I understand he got a good point. I also used to have this point of view bc this is how I can work well. But overtime I realized that this view is a bit naive. This is with the assumption that every person in the team can self-manage. In practice this is difficult to achieve especially if you work in a team with diverse demographic. My boss tries to manage with leadership. good thing he has good patience, bc even I'm frustrated with his problem bc some people just can't be left with "rooms for creativity". I learnt a lot from this and realized my earlier naivety.
As a leader, he or she should always lead by example, put your foot forward and do work you expect others to do and do all things in the open and do them well. Never ask anyone to do a task, but invite them to join you (the team). In most cases the team who sees their leader working hard will automatically want to help. I believe when we as leaders show the way by our hard work, involvement with our team and then have an honest follow-up for good and bad work. We develop a good team by our presence in the business we are challenged to run and operate. The leaders biggest challenge today is "social media vs. work ethics".
Allowing someone to do what they love in their job and not "expect" then to work is also the key to success. Example. It is my job to sell product in retail, BUT I LOVE to help women feel good about themselves. So me being allowed to just be myself and HELP women at the boutique I work at, the sales increase. It is not about the job, but the journey that takes you to the destination.
There are a lot of industries where it is difficult to continuously develop people professional and because of this they lose interest. I've seen see good articles where companies have directed training and focus into other areas of people's life with good results for a more continuous development like in arts or creative industries. I value learning very highly, I wouldn't want to work in a job where I'm treated like a tool to continuing working in the same way until I wear out! Thanks for the good points about "manage things and lead people"
This only works if your creating something that is not physical. If your building cars as an example things like that need to be done effectively and on a schedule. Structure is needed in most cases but flexibility can be beneficial.
I just got a new puppy, trying very hard to make him stay on his mat. While watching this video, I couldn't help to notice how well trained this guy is to walk back and forth on the red rug! What was he talking about again? Lol!! But if anyone knows his trainer, send me the details! 😄
All employees can be, you have to have a clear vision and mission that resonates-those that don’t fit it usually self eliminate, you can eliminate the others that don’t eliminate themselves.
True, in factories everything is set and planned years ahead. It is pretty hard to implement lots of creativity, even tho we all have infinite potential of it.
8 hour work day? My job wants me to work 24/7 with the workload of 3 people, with no complaints, no raises-- because I'm getting to learn and work in new technologies!
D Uni - I agree, as some orgs are woefully under-staffed & have completely unrealistic expectations for what some of their people can do. When quality of life suffers, sometimes the only way to teach them a lesson (especially when you have raised the issue in a proper way) is to leave that org. I realize this easier said than done during times like these.
Randy Byrne I agree with you both. That’s what’s happening with me for last couple of years but circumstances are not allowing me to quit and this is a very bad time to quit 😀😀
15mins in and all I hear is an autobiography of how wonderful he is, I learned no actual tips whatsoever. All he said is accommodate your crew and accept their way of technology.
COVID times forced this vision to be a reality. My workplace for 7 years resisted this and now it does work like clock work. This talk is from a practical visionary
Few things , 1) theories goes for toss when you bring timelines and accountability 2) hiring is the key 3) coming to office does not kill creativity, that is illogical, pure Bermuda love 😂
This was everything i needed to hear. So many favorite nuggets of 6 the one that finalized my mental shift in how I lead was "coaches dont play ball ll they motivate amd empower their team"
Although not applicable for any type of profession, he’s so right. You can’t be treated like a factory worker when you’re expected to work any type of creative work - translators, journalists, designers, IT developers etc.
I love this concept. In pracical use, one can effectively lead a team without trying to "hurd" a group to do the work. Instead, a manager can set the expectation that we will all get to our end goal together. This, in effect, helps all involved to love their work and feel like they are all a part of something.
EXCEPTIONAL!!!! People 1st makes people put people 1st. An employee who is put above, will provide goods/services that put others above... everyone wins!!! Thank you for learning your skills early Hamza, and for sharing this motivating presentation!!!
Great communicator. I wholeheartedly agree that leading is better than managing. Help people to see the vision, want the vision, and the vision will become a reality.
Great and brilliant! I was applying technique of leading not managing in my company in Uzbekistan. It was start up, with budget 7K. Everyone was surprised and suspicious about working on result, wherein employees’ time management up to them and they have a choice to come office or not. Thank God, for 5 years we have been operating in marketing field, and team members are result oriented.
Watching this made me feel better about that my assistant sucked. I had never had an employee like that, and I just want everyone to feel autonomous, supported, safe, and trusted. I usually have a thing that needs to be done, a logical reason for it, then an emotional reason for it, and then how it’s rewarding. Logos, pathos, and ethos. Are you at your desk all day? I don’t care. I walk around watching videos about how Microsoft dynamics works with airpods in. I assume my team does the right thing, I trust them. I’ve only just in the last few years learned how to be on time to work. It’s a legitimate struggle. I’m great and I’m late, I think within reason is fine. Just be on time for meetings because everyone is waiting for you and wants to go back to normal life. And always, remember that burning yourself out is a problem that can last years, but taking a personal day to fully relax and unwind (get a massage) is only takes a day.
Love your training and your style of delivery. So informative, thought provoking and easy to understand...straight to the point. Will be saving this to watch a few times. Thank you
I enjoyed this presentation and there is a lot of value for many tupe of industries. In my opinion, it is not a one size fits all solution. Customer facing organizations like a retail bank brach for example, would not function with you showing up 15 minutes late, as clients and associates would be impacted. However, businesses like the one you had, sure it does work for certain people. Unfortunately not everyone has the worl ethics you claim to have. Thank you!
Leaders are followed even if they aren't in charge. All great leaders inspire loyalty and you literally feel like, "I'd follow him or her into battle or another job." I can name two or three in my life.
"You manage things, and you lead people". Thanks a lot In the near future, maybe machine or AI can replace human labor in some industries. Why not? So then, people will seek for some creative and motivative works to do. Are there still many people for us to manage? We must lead people, and manage things. Totally agree!
I think its good for project-based jobs. I manage fast food stores, I can´t tell my managers to show up whenever they want, all across the service industry this principles are not applicable.
Yes, but you can still motivate and empower your team in the fast food industry. There are so many companies that lack those 2 qualities, but instead they micromanage employees to death. So the employees find other work or come to work unhappy because micromanaging workstyle does not keep your employees.
He is not Sayin’ show up when u want. He says put the goals with mutual agreement and then let ur team do their job. Ur branch Manager is responsible to growth, profitability and happy customers. Leave other details to him. He is not a cow and wil not Show up at 2 pm. But if you spent ur hours at remote Security cams or gps tracker of his/Hera company car; you will LOSS
Love the debate happening in this thread. Would like to hear other perspectives from managers/leaders within more "traditional" and/or regimented work environments.
I disagree. I am a “manager” (although I hate that industrial revolution era job title) in clothing retail who reports to work with the team every fix time in the morning. But I lead the team to work “with” me and not “for” me. That’s what leaders do btw.
Bravado! I have changed career focus from the conventional business management paradox to a new business/ expansion project with a leadership position in the restaurant field. Hamza, thank you for sharing your experience, insights and advice. I will implement your points to create a cohesive, collaborative staff team within my development project.
I thought Hamza was on to something special but then I watched valuetainments theories and realised that this relaxed method would only work for certain people who have strong inner motivation . . . .not everybody is born with that and as a leader you need to work with all types of people! You need to adapt to different characters and not treat all creative millennial's the same.
+Hamza Khan ...i already did. I love the way u speak. I'm having the same kinda issues with my leaders or should I call em managers. They just manage n do not lead which I feel I can given the right platform.
There are 3 main leadership styles: transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire. By research the worst type is laissez-faire and the best is transformational leadership. The speaker talks about laissez-faire with certain aspects of transformational leadership so honestly idk how to feel about it
Nothing to make me feel accomplished like spending 10 weeks in a leadership course only to stumble across this eloquent summarization that took mere minutes 😅
There are people in the world who are either driven or not. Lazy or not. You can't convince someone to be something they don't have the desire to be. I didn't start working hard until I got to a point in my life where I wasn't getting where I wanted to go. I understood the principle of hard work, but never applied it because I hadn't gotten to the point of being so sick and tired of not moving forward that I was willing to do whatever it takes. Every one has their own reasons for working hard and moving towards their dreams. Not everyone has an amazing boss like him. However, I believe it comes from within and you can draw it out of yourself and achieve more than you ever thought you could, but it's gotta start with YOU. It's great to have those people who motivate you, but you could at any time fall back into a place of complacency until you decide to be a hard worker and accomplish your dreams.
There might be confusion about working "hard" and start time and where. I'm not sure that this talk is about lazy employees as it is about employees who realize that they are not willing to adhere to the 20th century model of line management. This talk does not apply to a store salesperson or emergency personnel, whose scheduled is fixed by location and time.
I think he made some great points about leadership but I believe that great leaders are also people who were effective followers. He mentioned that he was late almost everyday and his last two weeks were basically him goofing off. While I understand that being on time doesn’t equal production, I do believe that it is a matter of respect and professionalism.
Managers push from the back, leaders pull from the front. When you push a chain, it goes where it goes, when you pull a chain, it follows you. A chain of command is called that for a reason. It wants to be lead, not pushed.
@@peaceall43650 if there is solid transformational leadership, where the employees truly believe in the organization, then they are self motivated. That means that if they fail to do something, they don't believe it is relevant to the goal. That means it's not a motivation problem, it's a communication problem. In other words, no one adequately communicated the importance of the task, so they don't think it is important to the organization. Alternatively, the task really isn't important to the organization, and therefore procedures need to be adjusted.
agree when it is assuming the followers are motivated and the work culture is conducive. sometimes, the work culture needs adjustment and a change is required. in this context, i don't think you can just only apply transformational leadership to get the desired outcomes.. i feel that applying transformational leadership or transactional leadership or both will depend on the context.
I just could not understand from the beginning, but WOW!! In order to keep the strength are better to lead and coaching!. Thank you very much Hamza for this amazing presentation. Its one of those people from the Millennial.
A coach also sets standards and maintains discipline. Sports professionals turning up late for their team training could easily disrupt team cohesion over time. We can all be late at times, sometimes is it not just about excepting responsibility and taking it on the chin...
It is better to lead than to manager. Leaders are greater than managers.whenever, I am working in group, I love to lead them to motivate and encourage them.

To all people complaining about it doesn't work for all industries: He literally said its meant for creative work, entrepreneurial work and information work... edit: you can he states it at 6:30
Your insight about leading a team is inspiring. During COVID, I made sure to regularly connect with my team and reassuring their hardwork will meet success, as their boss I should always make sure that they're not only doing the business for the company but also for themselves. Hope to see more awesome content! :)
Hamza, well done. I begin my first real leadership role soon, and this was exactly what I needed to hear! I am going to empower my team, while they empower me!
If I were the boss, I really do not care if a high performed employee needs flexible work hours. But very odd, I never see a high performed employee in my career constantly misses his/her work hours. A highly performed one is the one not only finishes his/her work but can go beyond and help others. Many time, a job needs you standby and very quick response time. Physical presenting is necessary.
This is not a theory. If the work doesn't get done, intervene when key timelines or quality is not met. Most information professionals want to get their work done and to get a good job. For certain jobs, facetime is needed, but it can be modified.
Lots of great messages: trust, co-creation, culture of great work and a leaders' role is to create the environment where this can happen. May be less about tradition and more about control - some people struggle to feel in control of what they can't see and they need control in the first place in order to feel safe
Hey man, I just wanted to say that ur speach is very inspiering to me. Since i am trying to set up a team for an app this means a lot.
Couldn't agree more, Carl.
"Extended version of course" YES DUDE
Allowing someone to do what they love in their job and not "expect" then to work is also the key to success. Example. It is my job to sell product in retail, BUT I LOVE to help women feel good about themselves. So me being allowed to just be myself and HELP women at the boutique I work at, the sales increase. It is not about the job, but the journey that takes you to the destination.
What a brilliant TedTalk - The last 90 seconds are phenomenal - This is the best finish I have ever seen !!! Highly recommended.
Thanks for the good points about "manage things and lead people"
Interesting stuff can you link some articles
Having just stepped into a supervisor position myself, this lecture has boosted me. The approach fits my style. Time to coach.
Agreed! Congrats, and get after it. Been at it for 12 years now. Lots of ups n downs, but rewarding once you build the “right team”
Cheers
ARe you dealing with this well or do you worry about people's opinions or get anxious sometimes?
This only works if your creating something that is not physical. If your building cars as an example things like that need to be done effectively and on a schedule. Structure is needed in most cases but flexibility can be beneficial.
I'd work for Hamza.Real Talk.
#LeadersLead
I would be honoured to work with you, my man. Let's make this CA x UK collaboration happen.
Anytime. Drop me a message. Twitter, email. whatever suits.
How you work with muslims, you sikh?!
Mos Amaze Hamza is muslim name, I guess
I just got a new puppy, trying very hard to make him stay on his mat. While watching this video, I couldn't help to notice how well trained this guy is to walk back and forth on the red rug!
What was he talking about again? Lol!!
But if anyone knows his trainer, send me the details! 😄
He speaks as if all workers are self starters and self directed very progressive talk yet not practical for many industries.
Nonsense! He speaks about treating individuals as adults and equipping them to flourish and not controlling them.
All employees can be, you have to have a clear vision and mission that resonates-those that don’t fit it usually self eliminate, you can eliminate the others that don’t eliminate themselves.
This is good Ted makes ya feel good. If you have the wrong people you’re going to have issues. Period
True, in factories everything is set and planned years ahead. It is pretty hard to implement lots of creativity, even tho we all have infinite potential of it.
@@Fetchem1222 Not for long. If you have wrong people they don't get to stay.
Agreed! Me me me, I, I, I, me, me, I. That's all I heard
Yeah I'm not a fan. No real substance here beyond narcissism and a focus on very specific creative-type jobs. These are not the norm
Loved your talk! "We manage things and and we lead people." - 100 % spot on!!
💯
Great presentation. People often talk about thinking outside the box without actually doing it. Your story is quite inspiring. Thank you
I truly believe in the best way to manage high performance teams, it is not managing
I love this concept. In pracical use, one can effectively lead a team without trying to "hurd" a group to do the work. Instead, a manager can set the expectation that we will all get to our end goal together. This, in effect, helps all involved to love their work and feel like they are all a part of something.
Well said.
The mindset that he preaches here is why all the layoffs just happened snap back to reality people you can’t have your cake and eat it too
That’s great. The best advice I received from my previous Director was manage time, lead people. Great perspective!
The most gen z ted talk I’ve ever listened to.
EXCEPTIONAL!!!! People 1st makes people put people 1st. An employee who is put above, will provide goods/services that put others above... everyone wins!!! Thank you for learning your skills early Hamza, and for sharing this motivating presentation!!!
Makes a good point on the first part of his presentation. Millennials are not tied to their desks but do get the job done.
Yup!
I like that ending. "You manage things, and you lead people..."
Great communicator. I wholeheartedly agree that leading is better than managing. Help people to see the vision, want the vision, and the vision will become a reality.
0:16:27 Let's revisit the management paradox on more time
0:16:33 What is the role of management for the next generation?
nothing
Great and brilliant! I was applying technique of leading not managing in my company in Uzbekistan. It was start up, with budget 7K. Everyone was surprised and suspicious about working on result, wherein employees’ time management up to them and they have a choice to come office or not. Thank God, for 5 years we have been operating in marketing field, and team members are result oriented.
Glad to hear!
Bro is actually delivering quite a dense pack of practical information in a natural manner.
this is applicable in technology driven, innovative companies where employees love to dream big and do big things.
Thank you!
That's a good takeaway from this talk!
Thank you. One of the best TED talks I've watched listened to. We all need managers like this. Exactly like this. 👏
Absolutely fascinating, great lessons on leadership. Thank you for sharing your story.
Love the TEDX format - watching this after Martin Gutmann's video on why we choose to celebrate the wrong leaders is a helpful followup.
Leaders are followed even if they aren't in charge. All great leaders inspire loyalty and you literally feel like, "I'd follow him or her into battle or another job." I can name two or three in my life.
"You manage things, and you lead people". Thanks a lot
In the near future, maybe machine or AI can replace human labor in some industries.
The thing that hit me the most is "coaches don't play ball". Damn it!! You are right!!
Wow! What a nice way of delivering a public speech!
👏
Bravado! I have changed career focus from the conventional business management paradox to a new business/ expansion project with a leadership position in the restaurant field. Hamza, thank you for sharing your experience, insights and advice. I will implement your points to create a cohesive, collaborative staff team within my development project.
You're most welcome, Dale. All the best!
I need to watch this Talk again and again.
Please do! And share it with anyone else who might benefit from this message.
2021 needs to hear this. Man was working distantly (and effectively) 2 presidents ago. Well done. Well... done 👏 👏 👏
While I understand that being on time doesn’t equal production, I do believe that it is a matter of respect and professionalism.
to lead is to manage, and to manage also requires leading. there’s no us vs them.. there is just “is”.
Managers push from the back, leaders pull from the front. When you push a chain, it goes where it goes, when you pull a chain, it follows you. A chain of command is called that for a reason. It wants to be lead, not pushed.
Citizen Smith often times in leading, a little encouraging push helps
Good communication brings good productivity.
Hey is this something you do or try to do in your life ?
It is better to lead than to manager. Leaders are greater than managers.whenever, I am working in group, I love to lead them to motivate and encourage them.
Feels good to be 20years and in a position where I can exercise these practices! Thank you
You're welcome, Dwayne!
Best perspective that I have heard concerning the new landscape
Glad to hear, JP!
Some workers do not like to be lead, I let these people lead and then managed them.
One of the most relevant videos I've seen in a while...I quit my job for this reason. Thank you for re-inspiring me to be my best to help others be their best. This is the way of the future!
Glad to hear, Matt! The world is better when you're at your best. Wishing you nothing but success and happiness ahead.
To all people complaining about it doesn't work for all industries: He literally said its meant for creative work, entrepreneurial work and information work...
edit: you can he states it at 6:30
Thanks for pointing this out!
"You manage things, and you lead people."
Interesting conpect, one thing i have noticed, is that people do not like to get challenged.
Your insight about leading a team is inspiring. During COVID, I made sure to regularly connect with my team and reassuring their hardwork will meet success, as their boss I should always make sure that they're not only doing the business for the company but also for themselves. Hope to see more awesome content! :)
very motivational!
Hamza, well done. I begin my first real leadership role soon, and this was exactly what I needed to hear! I am going to empower my team, while they empower me!
As a manager, I would fire this guy
If I were the boss, I really do not care if a high performed employee needs flexible work hours. But very odd, I never see a high performed employee in my career constantly misses his/her work hours. A highly performed one is the one not only finishes his/her work but can go beyond and help others. Many time, a job needs you standby and very quick response time. Physical presenting is necessary.
Excellent Leadership commentary Hamza!
This was great! Every single section of this presentation was awesome! Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it, Martin!
This sounds beautiful in theory. What about the laziness? Why assume we are not(lazy) how does this the fact there is millions of distractions.
This is not a theory. If the work doesn't get done, intervene when key timelines or quality is not met. Most information professionals want to get their work done and to get a good job. For certain jobs, facetime is needed, but it can be modified.
@@ingwit4136 Many of my co-workers under perform and are lazy. Often they've been in a job for decades and are waiting to retire in 10 years or less.
A geek after my own heart. A non-hierarchical approach means everyone can grow and learn together.
Oh! U truly are an inspiration for an young leader like me. Would love to follow and listen to all your Ted talks ♥️
Glad to hear, Karuna! I have another TEDx talk on TH-cam about burnout. Check it out.
Lots of great messages: trust, co-creation, culture of great work and a leaders' role is to create the environment where this can happen. May be less about tradition and more about control - some people struggle to feel in control of what they can't see and they need control in the first place in order to feel safe
Thanks, Sonia!
Amazing, so rare someone thinking like that, with trust that comes after time!
Hey man, I just wanted to say that ur speach is very inspiering to me. Since i am trying to set up a team for an app this means a lot. When I started my first company i was focused on only managing the people and was terrible at leading and carring about the individuals that were collaborationg with me. This speach means a lot because i remember giving employees anxiety of the tasks i would give. I am a layed back person in general but very critical when it comes to getting things done and moving in a positive direction. thanks a lot.
One of the best talks here. Thank you for inspiring me to be who I feel in my heart.
