The song always brings tears to my eyes. It never fails. I always close my eyes and clear my thoughts when I start hearing it. The music takes you on a journey like no other.
What an excellent tune from a truly exceptional show. If you haven't yet, you need to watch the R40 show in its entirety. They start with a huge elaborate stage set up and as they travel backwards through time, the set keeps getting smaller and smaller, until they are down to an amp apiece. A nice tribute to humble beginnings!
Yes, being at a Rush Concert was a quasi religious experience. Seeing this level of music played fully live in front of your eyes...By Three Guys..was hard to comprehend.
Amazing track off an amazing album. I could be wrong but I am led to believe Neil was in a storm and thought, I will just pen some lyrics for another Rush classic. Genius.
@@BrendaNelson-p1yOh heaalll yeah! Entre Nous is my favorite track from the MASTERPIECE that is Permanent Waves. Not a bad song on it, but Rush has a lot of those 😁
Neil said that it was strange to see pictures of himself looking serene on stage when it was like a storm going on inside. The odd time stuff going on after the mid song breakdowni in alternating 6/8 7/8 is the most challenging part to me because of the way Neil places his accents. This is one of their best albums if not the best.
great reaction brother in 2015 i got a lot happening and I just had a thought whats up with rush and it was about a month or so that they were coming to Tampa the most best memory I liked was working man and this Jacobs ladder version I have rarely heard a guitar power sound from any rock band with distortion, this was an Alex own signature model Gibson Les Paul Im sure. they are so great to play hope to own an early model 1960s 0r 70s one day. I plan to do a full rush history for myself as a timeline project yeah keep enjoying rush take care my friend
This was the absolute highlight of the R40 tour. Saw them in Tampa,FL on my birthday by myself because I had to. Look up Amelie Arena in 2015 for the date.
Two of the best memories I have are when I saw Rush perform this in 1980 and then again in 2015. I think Jacob's Ladder got the most applause of any song they did that night in 2015. It was so unexpected and beautiful that my eyes emitted lacrimal fluid.
It's fantastic they played this piece on this tour. It's one of their more abstract constructions, not as "popularly digestible," one might say. They put it out there -- and everyone gets it.
Love this Live! 😞 As sad as things were, 🥹 we were so grateful to have Rush back making Albums & performing again. 🤔 Also 1 of my favorite bass lines. 😉 Still waiting for the fun car chase too. 🏎️🚓🚓 #RedBarchetta 🥰🐰
Great reaction as usual. Don't miss out on the Album track for this one. You get to hear the incredible nuance in Neil's playing and I think the overall experienced is just much better for this song.
And a pleasant Rush-day to you Saeed. Just came back by to say hello, thanks for continuing down the Rush rabbit hole, for my daily dose of dopamine….and PEACE ✌️
Any band would have been thrilled with 1 or 2 megahits on an album, and here comes RUSH with probably 6 megahits on their PERMANENT WAVES album. Incredible!!! ☮
This album, and more specifically Neil's poignant lyrics, really affected young Dave greatly...I remember playing Different Strings (also off Permanent Waves) for my parents and telling them this song spoke to me in a different way than any before it...really a beautiful moment...thanks for another great, thoughtful review!
Great reaction!! I told you.. the live versions are always better!!! This is the 1st time they played this song live in about 30 yrs!! The crowd appreciated it!! Be well and Gos bless… from Texas!!
Since you know bout Neils family Daughter and Wife , please do the Garden Live Clockwork Angels tour ,this is very emotional and from their last Album , The Garden refers to the family looking after the ones you love , This song has a huge meaning to Geddy his parents were Holocaust survivors , Also Alex his dad was a political prisoner in Serbia ,
Sometimes the time machine is available... sort of... check out Chicago & EWF covers by Leonid and Friends. An actual band on tour in today's time. @SaeedReacts.
I enjoy the live performances more so than the album myself as you can see how multi talented they are. Watching Geddy play the bass with his hands and the synth with his feet. They really capture the essence of a thunder storm. Fantastic song! Neil was a real nature lover. He spent a lot of time outdoors hiking, biking, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing Another suggestion is Earthshine live in Rio I really recommend Geddy's book My Effin Life. It is a great read and also has some great pictures as well. Cheers
This is one of my more favorite compositions from them. It's really closer to classical music than anything else in its structure and tone. It's sublime.
That's an interesting point. I always felt that this song's arrangement had a different feel & style to certainly the rest of the Permanent Waves album but had never thought about the classical music angle.
The picture this song creates in my head is so good it could never be reproduced on screen. Thank you for the reaction. I highly recommend you react to Working Man live in Cleveland. It's not heady or artistic just straight up rock 'n roll fire 🔥🔥🔥 It will melt your face. And it is my favorite RUSH performance of all time.
I count myself to be one of the lucky ones that saw this on the 2015 tour. My last of 35 Rush concerts dating back to Grace Under Pressure tour. At least one concert on each tour since 1985. Damn those Three Travelers, Men of Willowdale are missed terribly on stage. We miss you Neil. 😪💔
The more get familiar with Neil’s writing, it won’t be a surprise that this “Jabob’s Ladder” is the meteorological event and not the biblical reference.
Thank you so much, beautiful reaction, Todd from Ohio...would love to hear a reaction from the book, if you have the time...have you listened to 'Caress of Steel ',kicks-ass....
If this was from 2015, this was their last tour (R40)? I saw them on that tour in New Orleans. They played at LEAST one song from every album from Newest to Oldest....ended with Working Man. Concert was like 3 hours (with a 30 min intermission break).
Someone tell me anyone else that plays bass with hands, keys with his feet (btw Alex did a lot of that also, even Neil would trigger notes with his mallet kat (roll the bones)) and sings.
This song was last played live under the Exit stage left tour in the early to mid 80’s. So this was a real gem for them to play it on the final R40 tour. Along with Cygnus 1 which follows this track I believe?
I don’t want to write a book here. BUT (never start a sentence with BUT right???). I listened to the studio version of this song many times. But I need to say thank you saeedreacts. Thank you for bringing this live performance to me. I don’t think I would have found it on my own. It was truly epic (I hate to overuse the word epic). (BTW, no problem with the audio/video delay this time.) What a fantastic job they did on this. LIVE! WOW! Niel was ON this night. I don’t know about you, but what Niel brings to these songs is pure artistry. Realize, nothing Niel is playing is technically difficult (in this song) but what he brings to this song is frankly… I have no words. Because of the setup of this thought, I need to say it’s difficult. It’s not something I’ve ever heard a drummer do for a song and I never think I will hear it again. Unless it’s another Rush song.
You should listen to this again, but this time try to count out the beat. It starts in 3/4, goes to 4/4, then 5/4 5/4 5/4 6/4, back to 3/4,, and finally alternating 6/8 7/8 (or as Neil counted it 13/8).
Really not too deep lyrically here it was mainly an exercise in descriptive writing. The music is pretty exceptional as always like when Alex plays those subtle synth chords after he rips out his lead solo and then when Geddy switches to the keyboards Alex and him share duties on the Taurus bass pedals for that unearthly bottom end. In concert the low end on this song and a few others had that ‘pants flap’ feel where you could feel it moving through your body more than it was loud and you could hear it.🤘🖖✌️🥁🎸🎹🎤
It's funny, one can tell you learned? studied? or got your English by osmosis from watching the Sopranos. Great channel, and I mean no disrespect, just an observation based on what you have told us.
I learned English between 6 and 8 by binging American sitcoms like Fresh prince, Family Matters , Hanging with Mr Cooper, Full house, Step by Step, etc. Then switched over to Al Pacino & Robin Williams films. But around 2000 i discovered the Sopranos and probably watched it 15 times, so definitely very heavily influenced by that show in all different kinds of ways. So great observation 😄
This song wasn't played on stage for decades and the older live versions are arguably much heavier and darker. They make for a fascinating contrast with the mature version that Rush had become by the time of this recording. I am still in doubt which of those eras I like more - which is a huge compliment as I adore them both

Jacobs Ladder was a great movie 👍

Such a terrific show. I tear up thinking how I saw them in Philadelphia that year and never thought it would be the last time.
