    Oddie's Historical Feature - Re-edit Narrated Version
Jane Lewson, (1700 - 1816) sometimes called “Lady Lewson”, (because of her grand & ancient style of dress) was an 18th Century oddity, who lived until the age of 116 - over 90 years of that in a creepy, dark mansion, that she kept tightly barricaded....inside she glided around amongst the cobwebs & grime that was never allowed to be cleaned....floating from room to room, to make sure the beds were made up for guests who never stayed.
    Here is her story....
Many thanks to the fantastic artist Laurie Lipton for allowing me to use her fabulously creepy drawing @ 6:31 She has a channel on Facebook which you can find under her name, please check her great work out! When I was a little girl there was a very odd spinsterly librarian. She dressed in lace blouses with the Victorian style high collar with a brooch attached. Her skirts were long and always made of a beautiful wool plaid. The librarians grayish hair was always pulled back in a large bun. Her teeth were large and in perfect form but they were yellow and reminded me of an aging horses teeth. She was quiet but extremely intelligent and extremely well versed. She always reminded me of someone who had lived and been educated at a New England private girls college.
From the rumors in town she had never been married and she also was a great poet plus she was a shepherdess The librarian maintained a flock of sheep on her diminutive estate. She was known as the sheep lady. She considered her sheep to be her children. Later in her life the city tried to have her removed from her property and tried to remove the sheep from her land. She constantly fight back with the city and she always won her case because she was protected by what is called the grandfather law. Meaning that she had been there before the city ordinances became the law. The sheep lady let her sheep wonder in and out of her house in the winter they lived in the house with her.
As much time passed and the city grew larger and greed and development took over many properties she had a fight on her hands. Many of us felt that this was an egregious attempt to force an elderly woman off of her property and force her to sell her land for the development of condominiums.
Many of us from the surrounding cities attended a charitable event in her honor to help her preserve her home and helped her clean up her land where the sheep had grazed for so many decades. The work was done on her house and the land cleaned and she lived there peacefully until she died. The shepherdess and poet passed away about 25 years ago. She was a woman ahead of her time. Eastern college educated. Never married. Had a career and lived her life the way she wanted to.
The mayor of our city who did not like the sheep woman because she would not sell her land to developers of the city said many harsh things about the shepherdess behind her back. When we had the charitable fund raiser for her the mayor told the newspaper and the TVs what a wonderful woman the shepherdess was and what a wonderful person she was. What a sickening politician and a liar. Soon after her death her family squabble over her her estate. Some of her relatives could not sell the property fast enough to the greedy developers. Eventually her land was cleared and condominiums now cover the memory of the librarian who was a poet a unique individual and also a shepherdess. May you rest in peace Dorthea Davis.

Thank you for sharing that. How wonderful.
Bless you that you fought on her side against the greedy developers/politicians. They see nothing but material gain...and it will be their ultimate misery.
It also doesn't matter about her squabbling family, and their mad scramble for filthy lucre - what matters is that Ms Davis could live out her days on her property. And good on her for fighting her corner and winning!

One of my favorite things to do, to find some peace, is set aside a day, grab a good book, and pack a lunch with a bit of wine or beer, and head to an old and secluded.
    cemetery
I love the stillness and quiet. I sometimes sit where nothing modern can be seen and wish I could be transported back in time, to see mourners at these long forgotten grave sites.
When I walk in the woods, there are times I run across old abandoned houses or cars, and try to envision what life was like when these things were still being used..
Anyway, I use your historical stories as a treat to myself when I am done working.

I used to do the very same thing many years back with my ex - we would pack a picnic and spend many hours at a beautiful & historic cemetery right on the cliffs off Sydney, Australia. So very peaceful and the pervading sense of all those 'sleeping' around us, who were once like we.

My heart goes out to this woman. Sounds like once her husband passed away, a big part of her passed with him or something. She had a fortune and none of it mattered. She didn't see the world and didn't want anyone to see her. Hopefully she is with him again now, and is complete and happy.
I think it is very special you will be doing giveaways. Speaks on your character and kindness. Not many in the world like you. You asked for input, so I guess my 2 cents on the matter would be that the treasures you will so generously send off that have a little value, get sent to those who actively participate. And the treasures that are cool but do not hold much in the way of value maybe can be given to winners of your more random drawings. I must say though, it is quite a gift to us all that your doing this in the first place. Thank you for being awesome. Hope your having an amazing day. 😊

I stumbled upon your you tube and am mesmerized at how many of these women whose lives you shared with me or I should say us. Hit me as direct to my heart. When I shop I only go to ancient or antique stores. I live in my own world and surround myself with only items that belonged to others and have a story. I purchase nothing but desire stories and offer the promise of keeping the items story alive. I long to travel back in time and sit in some of the old rockers, bathe in the old tubs, stroll through the gardens and back streets and wonder why and who lived there, touched the flowers, lost their flower to some devilishly handsome yet insincere rogue who mislead the beauties to succumb to his charms. to walk a spoiled pup. To seek out justice for the poor and down trodden, to seclude myself as a cocoon in a time capsule with items celebrating era after era. Thank you for sharing your gift of time travel and the odd stories. I will share them with my grandchildren. Regards, from a woman who walks back in time through her mind and seeks familiar haunts to ponder life as it was, how it became, what twisted the person to bend they way they did and then to go back to see who else was twisted or so timid or insecure that they could not move into a new era. You truly have a fascinating mind and eye. Now to walk my dog which my doppelganger brought to me.

Thanks for the interesting story. No one ever really knows how long they'll live. My grandmother lived to be 111. Although all of my other relatives have usually only lived into their 80's. She lived alone at home till she was 107. She wasn't a health fanatic, just an average person. So you never know,...anyone may live to be extremely old. Best wishes!

They just don't want to come out apparently. My mother was 68 when she died and her teeth were still under the gum line at the time of her death. Hers never broke through either.

Aelwyn Witch poor old soul. Gotta wonder about her age though. 116 and mold, dust, mildew? Pigs grease? And I love looking through old pics and memento mori. I collect such things. I’m glad she had her pets with her. Grey Mansions was a exploitive look at the Kennedy’s 2 eccentric relatives, it was also very sad. OCD and agoraphobia, I have a huge family or I can see myself in her. In Mobile Alabama they had such a lady. She would go out on her widows walk to look for her husband everyday in black bombazine, there was more to the story than that but I forget it. That was long ago, I say this as I walk around in my 1960’s attire asking the kids to make me a martini at 9 am in the morning. Just kidding. But who knows what the future could hold...

I could listen to your stories all day long, but there isn’t enough time as a mom and a caregiver to my parents, but I promise to watch one of your beautifully composed videos per day. The giveaway sounds so enticing and quite generous of you! This reminds me of an antique I had purchased many years ago in Illinois. I had a feeling about that portrait. It was quite beautiful, but the man’s face felt familiar to me and the main reason why I had purchased it to begin with! I started to dream about this man, -but not in a good way. I do recall his entire outfit, all the way to his shoes. I remember he was tall and that smell of tobacco in my dream made me sick to my stomach. I know, sounds crazy, but it it really happened. My mom told me to get rid of the photo and I reluctantly did.The frame is now empty and I no longer have those dreams. I ticked it away in a safe place, but it’s it easy to find a large photo for that oval frame.
It’s funny how some items have a scent or an energy of the original owner. I often wonder how that person lived, who he was and how he died. I’ll never find out now, but his face and his body in that long brown suit in my dream is as clear as day to me. I can show you the frame. Perhaps you can tell me where it might have originated from! -It’s not a big deal though. I don’t think about it. lol
Well, thank you once again for a lovely story, although Jane Lewson was quite the odd character. Who would have thought? Huh!! I wonder if she had lost her mind at one point. Perhaps solitude didn’t help her at all. Perhaps she needed clinical help? Oh, well...
BTW: have you heard of the true story of Emmeline, Sins of our Mothers? It’s directed by David Hoffman. This took place in the 19th century New England, USA. She was a mystery and everyone ostracized her. Her story is very sad and quite bizarre. Poor old lady. Mr. Hoffman interviewed some very old ladies about Emmeline’s true story. I think you might enjoy it!
Well, I have to get up in a few hours. Have a good evening/day!
    C

The “Maverick of the family” or on occasion as my grandmother referred to me without having any explanation for it... really. She was, in her youth living in a country setting riding a horse to her Victorian era influenced grandmothers House when she was 10. 50 miles in the spring and home again for school to start in the fall.As she was influenced into a culture with a generation missing mostly because she didn’t like her own mother who “wasn’t a Lady”. I also was reared by my grandmother missing another. I was an out of time misfit that by chance allowed me a genuine creative streak. As a result I appreciate your videos. I haven’t been a recluse for sure and spent 13 years in a Central American rainforest / jungle and found many treasures for my own personal enjoyment as no one else seemed to appreciate what only I could see. Once again I want to thank you for possessing a lovely and interesting gift of rare appreciation and sharing it with all of us.

You will be shocked at how quickly time passes as you get older. Enjoy your life while you are young! There is plenty of time when you get old, to sit and reflect on what you never got around to doing, but cant do now.

Love hearing the "older" stories again! You're amazing, Oddie 👏 Hope you enjoyed that cold beer + had a lovely walk with your pup! Thanks for another creepy trip to the past. Was living like that 116 yrs worth it?! Somehow I think Mrs Lewson would still say yes...that's what makes this story great! She chose to live like that...odd to say the least lol Take care, be well + Thank You!

I came across this video recently. It's a must share with my friend who was my Victorian Literature professor! I don't believe she knows about Mrs. Lewson, but will be absolutely tickled to learn! Thanks Oddie, this is a lovely and well composed video, as indeed all of yours are.

I really enjoy all your videos. They're very enjoyable, informative and this one somehow reminded me of how I've grown up back in Europe and how an old couple in our extremely small town used to pull a wagon with their cows and about several older people in our town... wonderful memories, thx for reminding me of those

Hi. I am a new follower and am very glad I cam across your channel. I must say that your narration of the videos is much better than just reading them. Your accent reminds me of my parents and relatives. Both my parents were born and raised in South Africa by English decent parents. I still have an Uncle and Aunt living in South Africa. Also an Aunt and Uncle living in New Zealand. So your voice, in some way, connects me to my roots. Long way of saying really enjoy your stuff and look forward to more. Heather

I absolutely loved this!!! I wish I could go back in time and see all. These Beautiful houses,, cemeteries, art work ect....I hope she was happy in her reclusiveness....I wonder if her daughter ever spent time with her all those years? She might even had had grandchildren...I can understand people wanting to be by themselves when their life partner has passed....but not to the extent of a complete shut in...I need a few friends and furry friends in m my life and I couldn't imagine not seeing my kids or gkids either..but that's what makes us all unique...we all have our own way of living...Beautiful artwork and as always Oddy, your storytelling moves me...God Bless you my dear one and Namaste💜
