We tried bitless, bareback, no jumping but he still acted like this, like many young horses do at a certain stage in their education. These clips only show about 1/10th of what we went through with months of dangerous and reckless behaviour from his side, but I knew he was a great pony, and I refused to give up on him. -
"I got Mac as a very green 5yo. He was broke and ridden for 6 months and had previously been abused. He was scared of people, being touched, and super nervous under saddle. He was extremely herd bound and would rear a ton whenever he had to go away from the other horses, but also out of exitement when jumping or when he didn't want to work.

Nobody else seems to be saying it, so I will. You're one hell of a rider to sit those rears and bucks. You give with your hands as soon as he's thinking of going up, and you don't yank when he's coming down. I agree that maybe jumping isn't the best thing for a horse with behavioral issues, but I also don't know you or your horse, and you have a trainer working with you who can judge what is best more than anyone on the internet can. Good for you for sticking with him.

Mac reminds me of the 5 year old OTTB I ride. When I first started riding him, he would buck every time we would transition up or down and now we are competing in .9 jumper classes, and I couldn't be prouder. Thank you Therese for not giving up on your horses. ❤️

I'm so angry with your instructor. Obviously you are an incredible rider but your horse needs lots of flat work in flexing and confidence. I don't care if this was just a naughty day, jumping should be stop and circles in walk, trot, extented trot, canter and transitions should be immediately started. These exercises when well mastered then can resume to pole and gymnastics execrises. After many sessions of thoses of his willness on loose rein may you slowly intoduce jumping. i hope u are still riding and learning to be a great horsewomen by learning patience with this horse even if you are competing with another
She's a FANTASIC rider!! Bet you wouldn't have been able to move as one with that horse to keep from getting bucked constantly! You sound like the type that would've GIVEN UP on a previously mistreated animal and take the easy route!! Working with Disturbed animalswith disturbing pasts is completely different than working with animals that have had good lives from the beginning. The training is quite different than your personal philosophy on training... Or should I say your trainers personal philosophy on training?! this was nothing but hateration on someone who's probably a better writer than you will ever be. a better person for not giving up on a pony because we both know what happens to them when they're giving up on don't we? so maybe you should climb down off your high horse, hun completely intended, and give props and support where it's deserved instead of beingoverly critical about something you know nothing about which is dealing with a horse that's been through issues. Every trainer has their different style and school of thought by the way...you obviously are not a critical thinker or you would have studied all these other schools of thought before rattling off the one that you are programmed by

Don't understand why you jumped with him. If he had such a bad experience with humans ect. why don't you improve your trust to each other before starting riding, especially jumping?

Anna Rigsby No Anna. You do not start jumping at all, until the horse is confident in at least the basic cues. This horse was no where near ready to start jumping. Too much pressure, hence what looked like months of rearing, baulking and bucking.
Listen Up look you don't know this horse, maybe he goes forward when she jumps so that may have helped him. it obviously did cuz he's fixed now!! its whatever the horse does better with, when a horse rears they need to go forward

That is the very reason i mentioned he was not ready to jump.
He needed to begin re-education from the ground up.
Lastly, this issue of rearing went on for months.
That tells me what the rider was doing was too much at this stage for THIS particular horse.
Unless there was a pain issue not being addressed.

Mayne instead of hating, you could all tell what you think is wrong and give constructive feedback and not make yourselves look better! I guarantee you she didn't upload this to have people comment about things that happened forever ago, but to show how proud she was to accomplish this! And yes, her riding isn't perfect, but no one is this world rides perfectly every single day! I admire her for keep going, I could've never kept riding a horse like that, I would've been knocked down immediately and been frightened to ever go close again! Therese have done some amazing work with this horse, if you just watch till the end of the video you'd know!

I have a horse like this, too. He was originally meant to be a pony for kids, but than go wild. I had seen his many talents and the causes because of which he was going wild, so I decided to buy him. People called me crazy, because he was not that afraid, but attacking humans, if he just get the chance and tried hard to get me of his back frequently. He was checked by a vet and everything, so I know he just was acting like this, because of the treatment he had get before I bought him. It is a hard and long way, with such horses and you never know, if they got as great, as you think or end up completely unrideable. People tend to forget the hard work and just see the failures you make, what makes it even harder. After one and a half year of working up the basics with my horse I changed the stable and now a lot of people are saying thinks like: "He is such a good boy!" "He is so talented!" "I can't believe, he would do ever something evil to you!" "He looks so happy!". The fact is, that he is not cured or something. Whenever something reminds him back, he will attack me or other people again, but he gets more and more patient with everything and that was my only goal from the beginning: a good and happy horse. So please keep on going with your work! Even if its hard.
If you know he isn't the most comfortable with humans and being under saddle, why wouldn't you slow things down and try ground work?

Thankyou for being a big inspiration. These videos are the only motivation for me these days. I have a TB gelding, not as this on though, but extremely nervous, bolt and rear happy. And I have been told by those who were supposed to motivate and support me, that he's crazy, there's no fix..and he'll kill me. But I'm not giving up on him. Started groundwork and he's doing super so far, he really wants to learn.

Excuses, excuses. I seriously hope you can take these comments as constructive criticism rather than "poor me getting picked on." This horse is giving you EVERY sign that there is way too much pressure on his bit, when he starts rearing you even dig your heels in! I don't care if this horse was seconds away from death, or whatever his past is, *it is not the horse, it is your riding.* I guarantee you've had several horses do this to you. Come on, anyone can see where the problem comes from. This poor horse and whatever others you've no doubt ruined.
Bella K. If you took the time to read the description you would see that she tried bit less and he just kept rearing and being crazy and it didn't work. She had to keep a tight rein or he would bolt and hurt himself. Some people actually care for their horses

Showjumping 09 brideless doesn't mean taht ther is no pressure. It's only on a different part of the face. And maybe it does not work with brideless, maybe with a bit was better, but that doesn't change the fact, that she uses her reins too much. Even in the end of the video

This is AMAZING your seat is goals and this just shows all the hard work you have done and home much courage and confidence you have in your horse.
I think you did really when in most of these situations, i just really notice than whenever he rears it's after you pull on the reins or have them too short, maybe he's not a fan of that, lot's of horses find it easier to relax on a slightly longer reign

Ok so she's not perfect but let's remember here that she was a novice and had only been riding 3 years by this point. I'd say she's handling it pretty darn well. And let be honest here we have all accidently yanked on the reins, it's part of learning. You'd be lying if you told me you've never done that
+Laura BLair maybe one or twice but where i ride we always learn with longer reins to minimize that. Horses dont respond well to tightness in any part of you, whether it is your reigns or your seat which is really tight. But as i said, i think she handled most of the situations really well, it's just when a horse cant communicate what is wrong to us we have to make 100% sure that we arent the causes of the problem. 90% it will be us doing something which causes the horse to behave the wrong way, which ofc we all do all the time it is just important to notice it

Your horse was telling you that you were putting too much pressure on him - Irrelevant what his past experiences were or why.
You needed to go back to basics and start from scratch.
Yes he jumped in the end (after months it seems) but that is not the point.
Too much too fast is never the right way.
If your horse is rearing and bucking consistantly like that, you need to re-evaluate what you are doing.
Next time listen to you horse and always deal with the basics first... Forward stop left right.
Dont ask for more until these are consistent.

Listen Up agreed. Though the problem wasn't constant bit pressure it was the lack of respect your horse had for you. My horse was just like this but very headshy had barely been broke till she was like 7. I slept with her in the barn many nights and spent much of my time with her. But I also taught her respect and trust. It took about a couple years but I ended up with an amazing soulmate that I can ride bareback and with a simple halter on anywhere. Take time and it will show.

i know, i got confused and posted this as a reply instead of a comment my bad;).
I agree with you. First off take the bit and all this other junk to keep his head down. It's the rider's fault that his head keeps going up. Pulling back on the reins while asking to go forward would confuse and frustrate any horse. Go back to basics and build up trust and respect. You should never have to bit your horse or use whips and spurs. People think they have more control with bits, but you don't. It puts so much pain on the tongue and it pulls the tongue back into their throats, the gums and the teeth. I've seen riders who nearly cut their horse's tongues off because of bits. I went bit-less and started riding in a rope halter with my old horse. She was easier to handle and ride without a bit. I believe in using as little equipment as possible with horses. You get better results when it's done that way.
Although i applaud this rider for her determination 'Listen up' has every right to say what she did, because its true and is correct from a professionals perspective, its very good advise! The pony is working totally hollow so needs taking back to basics to teach him to work relaxed and over his back before contemplating any pole work. This pony needs a more sympathetic instructor, not one that throws sand at it to chase it forward because its frightened of the pain it endures jumping hollow! No pony is born bad, man makes them bad!
I bought a green-broke Mo. Foxtrot term when I was 16. He was scared of everything and reared constantly, not out of meanest but fear. We became best friends and he became the best trail horse you would ever want! RIP Sam.

mmmm. No. I've learned to do my ground work. If youll notice that there are not any recent videos of me riding. Except for the Wrangler Application Video I posted last year. That doesn/t count as I wasnt training those horses. None of them were mine. Plus there were 80+ horses on the ranch and several different people with several different training styles. So I can say I have definitely learned to do my ground work even if I wasn't keen on it in my younger years.

No offense but if you can't control your horse on the flat then why are you jumping it?
You are a patient, kind rider and your perseverance paid off, many riders will give up on a difficult horse. Mostly when horses play up they are doing it for a reason, sore mouth, other injury, badly broken in or fear and occasionally but rarely it's just plain cocky and disrespectful. We've had mares that consistently produced difficult offspring, they were tough to work with as foals to handle and to break and ride. One filly would set her ears flat back, spin around and double barrel anyone who went past her stable, she had never been ill treated. It takes a true horseman/ women to recognise the issue and deal with it in the correct manner. Ignore all the ignorant and insulting comments from know it alls because you have succeeded and have a happy horse now!

He is clearly rearing as a reaction of you pulling the reins backward. why are you even jumping this horse?
The pony was abused before she got him and the rearing was something he just did. In the description you will read info about things she has tried. Some horses need something to focus on tohelp like poles and jumping. I think she used it as a tactic to try and get him to focus, that's all. She isn't pulling hard considering she is riding in a D ring snaffle with a very weak action, she has tried bitless so its not even mouth pressure doing anything.
BlackMountain150 No you do not jump any horse, until the horse is confident in the basics. This was done the wrong way round. It was too much pressure all at once for that horse. Hence the constant rearing. Not the correct way to fix the issue. Irrelevant of the outcome.
Listen Up How is the outcome irrelevant? The pony came out fab and a real star of a pony. Every pony is different he obviously came out on the good side. Besides the fact just because a method is different doesn't mean it wont work, everything is learned by trial and error. Sometimes if a horse has something to focus on then they are able to work through their insecurities be it on the flat, hacking or jumping.
+BlackMountain150 The outcome is irrelevant because she risked herself, and her horse doing something that they were not ready for, and caused her horse months of unnecessary stress. If she had gone back to basic ground work this behaviour largely could have been avoided. Or corrected in a better way. The horse was pushed to jump and wear draw reins etc... when forward at walk was not even confirmed yet.
Rushing things is never ideal if the animal shows signs of not coping like this.
I would have started with work in hand with this fellow.

Btw... Just because something ends ok does not mean there can't be a better and faster way.

+Springers 'n' Horses what does it matter if they are a western rider, literally the only thing that is different between western and English riding is the saddle and events they participate in. I personally ride both styles and have no preference, you do not have the right to stereotype someone on what fucking saddle they use...

All these people who are hating,what would you do in the situation you would probably give up on the horse and Sell it the fact that she kept trying and didn't give up on the horse shows true belief and love and compassion. If you read the description you would notice that this horse and been abused in the past and obviously if a horse had been abused it will act out when it tries something, it will be sensitive but if you had been abused, and your tonne friend tried to make that better you would be unsure of it just as much as that horse was, there is no need for hate and she doesn't have pressure on the mouth when the horse was rearing the rider wrapped her arms around the horses neck so he reaslises she isn't going to give up or hurt him on purpose.

Someone wise once told me that every time you get on a horse you are either training him or untraining him.
If you can take a moment, decide if you really want to put in the work to move forward, then you will never regret
going back to basics: work him from the ground, Ask advice of someone you respect; ask them to teach you the effective
way to train a horse on a lunge line with poles placed on the ground to help him teach himself balance and rhythm.
There is too much going on right now. Give yourself a break. I promise you after a couple of weeks of ground work
with poles you'll have a calmer more trusting horse & you'll be able to trust him as well. You'll find out on your own that you
don't need martingales or running reins to. I wish you all the luck in the world and all the fun that comes from learning

Props to you this horse seemed impossible but you made her talent come through. You knew she had it and you let show. Truly amazing riding.
Maybe you should try to not jump for a while and it might help your horse relax a little🙂

try a harder or softer bit maybe its that? i read the description relax. try a straight rubber one. my horse freaked the fuck out when i tried different bits and then i tried a straight rubber one and he was fine. much more relaxed. just a suggestion.

I wanted to cry when I watched this because of the infinite patience you had with him and the horse you could see within. He is a very blessed pony indeed to have ended up in your hands. What an awesome rider, too, thankfully. This was a joy to watch, though I was on the edge of my seat. :)

I think you ride really really well! But maybe you should use a little less of hand and less bit pressure. I think it migt help if you do a little dressage training before you jump. You can do neck stretching exercises with the horse for 10 minutes amd then start to jump. I did that with my horse and it really helped a lot☺

Well done to you. Many riders would have given up and sold him on. The bond you have created will be lasting. We went through a similar journey with one of our horses. He's now the kindest and most secure horse to ride.

+Laura Tapp - It doesn't matter how bad your horse is or was nor whether he was abused or not. Pulling on the bit like you are doing is going to amplify every negative response you get. If you can't tell that you are adding too much bit pressure, it's time to get a side pull.

Just read the description and watched the video to the end. Well done all concerned! So many people would have given up on that pony and left it to be passed from pillar to post and, quite likely, drugged in order to sell. You have a solid friend for life there, and you certainly deserve one. But please don't ever sell him on because chances are all those problems will return with a different owner. His confidence and trust comes from you, his mum. x

Guys, if you would read the description you would have noticed she tried bitless and it didn't work. It's not the 'bit pressure'. some horses need extra contact. There's a gun of a pony that I ride at my riding school and whenever I'm jumping him he literally tries to gallop towards the jump.. No kidding, so I need to hold my contact quite short. Same with another horse I ride (Tank)💚
My_Bay_Jed When horses rush at a jump it means they are either poorly trained, or poorly ridden or scared.
It is never a sign of something good.
A well trained confident horse trusts its rider and will steady when asked.
There are loads of videos of how to fix or improve this problem. Perhaps watch some. Good luck.
+Listen Up those horses are not poorly trained nor scared. Roger is an Arab to start with, and he was abused in the past, he's a very forward horse anyway, especially in paddocks which is where we jump, since the beginners are in the arena. And Tank use to be used for endurance, so she's been taught to go fast. Everyone just laughs it off at my riding school since they know the horses are always like that.

My_Bay_Jed I’ve been around Arabians my whole life and have owned my first one for 13 years, and it’s a big pet peeve of mine when people say “oh he/she is an Arab” as an excuse for something. The majority of the ones I’ve worked with are very willing to learn, and even if some do have a lot of energy there’s no reason they can’t be taught to contain it. In my experience, the breeds more commonly found in jumping like warmbloods and TBs can actually be WAY more explosive and high-energy than Arabs are.
You are amazing! Loads of people would have tried to sell that horse after a month, or even put it down! You're such an inspiration, and you show that if you put your heart into something, never give up and just keep trying it will turn out good. ❤️👏

This video does not deserve hate comments. First of all your an amazing rider for sitting all of these reads and bucks. Obviously yes, sometimes your reins are too short and whatnot but your obviously doing your best and no ones perfect. It’s hard to know what to do in the exact moment of a buck and you rode them all very well. ;)
Wow nice job hun. I know I'm a bit late 😜 But for the sake of anyone in the future reading this: she did a very nice job learning to grab the neck when rearing, so good to see! And this is a perfectly fine horse and rider. The only thing they need to be wary of is to not teach the horse to rear in the future. You know, like those liberty insta girls 😒😛
hey this isnt hate, i beleive she did an AMAZING job with this horse!!(unlike all the haters) and i LOVEEE her videos, but somebody said that grabbing on to the neck when the horse rears is actually a bad habit and it teaches the horse to rear, is this true?i dont think though😃 have a nice night😊or day whenever you read this😂😊
+BLUE paws I guess for some horses that pressure might still encourage the rear, but it's better than holding onto the reins because then the horse will continue to rear until the rider falls off or the horse goes over backwards. Either of these would be a release of pressure and the horse would see it as a positive effect of rearing. I think ideally the rider should grab the mane, but the neck is still so much better than the bit. And it just so happens to be exactly midnight! Off to bed I go... 😉

The problem is your rains he doesn't like how tight they are and every time you pulled on him he reared I used to do that and my horse kept rearing but I loosened them and he worked amazingly did you know it's always the riders fault it's true

Maybe she should be working on getting him to bring his head down and to relax. There could be a very good reason why he's behaving this way, out in the poll, some form of discomfort. The running reins, and check, that are being used seem like a bit of a bandaid to me. He could seriously hurt his rider, and himself by continuing this behaviour. Well done to the rider for sticking it out, but maybe look for a cause and solution

If you really did have a heart for your poor horses you would be able to understand that you've ripped the horse's mouth everytime you rode him with putting that much pressure with your bit and pulling on those reins. sorry in the after vids your still hauling on your horses mouth, u gob it pretty much after every jump, sitting in chair seat heavy on the loins and its hollow in the back with the biggest ewe neck I ever saw..go check out enlightened equitation videos or something and learn to ride with your horse not against it he/she will thank you for it. the only positive of your vids I can say is your brave

In my experience, the more you try to hold a horse back, the more they act out. If it were me, I'd trash the flash, martingales, and other restrictive devices and teach him to obey through trust and partnership rather than through force. The more comfortable he is, the less likely he is to try to escape from the situation.
