I even added turrets and spotlights on the sides that weren't used

you can extend one of the lower blocks and put turrets on them
+trevor nelson I did try that but it looked a little silly as it defied physics. Maybe I can retry using concrete walls instead for the foundation.
What difference do lights actually make for settlers? Is it a matter of increasing happiness?
+World of MONSTERS If you have well lit places, happiness seems to raise slightly than it all being dark. Dark areas settlers will rarely use.

Also, any reason to make it 3 high other than aesthetics? I mean does that make it too high for attackers to throw grenades or something else? It occurs to me that if you put a windmill on top it would likely be out of the range of attackers, for example.
If you have it too high then settlers won't use alarm or guard post effectively due to the range and field of view.
If you build a pair of those towers, do you find the Guards tend to stay in the one tower (covering their limit of three posts) or do they, for example, cover two posts in one tower and one post in the neighbouring tower?
+Daniel Coffey I placed 3 posts so they shift from one to the other rather than changing building, also I made sure to assign them to each post.

oh dear ... 3 beds for 3 guard posts ? 3 guard posts are managed by 1 NPC
+ozskeeter bear in mind quantity is not the purpose of this video, the building design is. If you want to assign all three settlers or even add more than that is your choice.
just build turrets on the side on the building and there you have it.
How do you select the small shack floor? I have only ever seen the option for the one big size. Is there an update or something that I'm missing?
+Jesus Campos just keep scrolling. It's all in the same menu for wood floors.
If it's not there and you are using mods then a mod must be messing it up.
Mods that alter the context menu do this.

Hay brother. There is a cleaner way of doing your conduits. You only need one for your tower, instead of the usual way.
Now I just use a modded conduit. But this was before mods and wanted realism over being too tidy.
How would you do it?

Sorry, I just noticed you needed to hook the siren up. Hence the conduits.
What I was meaning, was when you are just trying to liven the buildings up, with lights and shit.
I place conduits on the outside of my buildings, rather than in. As I've found the conduits have a sphere, or aura, radiating power from it.
Eg. I removed all the conduits from inside the castle, and placed them on top. And all my lights still work in the rooms.
+- Wamoana - I used a mod for conduits that Male a larger area of Effect so now I can use one for approximately 8 tiles
Aww osh brother! Dam I'm keen to use the mods ae. All the mods I've seen thus far, are meaner as.
But once I've completed the game, I'll join.
+- Wamoana - I moved to PC for fallout 4 just for the mods. Some amazing choices.
Aesthetic: sure, functionality: maybe with one od the mods that allow you to make "guard post" the size of caps or small mats you could assign settlers there (a bit easier than fiddling with the big guard posts), then some sleeping bags

Looks great. Any comments or experience on how well it actually works when the settlement is attacked? I mean can they shoot down from that high? Or is the angle sub-optimal so that anything close enough to shoot is below their horizon? Or do you not even get attacked with all the defense points?
Yes they can shoot down from there. When it was higher they couldn't so just ran down or never bothered to go up. Angles are important too. But my defence here is so high now I have 3 of these and turrets that attacks have stopped.

I found that by building 3 of these in a triangle covering all sides enemies may arrive all with a siren works really well to warn settlers and get a few shots off before enemies get within range.

Mind making a bar with shelves that have liquor on them?
+coldcorogon I tried that, loading out and back in means they all fall through and onto the floor.
You should see my settlement, I got exactly this. bar + pooling table and liquor on the shelves + more.
I used a mod (pc) to turn off the physics of the bottles, so they're static.
Gref Steel I auctually made a bar myself and stuck that robot behind the counter, it looks wonderful, downstairs for the bar and drinking/interaction, upstairs for pool/books.

After watching a few of your videos I thought I would mention that the beds to the far right on the list ( not the mattress or sleeping bag) will Actually open up more room and still gift that state of comfort for people. Specially for guard towers like this! Just a thought :) you don't need to take the suggestion haha. Just throwing it out. Loves the videos too.
I didn't realise that. I always thrown in the metal frame beds cause they look more appealing. lol I'll have to check them out and maybe I can fit more in if they're smaller and give the same function.
In the walls you used for the scouts lookouts you can place two of those small white beds in and still have room for walking inbetween so NPCs won't get suck. I use this trick when I get over populated :p
