Hey Sam, A 1-2 lb lead sinker or window sash cord weight works well and 50ft ft of 1/4” braid or 3 strand works well with knots 3 ft or every fathom. I was lucky enough years ago to pick up a couple of lead depth finding weights with concave hollows in the bottom at Bacon Sails resale shop in Annapolis . Originally they used to put grease in them to test the bottom whether sand, mud, coral or rock whether clinging to it or not. Now some recommend peanut butter in the hollow to test. Fair winds from Virginia Beach.
