Ahhhh my favorite Opeth song, I still find myself singing “please remedy my confusion” around the house. Bass is surprisingly groovy and the main guitar Melody’s use of half steps is intoxicating. This is Opeths Ministry of lost souls in my opinion. Sprinkle in some crunchy chords and some Gnarly Growls you have a masterpiece to me. Killer tune

So, it's like 2003. I never heard of Opeth. I went to the last CD store in existence and went through the metal selection. I picked up Blackwater Park on a whim, asked the guy at the counter about it. He told me and I'll never forget this, " it's supposed to be like Alice in Chains with death growls." I figure what the hell and bought it. Took it home and put it in to listen to while I did some around the house type stuff. I wasn't paying too much attention to it but liking it until I hit Harvest. That grabbed my attention, sat down to listen to it more carefully. Then Drapery Falls came on and I was pretty much a fan instantly. It is still my favorite song by them.with Ghost of Perdition as a close second. Drapery Falls is peak Opeth.

Haha same. Opeth is so great that they were the full stop of my metal journey. I tried many other bands after them but I couldn't find any that scratch that specific itch so well. For discovering new music I just turned my compass to other genres, Opeth killed metal for me.

I know I'm a year late, but I was in the same boat so I resonate with what you noted here. If you don't like the growls, look at the newer albums of Opeth, they pretty much removed them altogether and only kept the cleans... moving from being progressive death metal to more progressive rock. Some people only like "Oldpeth", others only like "Newpeth"... others like me like both. Something for everyone!

  • @Ursaokkkk

I interpret this song like this: The intro is a representation of a really big emotional pain, and sounds kind of conformity too, like, accepiting the pain. Before that transitionary riff, where comes the acoustic sections and all the rest of the song, is like a context to why this person is feeling all that emotional pain. Near the end, when the intro comes back, being the outro, is like a movie plot twist for me, it feels just like that, now we know why this feeling is inside this person. And i think that this song may represents the feeling of conformity pain, seeking the sadness for fullfill emptyness. The intro sounds dark and sad, but still relaxing and welcoming, and at that little explosion on the acoustic part you get the lyrics: "Take me down again and guide me into pain". Such a beautiful, meaningful, and fantastic song.
Sorry for my bad english ;)

Hi Mike :-) Firstly, thank you very much for these series. I have been listening to Opeth since 2009 and this is my favourite Opeth song (it´s emotional and atmospheric masterpiece). My favourite Opeth albums are Blackwater Park (my fav album ever), Still Life, Watershed (really underrated album), Ghost Reveries and Damnation (I also really enjoy In Cauda Venenum from newer ones and don´t care too much for first two albums and Sorceress). For me, albums from Still Life to Watershed are all 9 out of 10 at least. That´s why Opeth is my favourite band for more than thirteen years. Their music speaks to human soul with every possible emotion from melancholy, darkness but also beauty.

This has always been the number one Opeth song for me. So glad to hear this analysis. Finally.
That Ktulu reference @ 6:34 was great. I understand now why I like that section. So my mind was already receptive to it by listening to Ktulu and the Megadeth variations. Thanks for making me psyho-acoustically aware.

Love Opeth. I'll be honest I was put off by the demon vocals for a long time. But the brilliance and uniqueness of their music drew me back in. Now some of my favorites are filled with those vocals like Deliverance and the Grand Conjuration. I'd be lying if I said I understood half of musical breakdowns but its still cool to hear and maybe I'll pick up on some of it through osmosis. Keep up the pretentiousness somehow it works for you. I wonder what your 5 least favorites are?

    • @BecomeTheKnight
      @BecomeTheKnight  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Lol. I'm very confident in certain opinions of mine. People like to interpret that as pretentious. I'm sick of being told lies, I'm sick of keeping my honest thoughts to myself, and I'm confident enough to stand behind and back up my points of view. If someone thinks that makes me pretentious then I don't put much faith in their judgement.

@@BecomeTheKnight Right on man. Wrong choice of words on my part. One of my favorite artists is Steven Wilson and he gets that label of pretentious all the time. Even though he is extremely knowledgeable. People tend not to understand everything he says and mistake him for pretentious. Thats all I mean by it. I should have put it in quotes or something because are not by definition "pretentious".

blackwater park was always my number 3 fav from opeth (after damnation and ghost reveries), i just never really got the hype. recently i decided to do a deep dive into this album to see if i could at least understand all the praise. and after lisenting to it a few more times and really thinking about each song i can say that i have found a whole new appreciation for the album. the production and the song writing easilly justify it being number 1 for so many poeple.

Love Opeth, saw then in early 2020 before the pandemic started terrorizing lives and saw them in 2021 with Mastodon with a new drummer since Axe the blonde guy just left Opeth out of no where. Who cares though I mean it's not like he brought any new shit to the table. A guy like Martìn Lopez actually brought cool shit to the table like a true Latin groove but too each their own. Axe is a good metal drummer but my point is he's replaceable in my humble opinion. Martin was not.
They are great too bad I didn't catch them in their prime though when they were doing mostly growl songs. The best concert to see would have been the Prog Nations tour with Dream Theater and Opeth in 2008. I would have been just 7 years old though lol. I'm not big on opeths new prog-rock direction but Mike's voice sounds great. My fav Opeth sound would have to be like the well structured Harlequin Forrest (so good live), Ghost of perdition, In my time of need, moonlapse vertigo etc. Have a good day guys. Great video!

Easily my favorite Opeth song. Oh, and what you call the cathartic moment I've always viewed it as the start of the supreme tense crescendo that releases into the solo guitar near the end.
I just wish they rerecorded the snare drums for this song. After all these years I just find it so distracting how it's sonically all over the place.

Nice breakdown of the song, can't believe you skipped my fav part tho. I know it's p much the same as what you covered at 17:23 but the drum groove switch at 7:20 in the song is what really sells it for me. Goes to show just how much there is going on this song and how different aspects will resonate differently with different people I guess.
