I certainly hope it won't. Yes, it's good, but it's a fully standard Hollywood movie. A much better meditation on religious process and critical thinking is found in Heretic (which of course would never be considered for an Oscar). One thing is for sure, and that's that the academy rarely ever awards Best Picture to any movie that anyone wants to see more than once. Conclave certainly fits with that. One and done. Wouldn't the real Best Picture be a movie that people want to see multiple times? Who wants to see Oppenheimer, CODA, Nomadland, Green Book, Spotlight, Birdman, 12 Years a Slave, Argo, The Artist, The King's Speech, The Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire, or A Beautiful Mind more than once? Nobody I know. And they're all recent winners. The Best Picture Oscars are generally vitamin movies, films you "should" see because they're supposed to be good for you. Yes, movies are back, but mainly due to the almost incomprehensible series of quality horror movies this year. I'm not a horror movie fan, but I've found myself seeing more of them this year than in any past year. Although I suppose Conclave would be considered a horror movie by Opus Dei.
