Brian, as a brazilian, thank you for remembering the magnificent performance of Fernanda Montenegro in “Central Station”. This is the all-time best performance in brazilian cinema. Fernanda was also our greatest stage actress in decades, but is now retired over 90 years old. It was a very hard competition for a foreign actress at the Oscar by that time, and still is. In Berlin Film Festival, “Central Station” won the Golden Bear and she was awarded best actress.
Not sure if Fernanda should have won.She is indeed mesmerising but so was Cate Blanchette...but Paltrow????? Seriously I watched that film and thought she was even a bad casting!!!! Let alone be even nominated.
@@monicaangelini3324 As great as Cate Blanchett was, there have been a lot of great depictions of Queen Elizabeth I and Glenda Jackson (who played her twice) will always be No. 1 for me (Elizabeth R and Mary, Queen of Scots. Fernanda Montenegro gave an original, heartbreaking performance that no other actress could possibly match.

I was invited to this party at SoHo House in Berlin shortly after Alicia Wikander had won her Oscar. Quite a small, yet posh party, so I actually was introduced to her quite early on during the evening. Congratulated her for her win, but finished my sentence with "You should have had it for Ex-Machina instead". She took that complinsult really well (she actually seemed to be shocked that anyone had seen "Ex-Machina") And was a very lovely young lady towards everyone throughout the entire night. Much agreed! They are such NATURAL talents! Jude Law was so CHARISMATIC and beautiful in The Talented Mister Ripley. He was such a STANDOUT amongst Oscar winners (Paltrow, Damon, Hoffman) in this CLASSIC! ❤
@@Leeeooooooooooo I love Kate. She’s my favorite actress but I don’t think she deserved to win the Oscar for either film. But she should’ve received both nominations just like the golden globes. She was robbed in that aspect.
@@TheBerserkNetwork She definitely should ve won for Sense and Sensibility and Eternal Sunshine, and of course, Steve Jobs. then I’d be OK with her not winning for the reader or revolutionary road.
I thought Jamie Lee Curtis was good in Everything Everywhere All At Once, she was both funny and had a few emotional scenes in the third act. But I don’t think it was enough to win an Oscar and she wasn’t even like the standout performance of the movie. I thought Stephanie Hsu was easily the superior Supporting Actress performance of the film. Kerry Condon should’ve won Best Supporting Actress last year as she was my pick to win. It’s still disappointing that Banshees won nothing at the Oscars. No acting wins, screenplay and sadly lost steam after BAFTAs gave it to All Quiet on the Western Front.
Yea I really disagree when people act like it’s not a very good performance from JLC, but she clearly shouldn’t have won and probably not even gotten nominated. My personal pick would’ve been Hsu, however Kerry Condon also would’ve been a fantastic winner and a great way to acknowledge Banshees as well
I also believe that Jamie Lee Curtis was great in the film and was nomination worthy. However, I agree she really shouldn’t have won. That was definitely a career win rather than performance.
I think JLC deserved to win 🤷🏻♀️ She gave emotional depth to what otherwise could have been an extremely one-note character. It was out of her typical wheelhouse of self-aware characters. And how her relationship with Evelyn evolves from adversarial to a place of real human connection is instrumental in the growth we see in Michelle Yeoh’s character, which is fundamentally what a supporting performance does. Support the main performance. Stephanie Hsu equally deserved it. I thought Kerry condon was fine.
Dame Maggie Smith winning Best Supporting Actress with "Tea with Mussolini" at the Baftas is so iconic. I don't even know how she wasn't even nominated for the Oscars. This movie is such an underrated gem.
I agree with you regarding Fiennes and Blanchet. How did they not win Oscars? Regarding Bridges win, I think he was great, as usual, in the film, as was Firth, but fortunately Firth didn't have to wait too long to pick up his Oscar.
Tommy Lee Jones got really close to winning for JFK, which is a really great performance, better than the one in The Fugitive, and he was a veteran so next time he was nominated there were also a lot of compasionate votes
Also lost to Michael Caine. Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense is the only performance that I saw when it comes to the supporting actor nominees that year. If Osment won an Oscar for The Sixth Sense, it would be a great Oscar win. I think his performance is the best child performance on film.
I wonder whether it’s because they (perhaps) should’ve leaned into having a German portray Goeth rather than Fiennes putting on an accent? I remember the ‘rage’ at the time & a number of my colleagues were pretty furious. I wasn’t so sure myself, though. 🤔
The Oscars needs to put more respect on Ralph Fiennes! He deserved to win over Tommy Lee Jones. And I can’t believe he wasn’t even nominated for The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Heath Ledger got stomped all season long, and Michelle Williams only won Critic's Choice so yes, any win for the Brokeback actors was welcomed. Please do the same, but for the Best Picture category. Usually, Oscars and BAFTA diverge a lot when it comes to Best Movie of the Year (Roma v. Green Book, The Power of the Dog v. Coda, Everything Everything All at Once v. I’m not sure if you’ve completed a video on the Sandra Bullock win? I’d be interested in your opinion on that. Discovered your fabulous channel about a month ago. Duly liked & subbed. 👍👍👍🇦🇺❤️
I love Michelle Yeoh, but Blanchett gave the performance of the decade so far in TÁR. I understand that Yeoh win was important. But Blanchett in TÁR is another level.
I’ve watched Tar. I love Blanchett, but that film is terrible. In certain scenes, the acting is stiff. In other scenes, it’s so pantomime that it’s almost like a joke. I’m a musician, and I found the subject matter in Tar interesting. But the film is so drab
I honestly found Tár miserable to get through and the only reason I pushed through was for Cate Blanchett. Otherwise I would’ve turned it off after about 30 minutes. Michelle Yeoh was so good in Everything Everywhere All at Once and I’m glad she won.
The baftas ALWAYS get it so much better than the Oscars. Mulligan winning for An Education was incredible they didn’t even nominate Bullock because come on, we all know that movie was bad. I hope Rosamund pike gets her bafta this year, to show the Oscars she should’ve been nominated Kate was indeed much better than Vikander and she deserved her second Oscar Lawrence didn’t deserve that Oscar. Chastain and Riva were incredible Jake should’ve won the Oscar for BBM As much as I like Jamie LC, she didn’t deserve that Oscar, like honestly ? His was more deserving , but Condon was the perfect choice Fiennes not winning an Oscar is a crime. He was perfection We don’t need to talk about Paltrow’s win lol
A video re Fiennes vs TL Jones would not go amiss. It baffles me that Fiennes did not win that Oscar, it’s a performance that people still associate with him
Thanks, Brian, once again. I agree with your choices! I think Hollywood has gotten political with some of its Oscar choices, especially Paltrow and "Shakespeare in Love" -- IMO mediocre at best.
Ever since Jeremy Renner got into mainstream, I keep going down the memory lane to early 1997 when I got my hands on National Lampoon’s Senior Trip. I was 11 at the time, my best friend was 10 and we obsessed over that movie. We watched it every week at least once, so I knew the whole script line by line. Instead of falling asleep to a podcast or a TH-cam video like nowadays, I was falling asleep to audio track of that movie which I recorded to a dictaphone. Years later I even bought the movie on DVD, but it didn’t click with me in my twenties. It’s a silly comedy for teenagers, definitely not the best in National Lampoon’s series of films, but Jeremy Renner was a lead in it and I haven’t seen him for many years and it seemed that he is going to be a supporting actor at best. It’s great seeing him getting recognition and more lead roles in movies. There are much better actors of his age, but he is still my childhood hero 😂
I honestly don't get the hate Paltrow gets. Sure, she's not the greatest of actresses, but she's not the worst either. She's a nepobaby, sure, but so are Jane Fonda or Laura Dern, who are beloved and respected. Some shenanigans went down for her to win? Maybe. But the Academy proved time and time again that it doesn't need HW to make strange choices. Does anyone remember Judy Holiday? Cliff Robertson? Rami Malek? Worse of all, Rex Harrison? And that's from the top of my head. From what I noticed, the Academy goes mostly for the following: 1. the "showy" performance, either incarnating a real person , someone with a disability or mental health issue of some sort, or bereaved with grief. 2."honorary" award-someone who is beloved and long overdue; în this category usually the actor almost always has to fit also the 1. criteria. 3.going against type. Is she a glamorous, beautiful actress, known for comedy roles? If she makes a serious movie being ugly, it's almost guaranteed a win especially if she also respects the no.1 criteria. 4. Voting like sheep. I'm pretty convinced a lot of voters don't watch all the nominated movies and just vote for the most buzz or personal like/dislike of the nominated actor. That being said, I love both Bridges and Firth but A Single Man stayed with me since i saw it and you don't need to be lgBtq+ to understand human heart, you just need to have one.
She is a great actress if you have actually seen great films like Seven, Talented Mr.Ripley, Royal Tenenbaums, Hard Eight, Two Lovers and of course Shakespeare in Love which is only her 6th best performance. But over time she lost her acting ability and made herself look ridiculous.
Jeff Bridges should have won his first oscar for hell or high water, instead Collin firth in a single man was so good. He was so handsome in that film. So sexy.
A single man is an incredible movie, it tackles many hot topics, brings up heartbreaking experiences but it's done in a subtle way without so loved by Oscar public crying and shouting acting. Colin was sublime there, it is a noble performance.
Imagine if Amour won the Oscars for Best Actress (Emmanuelle Riva), Best Director (Michael Haneke) AND Best Foreign Language Film. That would have been spectacular, the possibilities were there.
Kerry Condon got that Cate Blanchett energy when I look at her. Honestly last year I it’s the supporting actress category ANYONE ELSE WOULD HAVE MADE SENSE. Like yes Angela is one of my favorite actresses ever but if Stephanie would have won I would have got it but Jamie winning was all politics. Kerry carried that movie not gonna lie I loved the dark humor of it all and her performance was a heartfelt. She played that character with so much emotion and heart and passion she was the right choice for that character. The Academy has time to make up for it she just needs a role that is worthy of her talents not that “Night Swim” bullshit.
It amazes me that Schlindlers List won Best Film but not one acting Oscar brilliant Liam Neeson made the film have heart through all the tragedies so Academy choose greatness not mediocrity
i’d argue bakhad abdi’s bafta win was right and he was arguably snubbed for his oscar win . for someone whose first ever acting role was captain phillips was even more impressive with what he was given
I will like any video that gives praise to the third greatest love of my life, Ralph Fiennes. Oh and for that picture of him holding his BAFTA award? THANK YOU! 😍
That final scene of Billy Elliott turns me into a blubbering baby every time. Hes the top dog and every bit as athletic and dedicated as a top boxer. Then Billy leaps into orbit and his father gasps for air at the Adonis little Billy has become and know his time in the mine was worth it because Billy took his chance. What a film and Jamie Bell is amazing in it.
Mine are Philippe Noiret and Salvatore Cascio ( respectively leading and supporting actor) from Cinema Paradiso: a very courageous and far-sighted choice for that era in which very few non-English speaking actors were rewarded.
Thank you. When the film was turned into a musical, three young actors took turns being Billy throughout the eight weekly productions. Performing live is especially difficult on the young. The Tony committee changed the rules so that the three actors could be considered collectively as Best Lead Actor. They won.
Yeah... I didn't like Banshees and loved EEAAO, yet when Kerry Condon lost to Jamie Lee Curtis at the Oscars, I was like: 😐 Uhm... Just no. Kerry deserved this one.
im so happy jamie lee curtis won. yea i would of enjoyed a stephanie hsu win more of course but jamie was fantastic in everything everywhere all at once. kerry condon would of been last on my list of those five nominees. i liked banshees of inisherin but out of the best picture nominees last year i would of ranked it like 9th or 8th place. but i will say she was one of my favorite parts of the film.
Thank you for mentioning the brilliant Fernanda Montenegro and her spectacular performance in Central Station! It still bogs me Gwinneth Pawtrow won over her and Cate!
Can you do a video for Musical/Comedy category fraud at the Golden Globes? Obviously those extra categories have allowed some truly deserving people to win awards but there's so many performances and movies I see in those categories that I would not label musical or comedy. Although melodrama are hard to place.
Fabulous video. I agree with you on almost all of these wins/losses. Brokeback Mountain was robbed at the Oscars considering it is one of the best movies of the 21st Century so far. Michelle, Heath and Jake should have all one. Philip Seymour Hoffman was great in Capote, but Heath Ledger’s performance was far superior. How sad that both men have left us. Banshees was my favorite film last year and it, along with the cast, deserved more love at the Oscars.
While I do agree that Kerry Condon delivered a better performance than Jamie Lee Curtis, I think Jamie Lee Curtis’s co-star Stephanie Hsu should have won the Oscar last year.
Winslet has been snubbed three times now: for Sense and Sensibility, Eternal Sunshine and Steve Jobs What bugs me is that great actresses like her only have 1 Oscar, and others like Glenn Close don’t even have one. But mediocre actresses like Hillary Swank have 2 and now Emma Stone will probably get her second Oscar too
The only ones I agree with Kate Winslet-'Best Supporting Actress for Steve Jobs', Emmanuelle Reva-'Best Actress for Amour', Jake Gyllenhaal-'Best Supporting Actor for Brokeback Mountain' and Bill Murray-'Best Actor for Lost in Translation'.
I totally agree with most of these, but the answer is Me. I love Crazy Heart, and I still think that performance from Jeff Bridges is tremendous. It’s so rare for an actor to win an Oscar for the actual best performance of their career, and with Bridges, Crazy Heart is at least a top 3 for me. Maggie Gyllenhaal was also terrific. While I adore A Single Man, and think it was great to see Colin Firth finally get some love, if I was an Oscar voter, I would have voted Jeff Bridges.

I’m not sure if you’ve completed a video on the Sandra Bullock win? I’d be interested in your opinion on that. Discovered your fabulous channel about a month ago. Duly liked & subbed. 👍👍👍🇦🇺❤️
Love the videos, man. Keep it up!!!
I love Michelle Yeoh, but Blanchett gave the performance of the decade so far in TÁR. I understand that Yeoh win was important. But Blanchett in TÁR is another level.
I think so too 🤔
I’ve watched Tar. I love Blanchett, but that film is terrible. In certain scenes, the acting is stiff. In other scenes, it’s so pantomime that it’s almost like a joke. I’m a musician, and I found the subject matter in Tar interesting. But the film is so drab
Why was the Yeoh win important if Blanchett gave the performance of the decade so far? Blanchett was robbed, pure and simple.
I honestly found Tár miserable to get through and the only reason I pushed through was for Cate Blanchett. Otherwise I would’ve turned it off after about 30 minutes. Michelle Yeoh was so good in Everything Everywhere All at Once and I’m glad she won.
Same! I love Blanchett. But Tar was not the one. That win would’ve aged like milk.
Great video!! If we’re going by wins>> the Globes and The Baftas >>>>>>>>>>>>> the Oscars
Fernanda and Cate gave far more compelling and memorable performances than Gwyneth
Tommy Lee Jones was good, but both Ralph Fiennes and even DiCaprio would’ve been all time great winners in the category that year
The fact that Sean Penn has won over both Bill Murray for Lost in Translation and Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler surprises me to this day!
Love your choice of A Single Man as No.1, Julianne Moore was overlooked for a nomination in supporting actress too.
The baftas ALWAYS get it so much better than the Oscars. Mulligan winning for An Education was incredible they didn’t even nominate Bullock because come on, we all know that movie was bad. I hope Rosamund pike gets her bafta this year, to show the Oscars she should’ve been nominated
Kate was indeed much better than Vikander and she deserved her second Oscar
Lawrence didn’t deserve that Oscar. Chastain and Riva were incredible
Jake should’ve won the Oscar for BBM
As much as I like Jamie LC, she didn’t deserve that Oscar, like honestly ? His was more deserving , but Condon was the perfect choice
Fiennes not winning an Oscar is a crime. He was perfection
We don’t need to talk about Paltrow’s win lol
Fantastic episode
Michelle Pfeiffer bafta win for dangerous lessons. Geena Davis won the Oscar.
Great call
Alicia Vikander was really good in The Danish Girl and in 1999 best supporting actor was pretty competitive and in any one of them could had won.
Johnny Depp (for Pirates of the Caribbean) deserved to win over Bill Murray & Sean Penn.
Fernanda Montenegro's reaction to Paltrow's win mirrored my own reaction at the time.
A video re Fiennes vs TL Jones would not go amiss. It baffles me that Fiennes did not win that Oscar, it’s a performance that people still associate with him
I was shocked when you defended the JLC Oscar win but glad you finally came around
Billy Elliot was great!!!!
2:34 Kate Winslet
Personally, I think Firth Should have won the Oscar in 2010 for A Single Man, and Jeff Bridges should have won in 2011 for True Grit.
Ugh, Sandra Bullock…Hollywood loves her. The Oscar’s often get it wrong-too much politics and big money. BAFTA’s are much more intelligent.
Jeff Bridges should have won his first oscar for hell or high water, instead
Collin firth in a single man was so good. He was so handsome in that film. So sexy.
True
A single man is an incredible movie, it tackles many hot topics, brings up heartbreaking experiences but it's done in a subtle way without so loved by Oscar public crying and shouting acting. Colin was sublime there, it is a noble performance.
Kerry Condon & Colin Farrell both should have won over Jamie Lee Curtis & Brendan Fraser tbh.
Imagine if Amour won the Oscars for Best Actress (Emmanuelle Riva), Best Director (Michael Haneke) AND Best Foreign Language Film.
That would have been spectacular, the possibilities were there.
When Austin Butler won the BAFTA last year i jumped through the roof with joy, I really thought he was gonna win the Oscar 😔
Me too
We all know why Shakespeare in Love won so many Oscars 😑
Yeah, because of THAT guy.
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL SOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!
Same Brian, same, I always pretend Firth was winning for Single Man ..😅😅
It amazes me that Schlindlers List won Best Film but not one acting Oscar brilliant Liam Neeson made the film have heart through all the tragedies so Academy choose greatness not mediocrity
i’d argue bakhad abdi’s bafta win was right and he was arguably snubbed for his oscar win . for someone whose first ever acting role was captain phillips was even more impressive with what he was given
I will like any video that gives praise to the third greatest love of my life, Ralph Fiennes.
I still love crazy heart!
These are are fantastic choices
The first one I thought was Jamie Bell
And Cate Blanchett again last year for Tar ! Masterpiece performance
I so agree with the Kate Winslet win, especially now the Vikander performance does not hold up
Can you do a video for Musical/Comedy category fraud at the Golden Globes? Obviously those extra categories have allowed some truly deserving people to win awards but there's so many performances and movies I see in those categories that I would not label musical or comedy. Although melodrama are hard to place.
Timothee Chalamet was 22 years old when he was nominated for Call Me By Your Name.
Havent started the video but im predicting David Fincher for Social Network will be on here
Oh it’s acting, but yeah nonetheless that would have been so good
While I do agree that Kerry Condon delivered a better performance than Jamie Lee Curtis, I think Jamie Lee Curtis’s co-star Stephanie Hsu should have won the Oscar last year.
A Single Man is a gorgeous film and Colin Firth was incredible in it. Wtf is Crazy Heart
You mean A Serious Man?
Winslet has been snubbed three times now: for Sense and Sensibility, Eternal Sunshine and Steve Jobs
What bugs me is that great actresses like her only have 1 Oscar, and others like Glenn Close don’t even have one. But mediocre actresses like Hillary Swank have 2 and now Emma Stone will probably get her second Oscar too
My favorite BAFTA win was Austin Butler winning while Brendan Fraser winning the Oscar. BAFTA got it right that time
😂
I am with you on that Jamie win! literally anyone else could have won and I would've been fine
I agree with Colin Firth (a single man is one of my favorite) and Jake Gyllenthal. Also Jamie Bell, Ralph Fiennes...and Mary Keeghan.
Pfeiffer in Dangerous Liaisons
So how would this work this year with Lily Gladstone not being nominated for bafta?!! I am just trying to compute things!
the tommy lee jones win was a makeup for not winning for jfk
I totally agree with most of these, but the answer is Me. I love Crazy Heart, and I still think that performance from Jeff Bridges is tremendous. It’s so rare for an actor to win an Oscar for the actual best performance of their career, and with Bridges, Crazy Heart is at least a top 3 for me. Maggie Gyllenhaal was also terrific. While I adore A Single Man, and think it was great to see Colin Firth finally get some love, if I was an Oscar voter, I would have voted Jeff Bridges.
