but they will be in the same depth of bent-knee stance... just a hair bit higher off the ground. A cartwheel into a mid-section kick, is really not going to be all that different, from a taller OP. The smaller guys kick might have to be aimed a bit upwards... while the taller guys leg might actually have the shorter straight-line path to that same targeted area.
      - Part of this is again, due to better training methods, and full mastery. And the other part.. is mostly a matter of mass. A 300 lb dude, cant accelerate their mass like a 130 lb Asian dude. And a stiff body builder type of artists... may have greater overall strength... but a much more fluid trained fighter, can often react 2x faster.
      - Breakdancing is very specific in its movements, and really cant be fully compared to fighting. IE: A windmill with a larger diameter circle, is certainly going to be slower. But such a movement, does not really match anything that the Taido master is showing.
      - What I can tell you, is that I used to be in class with a guy that was shorter than me.. but he weighted Much more than me.. as Im thin and boney.. and he is bulky, like a thick body builder. This dude loved Bruce Lee, and it was funny watching him try to emulate Lees movements.. but he was so slow, that it was painful to watch. I was much taller, but I could perform acrobatics, such as no handed cartwheels, Shaolin head-flip tumbles, and Wushu butterfly kicks.. with great speed and accuracy.
Just look at Tony Jaa vs Scott Adkins. their size difference accounts for the difference in speed, really.
      - Meh. Again, you are mostly speaking about mass, and specific types of movements. Ive seen Scott do one of his burning sidekicks.. and it was very close to Lees output speed. Ive not seen any movies of his, but again, I agree that a much Bulkier body, is going to suffer from acceleration penalties.
      - But if you ask to compare my Punch, to Tony Jaa's punch speed... You would need a high speed camera, and an Olympic level Precision Timer, to even know the difference.
      - A lot of people whom practice Mauy Thai, are taught to use more of a slower Power-Based type of movement set. Where as in other more advanced arts, you learn to be relaxed until the very moment of solid impact. While it would appear that the latter method would produce a weaker impact result... in fact, when fully mastered... one can develop FAR more power than you realize. In fact... I dare say that I developed more impact power in my lead leg... than many fighter have from their rear leg kicks. It sounds crazy.. and Id have thought the same way... had I not reached that level for myself, to know any different. The point being... is that if you train for greater strength.. you often do not develop enough quick-twitch muscle fibers... and thus, your overall movement speeds will suffer Dramatically, as a result.
      - With that said... Ive also had students that were weaker and smaller than me.. whom couldnt move their arms half as fast as I could move mine. Again, it wasnt the size, or length.. it was the fact that these dudes didnt train hard enough in the speed-drills, to gain such fast quick-twitch fibers, and other related speed attributes.

Sigh. This is the part where I wish you all the best in life, bro. Lol! Honestly, it *is* a tad bit hilarious when people try to describe their sheer awesomeness in a YT comments section... 🤭 ... but hey, who knows, right? Maybe you really are The Chosen One. Have a nice day, bro! 👋🤣

I think that is a very beautiful kick, but, we know like the most part of technics from all martial arts isn't effective in a real fight. Well, if you apply this kick against a weak opponent will damage him. But against a great fighter can be dangerous to you.

      @DigitalKingyo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Depends on what "real fight" means. Competitive sports like MMA, you should just do MMA.
Main goal of traditional martial arts today is not for killing but to control your body and mind through them in daily life.
Just seeing them as "practical or not" is so shallow minded and ignorant.
They don't show real "effective" skills to the public anyway.

@@MansMan42069 thanks. I know a little bit about martial arts. I'm nidan in Judo, yon kyu in Karate Shotokan and sometimes I practice gracie jiu jitsu and Taekwondo with some friends that to teach this sports. And I can to say: I know the differences betwen the sports. I love judo and I have great feelings about karate. And I repeat: martial arts are beautiful and effectives, but they are many technics that can't be used in a street fight or in a mma event.
