  • Finally we've driven the new £182,500 McLaren Artura, the car that replaces the 570S and is the first series production McLaren road car to feature a hybrid powertrain. But is it match for today's latest crop of pure internal combustion engined supercars such as Maserati's magnificent MC20 and Ferrari's own take on the six-cylinder, hybrid supercar, the sensational 296 GTB?
We sent Jethro Bovingdon to drive McLaren's new 671bhp hybrid supercar on road and track to find out.

From an engineering point of view these cars look like masterpieces, but if I had the money I just cant imagine myself buying one of these over something like a 430 scuderia or a huracan, something with a proper N/A engine and good sound. I feel like the best era for supercars is already behind us.

I'm a fan of this new breed of V6 PHEV supercars, particularly the 120 degree motors (cool!), it helps that the execution of the 296 and this seem pretty strong (typical McLaren niggles aside...), even the NSX grew into being quite awesome. A few hundred pounds of batteries and motors is a bit of a downer but the efficiency and performance you get with that weight, combined with how good suspension and tire technology is these days, adds up to some pretty awesome packages.

Great filming and visual editing, but the audio editing needs a bit more work. Sometimes it's out of sync and overall the onboard recordings are a lot quieter, than the post production commentary. And it's great to see Jethro back here on EVO.
And about the performance and excitement: I bet in a few years we'll see an Artura LT or something and a 720S replacement as well. After all this is just the new "entry level" McLaren, so it looks like they didn't want to make it better than their current top level car.

believe me, and Jethro, pedal box is the best in the world. When McLaren Automotive started with a clean sheet, a carbon tub and a DCT they only ever needed 2 pedals so the car was designed around that... no 2 pedals on the right and a bloody great big empty space on the left like a GT3RS PDK !! Porsche and Ferrari come from a DNA of 3 pedals and Porsche still with option 2 or 3, McLaren came in when it was always going forward meant to be 2 pedals from the ground up.

Dynamic toe is a geometry trait, and therefore is affected by suspension travel, toe stiffness refers to compliance (such as bushings or minute deflections in long thin aluminum arms) and is affected by loading. Geometry does have and affect though as the further the toe link is from center the greater the pivot force under side load is, but by nature it has to be at least somewhat off center, then consider packaging and geometry constraints....

Exactly. This must harm their sales too, it may be a better car now, but it loos the same, so it doesn't seem distinctive or memorable. I this idea of a corporate design language has been taken too far. Ferrari have a better balance.

IMO the laziest design team at present is Mercedes. I have to look twice to split the current C, E and S-Class from the rear with the tail-light design they copied from the Alfa Romeo Giulia! And putting the generic front and rear on the new SL is just more of the German sausage syndrome!

As a former fanboy - I find comparison of supercars somewhat pointless. It makes sense for family cars or utility vehicles but when you buy a super car/sports car, you are buying into the brand and its specific niches and characteristics. I think one can appreciate the engineering and thought put into either car and I guess preference on which car you'd choose over the other will boil down to not the numbers or spec sheet, rather which car you just fancy for the sake of it.
