This song came out in 1968. It was a huge country crossover hit for Jeannie C. Riley. Ten years later in 1978 due to the popularity of the song and its story. They made a television movie starring Barbara Eden of "I Dream of Jeannie." The movie went on to garner great television ratings and views. Great reaction as always.

When Jeannie C. Riley recorded "Harper Valley PTA" in 1968, it not only became her most beloved hit to date, but also threw songwriter Tom T. Hall into the spotlight: The song became a major, international hit -- the song hit No. 1 in Canada and Australia, and earned a Top 20 spot in the U.K. (No. 12) -- and has sold more than 6 million copies. "Harper Valley PTA" also made Riley the first woman to land at No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Hot 100 charts with the same song -- something that no other female artist would do until 1981 (Dolly Parton's "9 to 5").
"Harper Valley PTA" shows off Hall's mastery of translating keen observations into compelling lyrics and music -- and that's no accident. The now-famous songwriter had planned on making a career as a journalist or novelist -- but then "Harper Valley PTA" won the 1968 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Vocal Performance and the CMA Award for Single of the Year.
Below, Hall tells The Boot about the hit song and what inspired him to write it.
The story is a true story. I didn't make the story up; I chose the story to make a statement, but I changed the names to protect the innocent.
There were 10 kids in our family. We'd get up in the morning, and my mother and father would get bored with us running around, and we'd go terrorize the neighbors up and down this little road we lived on -- after we had done our chores, of course. I was just hanging around downtown when I was about nine years old and heard the story and got to know this lady. I was fascinated by her grit. To see this very insignificant, socially disenfranchised lady -- a single mother -- who was willing to march down to the local aristocracy read them the riot act, so to speak, was fascinating.
I wrote the song 30 years later; that song was my novel. I had been reading Sinclair Lewis. As a young man, I read Lewis' novels Babbitt and Elmer Gantry, which is about hypocrisy; Babbitt is, of course, about the social structure of the small town. So, being a big Sinclair Lewis fan, when I wrote "Harper Valley," I incorporated elements of Elmer Gantry into the song.

I wish they had video cameras at that time. My Mother ran a foster home and 2 of the girls borrowed my copy of that 45! They spent 3 days practicing a lip sync version of this song. One sat in a chair and the other was behind her. The one in front had on a huge sweater and the one in back put her hands and arms thru the arms of the sweater. The one in front sang it lip sync, and the one in back did hand gestures to fit the moment. They performed it to the family at the dining rm table, and we were ALL in stitches. If Americas Funniest Home Videos was around at that time and we could have recorded it we could have won not only the $10,000 but it would have gone clear to the $100,000 show and won! That’s how good it was. We were ALL in TEARS for a good 10 min after it was over. Every time I hear that song I flash back to that night. What a wonderful and FUNNY memory you brought me today. Thank you!!!!! Miss those days.

I'm old enough to have watched both the movie Payton Place and the soap opera based on it. And I love how most people today miss the point of Mrs Taylor using a lot of ice when her husband's away. Way back in the 40s,50s and 60s refrigerators did not come with an ice box like they do today so companies delivered ice to your house in big, square blocks that would normally last a few days. So it would be a little fishy if the ice delivery man was seen at her house a couple days in a row, implying she was banging the delivery guy. We actually had an older style fridge like that when I was little. We also had the old type washing machine that you had to run the wet clothes through the rollers to wring the excess water out. Those were the good old days. And a last point especially in small towns groups like the local Parent and Teachers Association held a lot of power to influence people's lives. It took a lot of courage to stand up to them as they also tended to be among the wealthier business people in town who could cause a person a lot of grief if they wanted to. Today luckily they have lost most of that kind of influence. I remember when the song came out a lot of snobbier people were offended by it and thought both Jeannie Riley and the fictional Mrs Johnson were offensive white trash. Now days all these facts are kind of lost on modern listeners but the message still comes through basically mind your own business and don't cast the first stone.

I’d like to thank you for bringing this up. As a 23 year old who has listened to this song probably hundreds of times, I guess I got the point but in the wrong way. I always heard that Mrs. Taylor used a lot of “I”s when her husband was away. In that way, I always thought that she was sleeping around and hitting on people. Because that seemed logical to me in a song that was all about gossip, it was also reasonable that the townspeople would have heard her neglect to include her husband, hence the “I”s. If I would have known the proper word was ice, I probably would have laughed a lot harder at this song a lot sooner. I appreciate you bringing this into my perview.

I was 13 when this song came out, and of course I loved the irony of it, and unfortunately, the truth of it. I grew up during an AMAZING time of U.S. AND World history! But, most of us at the time did not REALIZE the significance of it! To us, it was just ordinary life. We were VERY AWARE that having grown up during the Great Depression and World War II our parents and grandparents had witnessed history first hand!! But, us? Shoot, we were living in the reward of everything THEY had survived/conquered! We were living on Easy Street by comparison! But in reality, the 50's,60's,&70's were as challenging in the social changes that were coming at record speed. And, the music of those decades reflected all THOSE challenges. At 66 now, I am just realizing how special those years were, and it is by watching younger people like you reacting to the music of those decades. I REALLY enjoy your watching your reaction videos and seeing your responses to the music I grew up with and just took for granted! I look forward to seeing more of your reaction videos! Country music can be really good it's just white people Blues. Thanks for sharing.

I was only 9 years old when this song was released in 1968. I remember, what a fun song, calling everyone out for being their hypocrisy. I also love how you guys were at first shocked, then was laughing hysterically. This made me even smile more. I love how you thoroughly enjoy the music and instruments that I grew up with. You are both old souls. May God Bless You both with continued health to bring more happiness to everyone’s life.
    Happy Thanksgiving 😎

Ah yes, country music is truly the teller of human nature stories. I was never much of a country music fan, but I have always loved the lyrics of so many of the songs. It truly does cross over generations and cultures. I actually knew most of the lyrics to this one, and I don't know why!! I must have heard it a lot over the course of my life somewhere... I wasn't born when it was released.

Hey I used to BE Jeannie C. Riley !, when I was a kid. My mother had that album with the PTA song. I’d play that thing after dark, our living room was my honkey tonk and for atmosphere I kept the lights out. Ambient light came through from other rooms. I’d stand there and act out the song. I must have been “precocious”. 😂. The authority she had in her voice was very cool, and her swank impressed me so I just had to be her. 😂 And she was beautiful, so yeah.
I haven’t thought about that in ages, maybe I’ve never thought about it since way back when I was acting it out. Wow. Thanks for the memories 👍

This story has probably been true many times. There are many Harper Valleys; I grew up in one myself where the most self-righteous adults at the school got up to worse than this. There were divorces and at least one suicide because of all the shenanigans when I was a kid. I don't recall anyone in a miniskirt telling off the PTA but my friend's divorced mother was someone who shot from the hip and woe to anyone who messed with her or her daughters, who were both very nice. She was nice too but a single woman in a community like that has to make sure everyone knows she's armed, literally or figuratively, or she'll get run over.

I am in my 50's now but as a child stayed with my grandma during the summer .She had the album this song was on I would play over and over again. I probably played harper valley PTA thousands of times each summer from the time I was 7 until I started working at 16 during the summer and now longer took summer break at her house. I now realize she must of had the patience of a saint. because not one time did she ever told me to put something else on no matter how many time I played it never rolled her eyes or acted the least but annoyed that I playing it again even if it was the hundred plus time for that day. The only times she ever told me to turn off the record player is if it was time for bed or we was gong some place and I never argued with her about it. you would think after listen to this song so many times I would not like it as much but the truth is I still love it just as much today as I did all those years ago.

My Daddy was a chief of Police here in Texas. He was patrolling in the early morning hours and saw the lights on in a laundromat that was supposed to be closed and he saw a bus behind it so he went in and it was Jeannie C. Riley and her band washing cloths. He talked to her the rest of the morning. I still have the picture she signed for him. It was at the height of her fame while Harper Valley PTA was high on the charts.

I was in second grade when this song came out and we had the worst winter in Idaho on record and school was shut down for 2 weeks for country kids, because the bus couldn't make it out to the farm. We played this record everyday singing it using wooden spoons as microphones and wearing out gogo boots.
