    Sam - the one thing that's not discussed as often as it should is: how much of a loss it would be for the world of motoring were mclaren to go out of business.
    this is a small, independent manufacturer of carbon-tubbed, dihedral-doored, mid-engined supercars with hydraulic steering, that makes cars that can be purchased by anyone with the requisite cash - unlike the elitists at ferrari, who by the way use aluminum frames and electric steering.
    supporting mclaren is akin to being a fan of a smaller indie band and not, say, u2. both are sorely needed! excellent review.

      They should make an SUV like Porsche did then pour their profit back into their supercars.

      Fun review but why isn't it mentioned its the exact same electric motor as in Ferrari 296?

  • @pklimbic

    All these cars should have a “5 minutes to home” button where they just recharge their batteries. it’ hassle free and it would always allow you to leave home on a full charge.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Problem is that current PHEVs tend to do exactly the opposite: all my PHEVs, when driving with navigation on, use the hybrid system in a way that my battery is empty when I arrive at he destination. The idea is that they assume that anywhere you're going there's a charger (especially at home), and it's best to maximise your electricity use and minimise combustion engine use. That's why when I did a round trip somewhere I always had to program the navigation with the full round trip meaning I punch in both the destination and the trip back home. I had to learn how to program multi-leg journeys into the nav.

    • @pklimbic
      @pklimbic ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@pistonburner6448 exactly. That’s why we really need a button like that. You press it, it overrides everything, and you’re sure that when you arrive, the batteries will be full.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@pklimbic Yup, or more (physical knob!) controls to tell the system what you want it to do! A knob each to adjust:
      -How much you want the hybrid system to give a boost during spirited driving.
      -A separate knob to select how much electric motor use you want the computer to work in when cruising normally (to adjust the rate at which the charge drops overall during a journey, instead of having to use the nav to let the car control it).
      -Rate of recuperation. This is so we can fill up the battery when we want, at the rate we need. It's so much less efficient to "emergency-fill" the battery very quickly using the engine and more efficient to slowly fill it up with recuperation alone, so it makes sense to be able to choose the rate according to your situation.
      -A separate engine preparation button to tell it to start up and begin heating up the engine.
      -A separate button to use the engine to heat up the car and battery (they really should be able to use the engine heat to keep the battery up to temp, not waste electricity for that), with minimal consumption. This is so that in cold weather you can avoid using up all of your battery to heat up the cabin with the very inefficient electric heater. Just maximise the whole warmup using the more efficient combustion heat.
      Actually I'd suggest a that if the button isn't clicked off the computer would keep using the engine heat optimally to keep the car heated up, starting it up periodically when necessary even when in electric mode. Electric heating just drains the battery.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@pklimbic Actually come to think of it one of my previous PHEVs had a "hold charge" function which ensured that it kept the battery at its current level. I don't remember if it was the BMW or Mercedes. I'm pretty sure it was the Mercedes.

    It's kind of mind-blowing that an entry-level McLaren that everyone calls the baby McLaren still costs almost 300K euros. That was big boy supercar money not that while ago. Even the new Aventador is a half-a-million euro car. Crazy where prices have gone. Good car the Artura is tough.

    All you need is a button as found in BMW hybrids that maintains/recharges your battery to a set level that you decide just incase you need electric ⚡ for the last leg of your journey into a emission free journey. It's thirsty work for the engine, but on a motorway it's easy and not inner city, so better than nout!

    I have mixed feelings about hybrids.
    I daily drive a Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid. It started out having about 15 miles of electric range. Now after several years the most I can get is about 9 miles. (A 40% decrease).
    It is enough I can take my daughter to school and back on pure electric. Which is good to not have to heat cycle the engine.
    But that’s not my main gripe.
    If driving in electric mode and I have to step on it to merge on the highway, the cold engine kicks on and feels gutless until it warms. You can feel the stain on the engine while it’s cold.

    Sam You are forgetting about the NSX hybrid that You tested as well. And to be Honest that would be my pick for a Hybrid Super Sport car. More reliable then the McLaren and half the price is not more then the 296 with 90% of the performance. Plus it has all weather four wheel drive that the McLaren and 296 don't have. Shmee has been documenting his experiences with his SF90 (similar hybrid setup to 296). He has to put it all the way up into qualify mode to make it charge the batteries if he wants EV range for later, otherwise the Ferraris also will completely deplete the battery in normal driving. I’m a bit confused. I run a PHEV (sadly not an Artura) - when the battery is depleted it swaps to being a standard hybrid, ie the engine kicks in To power the car. You absolutely shouldn’t have to change modes for that to happen. Also why are you trying to charge the battery when you’re driving? The car will sort itself out and the battery charge should be irrelevant. It’s turned itself into a series/parallel hybrid like a Prius then. Then when you get home you plug it in get a full battery for your 16 mile commute to work (?!). If you want performance then you put it in sport and the car will charge the battery when you’re decelerating vigorously into a corner presumably?

    what is a "cold start procedure"? An ICE engine should, under normal circumstances, receive a load immediately (load not high revs) in order to warm up quickly which is why it is also always recommended to drive off straight a way from cold with any ice powered car. @pistonburner6448 ปีที่แล้ว

      No damage, the systems don't actually let the battery ever drain. When a hybrid slows down it's because the computer is doing it. There's always plenty of buffer.

      @alunjones2550 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pistonburner6448 I realise that but, constant amounts of excessive drain before the engine kicks in will degrade that batteries at a higher rate, and reduce their life, hence why I said "damage". I know that completely draining lithium batteries kills them and you always have a buffer. I still think they haven't properly resolved the link between battery and ICE.

      @@alunjones2550 There is no more drain, no higher drain rate than in any other situation or on any other hybrid.
      Maybe it could warn inattentive drivers beforehand, but I don't see this configuration to be bad. It just gives the driver the options to do what he wants without the computer automatically intervening. People who know how the system works will know how to use it and not be surprised by that situation.

    The reliability issues as reported by TH-camrs is a small subset of the population. My 2019 600LT has been trouble free for years and that aligns with the experiences of many other owners I’ve met. Can’t blame the Arturo for operator error.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that from what I've read the main problem seems to be largely (some) dealers and maybe also previously the sign-off process at the factory. All cars have some reliability issues, and it's hard to say how many McLaren has percentage-wise, if they have any more than others. Reading many anecdotal reports from owners does not provide reliable data of how many issues they have overall or compared to other brands.
      But what seems to be common in many of these things is dealers keeping on messing up horribly with cars delivered with faults/blemishes, then when there is a small repair done they miss another issue or cause another, and it's a cycle of constant muck-ups by them! Missed software updates, cars sitting for weeks without anything being done, then delivered with blaring faults not noticed. It doesn't seem like the cars themselves have huge faults or that horribly many of them either, it's the dealers.

    Nice to hear you giving such great appraisal of this McLaren considering your comparison with the 296 GTB on a previous podcast. I also believe that McLaren are giving a FIVE YEAR warranty on this vehicle which if true is also gives confidence on this car ….. come on it’s fantastic …. What would make it perfect for me is that it’s a pity in its design it does not have rear access like the 570GT then perfection ?

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, after that 5 year warranty (and any additional warranty the battery and hybrid system has) is up unless you can get extended warranties later on: the values will absolutely crash! If you think maintenance on a supercar is bad, then imagine an old hybrid supercar!
      I've had things break in my EVs and PHEVs and they've all been massively expensive (but I've had warranty cover them, I'd never own one out of warranty). Just one high voltage control module (not even the battery) breaks in a normal BMW PHEV sedan and it costs as much as a full engine swap in many normal cars! And the mechanics said it's not at all unusual for PHEVs to just get a slight spike of excess voltage from some fault in the charger and it instantly breaks the module. And no-one repairs those modules, so you have to swap out the whole expensive box.
      Of course supercars are not everyday cars and the price equations are very different: if due to this you can later on get these hybrid supercars super cheaply then it might actually be good for some people. If you know a guy who can repair those systems cheaply then you get a normally massively expensive supercar with a massive discount, and that discount might cover any expensive repairs you have to do, balancing things out.

      Yeh really doubt the next GT will follow this design because of the chimney. I heard McLaren have invested heavily in their monocell development, so I'm really hoping now the GT cars (GT and Speedtails) will have their own unique monocell designed specifically to accomadate those cars, maybe we could even see a return of the front mid engine like the SLR!
