Also what do you think of the audio? I might have been too harsh. I think the audio is okay for some games, like Moss, where music isn't the core feature. Games like Beat Saber or Audica require much better headphones.
Let me know if you have any accessible mods for the Rift S audio!

Ive been getting a lot of comments about the audio. I am getting Glistco's headphone Koss adapters. GLISTCO is company that specializes in Oculus Rift accessories using 3D printing. Make sure you subscribe so you can get notified when I publish his video!

I think they had to cut manufacture cost somewhere in order to avoid a high price - for the audio downgrade I mean. They want to lower it from 90 hz to 80 hz because they still need to keep the minimum i5 4590 and GTX970/1060 as a standard. Great video man, very informative. Really wanna get a 'S' now. Really like my CV1 though, but the screen clarity upgrade is just too good not to.

I've just receive the Rift S one week ago and are amazing. The sound is not so bad,I enjoy them with Xplane11 and FF A320 aircraft.

Good stuff! As for the sound, including those Koss headphones like the original headset would have probably added over $200 in the Rift S cost, and I'm sure they were trying to keep the cost competitive. My solution is to use the Aftershokz bone conduction headphones (search B07RQLRV7Q on Amazon). They have excellent sound and wrap around making it easy to wear with the Rift S and also allow you to pair with multiple devices (like your PC and smartphone) making them even more versatile. Looking forward to more videos!

Overall, I feel it's an improvement over my CV1. Display is better, and sweet spot is much bigger. If you don't want to mess with external headphones, and improve upon the pitiful built in speakers, open sound settings in sys tray, sound control panel, right click on Rift S headphones, properties, enhancements, check mark headphone virtualization, and loudness equalization, then ok. I restarted just to make sure it was applied. Made a very noticeable difference in volume, and sound quality. Such a simple thing to do. You'd think Oculus would be on top of that.

I mainly play Driving Sims, I racing and Assetto Corsa, yesterday I bought the RIFT S and omg, just wow!!!!!! It's so clear, I can actaully now sit back in the car and see everything, and I mean EVERYTHING on the dash, small speedo numbers, delta times, everything is just so crispy clear, on the OG Rift I had to squint, move my head closer etc, close 1 eye, to maybe even slightly read the dash. I can now see so much further into the distance it's mindblowing. I was so mindblown I actually went and loaded up a game I stopped playing as it was so blurry and bad on the OG Rift, and that is American Truck Simulator, and again, WOW. Everything is so clear, the dash in the truck is all so clear, I can now stick to the speed limits without having to squint my eyes and move about in the cab like a weirdo. I'm so happy I bit the bullet and bought the S, I been umming and arring for so long. To me this is a significant upgrade, to a sim racer. The 10hz drop I also didn't notice, everything is just so crispy clear, that it's all so smooth anyway, as for sound I always used my own headset anyway so that doesn't bother me.

I just have a pair of $40 Amazon noise cancelling earbuds. I just wrapped them up and they're just dedicated so all I do is plug him in my ears because they're hanging over the sides whenever I put my headset on. I have the earbuds on my original CV-1 and honestly I like the sound quality from the earbuds a lot better than the over-ear headphones even though the over-ear headphone sounded great.

I did the same thing sold my CV1 and then could not get it back so I went with the S and ended up returning it withing a week. I had issues with the tracking and some issues with it being a lot darker than the CV1 which was very noticeable when playing RecRoom. The CV1 is a better vr experience to me but I might end up trying the S again it might have just been my headset I'm not sure. If I don't end up getting the S again I might get the Vive just to get back into VR.

    Hey man, great review!
I think Rift S is what the original Rift was meant to be. It's not a total upgrade or step up. And I believe that Facebook is trying to make it more economically viable, instead targeting it on the enthusiast public. I have the original rift and it's a pain in the ass to setup the sensors, too much clutter! I just ordered the Rift S, I became more motivated to do that after the software update that people have been talking about. I am also beginning to develop for it, and the ease of setup of Rift S will make a difference. Peace!

It was a nightmare to get this running without games continuously crashing with a "d3D" error. I love it. If you haven't experienced Asguards wrath, and it interests you get it. Amazing VR experience and game, if you're rich it would be worth $400 just to play that game. I had no problem with the weight, it seemed light to me but I've been using the PSVR helmet. To fix my problem, I first went into control panel/Folder options/view and turn off display icon on thumbnail, crazy eh? Imagine how long it took me to find that tip! I use Afterburner to overclock my GPU slightly. It was 200Mhz overclocked so I turned that down to -1000 or 100, I might edit this later. Anyway them 2 tips fixed a very serious problem I and many others have/had. Asguards Wrath started off straight away(It didn't even get as far as starting the actual game before fix) and after 30 minutes I now think all the hassle was worth it. If you just want to play oculus rift s games/pc games, like me then the Oculus Rift S I'd go for. A lot of people are saying the OLED screen on the Quest is better. Believe me when you read the text in this game, it is the crystal clear, OLED didn't have crystal clear text in the videos I studied. It's a better headset. People think the oculus rift s is overpriced when you can get a quest the same price. I think the quest is overpriced. There you got a decisive final verdict at last! After watching 20 videos...Also the sound. I love it! I was using it on New Years day so the room was quiet, but it fully immersed me, again coming from the fiddly PSVR. Defo 100% better sound then the Go. Oh and Lenova are excellent at what they do, cheap laptops doesn't mean rubbish tech company. They certainly know what they are doing. Why would a set by "oculus" automatically be better? Lenova vs oculus? Lenova everytime.

I love the CV-1 headphones. They sounded awesome. But I do understand why they went with the audio-less design. I have purchased two OG Rifts for my household. Between those two I have had five replacement sent to me. The first one was from a bad right screen going bad after like 2 months. I got a replacement 6 months later left audio without, got a replacement 6 months later right audio went out Got a replacement from that one. Still have that one. Bought a second one. six months later right audio went out. Got a replacement, 6 months later right audio went out. Still have that one. They lost a shit ton of money because those fucking headphones. Although I may not like the design choice, with my first-hand experience on the amount of money that they dumped into me giving me replacements, I understand why they did it.

Nick Gurs OLED pixels are spaced and arranged differently than LCD. Remember, you are magnifying your screen, and although OLED has better black contrast, you’re seeing more of the spaces between the pixels too. That’s where a good chunk of the SDE comes from. For VR, LCD is a better option over OLED... at least until we see a HUGE increase in pixel densities.

He is not wrong. Rift S is sharper. You can't mistake the IPD on a Quest. That's one of first steps you do. It's also super easy to do.When I first got the Quest, I had the impression that it was sharper, with all the hype and just looking at the numbers. Then when I put in on, it reminded me of the HTC: Bright colors, but very noticeable screen door effect. Of course, it's a little sharper than the HTC and more like a HTC vive pro, but still has SDE. This and a number of other reasons caused me to exchange the Quest for a Rift-S.

    • @BauerMECH

twitch.tv/ENDER wiggin I was under the impression that no one is making striped OLED screens anymore, so I can only assume implementing such tech would skyrocket the cost of the headset. Pen tile matrices has severe drawbacks when magnified. SDE is one of them, but color shifting is another not many people are talking about. Because the VR lenses distort light at such a great degree, you’ll see the RGB channel’s separate around the perimeters. I bet we’ll see backlight dimming tech being pushed in upcoming VR headsets that have LCDs before we see improvements in OLED. Who really knows though? 👍

    th-cam.com/video/2Ax2Q6zPevo/w-d-xo.html
My first experience an actual stand-alone VR headset was in the mid-90’s with the VFX1. With a resolution of somewhere around 240sq per eye, 256 colors at a time, severe tracking/movement latency, and a frame rate that had us calling it the “tunnel-vision migraine machine”, ANY of today’s headsets are like a dream come true in comparison. These early devices were novel, but expensive and limited to a handful of playable games like Descent, Quake, and some flight simulator whose title escapes me. Neat, yes... at least until you either succumbed to the headache or gave up after repeatedly crashing DOS, haha.
So, although we may be able to pick these products apart to find their flaws, I’m still thrilled to be able to use ANY of these devices. They are exponentially more capable and affordable than their pre-2015 predecessors... heck, even our lowest-end cell phone VR rigs have more processing power than the PCs we were tethered to way back when... and can give the wearer a great experience. So, I see a fine line between honest assessment and dogging tech based merely on one’s limitless expectations, level of entitlement, or some unyielding brand loyalty.

The visuals are absolutely crisp and the colors are deep and vibrant. I had major issues before the latest update of Oculus Home and the device firmware, especially with the connection to the display port, but since the update, the Rift-S performs absolutely flawless. Roomscale simply rocks and the free space on my desk and the free USB ports are a bonus on top. Good review, I too think the blacks are ok. Yes OLED has better blacks, but with the CV1 there where so much godrays, that blacks were smeared in most cases. So the lack of Godrays with the Rift S helps make those blacks on par with the CV1 at lest for me. The FOV seemed better then the old Rift for me, but that can come down to your face shape and how the headset fits. My IPD is 68 and I have no problem, but the large sweet spot on the Rift S lenses I thinks helps a lot with over and under IPD range.
For the Sound I use this www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1036457-REG/sony_mdrxb50ap_b_deep_bass_in_ear.html And you can use velcro ties to bundle the wires around the halo strap and just leave them plugged in, you will just have the two earbuds hanging down, and just put them in after the headsets on and there should be very little cord to snag on.

Is it possible to play sound from my home cinema instead of the rift itself??

You can select any device in Windows sound control panel. Rift S just adds headphones device there.

I have a giant 650 watt surround sound setup and I can tell you, don't use one for VR. The sound when you turn in VR follows you but your speakers don't turn with your head. It will totally screw up your positional awareness. Also for me the accoustics of the room are usually noticeably different than how audio should sound in the virtual environment. Buy a good pair of headphones.

@@TheWarmotor good point....still in game like beat saber it should be better than rift speaker....kind of shame they didnt release the headset with a proper sound configuration...
