In my opinion, being a musician myself, this is one of the greatest pop songs ever written. Fenom hits it on the head as to why. It has everything needed.
You have to be emotionally dead inside not to resonate with this song. Vocal arrangement, lyrical content, elegant sonic production, all of it is exactly what Fenom said, "It's fire!" ❤
Thank goodness for Fenom, man. I don't know what these two guys were listening to, but the vocals and the emotion they put into them as well as the chorus makes it obvious why the song was a global hit. I don't expect a song that hits #1 to automatically be good, in fact so much absolute garbage "I'm Too Sexy" "The Macarena" etc. tends to be popular, that I think the reverse is usually true. Thankfully, as the intellectual of the trio, Fenom gets it.
Oh Good Lord I never understood the craziness behind "The Macarena"! As for "I'm Too Sexy" the Song was written as a Parody of the Fashion industry and was being sarcastic at the time.

Yeah. Meaningful but abstract video, great music, good lyrics for a pop song, great singing with nice harmony, but a bit too short. Overall really good.

When can you hear a line like “you didn’t have to stoop so low” in a song. That alone makes it different. Fenom is right, it’s a fenomenale song and fun to sing along to.
This song so great cause it makes you feel and think. You don’t get this honesty in overproduced pop „songs“ anymore. No stupid outfits, no stupid choreographies, no autotune, no bling, just simplicity, down to earth heartfelt emotion! And the lyrics do the same: both sides of the story that comes to one point that everyone can relate: pain from a broken heart for both! I think you guys should listen again!
This is actually a very good song and video. If you ever get a chance to watch KImbra's own videos and live performances on TH-cam, she's an amazing singer and performer in her own right. Check out "Kimbra - Settle Down (live SXSW 2012 - Spotify Sessions)" and "'Two Way Street' | Billboard Live Studio Session".
He sings like 70's Peter Gabriel in the choruses. That is a song. It has intro, verse, chorus, perhaps bridge before chorus. It has a thing to tell. It isn't some oneliner on a sampled old track.
I love this song. The lyrics are beyond cheesy, just a totally different approach to creating a love song...plus the instrumentation is so special. You need to hear this a couple of times and then this will haunt you forever, in a positive way...
Hey Fenom202, My partner always thought that it was Peter Gabriel when he first herd it . Great reaction guy's. His song ''Your hearts a mess'' is fantastic!

If you want to see Kimbra absolutely kill it you should check out her cover of “Plain Gold Ring” live at Sing Sing Studio. She was one of the first people to embrace loop stations in her studio and live performances.
I think when we hear "Number 1 across the world," it's easy to think of a club thumper or a crowd rouser, but thus was one that every single person enjoyed on their own at the same time.
I think they were expecting something upbeat that they could really bop to and I think they were surprised that a song that was slow and emotional was so popular. They're probably used to hearing number one songs be pop or dance or hip hop. So when a song that is just emotionally charged and musically expressive it may not hit. Popularity for this song wasn't because it was such an addicted to beat or anything. But it was a song that resonated and really gets you in your feelings.
The reason it’s was number 1 throughout the world it was so original, so relatable, a timeless song is almost impossible to write, and they did just that a true masterpiece
Way too many reactors pander to their audience because it's safe, at least in the short run. But long term, it's a bad idea. You guys do it right. Three friends being authentic is way more interesting and makes me more interested in watching. I would never give you a thumbs down for not liking a song, any song.
It's because it is universally relatable. We've all given everything to a relationship only to have it cut off as if it never happened. The most lonely feeling is to give your best effort and it not make a blip on the radar
Fenom totally gets it because he hears the whole song with the lyrics. I am so sorry the other two guys(sorry if you are important music people I don't know who you are) were just in their heads about what THEIR number one song would look like. Please get out of your heads. Goyte (pronounced Go-tee-aye) personally took a hit for this song going global because he was never interested in being famous. I know crazy for someone not wanting to be FAMOUS right???? The fame for this song challenged him. Sorry, I am saying it, this is not about the US and YOU and what you think a number one should be, this song is recognized globally for a reason. Please get out of your personal limited space and appreciate what the world appreciates. This song went viral because of the music and for the lyrics of what a complicated breakup looks like. This song is incredible not only musically but lyrically. Really listen to the song and the story they are telling. I am so happy they won grammys for this.
One important part of the lyrics is when she sings “ you said that you could let it go and that I wouldn’t Catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know “ meaning that during their relationship he was still thinking about his ex, even in the video his face looks guilty when she sings it, and she kind of shouts it in his face. It’s a very passionate argument woven into a song.
The song has heart and emotion and it's got a great chorus- this is not only catchy it's got heart. A song doesn't have to have a million bells and whistles to hit you and become a global number one hit.
This one hit a the right particular time and blew up. I had been turned on to him by the streaming radio station, Radio Paradise, about two years prior to this being released off his third album. They would play a couple songs from his second album which at that time was only available in Australia / New Zealand. A year after that they released it in the states a year after that and I listened to that album on repeat. So when this came out I was excited to hear it. Became overplayed on quickly though. It does still listen well now. He records in his home playing most instruments himself , some samples and looping tracks. I've seen him live and there are actually more live playing than I actually thought. His voice and talent is amazing live. Regretfully he hasn't released anything more since that I'm aware. His songs "Hearts a Mess" and "Coming Back", were the songs that first drew me in. Then from this album, "Don't Worry We'll Be Watching", "Bronte", and "Eyes Wide Open" are some good tracks.
You have to take the lyrics and relatability into account. The song was this dude talking about his ex like she was way too harsh at the end of their relationship. And then when she comes in, you hear the other side of the story from her. And then singing together was the fight. It's honestly brilliant.
Is there any song that isn't a headphone song? You can barely hear anything when comes to instrument and vocal performance. Can also hear when a song sucks a lot, autotune, bad arrangement, etc. It's a appalling to listen to music on a bad headphone or sound box, borderline criminal. The sound engineering and vocal performance, instruments, arrangement, story told, the way you hear both sides, are all spectacular, that's why it was #1.
It wasn't the music or style of music......it was the LYRICS! Love the venom. That is what people reacted to. Gaslighting. Communication. Honesty. Simplicity but hitting hard is power. (do you guys like Phil Collins? I doubt it.) Sting is a great reference! Spot on.
I'm shocked shocked that Corey didn't connect with this lyrically and musically! He's usually first on board (sometimes the only 1 on board with a song). If you are of a certain age, and the lyrics don't hit you hard, you are a lucky so and so 🎵🎶💚
This was one of those songs that just caught fire one summer. It was everywhere, but I don’t think there was ever a follow up by either singer, so it kind of faded
I'm 67 and was brought up on prog rock and heavy metal / hard rock a lot of recent music (not all) just sounds the same autotune and in the same key no charisma no difference when this came out loved it was different both in key and style and built slowly from the verry simple start to a more complex piece and the lyrics were relatable and the singing had emotion which is what counts in a good track no wonder it went to No one.
This songs good because I was like 12 when it came out… big time in my life and now it’s also like I can relate to it. Definitely a top 3 pop song for me
I hear Sting a bit in the vocals, but compositionally it sounds like Peter Gabriel. Someone did a remix with synths...and it takes on a whole Mandela effect, where you're like "Oh yeah, I kinda remember this song from back in the day..." 😀
I don't know what the other two were talking about. Fenom is on point on this one. Another artist song ya'll should check out is Hi Ren by Ren - will blow your mind
When I first seen this on TH-cam when it first came out I knew it was something special, I even emailed the director and stated that she deserved a Grammy. They stopped giving out Grammy's for directors of videos that year, go figure. Fenom listened to the lyrics and was able to relate, so he could really feel the emotions that this song elicits! The concept I got from the videos was that Goyte was painting his story, then Kimbra was like wait a minute, that's not the way it went down. She therefore takes herself out of his picture, just like she took herself out of his life. Also, the melody is very similar to Baa baa black sheep, so it kind of familiar and that makes it even more catchy, I do belive.
How many records did somebody I used to know sell? "Somebody That I Used to Know" reached number one in more than 23 national charts and charted inside the top ten in more than 30 countries around the world. By the end of 2012, the song became the best-selling song of that year with 11.8 million copies sold, ranking among the best-selling digital singles of all time. Peace out.
Couldn't wait to see your reactions. You might have liked it better without looking it up first and seeing how incredibly popular it became. I was much the same, but it really grows on you and the performances are fantastic. And a different video too. Listen a few more times and you'll get past your original thoughts. Fenom202 got it. Well over a billion views!
I remember this song being cool because it sounded so different. Also, this song probably hit women more than men. I'm a guy, but this song had a guy complaining about this girl, and then she told him that he was basically a stalker who is controlling and awful and that's why she is someone that he used to know.
This is a great song. Creative adaptation of a jazz guitar piece with smart, raw lyrics and clever vocal arrangement. Overplayed at the time, but that's not uncommon.
Great song and film clip! His best song though is Hearts A Mess! It's just Gotye aka Wally De Backer who is a genius, using samples and plays multiple instruments to create the sound.
I feel like this a lot.. I think videos can detract from music.. I think something so different artistically from music is one thing but layer video on top and it can be detracting. I see reactions to David Bowie Ashes to Ashes get same reactions. It's why sometimes I wish u just heard audio only then did video or live versions. I get it though, the video is part of your channel.. just unfortunate. one chance for 1st impression.
I was turned off by the wild saturation of the Ashes to Ashes video. But the Gotye video is simple and perfect for the song. The video was a big part of its success. And hell, who is complaining about Kimbra being naked?
@@GodLovesComics I agree with you. I just wondered if u heard song only, 1st. Does it force someone to allocate full attention and judgment purely on audio. i guess on some level I thinks it's analogous to book vs movie.. In that a book allows reader to fully conceptualize things based on their own interpretation.. Music vs music video falls prey to same. It can be great but can it be a hindrance as well??
@@seangardner9884 I know I heard this song in the video first (and probably every time I've heard it). I was thinking it must have been near the end of MTV actually showing music, but actually I feel pretty certain it was on VH1 instead...and in heavy rotation. That said, I don't even like to watch Reactions when they just listen to the song and an image of the album cover. I always want the visuals as well, or even preferably a live performance. I know what you're saying and it's not a bad analogy, but I feel a much bigger divide between book/film than music/video. Maybe in part because consuming a film takes two hours whereas the book it is adapted from takes two weeks, two months...longer. But the song/video correlation is usually basically the same length (4-5 minutes). There are rare cases when the images of a video are so off-putting that it taints the song for me but they and few and far between. And usually seeing the very same song in a live performance redeems it if it's any good.
@GodLovesComics Just so we're clear.. I love this tune! musically it's a banger with amazing tempo and melody.. Lyrics are highly relatable.. I think the structure of having both sides is very cool. I bought the CD hearing this track alone. (yes 💿 lol.. vinyl would have been 1st choice 😆)
Giving it a like for the last fella. It is a very good song! Maybe not the type u will listen (the first two) but there is no point in saying it wasnt it.
Some songs need more than one listen to really appreciate them. I think Corey and Olli might feel differently with a couple more listens. Corey mentioned that he was anticipating something else, which can cloud the waters when going into a new song.
I think you guys make good points, but it's a weird song in that it was such a great radio hit that didn't need the video. The video is really cool too, but kind of someone else's art. The single is more of a just classic FU breakup song. Radio was still around and this sounded so diff when it came on it captivated you all the way until the chorus which is fire.
I can see both sides on this. I liked the song b/c it’s so different (kudos for the Sting comparison). But I didn’t love it. It does take awhile to get going. Prince loved this song. He actually said so when he opened the envelope and presented Gotye with the Song of the Year Grammy. The award was well deserved.
I remember when Prince presented Gotye with the Record Of The Year Grammy, before announcing the winners name, he said “I love this song.”
yup, that was a great moment
I love it too!!💜💜💜💜

Hello from Germany, maybe you want to react to Depeche Mode? People are People or Everything counts...
The Sting reference is highly underestimate. love your channel 🤘🏻🔥🖤🔥🤘🏻
It's really interesting to watch the live version... VERY good. Also "Heart's a Mess" is a great song with a weird and creative video.
Yeah, not likely to ever make my playlist, but it's definitely relatable subject matter, so I can understand why it resonated with a lot of people.
This song had such a chokehold on me for a minte. I was going through a divorce when this came out.
Man this song is GOATED!!! Everybody has a story like this.
Amazing song❤
Fenom is right, this song was massive but imagine if this had been Sting and Katy Perry.
@GodLovesComics thanks for feedback it's enlightening to learn how others think about things.
Fenom listening to the song and understanding
You guys are overdue for another Led Zeppelin reaction. Just sayin'
Giving it a like for the last fella. It is a very good song! Maybe not the type u will listen (the first two) but there is no point in saying it wasnt it.
This is basically The Police
. awesome song.
Everybody had that ONE that used to know….Song is very “identifiable”.
What was that background noise? Machine guns, etc.
Okay… what’s in the red cup? And can you send me some? 😂
I didn't realize it at the time, but I think Gotye was heavily influenced by Sting.
Aussies and Kiwis do different !
Love this song and a local hip hop artist from my area did a awesome remix/cover of this by the name Cloud House and Young Fade
Smell test? Yeah, things often don't smell right when you have bad taste.
Some songs need more than one listen to really appreciate them. I think Corey and Olli might feel differently with a couple more listens. Corey mentioned that he was anticipating something else, which can cloud the waters when going into a new song.
Go - Tee - Yay (a play on "Gautier") ...
It grows on you...
Now you're just a channel that I used to watch.
This reaction is only getting thumbed up because of Fenom
