this series is so damn good. it's really inspired me to experiment far more with my bedroom studio drum recording. thanks noam and jessica and the whole production team!
thank you for doing this episode, deftones are such an important and legendary band for me and abes drumming is practically welded into my brain after listening to their albums so many times. its so great to see it broken down like this
That sounds so great! Then, when the bass comes in , it just blows it over the top! Really great sounding mix and fantastic execution of the drum track. Good stuff. Love these bits you guys do. Thanks much. Please keep them coming.
I love these. Sorry for all the shit you get sometimes, even though some results are closer than others I don’t feel that that would be justified in any case. I’ve learned a lot and will put to practice many of these tips. Keep em coming!
These guy PURPOSELY play parts that are similar but NOT the same, so the videos don't get pulled down or demonetized by YT. Explained earlier in the series 👍🏻
Not trying to argue but are you sure that's a Jimmy Chamberlin snare? You sound great btw! You really coined in on Abe's sound and style while still remaining your own as well. Nice work!
@@fartouille I have been trying g to get my hands on another JC snare since my original was stolen. I have an eye for them like a hawk. The inverted bead roll always was a huge visual feature for me.
She laughs when she says the snare name, they may have changed their mind about the snare and made the shots showcasing the drums before recording the final takes... Dunno
About the overhead mics, do you think you could get a similar result by using a pair of....let's say Rode NT1 condenser mics instead (which cost 20x less than the MS47 tube mics)? Also, in general, do you pan the overhead mics 100% L&R or not quite 100% or do you have them panned at different percentages (like one at 100% and the other at 50%, for example)?
You say it's a Jimmy Chamberlin Yamaha snare drum, yet through out the video it's the Chad Smith Pearl snare drum? You got close, a cranked Bell Brass snare would have been closer.
Using a Yamaha steel snare to sound like Abe? No thanks! Where’s that “70s Ludwig” that you always swear by? It would sound just as close! Any 6x14” bell brass snare cranked to breaking point would get you closer!
Sorry but you guys can't get it right because you're too caught on the engineering side of his sound. The mics, the reverb, the kicks etc. are all very well detailed but you don't have the feeling. When you forget the feeling and start dissecting the rest to the smallest detail you become a mathematician instead of a musician. That's why it doesn't sound anything like the original. Abe Cunningham is a groovy and hard hitting drummer. Like all the greats, he has his own signature touch that makes him unique from the rest even when he is playing a simple beat like My Own Summer. Jessica is a great drummer but she plays it like a pop song. That's why it doesn't sound right in my opinion.
One of the most important part in this drum sound is that the hi hat is played near the bell
Went to the comments for this 🙏
First thing I wanted to mention, too 🙂
my own spring

Wow it sounds huge! The snare really stands up, almost like a piccolo.

My Own Summer-ish guitar part.

@@bigkickleoI thought that might have been the case, thanks for confirming.
My Own Autumn
is for the copyrights
I’m getting uncanny valley vibes on this guitar part 🙊🙉🙈
My Bro's Summer
My Old Summer
I was in high school when this album dropped and it was in my 1992 Chevy Lumina (aftermarket of course) CD player constantly.
Never stop doing these!
Such a great series! Thanks so much.
thanks a lot, very informative, and the result sounds great
Could you do fast as you Can by fiona Apple? That’s an amazing drum sound
please do Manipulator drums sound from Ty Segall!! would be cool!!
fuck yesss!
That room mic and overheads sound was awesome in its own right.
Define at that time. It still defines my soul at this time.
Man she has a great groove
"Tama Bell Brass"
Snare Drum 🔔 🥁
I don't know about that. I think it was an OCDP vented snare.
Jessica is extra on top of the original's feel in this one, those ghost snares are perfect.
Amazing video. More coverage on metal
Watching her play drums makes every song better ❤

Seems to be a Pearl Chad Smith actually

that snare definitely says pearl lol
Ha! Good eye, it definitely does.
Beefed it on Soundgarden, but redeemed this week. Well done.
Could you do MGMT's Time to pretend ? Love the overdriven drums !
It's really beneficial to me! Is the drum sound of "Whatcha gonna do for me - AWB" also possible? I'm so curious.
Slowdive's Souvlaki next?
Using a Jimmy Chamberlin Yamaha snare but show a chad smith pearl snare? Speaking of which needs to be tuned a little higher for that deftones sound.
The chamberlain snare has short lugs and die cast hoops. That's true.
She laughs when she says the snare name, they may have changed their mind about the snare and made the shots showcasing the drums before recording the final takes... Dunno
You should do something from the older white stripes albums!
I love how they're promoting this as My Own Summer with straight faces when clearly this isn't My Own Summer
kick sound from admiral angry?

A ridiculous request but would love to see your take on Only Shallow by My Bloody Valentine.

The deftones
I'm glad this is a drum video because those guitar riffs are so wrong haha
Exceptionally pedantic point, but it's not 'The Deftones' it's just 'Deftones'
While your on a terry date kick will you Please please please do 25 years by pantera
No freaking way.

Sounds much better and closer than the really bad Soundgarden one they just did but those toms are social distancing
Using a Yamaha steel snare to sound like Abe? No thanks!

Any 6x14” bell brass snare cranked to breaking point would get you closer!
The Yamaha is Aluminum - the Chad Smith by Pearl is Steel
Hire Terry Date and Ulrich Wild as your producer and engineer. Solved!
FIRST
Your version sounds slightly more real. If you know what I mean. Great though.
Yes but why is the guitar part oh so wrong
I’m pretty sure it’s because they are trying to avoid copyright accusations.
Correct - explained really early on in the series and often during the videos... 🤘🏻@@sovietcomrade4970
Nope
