    Great video Jim. Detailed and easy to follow. Just purchased a 2008 Avalon with 77K miles. Your instructions will surely help me to maintain the things I can. Thanks.

    The only thing you left out when turning off the Maintenence light is that it has to be set to the total mileage not the trip settings. 👍

    That popping sound on your air filter was you breaking a hinge on the back of that air filter housing. Disconnect the vacuum hoses and open it like a hinged door to prevent that.

    Really informative video and well done jim, but could you clear up a few things for me? Cuz I wanna make sure I'm ordering the correct socket sizes lol. So im gonna need a 14mm ratchet, a half inch 6 point drive with a 15/16" size socket to unscrew the oil fitler housing, and a 10mm size socket to unscrew the covering for the air filter?

    I hope the oil is easier to change on the American vehicles, and the cabin filter isn't that difficult to get out either. Two of my vehicles are older and I don't have a cabin filter on them, but do have one in my 2007 Ford Escape, but I didn't know about it until recently.

    since my shop sees this toyotas every day with my exp some times due to heat and techs putting them on way to tight I invested in a 20 inch 3/4 breaker bar and it works grate. i had a few times that my 1/2 dr breaker bar was not doing it. I have every cap for every toyota now they also have two new tools out for these caps

    Wow what an amazing video. Thanks for the upload. Is there any hack to get around having to buy that Toyota Oil Filter Tool? Also, what do you think of Mobil 1 Extended Performance High Mileage Formula 5W-30 (meant to be changed once a year every 15k miles) for an '07 Avalon with 95k miles.

    • @Believe231
      @Believe231 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trying other methods of removing the filter housing can lead to damage, leading to extra expense and frustration from your car being down. I never recommend owners to deviate from the manufacturer's maximum service intervals for engine oil changes, no matter the vehicle. Be sure to follow your Toyota owner's maintenance schedule included along with the owner's manual book. To do otherwise is to gamble with your car engine's health and longevity. Saving a few bucks on oil changes can lead to thousands of dollars spent later should the engine ever develop an issue caused by poor maintenance to where it needs to be disassembled to repair it.

      In March 2019 we bought a 2009 RAV4 with only 18,646 miles on it. We have nearly 43,000 on it now. It was CarFax authenticated.

  • @mjkirk12
    @mjkirk12 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very helpful. I followed your method - I was able to hand tighten the oil housing and used wrench to finish.
    But with engine running, I see some oil seeping from the oil filter housing. Oil is not dripping, just small coating where the housing threads meet the engine.
    Was the O-ring not oiled enough? Could have gotten pinched? Or maybe I need a new housing? Will this eventually go away?
    I wiped it dry, drove to work and back and checked oil - still shows full, but oil housing has small coating of oil.

    • @mjkirk12
      @mjkirk12 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Update - after driving 100 more miles, the oil seepage has ended. Dipstick shows oil is at full level - no oil loss.
      I am thinking there must be some residual oil on the housing below the gasket that runs out after installation - that was confusing me a bit.

      jIM I am not trying to be mean or anything, but you put the inside cabin filter in upside down. The arrow does not mean top or bottom. it means air flow direction. The arrow needs to be pointing down as all the dirt collects on the top due to air flow coming from that direction.
      This is confusing and on some Toyota's it is opposite due to baffles and
      design, but I can assure that the arrow needs to be pointing down for the 2008-2010 Avalon . Each model car needs to be checked. Thanks.

    What about the plastic spicket that came with the filter pack?

    • @jimthecarguy
      @jimthecarguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't use them because either way the oil is going to leak. Thank you for watching . Don't forget to subscribe.

  • @njsongwriter

    I'll bet I can do that without making a mess.
    Aren't the spin-on filters canister filters?
    I call this a cartridge oil filter system.
    Why do the instructions that come with the OEM filter say not to use a pick or screwdriver to remove the old o-rings?
