I write operas and a few weeks ago I thought ‘I wonder if anybody has turned Shelley’s Prometheus into an opera?’ I looked it up, and found this. I have listened to nothing else since. Absolutely astounding. I’m not sad that I now will not turn this great work of literature into an opera because I got to discover this! Thank you so much for uploading it.
Back in the 70s when I first discovered this piece, and read that it marked the start of the "English Musical Renaissance" in 1880, I thought there would never be chance of hearing it. Let alone in a convincing professional performance alongside a full score. And I think that assessment was right - this really was something new compared with what had gone before. Yes, the Brahms and Wagner is unavoidable, but so is Parry's own unique voice. Thank you for spending time uploading this.
London Mozart Players and Crouch End Festival chorus conducted by William Vann. Soloist: Sarah Fox, Dame Sarah Connolly, David Butt Philip, Neal Davis.
