Why You Should NOT Stay at The Best Las Vegas Hotels (Unless Comped)

  • In this video we a discussing some travel tips and advice to help you stretch your budget further when you are here on vacation in Las Vegas, particularly when it comes to looking at the best hotel options available. Many people, especially first timer visitors (aka. Vegas Virgins), come to Las Vegas, and really love the high end resort casino properties. Although these hotels are beautiful, there's only so many high end customer clientele looking for a luxury room to stay at, whether on the strip, off the strip or in downtown near Fremont St. Your dollar will go a lot further if you get a suite at a mid-level hotel property than if you were to get the cheapest room at a place like Cosmopolitan, Bellagio, Aria, Wynn, Encore, etc. Also, you can enjoy many of the great amenities at high end properties like restaurants, pool parties, night clubs, dat clubs, lounges, spas, etc. without actually having to stay at that property. Now, I do no recommend staying at a place that seems to cheap or run down or sketchy. You can find a nice middle ground where you can have a quality room and enjoy other aspects of the hotel like free parking, lower or no resort fees, better comps, etc. without necessarily having to stay in a property than many people considered to be the best in Las Vegas.

Hi Jacob. We always stay at these hotels, New York, Luxor, MGM or Mirage. All we do is a upgrade and it only costs maybe 20 more a night and we've been very satisfied with everything. To us it's worth it just to spend a little more.

Jacob I have been doing exactly what you said for over 30 years when I go to Vegas. Back in the day, for me it was the Frontier the Riviera the Hilton. Now today it's been the Sahara, The Flamingo, and the Westgate. You're right I'm out and about why spend big bucks on a room when you're not going to be there as much.

Awesome video Jacob!!! I partially agree with you. You should be flexible with where and when you stay in Vegas. You should compare multiple options when planning your trip. You should combine hotel and airfare. I am coming to Vegas on September 12 and I am staying at the Venetian for 4 nights. I am bringing 2 friends with me. The total cost for the trip with resort fee included is 1,817.38. This includes 2 hotel rooms and airfare for 3 people. I did not use any points or comps to get this deal.

@@armin2changs For me, Bellagio rooms were a disappointment. Their lobby and garden are awesome, but their rooms not so much. Not that the rooms are bad, but they are not awesome. Of course, try out the Bellagio room and see for yourself. But for a luxury room experience I would recommend The Wynn or The Pallazzo. It helps if you have the Amex Platinum or the Chase Sapphire reserve credit cards, as those cards also give you extra perks like free breakfast and early check in/late check out if you book through their fine/luxury hotels program.

One "hack" is always use the resort's player card when playing machines. They will send you "special" offers and comps, especially at the nicer hotels. Often with these specials, you can stay at nicer hotels for a comparable mid-level price.

Booking ahead is fine, it is great if you can be a little versatile on the exact days. Usually Sundays thru Thursday nights rock. If you are in town for more than three nights and can rent a car for at least one afternoon, Red Rock loop is a must.

Always looked at a room just being somewhere to stagger into at daft o'clock so why spend ridiculous money on one especially when its costing £700+ to fly from UK its expensive enough as it is. Theirs about three of them off paradise rd alone, all have restaurants to include a bar. But if I had to fly in to Vegas, I wouldn't mind Treasure island. Plus no resort fees or any other hidden fees that you would find on the strip. Usually for me I leave the hotel room late, probably around noon, and I'm an early morning guy so I like to stay in a very comfortable room. Marriott does a good job everytime.

Jacob, one you might add is the Signature @ MGM {the towers behind/North of MGM. While actually not on the strip, they do connect to the strip thru MGM Grand. The best thing about the Signature is that most {all?} rooms have a full kitchen {full size refrigerator/stove/microwave} so if you are staying for a few days, you can save on breakfast and it is a great place to store the leftovers from the fancy dinner. We come to LV 6-8 times a year and usually stay at the Signature since buying drinks at the local Smith's is a lot cheaper than paying $4.00 for a Coke. Plus if you are a plane junky like me, get the balcony overlooking the McCarran and watch the planes at night.

For ME, I completely agree. I care about a clean room that's as quiet as possible. (Quiet is hard to find downtown.) All I do is sleep there. Paying for any other luxury is a waste of money. Now, I don't have the budget that some people do in Vegas. I'm not a huge gambler, so I don't get a ton of comps.

I stay at the Wynn or the Bellagio every time. My favorite restaurants are in the hotel so I don't have to leave the property to eat, there's not a bunch of annoying kids like at the cheaper places and it's a better atmosphere all around. I don't spend a lot on gambling or on partying so a $300/night room is well worth it.

I started out at Luxor but found being a large fish in a small pond has paid off nicely. Go to places The Orleans Rio and my all-time fav. Green Vally Ranch and Red Rock. I like being off the strip as the strip for me is WAY too many people and I get better comps off.

One time I was in Vegas for a conference at the Convention Center. The room at the main hotel was on the order of a Truck Motel Stop quality. And that was the main hotel for a major conference which usually happens at Caesar's or MGM Grand or Paris at a discounted rate of $219/night. I went online, found a 2 room suite at the Flamingo for $139. Got the rate because it was a same-day rate for a room that was going to be empty. Best conference room I ever had. Came with a full kitchen with dining area, whirlpool tub, living room area with a couch and 2 large chairs, desk space for 2 people in addition to the large bedroom and large bath with 2 sinks. You can live a lot better when traveling on company business without breaking the bank.

I had to stay at one strip property with well known Nevada name in gaming, I let you figure it out. The room I got didn't come with shin guards & the food was left over banquet. Many of my counter parts said the same thing, lousy food, couldn't wait to get out of their system. On the morning of my departure, I ate at another, bigger resort up the street. In subsequent trips to LV, I've stayed at the Strat (no); TI, impression was mixed - lines; I did at the Tuscany & found it more to my liking. I didn't encounter lines at the coffee shop, large rooms, no need for shin guards, parking is outside & not covered it has been a few years since there last, resort fee at the time was about $15. Best to just not go by the name but what suits you, room size; avoiding lines at the elevator etc.

I came to Vegas a couple months ago with family for my birthday. My brother who was organizing the trip refused to stay anywhere but Wynn. Anything like Luxor is considered complete trash to him. While the hotel was nice and I had some good food there, I thought the experience was excessive. We were only in the room for a few hours a day so I saw no point to the expense. Due to the extreme heat we also spent more time driving due to being on the end of the strip.

You should have discussed more of the options away from the Strip and DT. Red Rock is probably my favorite. But, there are the Station Casinos, Cannery and other big chain hotels without a casino. Granted, you may have to rent a car. But, it still widens your options. Especially, where to eat at a bargain. If you're into table games, the casinos on the Strip tend to have higher limits with the minimum bets of at least $25. Newbies with a tight budget would be better off away from the Strip and DT for those reasons.
