we hope you enjoyed these tips! all photos in the video were taken by our pal nick spruck - instagram.com/nickspruck
BIG tip: get a cinebloom or some other diffusion filter. this almost is always on my camera, it gives that cool bloom/haze around lights that takes a lot of the digital edginess off the photo
Thanks!!!
I have been using the Cinebloom 20% for a while, great results! Definitely feels a little overdo, but helps to turn the shot into a banger. 5% would have been better option for daylight shots.
@@Govvind333 i have 10, it’s usually good, in between 5 and 20
Using a vintage lens helps too to get somewhat close to the film look
@@gaarax0x Agreed!
I recommend using Lightrooms grain as opposed to a grain overlay regardless if it's taken from "real" scans or not. It doesn't behave in the same way as real grain because it doesn't interact with midtones or shadows differently. Lightrooms grain actually does interact with your image and adds individual new pixels. In print, it looks far better than any overlay.
I edit photos in premiere pro so i don’t care
Thank you for the tip!
@@3-y86 My condolences
@@be2Gee only Color gradient
@@3-y86what’s wrong with the color grading in Lightroom?
Brilliant video! Sidenote: I like the simplicity of the talking head setup taking place in the kitchen with a laptop. That simplicity from a 1m sub channel is refreshing in a era that has so many fancy TH-cam studios -- not that those aren't great, it just makes it feel more approachable for those of us that don't have a perfect IKEA-esque space to film in, but would like to build a channel up. Inspiration all around
This times 100, i realised recently that I’m tired of the duo tone light youtube look
This is the best squarespace plug ever 🤣🤣
Thank you so much for another video! I absolutely LOVE the film look and is one of the biggest reason I purchased my first real camera as editing RAW from those cameras is 100x times better than on phones. Also love how you touched on points that other tutorials never do and it's exactly those small things that make the "film look edit" even more realistic.
Hope you two had great holidays so far!
Great tips, and definitely some things I didn’t previously know! Love the style and simplicity of the setup in this video too, thanks man!
Would it be possible to see a part 2 where you do this for portraits/lifestyle photos or anything with human subjects? Maybe even a couple different camera brands raws (Sony, Canon, Fuji etc)? Getting skin tones and the overall look on par with film can be tricky sometimes. I shoot Sony, and Canon/Fuji seems a little easier to get there, but any brand would be really cool to see.
Watching your photoshop tutorials remind me how little I actually know about photoshop, cool tip with the halations.
Wow! I liked that you covered older versions of Lightroom as well. Additionally, what you did in Photoshop blew my mind!
Probably another good tip is to use references of those shots from film cameras to determine the best approach to edit digital photos like film.
Awesome tips! Love the glowing technique in the photoshop :)
Thank you for another year of banger videos! Looking forward to learning more from you guys next year!
thank you 🙏🏻
finally someone actually analyzing what film does to color! btw love your sponsor section, very creative and great humor!

You’re the best, thank you so much for this🙏🏼🖤
Awesome. Gonna try
Wow man thanks a lot, I did some of these tricks after but not that good, and I was forgetting about the noise, thanks for the tips and you own a subscription

Mango Street is the best. Great video as usual!
Love the video (and A24 sweatshirt), Daniel! Quick question: wouldn’t a gaussian blur filter (instead of surface blur) give a more even halation in effect?
GREAT VIDEO AS USUAL 👌

great to see you hit the 1M mark well deserved.....
That was the first Ad I've sat through in ages.
You got me with the ad XD
The Ending was nice 😂
Hey bro! thank you so much for nominating nickspruck! Because of that I ganged a "like" on a photo of myself from a guy I've been a fan for years, Ryan Muirhead! The photo of wxaves reminded me a lot of his style. Nothing more random.
killer ad at the end woww
Thanks! I realized that I strongly prefer digital. Every example looked so much better than film!
Thanks for sharing. However, when editing without a film photo side by side as a reference, how can I edit it to match more of a film look?
Colored shadows is one of my favorites
The ad made me chortle!
That ad was worth it 😂
It's a beautiful image. The sensibility that Japan and Asia do not have is wonderful!
Wtf lol... One of the most unique sponsor stuff .
Love your videos bro! Out of curiosity, what aspect of LR grain do you not like?
it has a distinct “lightroom grain” look to us. we still use it, but always good to have alternatives.
that squarespace bit at the end damn, now that's what I call an ad
The best Ads on the internet 😂🤞🏾
Thanks
lmao that was the best squarespace ad i've ever seen, so fucking creative jsdjsjdksj
amazing video and learned a lot! Also step 4 seems easier with a bloom filter
yeah, a bloom filter would be lovely.
how do you get the whites around the lights such a nice blue/green?
