I am blown away by the response to this video. I worked extremely hard on the presets, the shop, the fake film box I made in Blender (for no reason other than I wanted everything to be perfect) and, of course, making this video. I have an exam tomorrow and hustled like crazy the past week to finalize everything and also study for the exam, with 12h+ sitting at my desk every day. It makes me so incredibly happy that the effort seems to be paying off. Thank you everybody ❤ Also I just realized, after 3 days, that PayPal checkout hasn't been enabled the whole time since launch... Thank you so much! It means a lot coming from you 🙏 I really enjoy your film emulation process and I'll definitely continue to play around with it in different situations. I'll have to try combining my presets with your more sophisticated grain process.
This is the first video of yours I've seen, and I subscribed after 2 minutes. You've made a masterpiece, it is better than most of the popular photography youtubers'. Thank you. I'll buy your presets, they are useful.
@FUTC Thank you so much for creating this tutorial! I've been trying to expand my horizons with the way I edit in LR and this video helped me gain a valuable understanding of the underlying properties of that groovy, nostalgic filmic look! Already tried applying these techniques to some raw shots and I am so stoked on how the edits look.
I made a few home made diffusion filters using silver and black spray paint on the inside of cheap uv filters. It's a little more work than hairspray, but it is more permanent. You can use acetone to clean the filter if you make a mistake. The silver filter is on my X100V all of the time.
I really love your content about how to make digital photos look like film, I hope you can create more detailed content like this. I'm looking forward to it
I really love your content about how to make digital photos look like film, I hope you can create more detailed content like this. I'm looking forward to it 😊
Hey man, realize you’re a new creator. Just want to say you’re killing it. This video is funny, informative, entertaining, and well put together. I’ve subscribed, keep up the great work!
I got a Glimmerglass filter recently and I think it was worth the money. The softness and incredibly beautiful blooms it adds to my video have to be seen to be believed - instantly makes my footage stand out in an ocean of same-same digital sensor videos. I think the trick with this type of filter is that "less is more" - a subtle effect is best.
Thank you very much for this. I've been trying to mimic the film look and watched many videos, but it was hard to replicate it as a beginner. Exactly as you demonstrated, I could easily get the most stunning film look image I've ever achieved. Thank you.
I've been experimenting with an analogue look for digital images for a couple of years now. Tried all the same things you've mentioned in your video aswell: lens filters, color editing, presets, vintage lenses. But I think there is a certain limit to lightroom / capture one / or whatever when it comes to emulating these looks. Furthermore it gets difficult if you want to have consistent results. Film behaves very differently. The amount of light can already change the outcome of a certain film stock. Personally, I think the closest you can get to film is the Dehancer Photo Plug-In for Lightroom or Capture One. It was mainly created for filmmakers who wanted to enhance their color grading game, but they decided to also create a stills only version. Honestly, that plug-in is just superior to everything out there at the moment. DxO is good, but can't compete with it. RNI is not even close. And all "filmic" presets are not worth mentioning (no shade btw). I think you should try Dehancer out or even make a video about it. You could compare real film stocks with the digital emulation from Dehancer, even though that has been done before. But still, it's crazy how accurate you can get your digital photos. Also you have access to halation- , bloom- , compression- , overexposing-behaviour- and grain-tools (these tools react dynamically with the input source). Would love to see or hear what you think about it, since you are an experienced film shooter and know how these things are hard to recreate in lightroom alone since these parameters are too static in LR.
Thank you for your input, I appreciate you taking the time 🙏 That sounds super interesting and I’ll definitely look into it! I tried to do my best in Lightroom but native support for halations, bloom, etc. sounds amazing
Thank you, never heard of that plug-in. Sounds like it might be the ultimate thing! I even pondered at one point if I could make a plug-in for highlight bloom and halation and especially grain. There are no plug-in that does grain like film does. Maybe this is it.
@@SamBorgman Glad I can help. I myself have been looking for ages and it's just very convenient now. And the results speak for themselves. Dehancer is pretty expensive though. Maybe you should try out the free trial version first and see how you like it. Dehancer themselves also have a very specific guide on how to get the best results - worth looking into when trying the trial version. Worth mentioning: even though it's a heavy price for the plug-in, it's not a subscription. So you only pay once and than you are good to go for the rest of your digital editing life 😅
@@p_syv8053 Oh thank god! I can’t deal with subscriptions. I moved to Capture One because of greedy Adobe. No one should be using subscription based software.
100% Dehancer is the best thing on the market to emulate film right now. It’s not even close, honestly. And you’re right again, LR and other software simply do not have the tools to reliably and consistently match film, because film has a non-linear color reproduction which is very different to the way that LR processes RAW data. I’m definitely not an expert, but my understanding is that film responds to color and light with different “outputs” than you’d get with digital. Everything you do in LR has an equal but opposite reaction. You can try to mitigate it a bit, but the product usually ends up being a quite over processed looking photo which has something “off” about it. Sure, you can push the skin tones to be more yellow and less red as you might see in Portra 400 on a Frontier, but you end up losing the detail and gradient in the tonality and they end up looking like a pallor alien. Or you can push the yellows in one direction, but that also influences the greens, which are already being processed to try to make them look like “film greens,” but when you get the yellows looking right in the skin tones or the light on the side of a wall, now the greens look too processed. Film doesn’t have this problem because it’s exposed “as is,” and any changes made on top of that are made on a non-linear reproduction, so the ratios of colors and the way they interact (or more specifically the way they DON’T) isn’t changed nearly as much. I think LUTs are the best thing we have right now to replicating film, but even then, we’re a long way off because frankly, the resources don’t really exist outside of cottage industries trying to pull off this very niche feat. But I agree with you on Dehancer.

Enjoyed your video and it was great timing because I am creating a video for my own channel, reviewing some presets and recipes for the Fujis. Thanks mate :)
Just bought the presets! First presets I’ve ever bought, great price! It definitely looks better with photos that were taken on a lens with a diffusion/bloom filter and photos with interesting lighting. I’m happy with the purchase and look forward to using them more!
As someone that also has a set of DIY diffusion filters, shoots Fuji, loves the Fuji 27mm, and used to shoot film almost 2 decades ago, you hit all the key points. Shadow, Mid, and Highlight color adjustments advice is spot on as well. Fuji also does better with highlights in my opinion and handles that over exposure for the film look nicely. Also, got a good chuckle out of the cheapest UV filter and hair spray bit because that is almost exactly what I've done with a bunch of filters. Though I've also tried fixative for working with chalk (glimmer glass vibes) and chalk board paint (pro mist vibes) with some success. And if you want a more film shooting experience and can swing the cost, an XPro2's OVF with the 27mm is just perfection. Just the right amount of room around the framelines to easily adjust your composition without things feeling tiny.
Thank you! I should definitely experiment with more DIY filters! As for the X-Pro 2, I reviewed the X-Pro 1 a couple of months ago and quite enjoyed it, but I was conflicted on the optical viewfinder as the offset made it hard in many situations to compose very accurately. But I would love to try another X-Pro camera in the future, especially in combination with the XF27mm
@@futc.photography The parallax at closer focusing distances takes a while to adjust to for sure - I just love rangefinder style cameras and the little boxes they look like. Going along with using vintages lenses for their less refined optics - cheap manual lenses from companies such as 7artisans, TTartisans, Pergear, etc. generally have the flaws that are associated with fast film lenses. Some favorites of mine are the TTartisan 17 1.4, Pergear 25 1.8, and 7artisan 35 1.2 Voigtlander as well but that's $$$
Don't underestimate your work. I've found some good free film presets for Capture One (you may like it). But your recipe showed me how to do that by myself. While other presets use complex color grading with the curve tool, your way uses some tools I better understand. Every time I changed one of these curves, the whole thing ends in a complete mess. Now I can make some modifications by myself. That's great. Thank you very much. Hope your exam is going well. Ich drücke die Daumen.
I have searched all of the internets for a tutorial as good as this one. Seriously thank you so much! I’m too poor to get into film but I want the film look and this helps a lot!!!

Stumbled across this while searching further about how to replicate film photography outputs. This was great. I purchased your presets! This will be handy for my upcoming photos. Using a Sony A6400 btw.
The voigtlander Nokton 23mm is a great start to get the film look! Film will always be film, digital will always be digital. Can get pretty close though!
It's true that film generally retains much more of the highlights because of the log-like response vs the digital linear response, but it's a oversimplification to say digital retains more of the shadows, it greatly depends not just on the dynamic range of the digital sensor but also on what raw value the camera's manufacturer decided to be mid-gray. A high raw value for mid-gray will give a lot of shadow information and clips highlights sooner, where as a low raw value for mid-gray will give less shadow information but retains much more of the highlights. You can influence this by setting an exposure compensation in camera. Highlight compression is one of the defining features of film vs digital, so you can under-expose a few EV in camera and then in post boost the exposure and compress the highlights to emulate it, this is greatly dependent on your camera's capabilities though so mileage may vary.
After watching this I bought both your and Oliver Keys presets. Although Oliver Keys are great, I feel like yours are miles ahead. Oliver Keys take a bit more tuning with each image as just applying the preset left me with an almost unusable image every time with me needing to adjust far more than just exposure. Yours will most likely be my go to preset to use on my everyday photos. I threw an old canon 50mm on my A7iii and very light hairspray on a uv filter method and the photos I'm getting are the closest to real film I've personally achieved. Its really inspired me to get out and take more photos especially with the warm tones on the F400K preset, thanks for presets

Some favorites of mine are the TTartisan 17 1.4, Pergear 25 1.8, and 7artisan 35 1.2
Voigtlander as well but that's $$$
OMG man I didnt photograph for a while but today I tried what you said and went outside and it was the most I had with photography for a long time.
I just purchased these! I can’t wait to try them out as I recently got into film photography and was baffled about the costs of everything
Thank you so much! Really makes my day that you are supporting me! I hope you enjoy the presets 😊
@@futc.photography do you have an instagram? i’d love to tag you in photos i’ve used your presents on!
Really nice presets, one of the best film simulations I've seen! Keep up the great work.
Thanks, will do!
I have searched all of the internets for a tutorial as good as this one. Seriously thank you so much! I’m too poor to get into film but I want the film look and this helps a lot!!!
Haha thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it!
I love your energy man. keep it up!
Thank you! I appreciate it! 🥰
Man what a great video! Such a cool dude, loved the tribute to Oliver Keys' work❤️
Great video. Loved your attitude, hard work and ideas. I've purchased the presets to support what you're doing. Keep going!
Thank you for the kind words that means a lot 🙏
That hairspray trick was awesome!
I stumbled upon this video and you've gotten yourself a new subscriber. I enjoy shooting film but I find myself just taking pictures on my phone as it's always on my hands. This is quite handy. Awesome work!!
Thank you for watching and subscribing! 😊
Blessed be the TH-cam Algorithmus für dieses Video inklusive peak film photography humor auf meiner fyp, wirklich gut gemacht und sehr hilfreich
Danke!!!
Found this channel via this video. Yes, subscribed. Very chill but great pace. Covered perfectly in under 10 minutes AND provided a ton of value. Sheesh. Preset purchased sir because I want to say thank you !
how good is the preset?
Thank you so much for the support! 🥰
Thank you so much for this video man. Very entertaining and so incredibly useful and informative!
Love the giant D20 in the back
Stumbled across this while searching further about how to replicate film photography outputs. This was great. I purchased your presets! This will be handy for my upcoming photos. Using a Sony A6400 btw.
Thank you I appreciate your support!!
amazing, when you think about, not many want the exact, but want the experience
Just bought the pack and I really enjoy the presests. Especially the F400K (for fuji) is already on so many of my pictures. Thank you man!
That’s so great to hear!! Thank you for your support and have fun with them 😊
The voigtlander Nokton 23mm is a great start to get the film look!
The DIY bloom was amazing haha. I had just bough one too 😥 Great vid man
After watching this I bought both your and Oliver Keys presets.
Omg hairspray!!!! Love it, and wish I knew before grabbing diffusion filters 😭 Anywho, great video and thanks for sharing all your tips👌
New subscriber here. I bought you preset just because I wanted to support. I wish you all the best and I will keep an eye out for more videos. I’m a Fujifilm shooter and look forward to more content!
Super gut gemachtes Video mit tollen Tipps, danke dir!
Danke für das Lob!
Im excited to check these out!! I use an x100t as my edc and a Sony for working/ travel cam so im very stoked to see what i can get outta these presets!! :)
Keep up the great work, im looking forward to seeing more of your videos!! :))
I think there is another way to get this Film vintage look we all like
By using old vintage lenses on any Mirrorless camera
I do use couple of old vintage lenses on my Sony A7 sometimes and the results are not bad at all
Thank you for the video by the way
Please keep doing nice content for us …
Agreed. The Helios 44-2 is still my go to lens. The price is so cheap but my favourite photos all came from the Helios.
Awesome work mate and I enjoy the humour 😂
I appreciate it 🙏😊
your sick preset is sick and better than any one i have seen
Thank you!
Great video! Thank you for the tips!
Just discovered your channel. I love your presence and humor. To the point and useful tutorial
Thank you! That means a lot ☺️
Nice video. Got a cheap filter for 11€ and bought the presets right away.
But honetly, nothing can beat film.
Hi! I just stumbled upon your video and I love your content! It's so well thought out, and your personality and jokes make it entertaining! You seem to put a lot of care into what you produce. Good job and good luck!

I am excited to try these Presets with my Ricoh GRIII.
this is amazing and so helpful! thank u! love your humility and skill and generosity
Thank you for the kind words!! It means a lot 🙏
That intro needs an oscar nomination
You are so talented! Thank you for this tutorial
Great stuff here! Let me just suggest that learning how to “read” a histogram means always getting the exposure you want - not just the one the camera wants to give you. Keep Posting!
Just bought the presets and they look great, thank you.
Looking forward to trying your presets 👍🏻great videos
Thank you for your support!!
Viele Grüße aus Köln-Ehrenfeld! Starkes Video :)
Bought your presets to be used with my A7iii. Thank you for the DIY tip on the bloom filter. 👍
Yes, hairspray hack is awesome and more people should know about it ;)
I agree! Last year when I tried it for the first time I was shocked how good it works 😳
Great video! And great channel in general. Thanks for all the explanations. I downloaded your presets which are great.
