JD Ros is it just me or was setting up the PSVR to be playable a hell nightmare, the cord connected to the vr is like nothing so the box is either on a table right next to you in the way or dangling and weighing down your vr.
@@kadan_gustafson6609 There Is virtually no screendoor on the psvr, the tracking is a bit crappy, the titles are way better than anything out there so far but Oculus Is catching up,go to my channel I am an actual user of these products,I still have the rift cv1 and will be investing in the ps5 and psvr 2 when it comes out, everyone is buying quest and rift s trying to become untethered, when in actuality you will have to buy the link at over 80 bucks to go any further with quest, the rift s is awesome as is the cv1, the psvr is no slouch and has the best looking and most comfortable headset out.
@@pcgspot5701 I own the PSVR and don't tell me that "there is virtually no screendoor on the PSVR." The screendoor effect is horrible. I've never used any other VR headsets before so I don't have anything to compare to, so it might just be the industry standard that I'm not aware of. But if it is I can't read any text that's smaller than 14pt font, and when I'm playing games it's like sony genuinely installed a grate in between my eyes and the screen. I just asked how much better the screendoor effect is on the rift s is because I wanted to know if it would be worth the upgrade because currently, the screendoor effect on the PSVR is completely ruining my immersion in games.
@@mechanicalmonk2020 you have to enable to Public Beta Channel. you have to be patient with stuff like these. it was out for barely a month. now everything has been fixed. I just used sniper with 4X scope. it was just as accurate as my other vr headsets with base stations
@@JhustineProvido that's literally what I did. It didn't change anything. I'm being patient. I just don't want to own the device while I'm being patient in case it still doesn't work for me and I get stuck in RMA hell.
@Danny Vercetti my specific problem wasn't related to what 1.39 fixed. If your old unit worked fine overall but just had slightly janky tracking or made shooters difficult to play then 1.39 will help you. My issues were more in line with the hardware issues thrill has
Dig your video. I love my Rift S. It’s my first VR headset. I also needed help with a technical issue with my Rift S which was a simple fix. Tech support for oculus is awesome. Big big thumbs up for that.
I'm a CV1 and Rift S owner. Two points that made the Rift S a million times better for me was the usability of it, both in simplicity of setup and comfort. I use my VR headsets in a dedicated space but the need for so many USB resources always caused problems. The clarity in resolution, reduced screen door effect, and larger sweet spot makes a big difference. But the largest improvement for me personally is in comfort. I have a flatter wider face and the original Rift pinched the sides of my head. The new design is significantly more comfortable. I would highly recommend this headset for anyone in a similar situation. The Quest even though about the same size as the original Rift fixed this problem by having a soft flex frame.
Thanks for an honest review, Anybody taking a review serious by an unboxing and first impression is not too smart. People should base their decision with a blogger who has spent ample time using the unit, not by the agreed upon going gossip
Great review, I am glad you had the time with it to dig in. For being the move it was for current CV1 owners I wish there were less bugs but overall It will certainly be my main HMD now
Thank you for the well done comparison between the headsets. As a CV1 owner, I’m having the same reservations about the knob on the back, I already feel it “skipping” a few gears when loosening. No headphones, just a terrible decision, taking off with exterior headphones is more annoying than fiddling with the original’s arms. I do like the visual clarity when in virtual desktop, it’s amazing, and one of my favorite things about the S. I don’t feel when in games it’s that’s big of a graphical difference, but text is definitely easier to read. Drawing a bow was an issue for me, and when in From Other Suns, messing with the pad on your wrist is pretty bad. Guns close together did give me a slight issue. Not playing in a dark room is annoying, but I get it, cameras. Maybe some of these can be patched out, I have a few weeks for them to figure it out.
I tried the S at a friends house and am planning on getting one next week, hopefully I don't run into any issues because without them it's almost a perfect headset for me
@@firestrikebs I have mine now, and I've had a lot of people try it out with radically different ipd's and they all seem to see perfectly fine without needing to adjust anything
After a couple of months of use and becoming better at beat saber, I had to tape the headset. I wear glasses and can’t put the headset close enough to my face, to prevent it from shaking on expert+. Without the tape it shakes so much it becomes hard to see the blocks. The tape tilts/pulls the headset towards my nose. And yes I tightened the the halo strap until I got a headache, it didn’t prevent the shaking. Now my rift s looks like s**t but it works great. :)
Entirely agree. Lots of naysayers (typically have not tried the S I find) but when you see an S versus your CV1 it's a big step up. I have now sold my day 1 CV1 since the Rift S. it's a world away. Like you, Index on the way but this is the current best headset.
For anyone wondering, the purple blinking lights at 7:06 were the ultraviolet signals that are being sent to the tracking things. For some reason ultraviolet can be seen on camera.
Moosey I was thinking the EXACT same thing. I’m guessing if they weren’t able to rectify the tracking issues with inside-out, using constellation could be the fall-back? th-cam.com/video/2Ax2Q6zPevo/w-d-xo.html
Just a note about the tracking. Since the update a few months ago, the tracking close to the face has been massively improved. Edit: so has the software for tracking what happens out of reach of the cameras, like behind the head or back. It's pretty much on par with lighthouse/external tracking
FYI windows has settings that power down some of your PC s USB ports, To change this Right click windows icon in task bar, Click device management, Double click human interface devices(or usb devices) Double click each USB port separately Click the tab on the far right (power management?) Uncheck top box, and move on to next port repeat on each port This may help some if not all USB issues, This is how I got my Vive camera to work again, even though your power and HDMI is still connected if u remove the USB the hmd powers down, this fixs alot of issues with most hmds imo It helped me did, lemme know if it helps you guys!!!??
Oh dang, I must have missed it! 🙃 Any hoot just trying to spend that news since it's not just a rift thing, Wander if the 1903 update thing had something to do with this option being on and screwing stuff up I like your videos, and your voice really voices your feelings in your opinions, if that shit makes any sense 👍
I had no option but to use my corsair void pro headset with the Rift S, I don't get sound in oculus home or oculus bought games, turns out it's an issue with 1903 windows 10 update, and waiting for a fix for it, but I'm happy with my Rift S overall, it's serving me well.
I disagree, yea you have less SDE and better Resolution with Rift S, but FOV is greater, and colors with better dark levels CV1 still rules. If you don't mind external sensors CV1 still a better VR hmd. If CV1 is VR 1.0 I would say even with inside out tracking, other cons makes Rift S a VR 0.8 hmd from my point of view.
@@gurisler3622 And the FOV is basically the same. I think if your IPD is under 65, its slightly bigger. If its over 65, its smaller. Either way the FOV sucks on both headsets and you feel like you're wearing a scuba diva mask on both.
I've had mine for about 4 months and I've had nothing short of a blast of a time with it. It's tracking, from what I found, was so good that even when my controllers were BEHIND me, I still got semi accurate tracking. The thing can take a hell of a beating too, punching walls, hitting your head on your desk (repeatedly) and even tripping on the chord more times than I'd like to admit. In short, highly recommended as a first buy, but not the right choice if you're looking for upgrading in the near future.
One of my concerns with my purchase was definitely audio, since the idea of fitting an audio headset over *another headset seemed like to much on my head. Yet, a good ways into the setup and initial testing, I had forgotten that I hadn't actually set up my audio. In other words, it was indistinguishable from the audio of my previous headset, PSVR. I know a lot of the complaints coming are coming from CV1 --> Rift S users, but as someone coming from PSVR, the audio is absolutely fine to me.
As a first time VR user, this blew me away. It was better than I thought. I didn't mind the built in "headphones". As long as Im in a quiet room, it does the job well enough. Still looking for some decent earphones though. Tracking post-update is amazing, Im shocked how well it works now. Screen is sharp and clear. My only gripe is the FoV, but I shortly forget about it when fully immersed into games.
for those wondering about iPD if you have used or tried out a PSVR its the exact same system only difference is the rift S has a lower refresh rate and has a higher resolution. if you didn't have problems playing on the psvr you won't have issues with the rift S.
I have a CV1 and just bought a Rift S at best buy to try it out. Compared to the CV1 the visuals are clearer with fewer "god rays" and a wider "sweet spot" for looking through the lens, however color contrast is still better on CV1 due to being OLED vs LCD. I'll say I like the visual experience in the new S better overall and the setup is easier/more convenient without the external sensors, however I do find everything else besides these two points to be slightly worse than the CV1. I like the weight and feel of the CV1 controllers slightly better, the CV1 headset is noticeably lighter and still slightly more comfortable to me, and in the later levels of RoboRecall I could notice the tracking performing slightly worse in intense/high paced situations. The integrated audio in the S is also very disappointing vs the excellent integrated earphones on the CV1. Trying to make a pair of headphones work on the S was cumbersome and I don't like earbuds compared to around or on ear headphones. Strange for me to say this but the older CV1 with the slightly outdated visual experience is still a better overall package than the Rift S in my opinion. I'll be returning the Rift S later today.
I have had this head set for about a week now and i'm enjoying it so far my only gripe is I was having a battery drain issue on my left controller but a quick software update fixed that! Great review
I have an oculus rift, and after looking at this review, i think i will just wait until there are more significant advances in VR headsets before i buy a new one
Got my Rift S, tried it for 5 days and here’s what I think. I don’t like it in my opinion, because no IPD adjustment makes it VERY limited to users. Comfort is another thing, it’s hard to get a perfect fit on your head. I returned my Rift S today, and I’m now going to wait for the Valve Index to be available and purchase that instead.
When it was as close as it could get it was either equal, or slightly slightly higher, but hardly noticeably unless I put both on back to back. I also had the thin VR cover on my cv1, so I actually get a slight a slightly higher FOV on it anyways
Never had an issue with my original rift tracking or anything else ,touch wood, think I will stay as I am until the cv2.Too many ticks on my minus list, can’t play in the dark,I always play in the dark late at night when everyone is in bed as the light will annoy them,I have a full time job! The ratchet thing on the back, got a few bike helmets with the same design and half of them have broken ratchets. The controllers have the rings sticking out more and they are cheaper plastic so I can see myself hitting the wall and breaking them also the vibration is weaker. The lower refresh rate I’m sure I will notice it,I use stream vr to track I’m at 90hz as much as possible. The worse tracking,I play Skyrim vr with a bow and arrow and I’m sure the tracking will not see my hands. The worse audio,I play beatsabre and Rez a lot! The resolution is almost the same just more pixel fill so text is clearer but my racing games will still be unclear in the distance Ahhhh never mind.
My Rift S just came in yesterday, and it was a massive upgrade over the Lenovo Explorer I have. The screen, sweet spot, and hand tracking are all lightyears ahead. I do miss the flip up display, but it is what it is. I did have a weird issue where it wouldn't show me the passthrough camera to set up my guardian. I guessed and drew it blindly, then once I was done with the tutorial, I re-configured the guardian and the passthrough worked.
How are the colours? I'm a Lenovo owner and I'm reaching the limit of my patience with the washed out blue green colour and the hideous tracking. Considering changing to the S but am holding off until the Cosmos price is announced. I heard the lenses are good, having a much wider sweet spot.
I use my Rift S for Sitting games such as SIm Racing so touch controllers are not an issue with me. I got the Rift S cause of the small bump in clarity that I see with the unit. With an IPD of 60 had no problem with the fixed IPD the Rift has. So it is my daily VR headset until I decide to go to a higher resolution headset. Right now I have a GTX-1080 GPU and works very well with the Rift S. I would have to get a new GPU going with the higher end VR headsets. I will wait and see what VR headsets look like at the end of 2019. Plus with the Rift S I wanted to see what LCD lenses look like, now I know.. Thanks for your review.
I had one yesterday and honestly after hearing so much negativity about the onboard speakers, I was surprised at how good they were. They seem to be precise in audio direction and allow for you to hear anything happening around you irl so you can hear someone speak etc. I’m sure other pc vr has better audio but I’ve not felt the need to plug in my headphones at all.
I was a little disappointed that it was maximum volume out of the box, but for most things I've played it was fine. I felt it had good directionality, while still being able to hear my dog's nails on the bare floor so I don't trip/step on her.
It should be noted that if you need the Displayport to Mini Displayport adapter, use a third party one that has a wire. the one that comes with the headset is rigid, and prone to breaking.
honestly, I wouldn't upgrade from my rift to the s. It feels like a step backwards at some points to me. Especially with the headphones and tracking. The tracking on my rift is great haven't had a single problem with it. up until now from the headsets I've used I'd stick to my rift or upgrade to the index.
It feels weird watching this now nowing that there is a stand-alone headset with better resuloution than all the most popular headsets at the time this video was released. And also, this video isn’t super old either, it’s not like watching a WII U review or a PS3 review. It was literally less than 2 years ago. VR is evolving so fast, it’s mind blowing
It honestly is. In the next 5 years we're probably going to have full body tracking for standalone vr and much better games. I'm really excited for the future of VR!
I tried the Rift S and I didn't like it. I didn't even hold on to it for a full week it's just not the same experience I'm used to. The native resolution is better than the CV1 but the overall VR experience with the Rift S is a lot worse to me.
Nice little review, I genuinely agree with all your points; but I do have a little gripe about the tracking. You go from saying it's never messed me up to saying well it's a least a bit more consistent to don't do this or you will lose tracking.
Well, I'll word it a little easier to digest for you. The tracking is more consistent. I play games better with it. ALL you have to do is don't put your hands behind your back.
For the tracking issues, also go into your device manager and turn off the "allow my computer to turn off this device to save power" for USB3 and anything USB oculus related.
@@ThrillSeekerVR Shoot, I haven't had much time to play since putting in the fix, but I had a few hours of good playing, hope it doesn't come back for me.
They are sold out everywhere due to the virus! Finally got the money saved to get one...really hope I can get it soon. Been wanting to get into VR for years now.
Just recently got oculus rift s haven’t really come across problems besides for the occasional screen blackout every once in a while but confident that oculus will provide rift s users with a firmware update to fix the problems😌
Nice review. Thanks. But for sure it is not an upgrade nor downgrade from CV1. It jas some pros and cons. Also it is not cheap either considering Quest has a snapdragon835, batteries, physical IPD and better oled displays, this thing should have been no more than $299 even $249. However the answer is that logo 😁. This is not a headset for CV1 users. But a good one for any new VR users with a 6x IPD.
The halo is there because it is way more comfortable. My kids actually want to play VR now, the CV1 was too heavy on the front. Sound is fine. Image is a massive upgrade.
The rift s does have some pretty major flaws. Similar to the way your index has a fatal flaws, the rift s simply doesn't last. If you spend a lot of time in vr during a single session your rift s wont make it. I play for hours and hours... and hours on end and now the headset just randomly crashes entirely. I have tried every fix there ever was, dead. The rift s is a great headset when it works, but as with any lenovo product, the long lasting quality simply isn't there.
This is why I wanted to get a Valve Index. The Oculus Rift S and HTC Vive Cosmos have been disappointing to me. Index feels like it brought back everything I love about the original Rift and Vive with proper incremental improvement. Due to what Oculus and HTC did to their successors, the Index feels like the best option. And if you can't afford it, going back to the original Rift or Vive is not a bad option at all. And once the price fluctuates, even the Vive Pro seems better. But, since it's still more than the Index, there is no reason at all to think about it unless it drops to around six hundred for everything.
@@Goodgamer78 Well. Come on. You paid 450 euros for a VR headset. Mainly built for immersion for the price and not a good mic. So it is not that bad. (For the price)
I recently purchased this headset and the hardware is amazing, however I have been experiencing some software issues. The controller tracking issue that you said in the video was a problem for me as well, along with games crashing when the audio output is too loud, constant resets in guardian mode every boot up, resting the oculus app whenever the goggles display black, and issues with steam vr. This is my first Vr experience and I hope this gets fixed trough software updates.
I know this isn't what you want to hear, and I am positive this will get better within a few months with software updates, but the rift S is going back for this problem.
my Rift s got broken in less than 3 mnds of light use , but it is okay a new one is on its way , no question asked just deliver the old one where I bought it and get a new one , but find it strange it just died on me , I have had psvr since launch and it still works perfect
Great review my dude. Here's my take on this headset: I feel like this really had no reason to even exist, and to be completely honest I am definitely not switching from my HTC Vive to this. Firstly, I know they wanted this headset to be extremely cheap, but you still need a somewhat powerful pc to run it, so WHY. NOT. INCLUDE. AN. IPD. ADJUSTMENT! Seriously, you are paying 399 for this and you get a very cheap looking headset that doesn't come with built-in headphones AND it doesn't have an IPD Adjustment, I know that theres software based IPD but software will never be as good as physical IPD Adjustment. For example, if you have an IPD that's very far away from average like me (between 73 - 75 mm) then you are not gonna have a comfortable experience. Another big gripe I have personally is the move from more reliable outside-in sensors to less reliable inside-out, to be honest they could have gone the Valve route and made sensors that plug into a power outlet and had a high fov, but nope. This is especially a let down for me, a very competitive Beat Saber player (#3 in Brazil as of 29/05/2019) as less reliable tracking makes doing complicated, accurate and incredibly fast moves near impossible. The screen is okay but it will never be as vivid as the screen of an HTC Vive. For average people I still think this is not that great of a deal, cheaper build quality compared to the Rift with no built-in headphones and no outside-in sensors for the same price as a Rift is almost a rip-off. Overall this is not good for first time VR players nor for people who have a Rift or HTC Vive, if you want a good VR experience and never played VR before then just buy a Quest! And if you want a PCVR headset then just buy the Rift CV1 or the HTC Vive.
MysterioN I have the HTC vive with wireless adapter , 2 Oculus rift with three sensors each, and now own 2 Oculus Rift S headsets. I have found a few problems with the inside out tracking while playing and have gotten errors while staring the new headsets. The visuals are far better than I expected them to be and actually hate going back to my older rift to play. HTC Vive rarely ever gets used. I’m keeping my Rift S and using my original Rift headsets as a backup if it fails. My biggest complaint is the audio. Terrible audio solution. I would have paid more for that option if they included decent headphones like the original.
This is an absurd comment tbh. The onboard speakers aren’t perfect but I actually prefer them to headphones because it allows directional audio whilst being able to hear people around me. The sensors work more or less flawlessly in my experience. You rarely ever put your hands behind your back in such a way that the tracking fails, fast movements feel fine, and the look isn’t all that considering you put the thing on your face to see inside. The lack of sensors made this perfect for me, I don’t have the room to set up sensors without having an obstruction blocking some of its view. Obviously if you got the vive pro, this isn’t for you. But not everyone wants to drop the same amount for a decent pc on a headset.
Good review, but I don't get it, why is that no audio strap a con ? It's definitely good for me as it : lower the price, makes the headset lighter and less fragile, can be replaced with the audio solution of your choice. Definitely a pair of intra earphones does an amazing job because of the premium quality audio jack output. Actually I would have hate having that audio strap, now if I wanna play table tennis let my ears free with the builtin audio, and if I wanna more some immersive or musical games I just plug my everyday earphones and put the wire in my t-shirt. And if I want to watch movies I switch the virtual output to my PC Headset instead.
I got a rift S (just before discontinued) and really see little difference in image quality between it and CV1 (except blacks are not quite as black). The biggest advantage is ditching the external sensors.
so what did you eventually have to do to fix the problem? im having the same issue but for me it seems to only give me ~3 minutes before it fails and what fixed it temporarily for you didnt do anything for me
I can't use it because of the dang switch to display port. My vr ready computer is now obso-frickin-lete. I have to return it now because of this. I'm so happy right now. As in pissed off
I wanted to hold out for an Index but I'm not sure my current system can handle it. I've got a CV1 and thinking about grabbing the Rift S. Is it much harder on the requirements? My wife won't let me get a new headset and upgrade my pc at the same time. Wondering if the Rift S could get me by for a while. I can run the CV1 with ASW kicking in only once in a while.
System requirements and performance are extremely similar between rift S and Cv1. I think you could get away with running close to min specs on the index, but it won't be the best experience possible. I'd say get on the index reserve list and upgrade the PC slowly until you're called up for your unit.
For the price it's the best starting point for somebody getting into vr as it provides a great display, controllers, robust but simple tracking and unmodded access to the big budget Oculus exclusives and steam games, at $400 it outclasses the more expensive HTC vive in every way short of marginally better tracking for $100 less. Infact if you looking for an alternative the Odyssey by Samsung is the only other HMD still in the fight at this price teir.
They should have included manual IPD adjustment, and also the face piece should be more comfortable, as the plastic part along the bottom edge of the current one digs into your face after a while and becomes uncomfortable. You end up with what I call 'Oculus Face'.
I still don’t see how this is the same price as a full self contained headset with a processor and battery, not to mention higher rez ipd adjustable OLED screens. If it was half the price, reflecting the cheaper plastics, plastic gears and lack of earphones, it might be a compelling option. Kinda expecting the price to drop soon, once everyone who is gonna get a quest has one and the rift S is no longer a threat to the quests sales.
xpeterson resolution, comfort, simple inside out tracking, zero screen door affect, and the touch controllers. Yes you could go to another brand but oculus has created a very dependable lineup of systems and the touch controllers are much better than any of the other ones out there which is my main reason if staying with oculus, aside from being a fan of the company for a long time now.
@@rundownpear2601 Lenovo Explorer, HP WMR Headset (original, not the Reverb), Dell Visor, Acer WMR Headset, Samsung Odyssey, Odyssey + (when its on sale, which is frequent), etc - all offer inside out tracking, 90hz, and many offer higher rez OLED with ipd, all of them for much cheaper... I understand the point made in the video: there's more to a headset than the spec sheet, and I do agree that for now Oculus has the best hand controllers. But from strictly how much it costs Oculus to manufacture the Rift S, there is no way it should cost what it costs. Like I said before, the Quest itself already has tons more in the box than the Rift S does, and thats from the same company. The Rift S is a lenovo product, it should be priced like a lenovo headset, not charge a premium because they managed to put an Oculus logo on it as well IMO.
iv had the same exact tracking issues with windows MR HMD to where the cameras just seem to stop working, sometimes i even had issues to where it didn't know where the floor was and it couldn't calculate height properly , this time around i went for the index, haven't had a single issue. not sure i could ever go back to inside out systems after experiencing how good lighthouse tracking is
Hello guys, I’m thinking of purchasing the Oculus Rift S this weekend and have an IPD of 59.4-60. I was wondering if it will be comfortable and not too blurry for eye strains. I did try out the demo, but since I did the spacewalk I couldn’t really tell if it was blurry, or I was spinning out of control in space.
I bought it at best buy and tried it. Didnt like it honestly returned it 4 days after giving it a shot. Tracking sucked really bad, and the ring on the top of the controller always makes me hit myself in the face. Playing onward n military sims are horrible for tracking. And picking up items feels like a delay, and the sound is so bad. I prefer the original rift honestly Pros: • no sensor easy setup just plug and play no need to set up guardian all the time. • lenses is pretty good Cons: • bad tracking • really blurry in games, ipd adjustments is horrible • headstrap needs more adjustments • sound is horrible no bass either and really low • lost of tracking if too close to your face, so goodluck playing onward and other sims • delays in picking up items.
@@louisgray6350 exactly it may work perfect for you but not perfect for most games. If it's a software issue then they will fix it soon. But I wont rebuy it till they atleast fix it and release better sound. I was having to use a psvr clip on headphones
love the rift s however it hates me i bought a second since the first one died because reasons, and now every time i try to use it it says it's connected but refuses to turn on but when it does it is broken in a infinite loading screen, probably my computer just my luck... can't forget the tracking issue that every time that the controllers vibrate even the smallest bit, they go to the 10th dimension and casually slides 10 ft away uncontrollably after a second they become controllable again making games like pavlov unplayable HELP!!!
Where can I go to try out a Rift S. The IPD adjustment on my Rift always gave confidence that U would enjoy the experience. But if the Rift S doesn't work well with my IPD, then I may have to pass, unfortunately, as I had been looking forward to this for quite some time.
has this issue that was resolved with the tracking system from what gather th tracking system uses AI in a limited degree and perhaps the AI is just buggy at the time this video was released
I think the reason why the Rift S has no audio headsets this time around is because you're often talking to the person inside the Rift, and it can be very difficult to hear what's being said / whats going on outside your VR environment. I think it's a step up actually, more akin to open design headphones. The original did allow you to flip the ear pieces upwards, but they weren't that great, and often didn't click into place very well, at least on the unit I have.
Yeah I understand that, but also understand that if I'm sitting at my PC playing games, I always have headphones on. You'd be at a serious disadvantage in competitive games if you didn't. If I'm playing an immersive vr game I don't really care to hear someone talking in the next room. Yeah, come rob me, I'll prolly be in VR. Lol!
I now the update: Don't bother buying a Rift S since Oculus flipped a switch and made it so a Rift S is almost exactly like a Quest except when you unplug it, it won't work. I put my Rift away and only use Quest with a good link cable. All I need and I'm goo to go with any PCVR game.
i never owned a VR headset and i want to buy one, idk wich one to buy because someone is saying that "oculus is dying" and stuff. HTC Vive is too much money for me and Valve Index is too, but i could buy it but i dont know if its worth the money for my first VR. Please help
Oculus gets a lot of hate because of Facebook, but to say its dying is complete bs! Going by the latest charts it even comes out on top. In the end it comes down to your budget, the pc/console you have or other personal preferences.
Guess what - the display in my Rift S just kinda dies sometimes and I need to unplug the headset and plug it back in for it to work, but then it happens again, but not at the same time as before, kinda like a timer starts whenever I play a game. It seems to be fixed but I doubt that it's completely gone. Certainly a good starter VR headset, but bugs like these makes the Rift S easily replaceable.
I'm torn i really want this headset but the vive cosmos is coming out later this year and im not sure if i should wait for that. The vive cosmos wont have a bottom dead spot since it has 6 sensors and because its HTC it will have a better build quality. But since it's HTC it might cost a whole lot more. If the vive cosmos isnt unreasonable in price i think i will go for that but if it is do you think i should go for this or wait for something better yet not as expensive. Please help me

Better tracking, better resolution, more populated online vr games (ps4 vr games are more of single player games..)

JD Ros how much better is the screen door affect on the rift compared to the psvr? If you say it as a percent that would be helpful.

I just asked how much better the screendoor effect is on the rift s is because I wanted to know if it would be worth the upgrade because currently, the screendoor effect on the PSVR is completely ruining my immersion in games.
they fixed the tracking with the June 28 update :)

@Danny Vercetti my specific problem wasn't related to what 1.39 fixed. If your old unit worked fine overall but just had slightly janky tracking or made shooters difficult to play then 1.39 will help you. My issues were more in line with the hardware issues thrill has
Alright mate you are underrated lol good video
Dig your video. I love my Rift S. It’s my first VR headset. I also needed help with a technical issue with my Rift S which was a simple fix. Tech support for oculus is awesome. Big big thumbs up for that.
whats your IPD?
For being the move it was for current CV1 owners I wish there were less bugs but overall It will certainly be my main HMD now
It's got to be the best headset if you have a backpack computer. or a laptop in a rucksack
Thanks man, you really turned my opinion for the better on this. Your opinions were well informed and well thought out, so thanks.
No problem, I'm glad I could help!
I tried the S at a friends house and am planning on getting one next week, hopefully I don't run into any issues because without them it's almost a perfect headset for me
im worried about the IPD. None of my friends have a rift s so I cant test it
@@firestrikebs I have mine now, and I've had a lot of people try it out with radically different ipd's and they all seem to see perfectly fine without needing to adjust anything
@@Saidriak ok, its just I was scared because on my rift I have to have it on almost the lowest setting
Looking back at these old videos compared to ThrillSeeker's new content.. I can say you've improved so much in just a few years
After a couple of months of use and becoming better at beat saber, I had to tape the headset.
you can buy prescription lenses for the rift s so you dont have to wear glasses while using it
Entirely agree.

I’m guessing if they weren’t able to rectify the tracking issues with inside-out, using constellation could be the fall-back?

its IR (Infrared) light, not UV (Ultraviolet) :)

Just a note about the tracking. Since the update a few months ago, the tracking close to the face has been massively improved.
Edit: so has the software for tracking what happens out of reach of the cameras, like behind the head or back. It's pretty much on par with lighthouse/external tracking
I really like the Rift S the one problem is setting it up has a utter painful amount of problems but once I finally set the it up It works incredibly
Funny story about a day after I wrote this comment my rift s stopped working for like 45 mins and then magically started to work again
FYI windows has settings that power down some of your PC s USB ports,
To change this
Right click windows icon in task bar,
Click device management,
Double click human interface devices(or usb devices)
Double click each USB port separately
Click the tab on the far right (power management?)
Uncheck top box, and move on to next port repeat on each port
This may help some if not all USB issues,
This is how I got my Vive camera to work again, even though your power and HDMI is still connected if u remove the USB the hmd powers down, this fixs alot of issues with most hmds imo

Mine isn't working and I tried what you're saying and they were already all unchecked
I had no option but to use my corsair void pro headset with the Rift S, I don't get sound in oculus home or oculus bought games, turns out it's an issue with 1903 windows 10 update, and waiting for a fix for it, but I'm happy with my Rift S overall, it's serving me well.
I didn’t have any rift s problems I’ve had mine for a few months with about 200 hours in with minimal problems
I agree with you. after using the Quest and Rift S, the CV1 is prehistoric. Its like looking at a 240p screen with how messy it is.
Yep, it's amazing when you go back and forth how much things have changed
There is a very common microphone bug that they refuse to acknowledge or fix, unless you get a wireless headset or mic you risk sounding like a robot.
It's a hardware issue
As a robot, I find your comment extremely racist.
Great review! Glad i waited for the valve index.
@Derek Murray but the balance of the weight must be different with the rings at the bottom instead of the top.
I have had this head set for about a week now and i'm enjoying it so far my only gripe is I was having a battery drain issue on my left controller but a quick software update fixed that! Great review

If you can afford an Index, why didn't you get one to begin with?
TheBongoMan Index was out of stock and I wanted to try something more affordable
DragonPixels lol have fun waiting another 6 months
Sami Hookings I have had my Valve Index for 2 months already, you’re late brother
When you pushed the headset closer to your eyes, did that match the original rift FOV , or did that enable an increase?
When it was as close as it could get it was either equal, or slightly slightly higher, but hardly noticeably unless I put both on back to back. I also had the thin VR cover on my cv1, so I actually get a slight a slightly higher FOV on it anyways
@@ThrillSeekerVR I don't get how people can use thiner interfaces with the rift. My eyes with the original already touch the lenses sometimes lol
It's a great headset. but it had had a lot of software issues and can really take up a lot of your time getting it to work
It should be noted that if you need the Displayport to Mini Displayport adapter, use a third party one that has a wire. the one that comes with the headset is rigid, and prone to breaking.
Sweet! Was not aware of this, thank you!
honestly, I wouldn't upgrade from my rift to the s. It feels like a step backwards at some points to me. Especially with the headphones and tracking. The tracking on my rift is great haven't had a single problem with it. up until now from the headsets I've used I'd stick to my rift or upgrade to the index.
i got a rift s for christmas, been using it everyday and its a blast
i think its a good starter headset
the quest 2 is better in every aspect and doesnt have hardware issues which stop the thing from functioning *cough* power issues *cough*
I'm really excited for the future of VR!
update 1.39 can now track all around you.
I tried the Rift S and I didn't like it. I didn't even hold on to it for a full week it's just not the same experience I'm used to. The native resolution is better than the CV1 but the overall VR experience with the Rift S is a lot worse to me.
Same I returned mine too
@@jayp7103 I'm sticking with the CV1 for now. I was thinking about trying out the quest but I think I'll just wait not really sure yet.

I liked this review. It was very to the point. My only question is blacks and color saturation?
The halo is there because it is way more comfortable. My kids actually want to play VR now, the CV1 was too heavy on the front. Sound is fine. Image is a massive upgrade.
The rift s does have some pretty major flaws. Similar to the way your index has a fatal flaws, the rift s simply doesn't last. If you spend a lot of time in vr during a single session your rift s wont make it. I play for hours and hours... and hours on end and now the headset just randomly crashes entirely. I have tried every fix there ever was, dead. The rift s is a great headset when it works, but as with any lenovo product, the long lasting quality simply isn't there.
nice one thrill!
I sold the Rift S and purchased the quest 2, probably the best decision I've made in VR gaming.
My Rift S gets here tomorrow!
IS THERE A MICROPHONE ON RIFT S??? This is strangely something I have not yet seen mentioned on any video. Necessary for VR chat type games.

I also get the freezing of the cameras, repairing worked for 4hrs until it started doing it again :(
my Rift s got broken in less than 3 mnds of light use , but it is okay a new one is on its way , no question asked just deliver the old one where I bought it and get a new one , but find it strange it just died on me , I have had psvr since launch and it still works perfect
I wonder why they didnt use the 1440 x 1440 LCDs that WMR headsets used. I'm guessing that the Go/Rift S display has better colors and contrast?
It's just a lot cheaper to manufacture.
Both an advantage and disvantage Sadly. Although I'm happy for your sake. I use the quest with link btw. Planning on getting the index early 2021

Kinda expecting the price to drop soon, once everyone who is gonna get a quest has one and the rift S is no longer a threat to the quests sales.
xpeterson I have had both a cv1 and the rift s. Rift s is definitley a big improvement but not really an upgrade. Definitely worth the price though.
Matt Falletts what makes it worth the price? What components in there justify $400, again considering what other headsets offer for cheaper.
xpeterson resolution, comfort, simple inside out tracking, zero screen door affect, and the touch controllers. Yes you could go to another brand but oculus has created a very dependable lineup of systems and the touch controllers are much better than any of the other ones out there which is my main reason if staying with oculus, aside from being a fan of the company for a long time now.
xpeterson and not many other headsets offer the same stuff for cheaper, not that I can think of?
I prefer the original rift honestly
Pros:
• no sensor easy setup just plug and play no need to set up guardian all the time.
• lenses is pretty good
Cons:
• bad tracking
• really blurry in games, ipd adjustments is horrible
• headstrap needs more adjustments
• sound is horrible no bass either and really low
• lost of tracking if too close to your face, so goodluck playing onward and other sims
• delays in picking up items.
This seems like a quite biased pro and cons list. I wouldn't take it with a grain of salt.
@@louisgray6350 everyone has their own opinion. And I'll say not worth the upgrade
@@louisgray6350 but I do recommend trying it at bestbuy for yourself.
I own it. Works perfect for me. Its not really meant to be an upgrade, just a slightly better device for new vr users.
I know some best buy's have demos, and I heard that a few Microsoft stores have the Rift S on demo
Dont worry about it too much. I've had many people try mine and nobody complains about the IPD.
if your in the uk just buy one from the shop. you have 14 days to take back and they have to give you a refund.
has this issue that was resolved with the tracking system from what gather th tracking system uses AI in a limited degree and perhaps the AI is just buggy at the time this video was released
They could have just used the same display, lens and inside out tracking on the Quest, and put it into the rift S.
I agree 100%!
But tracking is worse on the quest and isn’t the resolution on the Rift S better?
@@monke5198 the resolution on Rift S is worse very slightly but the lenses and software super sampling is better
All I need and I'm goo to go with any PCVR game.
what game is that at 4:24?
right now would be the best time to order one because on the oculus website its going for 300 dollars right now
i never owned a VR headset and i want to buy one, idk wich one to buy because someone is saying that "oculus is dying" and stuff. HTC Vive is too much money for me and Valve Index is too, but i could buy it but i dont know if its worth the money for my first VR. Please help
If you have a ps4, get the psvr, it works great and it’s cheaper than those expensive brands headsets
@@thelob5429 only reason id say no to this is because the limit on games for PSVR
Im basically in your shoes, though im getting the headset in the next few weeks. This review helped with the decision
Oculus gets a lot of hate because of Facebook, but to say its dying is complete bs!
Going by the latest charts it even comes out on top.
In the end it comes down to your budget, the pc/console you have or other personal preferences.
You can use oculus with Steam VR
Hi thank for the review i was wondering as someone who never owned a vr headset should i buy the rift s or i should look at something else?
The rift s is awesome, and will provide you with a good experience for sure. Take a look at wmr if you're interested as well.
@@ThrillSeekerVR How would you compare this to a lenovo explorer considering youve used one? Im interested in how they compare in SDR and tracking
I know this reply is month’s late, but the Rift S makes the Lenovo Explorer seem like toy binoculars.
I've had 2880 x 1440 (1440 x 1440 per eye) for ages. Granted it is DELL VR. Maybe time for a resolution downgrade and a tracking upgrade
Just wondering, how responsive is Oculus to help requests? I am considering getting this headset since I'm in a small dormitory.
Such as the quest 2
power issues, its a major issue on the rift s because it only uses 1 usb for power, not 2.
Can the oculus rift s the digital storm lynx work together
I'm torn i really want this headset but the vive cosmos is coming out later this year and im not sure if i should wait for that. The vive cosmos wont have a bottom dead spot since it has 6 sensors and because its HTC it will have a better build quality. But since it's HTC it might cost a whole lot more. If the vive cosmos isnt unreasonable in price i think i will go for that but if it is do you think i should go for this or wait for something better yet not as expensive. Please help me
where did you get your eye cover thing for the rift?
just ordered rift s!
Nice! You'll enjoy it for sure!
