Over 20 years ago there was an old Greek fellow at Flinders pier who caught more squid than anyone else. He used a handline ring caster with squid jigs and taught me the best tide time, water conditions, and how to use a handline and squid jig. He always used the largest jigs because they were easier to cast, and he always said they were "The Best Jigs". We fished together and whenever 1 of us had a squid on the line the other would cast to where it came from. Sometimes we would get several from the same location.

Thats awesome, the local jetty fishos certainly have a mountain of knowledge around here.

@@nevsguidetofishing3398 His technique was to wind in 2 or 3 times and then pause. The other technique was to walk along the pier slowly swinging your arm back and forth.

Spot on mate no need to keep a heap I think getting your bag is fine but you see a lot of people back out there the next day getting another bag not needed

The best colour can change every year, used to smash the squid on a mullet colour in ppb and after 2 years no longer caught them on that colour, depends on the bait in the area I suppose

KMart sell a Jarvis Walker plastic box of 10 squid jigs, a range of colours and sizes including 5 razorbacks, for $16. They also sell 3.0 razorbacks in packs of 3 for $6. Would be interesting to compare.

Caught 2 good squid last week, in westernport on KMart lures.
A bit to do with how you work the lure.

Thanks for another great video! Could you make one explaining how you set up the two rods? Terminal line, how you attach that to the braid you have in the reel...

Hello nev, i have been watching your videos for a while now and the squid fishing season is almost here so i bought a yo zuri red head to try and see the result. I agree with you kalamari will eat every colors they canwhat i have noticed from last year first time squid fishing (the period here is long for 2 to 3 months max in winter) is that the most important is the water colum you work your jig. sometimes they eat in the bottom so they need fats sinking jigs sometimes they prefer mid colum and they like slow diving jigs sometime when the water is merky they prefer the surface.

How do you go about using a float? Do you just have your braid to a swivel then the float on the leader side of things?

Thanks Nev -- it's another great video. I see that different colours weren't significant results-wise on that particular day.
Would you have expected a different outcome in bright sunshine?
You briefly mentioned jig weight, but can you perhaps go into some more detail about weight/size in a subsequent video.

Hey Nev just wondering about the float rig how do you stop the float and adjust it for the depth your in but still be able to cast it with the float on the end?

  • @LeonAust

Yamashita have a wide range of tactics to go with their colours and backing foil colours technology, backing foils of gold and silver for day, backing foils of red pink purple for morning and arvo then there is the UV Keimura glow for clear days and (Neon UV colours of Blue = Day, Green = Muddy cloudy, Red = Morn and Arvo).
And the night jigs should be using a 490 glow paint that basically can go with a myriad of colours.
