    dude thank you, this unlocked something for me, I was never really sure how to apply scales to a progression so I just defaulted to the key and played that scale in various positions, didn't occur to me you could essentially transpose it as you do the progression, such a classic Hendrix move too.

    Brilliant! I haven't played much Hendrix since I was in my twenties (about 25 years ago), but I can't believe I never caught onto this method back then. Very helpful to getting his vibe right, and great for playing other stuff too. Thanks Rob!

    When intermediate guitarists want to know where to move forward to; this is a good solid insight to what an intermediate needs to understand. If you don't get it (you don't need to be able to do it just get it and start practicing) then you need to work on all the bits that will enable you to get it. The chord/key relationships, the scales in positions etc. Good little vid

    Perfect explanation to get the "Hendrix" sound. I was taught how to do this by my brother--when I was learning how to play guitar--and the technique has followed me in all of my playing. And, once you have this down, you can make a pretty easy jump into modal Jazz playing, as well.

    I think it's so strange that this is the 2nd Hendrix lesson in a week where there's no talking about using your left hand thumb to fret low notes in the chords?
    But maybe it's just me?
    All the stuff is fine, but it seems so weird to leave that out.

    • @aidanscovers
      @aidanscovers 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I think that is more of a play preference than something that actually influences his sound.

    • @edothekey64
      @edothekey64 8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Not so much actually:
      For example if you play a major chord in the E form with your thumb on the lowest string and your first three fingers on the D G and B string, you'll have your pinky free to move and perform things like hammer on-pull of on the 4th or the 7th of that chord which is something that Jimi did a lot

    • @P0IZEN
      @P0IZEN 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      check out Dave Simpson then. he talks about the thumb.

      +Poisonapplefarm yes I agree 100% for anyone reading this!!! Dave Simpson has a great 4 part series about playing like Jimi on his channel.. He also has a John frusciante series which is almost another Jimi series as they both play very similarly. Enjoy

    Excellent video Rob. I always try to absorb anything anyone does in attempt to explain Jimi's style. It interest me the most and I have the most fun learning to play it. It was neat to see you play it too... Not something we get to see often. By the way...
    Cherry or Tobacco burst Ghost Fret, chrome bits, covered pups, black headstock.... I'm not going away!
    I don't have a Chapman guitar yet. I'm waiting for my cherry burst Ghost Fret before buying one.

    So if I’m hearing this right, (assuming standard tuning) use your 7 note scale for E maj: E/F#/G#/A/B/C#/D# and for the minor chords play blues minor pentatonic position 1 and for the major chords play blues major pentatonic position 1? Always position 1? So if strumming a 1-5-6-4 (bar chords on 6th string) embellish by playing maj blues scale on all but the C#? For C# use the minor scale? tip for newbies like me: frets open/2/4/5/7/9/11 to get scale for that string. works on any string. Great for bar chords on 5th and 6th string

    In a previous `Jimi` video you did, you showed a simple sorta thing Jimi did where ,say you played a bend on the B string, up to the same note on the E string, then next, just do that same bend thing only one fret lower on the B and E strings. So simple its stupid easy, but starts to get you into that Jimi feel right off the bat.

    Thanks for this. I'm a great admirer of Jimi (I am that old) and have been faffing around for the umpteenth time in learning to play. This time I'm faffing around with scales including Major, Minor and Blues plus the Pentatomic. I'm rubbish but at least I'm beginning to use a Structure to appreciate what all those frets are for on the guitarneck. ;-) This really helped me although some things you said went over my Head at this time. Hopefully as I inch forward, I'll come back to this and hopefully appreciate more fully then. Cheers again.

    rob, your left hand is positioned in a total non-jimi way.. I think a big part of getting the feel of Jimi's playing is gripping the whole neck with your hand - the thumb resting over the top of the fingerboard, or sometimes even holding down the 6th string, rather than having the thumb on the middle of the neck like you had it in the video.
