Clean bike. I love the concept behind this series too. Keep up the good work. When you said $2k is a lot of money for most people, well, it is. It is for me too, but if you think about this...stop smoking and brew your own coffee. Stop giving your money to the Marlboro man and Starshmucks and there's $50 a week you can put away toward a bike. It's the first week of June...start now! @@shadetreesurgeon it's what a lot of folks need to hear. Even more folks need to inject some purpose back into their lives. We lost a lot this year, and we continue to lose. How is Ybor fairing? Stay safe man.
@Shelby TRF oh absolutely! It's Minty as fuck. But some people would refer to it and my goldwing as "shitty" because of the age and mileage. But I'm with shade tree here. You CANNOT beat the value of an old goldwing.
Cannot wait to see your videos on the redwing. I just found a 1993 Aspencade here in the panhandle of Florida for $1,400.00. It has 100608 miles. Bought it for my father in law, runs great no major flaws and he's riding it everywhere down in south Florida. Truly enjoy your videos and again cannot wait for more of the mighty redwing roadtrip videos!!
1981 Honda Goldwing interstate I bought off of offer up for 200 best investment I’ve made because the owner didn’t know what was going on with it so I bought it and replaced one fuse and it cranked right up. On top of that I took all the fairings off and made it into a bobber love your videos man. Keep it up!
I just subscribed to this channel. Turns out I am starting to look for a used gold-wing. I picked up a few useful tips to consider. I’ll keep watching. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and insight.
Amazing bike Mr Shade! Looking forward to watching the trip. If I had a bike right now, I'd meet you thru the Poconos. Some amazing back roads up there!
That's my first bike 20 years ago! Wow memories! I did a lot of touring on mine. I would suggest to bring some heat, you know the can stuff. On long rainy days of riding and low gas I was left on the side of the road. Threw a can of heat in it and that took care of the problem. Other than that, the ole Wing never let me down. Keep good gas in it and you won't have any problems.
i have owned MANY Gold wings & i just love those bikes. You can never go wrong with a Honda. Now I have a 2003 Honda VTX 1800 R comfortable and fast.Good luck on your journey Brother.
Blue Ridge parkway and Skyline drive. You won't regret it. Did both on an 87 Wing when I was 18yrs old (was my Dads bike) and if your in Tennessee Tail of the Dragon, if you need to "scrape some rust" off the pipes... dragged every one of the 318 curves but still fun.
Love it bro! I had an '86 GL1200 from 1995 until 2003. I put over 130k miles on it, pulled a hack with it thru Ohio winters too. It was a work-horse! You done good-IMO. BTW, get the Gates brand belts instead getting them from Honda... You'll save a good chunk of change.
My first wing was a 75 bought in Germany, shipped it back to the States and was my only transportation for 2 years. If you can't go coast to coast on a wing I doubt you would find any other bike in you 2 grand price range that would make it w/o big problems. You've got this, ride on brother🤠
I bought a 2003 Kawasaki Voyager in Warrior Alabama and rode it back home to North Worcester county Massachusetts in 2 days (1200 miles) Highway’n it is the absolute balls! And the day after I got home my wife and I went to Hampton Beach New Hampshire! These touring bikes are great for the open rode but kind of car-ish when out bar hopping! Great video!
My first bike is, I still have it, an '83 Kawasaki KZ750 LTD 2 cylinder belt drive. It cost me $500 to buy and it didn't run or have front break reservoir. I got it to start the next day. Found a new reservoir, and learned to ride a motorcycle. It lasted for one season before the starter clutch quit on me. I got that fixed... blah, blah, blah... It's an old bike and now a permanent project. This year I picked up an '04 Heritage Classic for 6k, runs perfect and has been great to me. I've promised myself to get the KZ back on the road, so that is the summer project.
I got and keep getting friends into motorcycles for not a lot of money. My 1986 Kawasaki 454 build so far over the last 2.5 years has cost me $3,400 and a lot of the stuff I done to the bike because I wanted to do it, not that it needed to be done. The bike wasn't running at all and I got it back on the road within a month of working on it here and there. Even with 33,000 miles on it it doesn't feel out of step at all for its age and neglect. And I've had several friends that have paid $2,000 or less to have a fully running motorcycle out of the gate and some still have their bikes to this day. Congrats on the Goldwing
Saw this on instagram last week and I'm still excited. If you're going to upstate NY and Niagara Falls. Check out Alexandria Bay before you head back south. It's the home of the 1000 islands and, not that far from the falls on a bagger and absolutely gorgeous. Plus you'll head south from the top of NY too so you'll have even more bragging rights at the farmers markets.
I'm 100% down for as many Goldwing videos as possible. Something special about 80's Hondas. Also, if you get within even a days ride of Massachusetts I'll find you and buy you a beer.
Man.....good luck with it. Great to see somebody make their dream come true. But that FL heat would kill me, been gone from there so many years I've forgotten how oppressive 100* can be. But if I DID live near you I'd be renting space from you to put my 68 BSA 650cc Chopper on a lift and see if I could enlist the help I need to finish off the build and finally get the thing back on the road.
Dude, I bought an 84 GL1200 Aspencade, 30K miles, everything works, in almost like new condition for $2500 in march. They're FUN bikes. Your gonna like it
Grand-dad jeans. I love it! Looking forward to the cross country adventure tour! Please do a video on changing the timing belt, interested in how that's done. My old Ducati 750 monster spun one, destroying the engine. Ever since, I've avoided bikes with timing belts. If it's relatively straightforward to change the one on the wing, who knows, maybe I'll reconsider...
I rode an 86 Aspencade, put 100,000 miles on it and yes if it was maintained, i would ride that across country. Looking forward to see your next series.
Nice find. I have been reading that it is a good idea to replace not only the belt but the pulleys as well when you do them. Otherwise they may wear the belt much faster
I had an '83 Goldwing aspencade that I stripped down and went with a cafe style with it ... Sadly, just got rid of it. Thing was a beast all stripped down and lightened up with it's Box4 1100cc engine ... loved it, but had to make room for more projects
Keep an eye on the water pump. I have had 2 wings with that high of mileage, and both needed water pumps. Hell, drive the thing up to Wisconsin and I will replace the head gaskets and water pump for you! 87 is the last year for the 1200, so as I understand it, the STATOR is not problematic on this bike. It looks like they put an aftermarket Cruise control on there too. The factory Cruise is fairly easy to fix and it works like a dream. The only problem is you can't set it for speeds greater than 80mph. (not that I would ever exceed our legally posted limits anywhere).
My second bike I owned was a 82 gl1100 nicknamed the Old Wing. I bought it off of a mechanic who loved it and took great care of it for $1200. As i am riding it home the G in gold falls off lol The whole point was to see if i wanted a full dresser bike. After about 3 months I bought a Road glide and I sold the Old Wing to my neighbor for the same price and he still rides it to this day. Great purchase man and enjoy it
In looking at used touring myself. Yamaha's V4 1,300 cc Venture? Gives Purple Rain a good alternative. Reading it's actually a more comfortable leg position and seat.
"$2,000 is still a ton of money to a lot of people." Thank you! Being a new rider trying to find my first used motorcycle in Honolulu, and if a rare Craigslist posting of a bike under $2k even shows up the bike is in pieces, or has no title (aka stolen), or is back-taxed so many years it's no longer a
If you do the minimum for the Honda Engines, they will run and run and run. My CX 500 only had two issues: 1.) CDI didn't worke anymore (Which is a well known weakness of the CX500, it's Hondas first CDI and those will break down after 20 ~ 30 ~ 40+ years) and 2.) the Wather Cooling leaked a little bit, I think the earlier Owner didn't really serviced it.
Awesome addition. Three years ago I saved an 85 GL1200 from sitting outside under a tree for eight to ten years. It was rough. The previous owner gave it to me... $0.00. Did a lot to get it to where it is today. Love the bike. Drove from NJ to Nasville on it in one day. I cant say its been trouble free, but its now at a point where I could get on it tomorrow and drive to California. Best highway bike. Excited to see what you have planned.
Good buy Shadetree... I have an 82 1100 Classic...came with all the gaudy vetter bags and fairing, stripped most of it. They are for sure awesome bikes, ride great very comfy, most unique power delivery I've ever experienced... but good luck finding parts. Fixing mine up was so irritating I decided I'm not even doing the work on it myself anymore, let the boys at the shop make some money! Enjoy it
You taught me how to ride my shadow 750. Watch your vids all night and went out and bought the thing and drove it all the way home 😂 nothing like a dirt bike but the concepts are similar. Thanks bud 👊
It had to happen eventually. On my third now, a 15 I had from 97 to 11, an 18 for six months in 2011, and another 18 since 2017. Rode an 12 a few years ago, seemed quite small and frantic compared to my 15. Really comfortable, though, and loved by those that have them. Looked after, they will run until the sun goes out.
BTDT - In 1990 I bought a 1983 Honda GL1100 for $2,750. Rode it home and did a full service on it, replaced the tires and battery and both fork seals. Then I took it on a (month long) 10,000 mile trip from So Cal, across the country, up the east coast into Canada and Nova Scotia, back down into the US and across the northern states back to Washington, then down the west coast back to my home in So Cal. I cleaned it up and sold it to my neighbor for $3,000. He put a few miles on it and then a dealer gave him $3,500 for it on a trade in for a new GL. Only problem I had was a leaking front brake master cylinder fairly early in the trip. Stopped at a Honda dealer and within a few minutes they figured out that I had just over tightened the screws holding the cover on. Removed and replace so that the gasket wasn't squished out of shape and never had another hickup on that bike. Although it was a bit hard to start in Michigan when we woke up and had ice cycles hanging from the bikes due to the cold rain the previous night.
Hi shady the 1200 wing is a good one and handles well too put a spanner over it before you go belts are replaced at 25,000 miles but can do much moor it's up to you, Irish valkyire man.
The touring bikes from the 80's have a certain charm that the newer ones don't. Function over form, your never going to see one from that era that looks good but I love them. I bought a 87 Suzuki Cavalcade which is basicly Suzuki's clone of the Goldwing. Had 110000 miles on it, tore it about have way down to clean and replace a few things, and I've got over 40k more on it now. I did go darkside and put a car tire on it, the mileage you get out of it is amazing.
Awright..the 'Wing' has been aquired! DefinitelyThe correct kit for the trip. Your backside will appreciate the ride! Looking forward to following you on your journey
Lol I love the Charlie Brown themed music in the background. That bike is absolutely beautiful. Let me know when you are going to be up north. The Adirondack Mountains are calling your name. That goldwing was meant for that.
Best bike for the trip Josh. I bought a brand new Goldwing GL1100 (naked)....(the bike, not me)...in 1982 for £2,100. It was one of those bikes I wish I'd never sold. Absolutely fantastic bike. Great to see you found a good one. Good luck with all you do with or on it. Stay safe my friend.
It would be cool to know your whereabouts whilst on your big adventure. I would definitely meet up somewheres! I’ve been wanting to go to Niagara Falls. Can’t wait for this series
Love the way Videos pop up on my TH-cam.. FINALY the beginning video of the Bangkok Bagger, lol LOVE watching y'alls videos.. EVEN if i don't watch them in order
I just bought an '86 Interstate 1200 for $1600. I love it. It's my first one. Had it about a week and we went from Winter Haven to Clearwater Beach and back. Compared to my '98 ZG1000 it's like riding a Cadillac. The Kawasaki feels like a toy now.
Congrats! Looking forward to some Honda content on the channel! "No Wing, no prayer" as the old shirts used to say. I've kinda, sorta been looking at BMW k1300gt's as you can scoop those up for $5k or less but am currently more interested in how far I can go on my 800cc Suzuki before it becomes intolerable.
Been watching since you started the 650 chopper. Just subbed today because of this vid. I too buy used bikes. I can usually get a decent bike with liability for 1\2 of what my buds pay for their new bikes in a year. The best bit? Riding no matter the weather because it's a cheap bike.

It is for me too, but if you think about this...stop smoking and brew your own coffee. Stop giving your money to the Marlboro man and Starshmucks and there's $50 a week you can put away toward a bike. It's the first week of June...start now! Come March you'll have $2k for a bike and with any luck a tax refund check for a Helmet, and gear. Start today!
Great advice my man!
@@shadetreesurgeon it's what a lot of folks need to hear. Even more folks need to inject some purpose back into their lives. We lost a lot this year, and we continue to lose. How is Ybor fairing? Stay safe man.
YEaaahhhHHHhh!!!! Shitty Goldwings for the Win!!!
Yes I’ve been waiting patiently to see that gold wing on video. Congrats Josh! 🍻
In the words of Anakin Skywalker, “This is where the fun begins!”... Literally cannot wait for this series! You’re awesome man!
That windshield is cool as heck, very unique. Loving it !!
I am so looking forward to your adventures on that Goldwing, I am genuinely excited.
That’s awesome can’t wait to see where this goes. Actually a nice looking bike for 80s model
Dope ! Can’t wait to see you ride it cross country! Much love from San Diego California!
Once again, Ole Shady got me interesting in a bike older than dirt. Good viddy, looking forward to the series.
Someday I will be coming down to Florida just to ride with The Shadetree Surgeon!!
Shadetree Army!!!!
Great purchase man and enjoy it
I see that bike came equipped with a Warp Core. lol Because that's the fastest 200mi ride I've ever seen.
Congratulations on your Craigslist find! I can't wait for the video of the trip!! I'm excited to watch it!!
Can’t wait for the adventure. I will live vicariously through you buddy. 👍🏼
Yes dude! This is excellent. I can’t wait to see how you get on. 🙌🏼
In looking at used touring myself. Yamaha's V4 1,300 cc Venture? Gives Purple Rain a good alternative. Reading it's actually a more comfortable leg position and seat.
"$2,000 is still a ton of money to a lot of people." Thank you! Being a new rider trying to find my first used motorcycle in Honolulu, and if a rare Craigslist posting of a bike under $2k even shows up the bike is in pieces, or has no title (aka stolen), or is back-taxed so many years it's no longer a
I just picked up a 85 goldwing aspencade couple of months ago for $1000.00, love this bike because it has all the room for my welding gear
Enjoy it
I'm actually really stoked to see the new bike. Have always liked the sharpnosed wings...
Brilliant! That bike looks like a steel. Looking forward to this. Keep up the good work, love your content.
You taught me how to ride my shadow 750. Watch your vids all night and went out and bought the thing and drove it all the way home 😂 nothing like a dirt bike but the concepts are similar. Thanks bud 👊
Brilliant you got your Bike man.. I like it...enjoy your journey..I look forward to watching.. thanks for sharing
Big Red... bike will serve you well. Can't wait to see all the adventures of you touring on it.
Josh I saw a Goldwing fried from Florida sun with 300k miles and it started and purred like new. He drove it to work most days. I was very impressed.
Ever since I saw this on Instagram i've been chomping at the bit for the video! What a beauty!
Riding no matter the weather because it's a cheap bike.
i am very new to bikes (still looking to buy one) :) i can thank you tremendously for the encouragement and acredit you for getting me reallly into motorcycles so thank you so much! i cant wait to see your adventures on the goldwing! living a dream :) stay weird buddy
Iv been looking at these to! I have a r6 , monster and Kawa 650 but I want something more couch like! And these Honda's can be found so cheap!! Have fun with it!!
I bought an '88 Goldwing 1500 with 96k for $250 !!! guy was selling it for $500 and decided to "Bless Me".. Thanks!!
Drove if 50 miles home.. it was like riding a nice soft couch.. Just needs Batt, & Tires., Starts with no choke super easy.
Niagara Falls! Slowly I turn ,step by step ,inch by inch. Looking forward to seeing the series!
