  • In 2009, Meryl Streep had a genuine shot at winning her first Academy Award since Sophie's Choice, but then she lost to Kate Winslet. In this video, I break down that year's extraordinary Best Actress race and discuss the reasons why Winslet defeated Streep for the Oscar. #academyawards #oscars #bestactress #katewinslet #merylstreep #brianrowevideo

Fun fact : Kate Winslet turned down The Reader because of conflicted schedule with Revolutionary Road , then they offered Nicole Kidman to replace, but Kidman was busy to shoot Australia but the producer was willing to wait for her..When Kidman was ready to do The Reader she was pregnant, so the role went back to Winslet who finished already Revolutionary Road..
What meant to be , meant to be, and Kidman was part of the presenter who gave Winslet her Oscar !! Amazing

@bilaalbadurdeen2733- Sandra’s performance in “The Blind Side” was definitely entertaining to watch, and was deserving, at most of an Oscar nomination. She was in 4th place for me personally. Carey, Gabourey, and Meryl were way better and either of them would’ve been more deserving winners. I just don’t like the “Julia-Robertsesque” type of overreacting that Sandra did. I much prefer she’d won for “Gravity” instead because that’s her best performance to date. It was more of an emotionally restrained and subtle performance that made her real more like an actual real life person that the audience can relate to, emotionally invest in, and root for all throughout the movie!

As a huge kate winslet fan and someone who has read both the books Kate's films were adapted from, my ideal Oscars wins would've replicated her golden globe wins. But she was not supporting in the Reader. Even if the category is infamous for fraud. Personally, knowing and reading the book (which I can recommend to the highest degree), I would've given the Best Actress to Winslet for Revolutionary Road. She was a perfect April Wheeler. But The Reader was the "stronger, buzzer" role. Still, I relish in the golden globes and her double wins.

LOVE THIS VIDEO! Thank you so much. I think that a major factor was... Winslet's performance in The Reader, regardless of what category it was placed in, won everything, completely swept. Wherever The Reader went, she was gonna win there. Secondly, I think that the Oscars didn't really want her to win for Supporting, they wanted her for best actress because that was where she belonged in terms of fame and recognition. It would have looked SOOO weird if Anne Hathaway won Best Actress and Winslet won Best Supporting Actress. (That's not a dig on Anne, I love Anne, but you know what I mean, especially at that point of their respective careers). Also her screen time in The Reader is categorically Lead. She's the lead role and the centrepiece to the whole film. My ultimate dream is that they had put Revolutionary Road in the vault and released it the next year. I think she would have given Sandra and Meryl a real run for their money, although she probs wouldn't have won cause winning back to back is really hard. But at least that way she would have had her moment in the sun for Revolutionary Road which she deserved. Thank you so much for the video.

Such an incredibly great category, strong at drama so much, Anne's take on Rachel getting married made me appreciate her as an actress, Angelina's portrayal of the mother seeks for her lost son broke my heart...... The reader moved me in a way I just cannot describe... Perfect time for her Kate to win finally after years and years being an Oscar loser.

Another incredible & spectacular video, Brian! This is one of my favourite Best Actress races EVER, not just for the unpredictability factor of the race but also because I thought Meryl, Angelina, and Anne Hathaway all delivered (near or) career best performances so I genuinely would have been happy to see any of them win as well. As a Kate stan (very excited for The Regime on HBO next year), I was ELATED to finally see her win as I do love her in The Reader but I do feel that it's unfortunate that her remarkable performance in Revolutionary Road went ignored as I still feel it's in her top 3 best performances alongside Little Children & Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind so that's the only reason I wish she remained lead in Revolutionary Road & supporting in The Reader as much as we can give a consensus on how that would be category fraud. Speaking of... an "Alicia Vikander Defeats Kate Winslet" video in Supporting Actress is a definite must as I remember that race being very exciting and Kate would have a second Oscar for Steve Jobs had Alicia remained in lead for The Danish Girl instead of going supporting (and she should have been there for Ex-Machina anyway)! Your 2010 video for Sandra will be exciting... it could go in either "Why Sandra Bullock won the Oscar" or "Sandra Bullock Defeats Meryl Streep & Carey Mulligan" really. Always look forward to your videos, they always make my mornings when I see them pop up on TH-cam!

If Kate had been nominated in Supporting for “The Reader” and in Lead for “Revolutionary Road”, there was a very good chance that she could have won in both categories, which has never happened in Oscar’s history. I’m sure that the Academy members thought that would be too generous to award two acting Oscars for the same actor in the same year and intentionally placed both Winslet’s performances in Lead in order to cancel each other out, since Academy rules only allows one performance to be nominated in the same category for one actor.

Small correction, the first half of Reader takes place in 1958, not during the war. Her crimes were during the war but those aren’t known until the second half with the trial in 1966. The plot somewhat mirrors Germany’s (in both sides) desire to focus on rebuilding and Cold War tensions during late 40s and 50s and many former Nazis were living normal lives during that time. The new generation in West Germany re-examined the past in 60s, alongside culture changing in general in West during 60s.
Although Winslet’s character is presented as somewhat innocent in the end of what she was convicted of, because she could not read. But that’s pretty typical for fiction.

I am curious to know why it wasn't until the 90s and 2000s that foreign and diverse filmmakers and actors, such as those from Australia, the UK, and New Zealand, started receiving recognition from the Academy. During this period, we also began to see Africans, Asians, and Hispanics make inroads into the industry and receive nominations and wins, such as Djimon Hounsou (2 nominations) and Ken Watanabe (1 nomination), as well as countless Black American actors like Denzel Washington (2 wins, 10 nominations), Viola Davis (1 win, 4 nominations), and Whoopi Goldberg (1 win, 2 nominations).
Growing up in Australia, I followed the journeys of some of these Australian Oscar winners and my favorite actors and nominated movies during this period were led by performers like Whoopi Goldberg, Djimon Hounsou, and Michele Yeoh. I find it fascinating how the Academy and the industry has evolved over time, and I would love to see a video on this Oscar retrospective.

What an excellent race!! I've always been mesmerized by Melissa Leo's talent. Anne Hathaway exceeded all expectations that year. Although my personal vote would've been for Meryl Streep, I'm happy to call Kate Winslet an Academy Award winner. On a personal note, a third Oscar for Streep in this movie (Doubt) would've been better than what ended up happening (her win for The Iron Lady).
Can't wait for your next video!!

I was shocked that Winslet was nominated in lead for The Reader when it was a supporting role. I wished there was more love for Revolutionary Road. It was weird that Michael Shanon received a nod for supporting actor. Both Leo and Kate were giving devastating performances. I wonder if voters didn’t want to muddy up their perception of their onscreen reunion that they decided to shut that performance out come nomination time. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen The Reader. When I saw it, I don’t think I was all that invested. She was the best part of it, but I just didn’t really felt it was a strong film to receive multiple nominations, including best director and picture. Oh well, I guess no point complaining about any of it when what matters finally happened: Kate Winslet is an Academy Award winning actress. I would have loved that she won supporting and Streep won for lead, but it just wasn’t in the cards. I’d have preferred Streep win for Doubt over The Iron Lady. Looking back at that film, and learning more about Thatcher over the years since, the film sympathized too much when she did such horrific things in her tenure as prime minister which the film glosses over. Streep is great, but would have loved that her 3rd Oscar win been for Doubt. I’m curious now if Kate will receive her second Oscar for the right performance or even another nomination. It’s been a while since her turn in Steve Jobs. She’s been making strides on the television front. I wanna see her return to glory in film.

She has the screentime and fame for Lead. The whole movie is about her even if it’s through someone’s else’s eyes through which we see her mostly. It’s a bit similar to Sophie’s Choice.
Something like Davis in Help had a lot less screentime or ability to effect the story and was nominated in Lead.

If the Academy has the prerogative to decide which category you go in - lead or supporting - why don't they use it more often? It seems they just accept whatever the studio submits, even if it defies logic. Since it's been 15 years since I've seen The Reader, I can't say if her performance was lead or supporting. Trying to remember, I thought she was in at least half the film, but I just looked it up and it was 41 mins.

Sure Angelina in Changeling was good but damn it felt like Sally Hawkins , Melissa Leo, and Kristin Scott Thomas were robbed by her. They were the tour de force performances that year for me.
I am the biggest fan of Winslet but her win felt contrived and paled in comparison to Marion Cotillard’s win the year before. Heck, I was even worried that her win will become some what like a Grammy curse. But I was very happy that she keeps turning great performances after that win, such as Mildred Pierce, Mare of Eastown, Jobs etc. I really hope she gets another shot at the Oscars but I hope she’ll win fair and square and not because people are just so tired of seeing her get nominated.

I really liked Anne Hathaway in Rachel Getting Married, so she would have been my pick for Best Actress, but Meryl Streep was great in Doubt as well. I feel as if Kate Winslet should have won before then, like for Titanic, and the Academy realized she should have won by that point. Of course had Winslet been nominated and won for Revolutionary Road, I don’t think people would see her win in 2009 as sort of an overdue award as I see people describe her win for The Reader. Thanks for the video Brian, keep up the great work!

It’s crazy how Winslet constantly delivers great, some of the very best in the industry in fact, performances yet she is almost never acknowledged by the Oscar ever since she won her first.
Winslet should have at least 10 nominations by now and two Oscars wins. One for Eternal Sunshine and other for Sense and Sensibility. She is extremely underrated nowadays.

That WAS Winslet year. She gave two fantastic performances playing 2 quite different characters. They were both deserving of the Oscar. Contrary to popular opinion, I do believe her performance in The Reader has a deeper emotional impact on the audience. I mean her acting in that scene when she listens to the tape for the first time in her cell and the one when she gets convicted are absolutely phenomenal. Reminds me of the scene in Monster when she is convicted and realizes she has been betrayed by her lover and Theron conveys such powerful emotion without even saying a word

Great and informative video - I agree totally that Winslet had an amazing year and was destined to take home the Oscar. The ending of the video regarding Bullock vs Streep, I disagree completely. One of THE most undeserving wins for me not just in the category of Best Actress but in Oscars in general was Bullock, who I love by the way, winning for Blindside. Laughable especially when you consider that a complete unknown turned in one of the most heartfelt and raw performances that year - Gabourey Sidibe for Precious. Followed indeed by Streep for Julie & Julia ( simply marvellous) and Carey Mulligan for An Education. But at least Bullock was honest when she got to her speech...'Did I just wear you all down?' Yes dear, you did.
