It's such a timeless song because almost everyone understands the pain of loss and how when you compare the version of events from any two people they almost always will diverge into very different narratives based on their point of view.
This is such a deep video. You can see and feel the anguish on both the party's faces. I like how he acknowledged there was fault on both sides and portrayed the female's viewpoint, though tempered by the words, "You didn't have to cut me off." In other words, it didn't have to end like it did, with her breaking off the friendship in addition to the relationship. Then there is the painting of the tapestry of his life throughout the video, and she is just erased from it at the end. Wow. VERY deep...VERY powerful.
It's a whole different song depending on whether you listen to the audio or watch the video. It's just a cute catchy song on the radio, but when you look at the video, you see the incredible sadness in his face.
The guy wanted to demote her to "friends with benefits"... she said NOoooooo! He was surprised 🤣 Great song! Version with only the vocals is even more powerful!
Aaaaand now this is stuck in my head again. It was stuck in my head for MONTHS at one point. The story being told by this song is relatable to everyone at some point in their life, and I love that realness.
I feel the painting represents that he was feeling whole prior to letting his heart out. The painting is a representation of the broken relationship. The more he sings the more he is brought back into his brokenness. As she starts to sing, she was still in that hurt and broken which is why she had to cut him off, her way of dealing with it. but she sees he is still the same broken person as he sings and confronts him to no avail. Once she realizes things have not changed, she removes herself emotionally.
Every lyric, how it's sung, all the meaning behind all the lyrics. It's a simple song, but it's one just about everyone who's been in relationships that didn't end so well can relate to. And it's one of those songs that just get stuck in your head.
This won song won a Grammy award and Prince presented it to him. He was so awestruck when Prince said "I really like your song" he looked like he was about to faint!
Such a vibe, and such nostalgia... I miss this guy and the times he came in. His song became an instant classic, and I listened to more of his catalogue other than this one. "Bronte" and "Hearts a mess" being one of the other neat songs he has.
This is one of my top ten songs of all time, which is crazy for an artist like me and the simplicity of the track. But it is just so Damn perfect! "Have your friends collect your records and then change your number!" A xylophone has never sounded so damn perfect. Hard to believe the genius Kygo didn't produce the track. Great reaction as always my man, one love
You made my morning! Somebody That I Used To Know was in HEAVY rotation at my house about 10 years ago (I could be off on the timeframe), but I LOVED to belt this song! Thanks for your take on it and your humor!!!! God bless!
You're the second reaction I've seen to this song - both times the phrase "They know exactly what they're doing" was used. 👍 A masterpiece of a breakup song. Simple, but packs a punch. Thank you for reacting to this.
Yes u could very well be right. This tune does pack quite a punch despite its subtle overall presentation vocals and instrument playing.. Often less is best.
Last time I heard this song i was like 13, being 17 (18 in 3 weeks) and have been in a relationship, this makes me cry. And i been hearing this song throughout my childhood too
6:54 Van, Yeah there's definitely something that sounds like a kid's Xylophone in there. Feels like a similar device as in "What A Fool Believes" by The Doobie Brothers 43 years ago had that happy child-like sound combined with sad break-up lyrics. ...which you also reacted to.
This song has so many twists and turns. It's truly a hypnotic song with its melodies and will stick with you for days and days. What I take from this song is that he dated someone before Kimbra. For whatever reason they broke up but he can't completely move on from her. He then met Kimbra and started a relationship with her but could not let go of his previous love. So, as time went on he would do and say things to Kimbra to wound her and then blame her in hopes that she will want to break up, but remain friends. When she realizes he's not going to change and she's finally had enough she breaks up with him and he's fine with it because he's still hooked on his ex. It sounds like she at first still wants to be friends but you know how hard that is when you truly love someone, so she decided to cut him off completely, had her friends go over and collect all her records and then changed her number so he didn't have any way to reach back out to her. He couldn't understand why she couldn't be friends and that's because her love for him was much deeper than his for her because he was still hung up on somebody that he used to know. She moved on and he's still fighting the feelings he has for his ex. He's never really going to be able to give all his love to someone until he finally works through his feelings he has with his ex. Crazy...I feel like most of us have been in 1 or both of those situations before and can feel both of their pain. At the end the paint is removed from her and she is out of the picture.
This song is so interesting. Always nice to see a real oddball of a track actually chart. I try to refrain from throwing out suggestions, as I know you're busy, but I'd love your input on the song Still Swinging by Papa Roach. When you have time, of course. LFR fam forever.
Gotye is meticulous in his music. This song took years to get just how he wanted it. It's his most commercially successful song however he has many more songs. Hearts a Mess is my favourite and also an awesome video.
Late but great reaction. Somehow I went down a rabbit hole of these reactions glad to have found yours. This song is about a Narcissist listen as he tells her how hurt he is and then insults her. He told her when they broke up she wouldn't catch him hung up on somebody that he used to know. He essentially told her just as he was insulting her in the lyrics she's just somebody that he used to know, so she changed her number and stuff. She reminded him that he said she would never catch him hung up on somebody that he used to know and how he blamed her for everything and how she was always trying to pick apart what he said. Hes all like it hurts but uh yea I don't need you and this was likely how their relationship was and what she meant by what she said.
been a lurking subscriber! First comment - Van you are awesome. I really enjoy the fun, intelligence and depth you bring to your reactions. Right on, sir.
Best review reaction with this video You the only one that actually commented re appreciation for the artwork On a live version you can check out the electronic instruments.Everything fits so well and highly innovative Thanks!
Walk off the earth does a version of this song where they're all playing this instrumental on one guitar. Would love to see your reaction to that version as well!
Someone on another reaction video mentioned something that after you hear it, makes this video obvious. The male character is naked to start the video, he is painting a picture of his view of events that include her, and when she tells her story she is effectively taking herself out of the picture when the paint is disappearing.
This is a very interesting video, because of the symbols. The naked body is a symbol of vulnerability. As he was singing his body was painted to match the background, which I think symbolizes how he felt invisible. The girl was also naked and painted up to match to match the background, but as the song continued she was uncovered by the paint.
Too me gotye definitely has something I can’t find in music anymore and I can only call it that calm scream he does when he says you didn’t have to cut me off - because I don’t know if there’s an actual term for how he makes what seems like a smooth calm yell too me I haven’t seen something like that in a long time and so I continue to love this song
you just made my morning my friend !!! this was out when i was much younger ....but just went through this...im going toture her with this true memory lol..... and most of all view / input is honestly funny and factual as you say it ! great job please keep'em coming ✌

I picked it up. Definitely reinforced in the video. His deadpan face ect.
To me, the most impactful thing is when she is 'unpainted' from the tapestry of his life at the end.
And he starts to look ashamed when she's getting angry, that was what made be clock they have a very different idea of what the relationship was
Well the lyrics are sad either way
The guy wanted to demote her to "friends with benefits"... she said NOoooooo! He was surprised 🤣 Great song! Version with only the vocals is even more powerful!
When Gotye won song of the year from Prince, Prince said it was his favorite song in recent years! That’s a dope review!
Aaaaand now this is stuck in my head again. It was stuck in my head for MONTHS at one point. The story being told by this song is relatable to everyone at some point in their life, and I love that realness.
That's why I watch a seemingly endless loop of reaction videos until it's outta my brain. Lmao
Relatable round about now. Lucky me.
Kimbra is awesome.

I can honestly say this is one of the best songs ever .
Man i love this song. My hearts a mess shows a lot of his voice and artistic side
"Heart's a Mess" = #FACTS
@@marymazzulli6971 Like Drawing Blood is my favorite album of his

I like how the picture is painted by the words he says...like you making your own reality and that pic starts to be undone when she speaks up
Loved it when Prince presented them with an award and said he loved the song, highest compliment ever!

She has her own story to tell about the relationship, and it rings true.
Instant classic... Perfectly blended music and vocals. Love it
Bro, your authentic nature is your success. Don't change! Man respect.
Definitely one of the most beautiful songs ever made.

This song never gets old
BTW, these two are fascinating to look at. Gorgeous in a complex way.
I think when he sings in the chorus his voice really sounds like Peter Gabriel great vocals👏
"Quiet complexity"-- I love that!!
I just watched your reaction. I love how you described the "quiet complexity". Awesome phrase!!!
You made my morning! Somebody That I Used To Know was in HEAVY rotation at my house about 10 years ago (I could be off on the timeframe), but I LOVED to belt this song!
Thanks for your take on it and your humor!!!! God bless!
You’re right. 2011 hit. Chart-topper worldwide.
The whole song is tight, their vocals is even tighter. They sound great together. I love the engert they are putting off and feeding off of.
The true live version shows how they are able to blend and fade so well. True artists.
I love when you’re like “tell your story baby girl”
Yeah. It was nice. 😘✨
When this came out...
It was different than anything else.
Very unique song! 🎹🎤🎶🎸🥁
Its a great song and the video is just great being painted out of the picture . says it all
This is such a creative video. Painting a picture then erases the memory. Toxic relationship!
After a love affair, the hardest words to hear are "you're just somebody I used to know" !

Awesome reaction Brotha Man. Peace to the Family. ✌🏾☝🏾👍🏾
His vocals remind me of Sting. Maybe it's just me, but that's who I thought it was when I first heard this.
Its Sting's son ..
He is compared to Sting alot! It's not just you.

"A quiet complexity", well said.
LOVE THIS SONG! Thanks for reacting to it. Very good song. Love you bro! Lfrfamily hit that thannggg
You get one side, then the other side and then the mutual sadness. With a nice little groove. 🙂
I love the imagery. Most ppl miss. It shows in a relationship being vulnerable.... the presence or absence of paint.
That different kind of pain that comes from being dismissed as nothing.
Walk off the earth does a version of this song where they're all playing this instrumental on one guitar. Would love to see your reaction to that version as well!
Love all your reactions.....but love that You caught on to the "back ground instrimental on this Song"....Cheers!!! 😁👍
I did love this one when it came out, have it on my phone. Good one. This is the only song I know by this artist.
I cant belive you never came across this song before.
It was *everywhere* in the 2010s
He minds me of Sting when he sings the chorus.
I feel like men need to vibe to the music first, and vocals come second. This song has both. Anyone who's ever loved and lost that love can relate.
Love this song
Ten years later and, though I still love the song, I still can’t hear it without singing “baa baa black sheep have you any wool?” 🤣
I just found your channel, I'm so glad I did!
So great
You’re one jive turkey and hilarious!!.. Thanks dude.. great song.. probably one of the best hooks in a pop song in a long time 👌🏻

Walk off the earth does such a sick version of this. Love the original though, great reaction!
The instrument you want the name of is a Theremin. It's a stringless electronic harp type instrument
It used to be on the radio all the freakin' time... lol
Great song choice to react to. Really enjoyed this video 🙋🏻♀️🙌🏼👏🏼👍🏼💜🇨🇦

Also when he sings " Somebody " it kinda reminds me of Sting.
