Couple of things I learned. The hoses cannot go up.... There's not enough pressure in the system to defy gravity and push the frothy oil in a vertical direction. Which is the reason the factory system is either horizontal out the head bolts or down into the intake. Checking it daily is way too often it takes months for that to accumulate. I only change my catch can on 5,000 mi oil changes now and there will be about 3/4 of an inch of frothy crap in it after 5,000 mi.
