Here in the Washington, DC-area our police stations have offered to be meeting places for parking lot deals. Not sure if that would make me more nervous or less..
I have bought a few cheap bikes off Craigslist. I learned as soon as I statrwd looking at the first bike that you can never trust a seller to be honest about the problems. I used this to my advantage and purchased the first one for a couple hundred. Added about $1000 in parts. Afterwards I had a great bike for $1200. Important rules to follow are: never buy a bike without a tittle, have someone with you, assume that there are more issues than you are told, look over the bike real well pointing out issues you notice, do research about cost of some parts( I bought one bike with the knowledge that I could buy a good used engine for only about $400, wich I ended up doing.) Never pay more than you feel comfortable paying. Let them be upset about you low offer, but they might take it.
Bro, you went way further into that deal than I would have. As soon as he said, "Follow my truck into this sketchy area", I would be outta there. I hope you were packing.
Shadetree, got another idea for you. Been bouncing this off Dork In the Road out in Oregon for a while, and I think there's merit in it. 1: You find a spot within one day's ride from your place (restaurant, brewery, friend's house, whatever strikes you as appropriate.) 2: You invite other motovloggers to this spot. 3: While you're on the way home the others arrive at this spot which is also exactly one day's ride from their place. 4: They ride to other spots and do the same. How long and how far would this relay take us? Since you live in the far east of the continent (ye sage of ancient traditions) it makes sense to have an eye towards making a dash for the west coast. Obviously, this doesn't need to be limited to this. Rule 1: No skipped days. If someone doesn't make it to the last spot within 24 hours: start over. (Everyone saddles up again.) Rule 2: Participants need to keep an eye towards timely posting. If there isn't at least one video a day, the whole thing fizzles out. Rule 3: It's probably for the best to inform the people you want to carry the ride before stepping out the door. Rule 4: (And I include this only because it'd be fun to do this sort of thing often) Be safe enough to get home after your leg of the ride is done. No need to physically meet each other. No need to pass on a hacking cough and fever. No need to get stranded. Just video evidence of some kind the "baton" is passed. Challenges: Speed and distance. How far and how fast can this go? Is there a chance to run this up to Prudhoe Bay, Tierra del Fuego, Rio, Seattle, Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Bangor, Nome, Baja California, Mazatlan, Vera Cruz, Quito, and potentially jump an ocean while we're at it?
The issue with the old Goldwings tends to be the maintenance needed. As a former owner of a 75 GL1000, it isn't uncommon for them to have been stored in the shed for 20 hundred years and the carbs need a rebuild ($500) timing belts, water pump seals, and other small parts that require a ton of labor time. Once you get them sorted they are wonderful bikes, but you will shell out some coin to get them up to snuff too.
“Follow me!” “Right behind you!” Let them pull away. Stay behind them, keeping enough distance that it will take them a while to turn around and backtrack to find me after I make the nearest convenient turn-off in my SBC-ya later!
Reminds of my back in the 80s when my brother went with me to buy a Yamaha 650 turbo bike that a mother was selling for her son who laid it down. We drove 20 miles to the black neighborhood in Akron, Ohio. Well, her son showed up and wanted to know what was going on. He started yelling that no one is going to sell his bike and suddenly he was flashing his pistol around !!! so I assured him I was not going to buy his bike and we were leaving ! He went in the house and as we were getting in the car, his mother was coming toward us telling us not to worry and she would talking him into selling it. We got the hell out of there !!!
Is there a more entertaining story teller and just all around good dude out there than Josh? New to the channel and rooting for ya man, wish you success and good fortune in all your endeavors!
I bought a 1990 Yamaha Venture Royale for $3500 CDN 5 years ago and it's still going. I've ridden it from Ontario, Canada to St. Pete's, FLA, Ontario to Nashville x2 and all around Ontario. It is possible but you need to be creative when things break because you can't always get parts from the stores.
Except it was fake. nasa has already admits that man still has not been able to cross the van allen radiation belts. Do you also believe a sports car is heading to Mars?
I am excited for your addition of the fairing to the crusty glide. I am a fan of them and I think your bike is going to look fantastic when it is installed. Cheers mate!
Couldn't get onto the website but I checked out the FB page and wooow those water color type tats... Im in Tallahassee but might have to make a trip to tampa
NO ONE CAN BEAT MY $60 GOLDWING STORY! My buddy and I purchased a 1978 Goldwing with a VERY similar story off of some tweaker way out in the boonies. When we got there, we had to go way out of site through a dirt road that ended up in a compound like small community, every "yard" was full of broken down vehicles and trailers, and we couldnt find the guy, when we finally did, he didn't have the key either, said it was somewhere in his shed and he could find it, the wiring was a little sloppy, didnt have a battery and we were sure the only reason the guy thought it didnt run was because of the starter... so I talked him down to $60!!!! He originally asked $300, my buddy talked him to $100, then when we got there, I asked if he would take $60, he did and for an additional $60 (cost of the new starter) plus flushing the fluids and putting in new fluids and gas, the goldwing is now running absolutely no problem haha
I just recently bought a really clean '97 Honda shadow vt1100c spirit for 1,900 bucks it had 28,000 miles on it, I found it on Facebook marketplace, a dealer was selling it, I already put 1500 miles on it and it's been awesome. It goes to show you don't have to have a lot of money to get a bike that will last for years.
I did a $1200 2001 HD Sportster with super low miles back in April. When I had a friend look at it, it only needed a stator and carb cleaning. ended up flipping that bike for nearly double the price I got it for when I was strapped for cash during the all stop at work. I would of loved to of kept that thing because it was the first bike I got since I bowed out back in 2003. But a few months later I ended up inheriting my dads 2008 HD Super Glide. the thing that sucks is that I originally got that sportster to go riding with him. But I guess now every time I ride he's going to be with me. Thanks for the video's man.
Cheers from Brasil dude. Almost happened some shit like that to me. When I bought my car. A Chevrolet Opala 79 (brazilian "almost muscle car" based on a Opel Rekord). Dude who sold to me left with NO GAS at the gas station (had to push it to the pump) and the papers were with the old owner (who haf to recieve 1000 bucks from the guy who sold me the car). Keep doing your videos and reviews, you make good stuff for youtube. Hope you dig more into building bikes and recording it. Thanks!
I bought a 2003 Honda shadow vlx600cd for 1100...I love this machine.. had to put a little in it to get it on the road... less than 1500 in it and I love it
Josh I’d make a joke about “only in FL but I live in MO and given some of the hickle billie off grid weirdness to be found within 2 hours of my front door, this doesn’t seem all that strange to me. Glad you got out alive😅
I stopped in McBride one day and I was like, oh man I've never thought I'd ever find the boonies. Just a gas station experience, town is probably better than that.
Speaking of venture, my dad has one for sale. Problem is, it's up in WA literally as far across the country as you can get from you in Florida. And it is at the 2 grand mark.
I have a friend who found a craigslist Goldwing for under $1000. He had to do a little work, but its run since day one. He tore it apart and repainted it, got a ton of stickers. The dream can be real
it's like vinwiki stories for motorcycle junkies instead of exotic car owners. It would actually be really cool to see you sit a friend down with the camera and just tell bike stories like this every once in a while
its crazy that as soon as places opened up in NY my store manager calls me and tells me there letting me and some other employees go -.- i thought i was ok until now . sheesh talk about last minute . im glad florida is doing well for you guys ! keep riding !
Josh it is amazing how some people live. You have more guts than me, but I am 60 and have never seen the inside of a jail. But you have a adventurous spirit. That old XFR will get you anywhere as long as you have hands to turn a wrench. In addition we have not seen the dogs in forever or the misses. Is she still doing anything with her channel? Be safe friend! Also the best graigslist story.
My cousins from Florida used to come visit up here in Canada every summer and they’d always tell me these batshit crazy stories about back home and I always thought they were just fucking with me. I’m starting to believe they were all very true.
Here in Michigan we are constantly hearing “Florida man” stories like this. That being said, I had a very similar experience looking at a Camaro for sale on Craigslist with my friend a few years back. Just glad you didn’t end up on a milk carton.
@@shadetreesurgeon LMAO I lived in michigan and florida several times till I was 14. Parents in MI and Grand parents in FL and we would go back and forth. I never thought that it was the Florida of the north but that makes sense!
Josh my brother, great story, you had us laughing and shaking our heads at the same time. Ask any kid and they will tell you, Stranger Danger! Truly enjoy your content at least 95 percent of the time. You always seem to bring a smile to our faces. Ride free brother and tell Flip Na high.
For just a little more than $2k can normally pick up a EFI metric cruiser. I often see mid 2000 Vulcan 900s with windshield and bags for around $2500. My dad bought a mint 2009 with bags, windshield, mustang seat, and Bubs pipes with 3k miles for $2700.
My buddy is scouring Craigslist this very week looking for a bike and I CAN'T WAIT to show him this vid hahah. If you ever find yourself in ol' Massachusetts, Don at Tiki Tattoo in Millis lays down some great ink man. If you love potholes and bad accents, stray north to the Boston area. We'd love to see you when you do your Continental Brap Trek.
When you get the chance to swing through southcarolina, you need to swing through golden grove brewery. Guy that runs it is super friendly, growing some of his own ingredients, has a self made disc golf course and lots of acerage to hang out on! Awesome place, just off highway 85.
I bought a 1999 bumble bee 1100 Shadow for $1,200 and when I was done it would have gone cross country. Problem is I had to put tires on it, new battery, wheel bearings along with maybe 20 hours of work. Maybe more. A Goldwing is probably a good pick but that 1100 would have made it cross country. $2,000 without a bunch of work is going to be hard to do.
Another fine educational segment! For the record, inspired by the joys you present....I've bought my 1st street bike, It's a 94 xl1200Sportster. You know! Thanks Shadetree from Wesley Chapel way!!!!
I'm having fun with my '80 Wing. Picked it up for $250, found paint matched Vetter fairing, bags and trunk. Cheesy 80's luxury. I'd sell it to you cheap, but I doubt you'd drive to Wisconsin to get it.
Awesome story. I'd try Facebook Market Place, Josh. Found the most bikes and they seemed to be less pricey, at least in Houston. Found My '95 Vulcan 800 there for $900 and she is now running and looking good. Don't despair my fellow poorlings, the bikes are out there and you may even endure some of what Shadetree has endured. Thanks again, Josh!
I ride an '07 883c I got for 4k. I have already put a few thousand on it with no issues other than a starter relay. I am also hoping to get an 80's or 90's touring bike, really want a Yamaha venture but would consider just about any of them. We are way too much alike.
I am currently rebuilding an '83 goldwing. I received it as a box of parts, I've got it running and I just need a new tank and fix up the brakes. I was really hopeful you were going to get the bike lol
Well that was a classic story. Maybe this will make you feel better. I got a used vulcan 1600 from a dealer that only cost me $1,200 and they told me it had "seeping valve seals and a seeping water pump". I got it home and went through it and I got no leaks at all... I been driving it almost every day for hours with no problems. I my not take it across the country but I will be taking it across several states from time to time. Also Can't wait for my T-Shirt.
If a seller isn’t prepared to sell by the time you’re there, probably best to move on, IE, missing title (automatic no), parts scattered, parts/bike burried, ect. That said, i see cheap goldwings all the time. I feel like it’s too big of a bike for me at the moment but I definitely keep my eye on em. For now, my rebel250 does me well.
Similar experience 4 years ago when I was looking to buy my first HD (only had 78 or older Suzuki's prior). Ended up in Milwaukee in a shed down a random ally looking at a beautiful blue heritage springer that I swear started out as his bike when I reached out. When asked how many miles on the bike he said he didn't know, but on the motor was like 8k. Wait, when and why did you replace the motor? Well, not sure it's my friends bike. I thought this was yours? Now he starts getting defensive and his friend was then being deployed to Afghanistan and had to sell. Oh, and his "friend" lost the title too. Yeah, I think I'm out bud. Then he got really pissed. Super dodgy! Be careful out there folks! Keep up the great work Shadetree!
You should look for a low mileage Honda Magna. I paid 2,200 for mine with 10K on it from the original owner in pristine condition last year, and I haven’t had to put another penny into it so far!
I just sold my 08 kawasaki ninja 650r on craigslist, not even a week gone by and the guy called me asking if i can come help him get it out of impound, he wrecked it. Because he hadn't transfered the title yet, due to the office being closed, i had to go down there to get it out. He stated that a guy came out of nowhere and hit him, wrecking the front end. It still ran, but wasnt going anywhere unfortunately for him.
We used to hold an event kind of like this. The rules were $500 to spend on the bike, purchase and parts for repair. Try to go 1500 miles. It was pretty fun.
Had an 87 venture royale that fit this bill, 1k in it once i put new tires and battery .... would have gone across the country no prob..... even had cruise control...
i mean im not from the US but ive kept my bikes under €1000 so far, in fact the most expensive out of the five bikes ive bought was €600 :D Ive done week long touring with one and plan on doing more of that in the future. Just got to be willing to do some maintenance and basic jobs and you can find gold
Did not know about the one eyed Odin story. Thought he was just the Viking god waiting for the dead warriors at his banquet. Ironically you need both eyes wide open to gain knowledge. With only side, one loses perspective... Looking forward to the crusty road trip.
Well, that went about how I figured. If a Craigslist buyer or seller wants to change the location of a meeting, after I'm already at the prearranged meeting location, I walk, no exceptions. That could've gone much worse, and I want no part of that BS.
That was a funny story and video! I appreciate that you risked your life for a good video. I think it was worth it! Lol! Seriously, glad you made it back safe.
Wow, another CL adventure that did not end well! LOL! That is getting pretty normal especially nowadays! Good luck in your search! Hope you find something you can enjoy! If you are getting a Goldwing look for 89 and newer they have the 6 Cyl instead of the old 4 Cyl and most have a reverse which makes it nice to back up these monsters. Be leary about buying it if the reverse does not work, that means they probably have not taken care of it very well. Make sure the battery is charging the stators go out on them, One of the more common problems is they sit too long, you need to make sure it is running good, if you have to take off the carbs to rebuild them, it is a pain in the rear. Those are the most common problems I can remember with those old bikes. If I can't go to their house to see what I am buying I pass because they are trying to hide something. Usually ends up a waste of time as this wonderful adventure did! LOL! Take care and God bless you all! We enjoy all your videos!
Every Craigslist exchange in Kentucky is like that! I sold a horse trailer years ago and was offered a broken SEGA game, sex and drugs for it...the lady got offended when I refused the offer...but thats family for you.
Definitely a crazy story tho good thing there's plenty of used 1200 goldwing for sale maybe if you get lucky you can pick up the 85 limited or the or the 86 special edition with the optional fuel injection if not there's still plenty of those bikes around definitely a huge step up from the previous generation of goldwing 1100
Your April 12 video with cheap used bikes from Harley might have been a better bet than the discounted junky special on good old craigslist. That 99 Electra glide at the Harley dealership seemed the best bet, even though the price was at 3k.
Side note, u come up lemme know theres a bar up here you should take a trip on up to called the bunker. You see this josh you look up the bunker in waterford. Great next trip?
"...if a little stressful". Dude, understatement of the year. I woulda dipped as soon as he said get the angle grinder. Clearly you had serious interest in the bike, lol
ive been searching for an old harley to buy and build up cause of u! I used to dislike harleys cause I thought they were slow bikes that are loud for old guys, but youve shown me otherwise. Hopefully before end of June I'll be wrenching on one and riding across the country by July!
I`m descended from Thor, Son of Odin, the God of storms, thunder and lightning, strength & fertility. I tried to find your disco duck on Ft Myers Craigslist & did find a few in that price range looking in both the MC & Parts sections, but I wan`t sure I found the one you had looked at. Oh well, not that I was going to buy it anyways. Just for fun wanted to see it.
Hey , got my 1st Harley!! I had bikes my whole life but never a Harley!! I finally got a 05 Sportster custom!! We live in S. Philadelphia. And I guess I have to tell you 1st that I love your channel and I have stage 4 cancer . Dont sleep to good so I watch you !! Love it .!!! Well I had it about a week and went out one morning ready to go for a ride and had nothing!!! No power and a melted tail light. What do you think it could be ? It's in the shop now about 3 weeks . Any help would be great . Terry. Thank you !!
Two craigslist rules I never break. They don't come to my house and if they won't meet me in a public place then we don't meet.
Here in the Washington, DC-area our police stations have offered to be meeting places for parking lot deals. Not sure if that would make me more nervous or less..
Bobcat Arts that area is rough , a lot foreigners there too ! 😳
I always assume that if i dont get to meet at the house he has something to hide. Like his identity selling something stolen.
So i back off.

I’d flip hadn’t have been there I wouldn’t have even told it cause it sounds so unbelievable 😂
That video would have been absolutely insane!
Maybe something involving a swamp and some gators
Was gonna comment something along these lines. Florida is really filled with absolute morons.

Michigan is basically the Florida if the north though 😂
@@shadetreesurgeon LMAO I lived in michigan and florida several times till I was 14. Parents in MI and Grand parents in FL and we would go back and forth. I never thought that it was the Florida of the north but that makes sense!
@@shadetreesurgeon After living in Michigan for the last 15 years, you're not wrong!
My craigslist find was a 2000 suzuki 1400 intruder billed as a no runner. Got it home charged battery and runnin bike...
1250
This is why I love this dude and this channel!! How can you be the perfect life lesson of what to do and what not to do in the same damn situation?!
Love the Odin tattoo, and the thought behind it. As a seeker of knowledge throughout my life and career, I really support this idea.
So, did you recommend a name change on the ad to the Honda DopeWing?
This story is a great example why the remake of “Deliverance “ will be filmed in Florida!
Hey Josh did you hear any banjo music?
🙃👍
I purchased a 1981 suzuki gs550L for 600 and it runs but needs a bit of work. I have faith you can find bikes for cheap and ride them cross country.
You need to head to south Jersey/ Philly area. There are constantly a few old wings and voyagers on Craigslist, been all I can do not to buy one.
Know that's a party!! And that your fxr is looking clean.that huffy nut guard is a nice touch
Best Craigslist story ever lol
You should look for a low mileage Honda Magna. I paid 2,200 for mine with 10K on it from the original owner in pristine condition last year, and I haven’t had to put another penny into it so far!
We have a saying up here in the Yukon that seems to apply to Florida as well. " You don't lose your wife. You just lose your turn."
Bill & Ted EXCELLENT !
Well, if you feel like traveling down this way to Naples again, there is an 03 Kawasaki Concourse on craigslist for $1,400.
I really wish you would have recorded that ordeal. Would've been an epic vlog
i mean im not from the US but ive kept my bikes under €1000 so far, in fact the most expensive out of the five bikes ive bought was €600 :D Ive done week long touring with one and plan on doing more of that in the future. Just got to be willing to do some maintenance and basic jobs and you can find gold
We are open in Cheyenne, WY. Roll on out man!
I bought an 87 intruder for $1000 and rode it across Canada. Had a few little issues but it was an awesome trip!
Yo Shadetree there is a 2000 Kawasaki Concours for sale on Craigslist in Orlando $2,400 I'm sure you could talk him down... Great bike
Might as well just go to Pasco county
Dude Naples?????? Thats right by where I live!! Ahhh how did I not know you were coming through :[
Wow that is crazy! I live near Tampa and I would not go look at a bike in certain areas like New Port Richey lol
Meet and greet during Sturgis? First week of August. Would love to meet you in South Dakota, I'll travel on the weekend.
Thanks for the advice my friend!
Every Craigslist exchange in Kentucky is like that! I sold a horse trailer years ago and was offered a broken SEGA game, sex and drugs for it...the lady got offended when I refused the offer...but thats family for you.
"Feral kids" LOL!
I guess free range children is the preferred PC nomenclature 😂
Can’t make that shit up, thanks for sharing the story
Great and funny vid, glad I wasn't there 😂. Hey I need a windshield extender, where do you find those?
Amazon man!
And I thought my looking at a 95 trans am parts car was bad. I drove and down that road 4 times then got the message “were the ones shooting guns”
Your April 12 video with cheap used bikes from Harley might have been a better bet than the discounted junky special on good old craigslist. That 99 Electra glide at the Harley dealership seemed the best bet, even though the price was at 3k.
Come on up to milwaukee there is goldwings for 500 bucks, 750 bucks that need cleaned carbs and batteries
Side note, u come up lemme know theres a bar up here you should take a trip on up to called the bunker. You see this josh you look up the bunker in waterford. Great next trip?
No story from Florida surprises me anymore...
"...if a little stressful". Dude, understatement of the year. I woulda dipped as soon as he said get the angle grinder. Clearly you had serious interest in the bike, lol
You should have not gotten freaked out , that’s another day in Methville . A neighborhood coming to you very soon ‼️
Florida....
tweekers suck
ive been searching for an old harley to buy and build up cause of u!
LOL did he jus say farrell shirtless children. The way he describes the scene is just too funny.
The FXR sounds great , reliable and presently your favourite ride
Excellent video! This made my day!
Wow Josh that was some weird shit. You didn’t mention if Billy Bob was sitting on the porch playing duelling banjos.
"God damn needles on the ground"
I lost my shit when you said that.
