Good times. I've sailed twice out of Annapolis. Once on a Gulfstar 40 with a captain and some friends. We sailed all around the Bay for a week. The other time was on a J/24 with a friend and his father. I didn't know much at the time but learned later that his dad was a world class Lightning and J/24 sailor. His name was Don Delorme. Thanks for bringing back fond memories!
This sailing video has it all, tubing, flying, hiking, dining, parts shopping and engineering, and a hurricane just to round it out, Keep them coming, best armchair sailing videos on the tube.
I use navionics but really like predictwind (worth the paid)- able to adjust sail routes and tracks automatically based on weather conditions and also I use anchor pro for an alarm when on anchor- uses gps and sets a threshold that alarms if your anchor drags. especially in middle of night.
Those posts are unmarked fishing nets. During the Annapolis Newport race two years ago we went through one at like 14 knots and just punched through in the middle of the night. Super annoying if you get it snagged on your keel or something. They really should be lit but they aren't.
Yeah i bet i could have just plowed over it now that i know what it was but it was the surprise of it that really got me. At the time i though i was heading toward solid pilings.
Yes, the Chesapeake at night has all sorts of things that can get you..... The nets ARE supposed to be lit. At the very least up to date charts mark their general location. But that doesn't help a lot of times. The upper bay is a bit more civil. Shallower, but civil.
Fantastic ingenuity, especially with your diy tiller. You teach some valuable lessons, just like in your LA to Hawaii video I just watched. You have lived an incredible journey
I use Navionics and i am very happy with it. I like how users can update obstructions etc if they find something. I am thinking of trying OpenCPN on the laptop.
Sam, if ever near Wildwood Crest, NJ (see Cape May) please let me know. Shower, meal/beers, 2mi Landing Marina. I have contacts there and can coordinate slip! Dave 😊 The catharsis I get from your channel is priceless, bud.
Cool that you put the lightening behind you and visited the sites we see: We keep our boat at Deale, live near Harpers Ferry, hiked the AT, fished the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, visited Naval Academy (and watched Navy play football), visit Annapolis especially boat shows, know the pilings well and Bacon Sails and Marine is the best. Next time let me know - there's more.
Awesome video. Brought back many memories specially brought a huge smile when you visited Ruth Chicks in Annapolis! Our favorite breakfast place. Keep the videos coming.
Brah, the C and D can be tepid, hot sticky and full of mosquitoes in the evening and night, good luck, really enjoyed following your trip, i sail out of Kent narrows so you were right in my neighborhood, cheers
Welcome to Maine Sam & Zoe! Notice you have a jacket on now - you made it just in time for the last gasp of summer. Nights getting chilly now. Stay safe and enjoy the area. Labor-Day weekend looks like perfect weather for exploring.
@@ethandurrett3950 That's really wierd. I would have made that comment on the storming the forts or oyster farming videos. Not sure how it ended up on this one. Maybe beer had something to do with it!
I use to guide white water trips down that run for river and trail outfitters. Harper's ferry is a cool little area. I want to get back down there and fly my drone around down there.
If u ever go back to bears den go to the other side of that mountain and go to bear chase brewery. Beautiful views of land from high above the mountain and sometimes your able to see D.C.
You might think about naming your new dingy Little Al or Al or Allen, after the guy that gave it to you. You always seem so cool, calm, and collected, laid back, chill kind of guy. I always enjoy your videos and really appreciate you being a down to earth type of person. No major overrated drama on your videos and that’s a great thing. Take care and stay safe. Treat Zoe real kind or never ride in that plane again. LOL 😂 Just kidding with ya’ll. LOL 😂
It's a shame you blew right through the Chesapeake. There are so many cool places to explore here and go aground! :) If we had known you were coming, when you did, we had an open "paid for" slip in our marina. Oh well you guys got a plan and not a lot of time before you have to head back.
Did you put any anti-corrosion gel (e.g. duralac) in the screw holes to stop electrolysis in your boom? (I could see that the old fitting had not been treated properly).
What is the name of the marine store where you got the cheek blocks? I need to replace one on my boat and those are the exact ones. I hope they have more. Thanks for your videos and tour clever ideas.
G'day Sam. I live in Australia in queensland, Hervey bay. Hervey bay is the whale watching center in queensland. worth a visit. I use navionics all the time on my tablet and i merge the app with another app called boatbeacon. boatbeacon is like ais, it use google maps and can merge into navionics and runs in the background. Gerard.
@@danielkoehn3209 using it in dog agility I have seen it become brittle and when a dog knocks a bar it splinter and cut the dog. Now only use furniture grade.
@@samholmessailing Thanks for the review. You should review everything you buy. It really helps us novice sailors. It might even attract some corporate sponsors.
I wish I knew you were in Annapolis when you were. I live in Fairfax VA which isn't far from there. There's a really good steakhouse on the other side of that bridge I would've treated you and Zoe to dinner (without me LOL) as thanks for all your hard work putting out these videos. I hiked Harper's Ferry last weekend and did a portion of the AT going thru VA, W. Va, and MD, beautiful isn't it?
If you ever make your way to new york and need help with any projects or just want to help a new sailor get some experience maintaining a boat please let me know!
We went in to Nappy land from a little south of there, many decades ago. 19' daysailer in by city dock, dwarf dinghies like, but other times bare boat charters (rent) for holidays cruising getting away. Middies could have drilled y'all on Hawaii and other boating, had prepped for it, invited by naval sailing club, for instance... Might have bicycled from Arlington to say hi but gone already. Fast Food Lobster, some of what I remember from Maine. Like crabs are around here (no biggie white table cloth stuff)...
Have just watched this video Sam (24/10/20) and in keeping with the other vids I've watched of yours, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Especially the bridge opening. My wife and I left Bristol UK in 2003 to sail to Greece and in leaving we too, needed a bridge swing. The sense of power you get of holding up the City's traffic system is immense, and when we heard that burst of laughter as you passed through the bridge, cracked us up !!!! Barnacle Bern SY Cadbri.
Know that harbor well. Great video. Need to be very careful about hitting the fish traps (the posts that are coming up out of the water) and crab traps especially leaving Herring Bay.

Thanks!
Absolutely amazing how nice other sailors/boaters are ... thanks for the vid safe travels until the next one 😁
It’s a great community to be a part of.
I like your choice for the dingy. I will take up less room on deck when at sea.
I really enjoy seeing you making upgrades to your boat and kind of MacGyvering things and also explaining what things do what.
Great adventure Sam and Zoey - keep on sailing and having fun! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed Shipwright. That’s where I keep my boat. If you’re ever back there and need anything please reach out!!
You bet!
Annapolis is fantastic! I enjoy watching your videos with quick, do-it yourself, no frills projects. Very helpful and informative. Thanks!
We've been using the MarineWays ap with good luck. Have switched to Navtronics to give it a go.
1:40 - Did I hear Zoe call the pilot "Dad"?... Nice!....

I really like how there are reviews of all the anchorages now.
Gotta love your little Red Achilles, it will do you well... I have one with a wood transom, it's tough as nails!
Nice. Mines been great so far.
Great idea for the tiller extension.

I really like Aqua Maps. Esp. like the up to date Army Core of Engineers depth surveys
I like Navionics but I've also used C-Map and it's very user friendly and has a good UI/UX design.

After days on a boat, first stop ashore....tubing. Dig it.
Got some nice second hand sails from bacon. Now that I've seen your video I want to go down there and check it out.

It would be real cool if you sailed up north into the Narragansett bay towards Newport and Bristol in Rhode Island.

I almost smashed into those poles while transiting the bay at night as well. Came out of nowhere like a forest in the water. So crazy!
For real!
Hey Sam!
Good score on the dinghy
I just boat a sailboat, realizing everything added boat or marine grade in their name cost four times more expensive. I love your diy projects.
Awesome as always and i would be a kid in a candy store in that place lol

Plumbing PVC will get brittle in the sun very quick. Furniture grade is tougher and last longer.
Sorry, but that’s not the case. PVC pipe last years in the southern sun. 😀

Yup
Posts not marked in a chart? Unheard of, sounds like a vector chart zoom problem.
Navionics is my favorite too. To me it’s better than aquamaps
Navionics is by far the best app for navigation
I would say hello, but we Mids are locked away inside USNA. Fair winds!
Sam is the tri reefing clutch you installed on your boom facing the wrong way by 180 degrees?
Nope it’s installed correct
