I made a ton of mistakes along the way. I’ve bought and sold so much guns but also junk to bolt on to guns since 2004, wish I could just slap that kid upside the head and have a much better end result for a much lower total cost.
At the end of the day though, it didn’t turn out too bad. I’ve got what I need. I just don’t have some peripherals I wish I did because i was busy chasing the next thing.

@@MagicPrepper I would disagree with your order for PREPAREDNESS and SHTF. Most of the reasons you gave for a 9mm pistol first is for current times in like concealed carry etc. I won’t argue that a 9mm pistol has more stopping power than a 22lr rifle, however a 22lr rifle is not only FAR easier to shoot accurately, it’s extremely light, can easily be outfitted as a battle duty rifle, has easier longer range accurately and although 22lr shells are not exactly cheap these days they are still FAR less expensive than 9mm to build a somewhat decent stockpile..
We are talking PREPAREDNESS for SHTF right??. Reality is regardless the 22lr not having the stopping power, if you hit someone with a 22lr rifle they won’t be just shrugging it off and be able to quickly come after you and will likely die because of no hospitals or medical treatment. To me a pistol is mostly only useful in todays times and a tool to get you to a rifle at best. In a SHTF scenario I won’t be venturing far from a rifle period for any reason. I sure don’t follow the “grey man” way of thinking. Reality is, whenever you expose yourself to others outside of your group/community you are asking to be attacked regardless how you are dressed.. The likelihood of you getting caught in a gun fight playing grey man only armed with a pistol against those with a rifle is likely going to be extremely high. I for one don’t want to be in a gun fight having a pistol against a rifle..
So in a nutshell a pistol is not very high on my list for SHTF preparedness. In a SHTF scenario it will be at best my secondary weapon period..
With that said you have a good list, just the wrong order in my opinion. I would place the pistol either last or close to the last in priority for SHTF preparedness.. My list would start with a good 22lr rifle that’s easily outfitted into a duty rifle (optic with backup iron rights, sling, and flashlight). I could make the argument for the shotgun, AR/AK and large caliber rifle being of next importance, to me a pistol is at the end or close to it. I wouldn’t want a 22lr rifle being my only firearm in SHTF, but a pistol would be right up with a large caliber hunting rifle being the most less desirable firearm if I could only have 1 in SHTF..

    • @MagicPrepper
      @MagicPrepper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@lanejohnson7656 Just a couple of things to point out. First off, 22lr cannot be outfitted as a battle duty rifle. It's not meant for that. Relying on someone dying later due to lack of medical care does not help you in that moment. The shooter in Fargo, ND took 21 rounds of 9mm before being stopped. Keep that in mind.
The reason a handgun is number one is because you'll actually have it with you and that's it. Not be cause of the cartridge (pistol rounds are not very effective) but because of the form factor. And there will likely be a long, transitional period before openly carrying long guns becomes an acceptable practice without painting yourself as the number one threat.
That's just my opinion. I think you'll eventually come to similar conclusions after a certain amount of time. I didn't start out with this order for a reason.
      Hope that helps!

The purchase of an extra Barrel or a second or even a third upper receiver and Barrel for an AR-15 well allow you a lot of flexibility while having to buy entirely new firearms. I've read the same advice from all books on prepping that you should start with a pistol but it's a good idea to have a second pistol either in another caliber or maybe a full size pistol and nowadays you can get a pistol and rifle combination that use the same ammunition and for people on a budget the pistol ammunition in a rifle or carbine has a lot more potency and is easier to handle

I grew up in a household with a lot of guns. I can remember being 10-12 years old and just admiring my dads collection of 50+ firearms. Unfortunately, like many others, we fell on hard times and dad sold nearly all in the collection. He kept one in each “class” if you will. I’ve started my collection the same way. I’ve got my EDC pistol, a good 12 gauge shotgun, an AR15, a Rem. 700 for my bolt, and a lever action 22. I think it’s safe to say, I could tackle most tasks with what I have on hand. Now that I have the essentials, it’s time to start the fun stuff!

You laid out a good path to follow for someone just starting out. The Sig P365 series has been a breath of fresh air for me after spending close to 40 years primarily carrying Glocks. Nothing wrong with Glocks, however. One should do their own research and make an educated choice, including trying at a range that rents guns before buying. Then actually learn to handle it. I’d also add that a .22 handgun, either revolver or self loader up to a Ruger in size are also worth consideration. And they’re great to train on to get ready for a Centerfire. .38/.357are also good, however, ammo isn’t as readily available as 9mm. .40s close but 9 is still easier to acquire. And .22LR is still available except for those periods of hoarding due to hysteria. Your 590 wasn’t necessarily a bad buy. I’m not as familiar with Mossbergs as I am 870s, but there are enough available options to configure a 590 into something more usable. Don’t know if they make bird barrels for them, but something to shop for. .22 rifle, either the 10-22 or a Ruger American or other is an excellent choice. The 10-22 has been my go-to for teaching my kids. They’re also great for adults for a multitude of reasons. AR is a given. Bolt gun in a heavier caliber, or an AR, at least an upper in 6.5 Grendel or similar, or an AR10 in .308 or 6.5 CM will bring home venison or other big game. For both guns, a Remington 700 beats everything else hands down due to availability which extends to parts. Still, I prefer a Tikka T3 CTR with an ample supply of magazines. They’re just so shoot-a-ble of the box. Savage, Mossberg and Ruger also worthy of consideration in terms of price. Again, great and useful advice. Every good citizen ought to have those five guns in their inventory regardless of whether or not they prep. Out to be tax breaks for acquisition, care and feeding of the “five.”

The river single six is a great 22 handgun to compliment the 10-22 for the younger shooters. I’m a huge fan of the Ruger Gunsite scout in .308 for a longer range platform with a leatherwood long eye relief optic. I’m with you on the Sig making the Glock not so ubiquitous, although I love the 10mm cartridge and the G20 and G29 are hard to beat. I got into edc when 40 was the LEO cartridge so I have M&P 40 and shield 40- so I can reload the 10mm and 40 on same dyes. Don’t overlook the Winchester defender series shotguns as their action is so smooth.

Great video! As for your selection on .22LR guns, I would suggest a bolt action. They will cycle sub sonic .22LR and also cycle .22 short, which might be relevant in SHTF with ammo availability. Additionally, I feel that .22 conversions for AR-15's are a novelty toy. the standard 1:7 twist rate of a .223/5.56 barrel will cause most .22LR ammo to key-hole.

I might be wrong here, and please correct me if i am.
But why would fast twist make them key-hole.
Your faster twist is not a problem with subsonic loads in 224 caliber.
The fact that a 22lr barrel is tighter with .217 to properly seal the soft lead against the groves. Cloud be why it doesnt behave in a .219 223 barrel regardless of twist.
But maybe the "slop" gets worse with faster twist.

    • @garyfullmer4353
      @garyfullmer4353 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good plan. Good to see people more people getting into the gun community. Just make sure you're doing your homework when you're stepping into the new world of buying firearms. I feel like maybe I might give you a little bit of unsolicited advice so if you don't want to just ignore it.
First I would avoid pawn shops like the plague. Many mom and pop owned stores are technically pawn shops because they will take guns in on trade and I believe on loan. But you want to avoid the real pawn shops like they're the plague. First they don't know anything about their guns. Second they're taking guns from people who are desperate who might be selling a gun they know is broken and might not be safe to fire. And I just don't like pawn shops in general no offense to those of you who run honest pawn shops.
Make sure you research mom and pop gun stores before you go there. I don't want to give Mom and pop gun stores a bad name and I have one here where I live that is awesome that I completely love. People there are great. I got stuck putting together an AR-15 one time and he helped me finish it, although I had purchased the parts there and I purchased the carry handle there so he helped me and didn't even charge me. I mean I bought the parts there but still he took up time to help me.
But many still think that small local gun shops are the way to go whether they don't want to give money to big box stores or they know the people or they just simply think that local is a way to go when purchasing guns many swear by local stores.
A few things you might want to remember, many, if not all, small gun shops don't check their inventory very well, or at all, by inventory I mean the guns they take in on trade or consignment. I won't take up too much room here but I have been cheated several times. And I have been around guns since I'm a little kid. In one case I was buying an old bolt action shotgun which I collect I learned to hunt on them and I purchased it for what I did now realize was too good to be true of a price. But the rifle wasn't pristine shape, the bluing was beautiful, and not a scratch on the stock. Got it home didn't use it for years and then went to use it and the magazine didn't have a spring in it. Many of these gun stores do not check out their inventory. Make sure they do or they have some sort of ironclad warranty that you can return the gun and then make sure you get out and check it out.
I made the mistake of taking my Smith & Wesson 12 gauge semi-auto to a local gun shop. It wasn't cycling the shells they were stoving up. Honestly I don't break down my guns really far when I clean them. Most guns you can break down enough to get them clean enough by simply removing the right parts. Anyway I went to get my gun back and he said it just needed a good cleaning. Sounded a bit fishy to me but I believed him paid left. This was in the spring I didn't get it out until that fall to hunt with and sure as heck it's still didn't work. It was too late to get my money back. Even if I'd gone back in right after they"fixed it" they still wouldn't have given me my money back I'm sure. It is getting easier to find honest gunsmiths with the internet now. But still there aren't a ton of gunsmiths out there and sometimes it's a long long wait.
You deal with a bit of everything if you go to local gun shops. Sometimes people behind the counter are really profane I mean use the f word every other word. Doesn't bother me a whole lot but it might you. Most of these gun shops like this usually only carry what they think are high-end brands. They don't carry more inexpensive starter brands like high point for example. These are the people that would tell you that high points are junk and they will blow up in your hand. However if high points were always blowing up and people's hands of company wouldn't exist. Also high points have a lifetime warranty. I'm just saying in some local gun shops it's really hard to find less expensive guns that you might want to start with.
Hopefully you have friends and family that know the local area and know which are the good shops. Many of them are very good. And the ones that I don't like are completely horrible. But you want to have a good experience. And you may go into a local gun shop and ask to see a high point and they will literally tell you how stupid you are and that you should never buy one and that they're such junk they would never sell one. But high points a good going to get into at a decent price point. Guy used to listen to online a lot said that a high point in your nightstand is much better than the expensive pistol in the counter that you can't afford. I've been in local gun show elsewhere I've actually seen them make fun of people and then I've gone back in looking for a high point or something and they mocked me. Is a high point completely comparable to Glock or even a sig or h&k no. But it is a great gun to start with. Don't really care about how many rounds you're running through it because you can wear it out. And high point has a lifetime warranty supposedly so I think they'll fix it no matter what.
I got screwed so bad at home and popcorn shop one time I don't want to admit it. I was in my late twenties and should have known better. But I wanted to buy a gun for my mother just have something in her house. I was in a small local gun store and he had 22 upmatics on sale I had no experience with automatics until then except for 1911 and brownie high powers. He had a Jennings which really was a Saturday night special back in the day. He had it for $79 and most of the rest of the guns were quite a bit more and I thought well I can get something to my mom can can use but. Anyway I didn't realize till later that it was the most one of those horrible 22 pistols ever made. It was fun don't Don't get me wrong. My mom just decided she didn't want a gun in her house and told me to keep it. So I had some fun days with it but still today so much better you can do your research online.
In my opinion going to actual stores like Cabela's or sportsman's Warehouse and buying new is probably the way to go. And even they do sell some trade-ins. But you're getting a new gun with guarantees that it'll work etc. You don't have to worry about getting screwed over. I know I jumped in without you looking for my advice but I just want first time gun owners to have great experiences and honestly you're taking your chances at local gun shops. And buying new when you're starting out really probably is a good way to go because you'll start to learn the parts of the gun etc and then if you want to start buying some used guns then there it is you know how to work on them better.
Really what's been there saving grace of my firearms purchases lately is the fact that I have a local store whose owner I trust implicitly and where I always have a great time and where he knows that I won't buy anything most of the time. He'll still take his time to shoot the s*** and he knows that you don't have the money to buy a gun every time you go there. Good luck in your firearms journey.

    I’d suggest…
    1. Shadow Systems XR920 combat frame version because it’s compatible with Glock parts and mags, the most common type to find. Plus if your in a self defense shooting this company will give you a new gun to replace the one taken.
    2. Radian Model 1 223WYLDE 16” Brown Rifle, because it’s built flawlessly and has a lot of the parts your going to use to build your own rifle. But with a life time warranty. Plus unlike the SR15 and MarsL you can actually buy this.
    3. Daniel Defense DD5 V3, because it’s a relatively light and affordable high end AR10 that’s not going to break on you. The only part I’d upgrade would be to a Geissele trigger. Plus unlike the SR25 and MarsH you can actually buy this rifle.
    4. Beretta 1301 Tactical with pistol grip, because as far as reliability, weight, and price goes this is a great option for a shotgun. Plus it has tons of after market parts for easy fixing or upgrading.
    5. Finally only after buying the others I’d suggest a Sig Sauer MPX K with added clasping stock so you can better take advantage of cheap and accessible 9mm, 9mm otherwise would only be used as backup with your XR920 but this allows you to use it as a main option in close combat scenarios. Yes this would require a stupid tax stamp but 9mm is gonna be to common to avoid this option.
This list gives you ultra reliable options that give you access to 9mm, .223, 5.56, 7.62, .308, and 12ga aka all the most common rounds in America. And gives you a weapon for every situation.
Honestly you will be happy if you just cry the first time over the better more expensive options like this. Just get the XR920 and save cash in a savings and buy the others one by one. Don’t waste your money buying in the meantime cheaper weapons that put your end goal further out.

The order depends on where you live. But my top 5 would be: 9mm pistol (same as you described), scoped 22LR ACCURATE AND RELIABLE semi-auto or bolt action rifle, 12 gauge pump action, shortest legal barrel with traditional stock at least 5+1 with a red dot, AR-15 in 5.56, scoped .308 bolt action rifle.

Others may require a licensing process which may take 6 months or more for a handgun or even certain types of rifles. In that situation, get the .22 rifle and maybe the shotgun (while keeping money for the handgun) while you are waiting for the permit to come through.

    1. Primary handgun. Full size semi-auto in a full size caliber. 1911 .45acp
    2. Backup handgun. Something small and easy to conceal, when being discreete matters, or to carry alongside your primary. Something like a .38 snubnose. Colt Detective Special
    3. Spare handgun. Something that can replace the primary if need be. Colt Python .357 magnum (also feeds .38, sharing ammo with the backup)
    4. Pump action 12 ga. Versatile. Not ideal for hunting with 18" barrel, but will do in a pinch. Mossberg 500/590
    5. AKM in 7.62x39 - more oomph than .223, virtually idiot-proof. Alternatively an AK-74 or a 5.56 AK because of ammo availability.

If I were starting out today:
    1. M&P 2.0 5" 9 mm
    2. S&W FPC
    3. M&P 15-22
    4. AR platform rifle
    5. 12 gauge shotgun probably Mossberg Maverick 88
Besides the M&P being the most reliable pistol out there, Smith and Wesson value is simply the best out there currently. With the cross compatibly of the pistol and PCC, in both magazines and caliber. The 15-22 gives you the dedicated 22 lr with AR platform battery of arms. The AR platform rifle comes next due to ammo availability, otherwise I would choose the AR 10.
Finally 12 gauge gives you multiple usage cases from bird and small game hunting, up to deer and even large game. Also adds a layer of home defense that is devastating.
These are choices for shtf not personal preference but practical choices chozen for value over flash.

Thank you for the video. I learned a lot and completely understand your choices and the order of those choices. I am 70 years old and didn’t get into personal firearms until I was 62. I 100% concur with your 1st choice being the handgun, but for a readiness scenario I recommend that everyone’s first gun be a Glock 19 MOS. The G19 is the most ubiquitous hand gun in the world and if you can shot it you can shoot any striker fire gun you are likely to come across. It is in 9mm and you can run any standard Glock mag in it from 15 round to 30 rounds, and there are a ton of after market parts. My No.2 choice would be your recommendation of the 500 for all the things you pointed out. Having two different barrels greatly increases its versatility. A pump action 12GA shotgun is the most utilitarian firearm you can own. I personally went with the Mossberg 590A1, and like you did to your 500, I put on the MagPul furniture. I also equipped it with an Eotech RDS optic, Surefire weapons light, and an Ontario M9 bayonet. Based on what you have said in this video about you No.3 gun, my No.3 would be an AR15 platform gun, but instead of 5.56x45, I would go with .223 Wylde because of its ability to take both the 5.56x45 and the .223 Remington. My 4th recommendation is a good bolt gun. I live in a state that requires you to hunt with straight wall cartridges and in a caliber of .357 or larger. My choice would be a Ruger American Standard Gen II in .400 Legend. If game laws aren’t your concern then I would go with the Ruger American Std Gen II in 6.5 CM. Those are the guns that I would be restarting my collection. The Ruger 10/22 isn’t on my list. It may be a nice to have, but I don’t see it as a necessity gun like I do the others.

I would say the CMMG conversion is good but the down side is you get a much shorter actual barrel, getting only a few inches of .22lr barrel before changing to the .223 barrel, and the twist rate for your .223/5.56 rifle might not work for the .22LR.
Not to mention gumming up your barrel with raw lead rounds or rounds with that coating many .22lr have. It might affect your accuracy when using rifle rounds.

Don't watch this channel very often. I always feel like I am watching an infomercial. But this is one of his better videos. Less selling of sponsor brands and more on target with the video topic.

Magic, what is your opinion on selling your old guns to fund higher quality guns? Do you think people should hang onto their old guns for use as barter items?

I think for me, after a fire or would suggest, 1. Glock 19, 2. Canik MC9 mete (or p365, HellCat, g43x, or any micro 9mm for carry) 3. 12ga mossberg 590 or 500. 4. A Colt AR15. 5. .308 bolt action or Springfield M1a, or AR10. 6. Henry lever action 22 16” won’t jam/miss fire as much, and will shoot all types of ammo as prepping rifle. 7. SKS or AK47. 8. Full-size pistol G34 or G17. 9. 9mm carbine/rifle like Henry rifle, or Ruger pc9. 10. Pocket gun/also cheap gun to lock in car when not needed like a G43, .38/.357 J frame snub, g42.

This is sound advice and an excellent video. I like your go big or go home of the.357 magnum as a first firearm. 😂 Started with 9mm full size handgun to 9mm EDC handgun to .556 AR15. Thinking about a .22 Ruger rifle for inexpensive plinking and less expensive rifle practice. Next maybe some optics or a scope and then maybe a Mossberg 940 12ga. A long range bolt action is sometimes called a ’precision’, firearm. Great video.

When I first started, I very quickly found the utility of the AR modular system meaning that it wasn’t long until I bought a 7.62X 39 upper. I was loving the days of $.18 around ammo. I reload and this was cheaper than I could even reload good quality 223 for plinking. Next game, the 450 bushmaster upper. And then the 6.5 Grindel. So I basically had four caliber configurations that I could basically just swap out a nicely built AR lower. I agree everyone needs a good quality 22 LR. And I do have a CMG conversion. The caliber conversion head, the piece that basically looks like it’s made out of a 223 case ended up splitting after about 1000 rounds. However, the folks at CMG were fantastic to work with and within a week I had a replacement at no cost. Something I have become a fan of and recent years is pistol caliber carbines. Take a mediocre 40 caliber Smith & Wesson run it down a 16 inch barrel and you end up with 10 mm performance when it exits. The projectile will pick up over 200 ft./s. And accuracy is easily at four or 5 inches and 50 yards and paper plate at 100. And if you happen to have that car been in the same caliber as your side all the better.

Not sure how a 590 Cruiser was a waste of money? The Cruiser usually had the 20" barrel and 9 round capacity. Changing out and ditching the pistol grip is a sinch and just put on a stock. That would be a much better option than the 500 with the 5' barrel you have now.

Great video. Having used all of these firearms over the years, if I was new and starting out I would recommend a shotgun (12G/20G) over the AR. Versatile and far easier to hit a target for a newbie (and way easier to maintain). In fact, now that I think about it, I might even bump up the .308 and choose the AR last. The AR takes alot of practise to get good with and can be depending on the model, be unforgiving with maintaining for a newbie
