I like how baby always wears with sunglasses when doing a job but they’re broken by the end of the film, forcing him to see the crimes and violence around him. The glasses are my favorite part of his costume design.
I want to point out that most scenes where it involved debra and baby is a lot saturated, making the moment more lively and expressive. I just find that really sweet. It tells me how much baby feels lively around debra.
Everyone's saying "amazing editing," but I just wanted to take a second to acknowledge the incredible decision to use Baby's shades @1:20 to contrast the light and dark duality of Baby's existence. It's amazing bc you're literally using his ever-present sunglasses as the two opposing lenses through which he views the world. It's only punctuated by the deliberate inclusion of clips like @7:52, where one lens of the sunglasses has been removed, literally embodying the shift from his time in the darkness to his future in the light. 10/10 great job
You could also interpret that lense breaking in that scene as him truly seeing things as they are to the point where he makes important decisions based on his newly clarified view of the world
Great point. Mabey that's why Doc protected him. His dark shades also mirror things from the outside so It's a visual metaphor for how perhaps Doc see's himself in Baby or at least see's a reflection of himself(quite literally lmao) so he empathises and wants to protect that innocence. when one lense is shattered in the shopping mall chase scene it shows not only does he have a newer clarified view of the world (as another commented on this thread suggests) and see how dangerous his situation is, but also his loss of innocence in the crime world.
it's actually kind of funny how well both Baby Driver and most works by Shakespeare fit in the art period of the english renaissance - both discuss the complex principles of humanism.
As a nerdy film student, it was super refreshing to see a video essay dealing with costume design in a movie! It's such an important aspect that people gloss over so frequently when critiquing and analyzing movies. Like, I could practically write a book about the costume design for a movie like Pacific Rim (And I mean, down to the length of characters' pants. I'm not even joking - Newt's jeans are cuffed because they're too long, while Hermann's pants are clearly a few inches too short, in order to emphasize that they are opposites.) I'd love to see more videos like this. It's something that is so crucial but gets so easily lost in a visual medium, particularly one that is so dominated by CGI nowadays. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! Costume design is an elegant art, that can really make a huge difference for a film. Currently I have no plans of covering the costume design of another film, but I'm sure it's something I'll come back to at some point, I like to jump around on subjects between videos though to keep things fresh, but there's definitely plenty of other videos deserving of their own video like this.
I think Baby is dressed in a way similar to Han Solo as Han is known as a scoundrel, smuggler or aka criminal, but when he's needed he can do the right thing, like in Empire in the Hoth base when Imperial attacked. Also a little reference to the Taoist/Buddhist philosophy of "The Yin and Yang". As you had said, Edgar Wright is a master in subtlety and details. Too bad he didn't managed to direct a Marvel film, hope Marvel would allow him to do at least one of the films...
It's entirely possible! Funny enough Ansel was one of the contenders for the role of young Han in the new SW movie. He almost did Ant-Man but left over creative differences, they really don't seem open to letting talented people do their own thing within the cinematic universe, which is a shame, I think an Edgar Wright superhero movie would be incredible.
Solid point. Maybe there's also a relatively simple yet blatant statement of white under, black over. Exactly what was said in the video, Baby's core becomes darker and we see that through his t-shirt. However, towards the end he's not wearing that black waistcoat much I believe. Perhaps that was his visage, his criminal character
I could say the same thing to you! You kidding me man? Your last video was straight fire, like eating a hot pocket while chewing Big Red in the center of a volcano FIRE.
Krom the Assasin Stroking each other's egos. Praise shower. Overboard with the compliments. There are so many ways to say that without going inappropriate.
Film Radar Baby and Deborah both wear black and white like prisoners because they are both trapped. Baby is trapped in criminal activity. Deborah in the conventional slum of adulthood responsibilities.
Hot Fuzz is the pinnacle of his achievement, but Baby Driver is also brilliant. Hot Fuzz gets points automatically just for being SO jam-packed with references, call-backs, and punchlines. Have you ever fired two guns while jumping in the air? No. *Have you ever fired one gun while jumping in the air?*
Baby driver was my favorite movie this year. Everyone was so good but it also made realize how good of an actor Jamie foxx is. Also John Hamm is really hot.
A C Yes Jamie Foxx totally killed it ! And his death scene was frickin hilarious and came very unexpected. It's especially funny, if you think of him telling Baby that sometime he would have blood on his hands.
"He has such respect for every craft that goes into filmmaking." - That's the most accurate thing ever written about him, I'm doing my masters about Scott Pilgrim and I'm gonna quote you on that. Congratulations on pin pointing something like that, great video also.
Saw this because Edgar Wright himself shared it on twitter! Loved the video and am a big fan of the movie myself. My girlfriend loves it the most of all of Wright's movies because she absolutely loved the thrilling ride, myself I think I would put shawn of the dead as my favourite, though I have not seen at world's end in years, so I might be in for a surprise when rewatching that one.
I'm still in shock that that actually happened, he's one of my favorite filmmakers of all time, hasn't made a bad film yet! The World's End really grew on me the more I watched it, after a first viewing I was disappointed, I didn't like it nearly as much as I had liked Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, but it gets better every time I see it, it's a really lovely film.
One example i LOVE - I loved how Jon Hamm goes from dark neutral lighting to Red once his gf dies, (which echoes back her words - when he gets mad he sees only red). The moment she dies he’s leaned beside a broken red taillight as in it’s breaking out, and then through the movie he’s usually highlighted in red to show his rage and “Seeing Red” towards baby.. i thought that was brilliant.
Amazing analysis, the more you point it out the more meaningful it seems! I found it interesting that Darling is mostly colored in purple, a color usually associated with royalty and wealth. At the beginning of the film she's dressed in a pastel purple fur so you really get the feeling that she's something to be charished, someone worthy of Buddy giving up everything and doing the whole Bonnie & Clyde thing for, she is pretty nice to Baby and is fairly likable until Bats grounds them in reality. After it's revealed that she's just a stripper he ran away with she switches to a darker plum purple that she's eventually killed in. It kinda feels like Buddy's subsequent spiral resulted from him resisting the fact that he made the wrong decision after his crimes caught up with him the first time. I kinda wish the female characters in this movie had more depth in general but I still think it's an interesting analysis.
I watched Baby Driver at least 4 times while making this video, and each viewing made me love it more. While my personal pick for Edgar Wright's best has to be "Hot Fuzz", I'm curious what you guys think! What were your thoughts on Baby Driver? How does it compare to Edgar Wright's other films? Let me know! If you enjoyed this video, please consider becoming a Patron to help fund future content! www.patreon.com/filmradar
Oh man, you're in for a treat when you watch his other movies, they're just as awesomely made and entertaining. There's a lot going for it, it has a superb script, great performances, a kickass soundtrack and some of the best car chases of the last decade, but yeah, the costume design goes a long way for making the film better. Glad you liked the video buddy :)
I finally saw Baby Driver yesterday and man it was disappointing. I was waiting for the record to scratch and the Edgar Wright genius to burst through and reveal itself but it never happened. It was just cliched scene after cliched scene that in the end amounted to nothing unique or interesting in any way. Sure it was made better than all the films its the same as, but it's still no where near as creative as Wright's previous films, so even stylistically it under performs.
Honestly, I'd say to watch it a few times. There are definitely cliched aspects, but I'm not sure why that has to be a bad thing. Every film these days is treading water that's been tread before. There's no new ground to break in traditional visual storytelling, so we're going to see certain tropes arise. But every beat of the film is driven by the soundtrack, it plays out almost like a musical but with kickass rock music. The car chases were all done for real, with even the real actors inside the car. There are details hidden throughout, and just tons of great use of symbolism and humor and man I just love this film. Granted, rewatching it might not change your opinion, but I'd say it's worth a try before solidifying your opinion.
That's one I still haven't seen unfortunately, but I really look forward to seeing Casey Affleck's performance, I loved him in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford!
While your analysis here is incredible and really opened my eyes up to the stylistic choices that were made, I have to compliment your editing especially. This video is so well put together and it made your points very easy to follow. You have some serious skill in both analysis and editing!
I love movie break-downs like this, I pick up on a lot of foreshadowing and characterizations in shows, but these kinds of videos just get into the plot deeper and pick out the symbols that the film creators use. Really cool video, I enjoyed it!
Thank you for your reply!! This movie was awesome, and I plan on watching all of the director's other works now. This video was totally inspiring! Again thank you for your reply, it's really cool that you connect with your fans! (:
No problem! I couldn't agree more, one of the best I saw this year, you're in for a treat whenever you watch an Edgar Wright film, his movies are fantastic. Thank you for saying so! I always try to respond whenever I can, it's harder than ever these days but I'd say that's a good problem to have :)
This is the first time a youtuber replied to me, and I'm on youtube a lot, so I'm really happy you did! That's I really good problem to have! I hope your channel just keeps growing, I subscribed after watching just a few of your videos, so I'm sure you will keep gaining fans. I'm rooting for you! (:
I've been there before! Too many creators I watch have way too large of audiences to ever notice little old me haha. Thank you so much! I hope so too! And even if I blow up huge some day I'll always try to take the time to respond to awesome people like you :)
Costume design is extremely important within film language. Costume is connected to character, some of the best iconography of a film is often costuming. Even identical uniform costumes are important, sometimes iconic (think of the Storm troopers from Star Wars). I really enjoy your focus on the intricate various aspects of film, keep up the amazing work. I always look forward to your essays. :-)
Totally agree! So many movies would lack the same punch without expert costuming, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Matrix. Thanks Will, means a lot coming from you!
I have a thought on that. Somewhere near the middle of the film, we learn that Darling and Buddy were "normal" folk who led relatively innocent lives (the diner scene where Bats tries to guess their lives). They then started committing small crimes to pay off debts. But, one day when their luck ran out they had to choose between a life of crime (aka a life on the run) or doing time in prison. This B&D couple (Buddy and Darling) chose to run. On the other hand, another B&D couple in the movie faced with nearly the exact same choice at the film's end chose to step on the brakes instead of a life constantly on the run. I think they're both meant to show that everyone always has a choice in the life they want to lead. Or something like that
@@108titan I know this was a year ago but they weren't innocent. Buddy works in wallstreet and had a family but took it all for granted and ran off with Darling his "favorite lapdancer" then led a life of crime.
I think my favorite use of color/costuming in Baby Driver was during the dinner date scene, where Deborah was the only one not dressed in black, symbolizing how she's the most important part of Baby's life. Not only that, she's dressed in yellow, the color that tints Baby's flashbacks, representing his association between Deborah and his mother. Genius stuff
Hey man, that's what movies are all about, getting the audience to connect with the character. I think he'd be pleased that you found him so relatable.
Also worth pointing out that the color coding within the heist crew also indicates team unity. In the first heist, the crew works very well together, and they all wore similarly dark clothes. Contrasting that to the final heist, in which you have almost the exact same cast but the dynamic is very different, the colors don't match nearly as well.
I hate how people gloss over this film and dismiss it as another action/romance cliche. And when I point out the intricacies and the details of his direction, I am me with responses like - "ok?", "Not a big deal". Smh I can't with these people.
This was fantastic! Gave me some insights that I hadn't thought of (especially the Deb-Mom link). I'm aiming to release my video on Baby Driver this Friday :)
Could not agree with you more! It wasn't until my second year studying film that I learnt the importance of production design/costumes in a film. Your video perfectly encapsulates whats it's all about, it goes largely unnoticed but subconsciously will create feelings and connections that other wise would not be as strong. Great video man!
I also really liked the use of colour to communicate Baby's situation, particularly red and blue. When red shows up, things are going well for Baby and he's in control (like the Subaru at at the start of the film, a graffiti heart on the wall in the coffee shop scene changes from grey to red when Debora walks past and the red clothes/record in the laundromat scene) but when Blue shows up, something's going wrong (like the blue police lights, particularly Buddy's police car as well as the blue truck belonging to the 'hero' bystander in the second heist and the two blue cars that Baby uses in the third heist which goes balls up).
Similar to Kurosawa, he gives his characters with distinct movements or traits in order for the audience to distinguish who is who even without introduction.
Edgar Wright is straight up a genius. Baby Driver has been my favourite movie for 3 years now and i have made my family and i rewatch this movie dozens of times. Somehow, we still are finding more and more details and looking at this movie in many different ways each time. it's insane how different my perspective of this movie has changed since the first time i watched it. i hope edgar, and other directors come out with more movies like Baby Driver.
Thank you! There are definitely a lot of us out there, plenty of which are absolutely amazing, if you're looking for more movie channels you can check my sidebar on my channel page, some really solid channels that are worth your time.
I must say as a costume designer myself this world means the world to me. It's awesome to see people appreciating such an underappreciated aspect of film.
Great discussion (as always!) I may have misinterpreted what you were saying around 4 minutes into the video about Baby holding onto the past. Were you suggesting that the reason he becomes involved with Debora is a longing for his mother? If so-SUPER interesting point I never even thought of!
Indeed I was! Also hinted at by the blonde hair, and that the first time he ever sees Debora she's singing. I didn't go fully into that because I thought it strayed from my point, but I definitely think he was missing a caring feminine figure in his life, and she represents a lot of what he misses about his mom(at least that's my interpretation).
Oh man, that's Edgar Wright for you, every scene has so many layers to it, the man is such a hero of mine. DO IT. Especially now that it's out on Blu-Ray.
A fantastic analysis of a brilliant film, videos like this really make me appreciate all the meticulous work that goes into every facet of crafting a movie as detail-centric as this. Great work!
My personal Edgar Wright list: 1. Scott pilgrim vs the world 2. Hot Fuzz 3. Baby driver 4. At Worlds end(or Whatever it’s called) 5. Shawn of the Dead (Don’t care if you disagree)
Great video! I'm so glad Wright made this movie, I think Baby Driver is his most widely accessible movie so far. His work is always so masterful, but always focuses on such a niche genre-mesh or style. The fact he made a shoot-em-up action movie in a time where the genre is so oversaturated, but created a story with heart, different perspectives and characters, and all of his signature wit and style, is really exciting. Hopefully the success of Baby Driver will bring more attention to his other films because he is so damn good at his craft, but it seems like not enough people know it.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE VERY MUCH I’m not really sure why but it’s just really beautifully made. But this analysis of the movie made me even more in love with it!!!! U gained a new subscriber!!!💯
Baby Driver is terrific, and Edgar Wright is one the most talented filmmakers working today if you ask me. Glad you dug the video! And thanks for subscribing!
Thank you so much! Yeah, I feel like they probably went over most peoples, hell, they would have went over mine had I not binged every Edgar Wright interview I could find.
I rarely comment on TH-cam videos, but I had to break my silence to say this is an awesome video and I am shocked it doesn't have more views! Just subscribed, will be binging your channel later.
"because when my buddy sees red..." (darling/monica to baby), refers to the final scene, in which, buddy literally sees red, and inside of the laundromat where debrah and baby are listening to a song, the laundry is the three primary colors, Red, Yellow and Blue.
Honestly, I just didn't care for my analysis of their outfits nearly as much, and I felt it would have hampered the video. I dug into it looking for deeper insight, but all of the best stuff that I found was more centered around Baby and Deborah, and I wanted to keep in only the best of the best. I'm glad you still enjoyed the video regardless!
Finally, someone analyzed character colour coding in this film! I couldn’t get enough of the details in this movie, and you did a fantastic job of assessing these aspects with a gross amount of depth, I really appreciated it. Keep up the solid videos.
Thank you kindly! I love this sort of stuff, and while Baby Driver is hardly the only film to implement that sort of idea, I thought it did it REALLY well.
This was a great and fresh video essay. My top Edgar Wright films woulds would be: 1. Hot Fuzz 2. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World 3. Baby Driver 4. Shaun of The Dead (Was filmed next to my house) 5. The Worlds End
Baby Driver is the only movie that makes me WANT to go to theaters. The initial car chase had him changing gears and with each change the bass from the theater made my HEART VIBRATE. It literally was the most surreal, most amazing experience I have ever had from a movie. That moment set the tone for the film and I WISH more films would take advantage of the theater setting.
Loved your analysis. Usually longer video essays are not that engaging but u managed to make a brilliant 13 min video just discussing the costume design of baby driver.👍
Haha, I've heard that before, he's definitely rubbed off on me since I started making these videos, but I really enjoy his videos so I take it as a compliment, though I have heard it as an insult before XD
Wardrobe in film is a very good way of visual narration, the colors kind of direct the audiences' eyes on where to look. Bats is the most obvious villain from the very beginning, always wearing something red and bold. There is no doubt as you're watching, that character is the obvious threat. The real twist at the end is Buddy's sudden switch into that bad-guy role! Thanks for this insightful take on the movie, i love learning these little details. :)
I hadn't thought of costume design being used to tell such an in-depth story about a character, but this is absolutely amazing and has defenitly changed my view on its importance. Thank you for making the video.
Thank you so much for introducing this new music to me at the end of the video. I appreciate it. It really helps me find the songs I like listening to a lot when the songs used in the video are credited. 🙏
10:14 I particularly like this shot in it's subtlety with the color coding. Buddy is right below a blue sign and surrounded by it's glow, Darling is below a pink painting, bats is positioned such that he is most prominently in contact with the red seats, and Baby is framed by the black window with white shutters. So much detail in this movie
“It ends up saving the film from having to resort to the techniques that a lot of other films use to justify a romance between two characters.” Like chemistry, character development and a sense of true understanding? For me, their romance is what made the movie fall apart. I just didn’t buy it. The writing didn’t support their relationship much at all, beyond him loving the idea of her. Which would’ve been fine if that was intentional. But the moment she decides to give up her normal life to join his life on the run, I just felt confused. It was so unearned, it felt like they barely even knew anything about each other. I knew barely anything about her, much less anything that would help her making that decision make sense. In my opinion, the relationship between him and his deaf father-figure should’ve been the emotional heart of the film, but instead it’s this love story that wound up feeling hollow. It took me out of it completely. This film is technically brilliant, but it’s storytelling is lacking real weight. The visuals and the editing were great, but they weren’t enough to replace essential character-building.
I meant things like a cliche montage, or some lengthy sex scene, or many of the other overplayed scenes that build a film romance. Personally, I totally bought it, they're both young and seeking change. Love doesn't always follow the rules of logic, have you never been in a situation where you barely know someone and there's just this indescribable feeling you have for them? I think it's fair to say neither had ever met anyone like each other before, and they each had a quality that drew them to the other, I personally more than bought it, I loved it. I mean, his relationship with Joe is a fairly significant part of the film, and a great emotional core of the film, just not the only one. Though it's worth mentioning that you're not alone with those complaints, I've seen a lot of people say things that are similar to what you've said, and that's totally fine, not everyone is ever going to like any movie. There are always going to be people going "What the hell guys, it's not THAT good." And that's just the way it is.
I'm not sure if you've seen any of Edgar's other films, but they - like Baby Driver - often have this feeling to them that their world is a little bit fantastical, a little bit ridiculous. This allows some of the more far fetched things that take place to not be so jarring. Early on the movie leads you in with an understanding that you will have to suspend your beliefs a bit with that perfectly choreographed car chase. So in that sense, I think the romance fits into the reality of that world well enough. Though, I can see how that wouldn't be for everyone.
Carlos J Having seen the entire Cornetto trilogy, the essential relationships in all of those movies feel completely fleshed out and earned. The story could become outlandish, the stakes could skyrocket to a galactic level, but the reason those films are great is because the core of each story has well-developed, fleshed out characters with relationships that feel real and that you care about. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost inhabited completely different characters with completely different friendships in every film, and every one of them felt real and lived in. This movie was more grounded, frankly, and where the Cornetto trilogy provided great character building when it had high concepts it could’ve rested on, Baby Driver had a serviceable enough premise with no tangible character build-up to speak of. Considering the amount of time we get to invest in them, the character choices and plot-progression felt mechanical. Which is the last thing a movie built around music should’ve made me feel. I went into the movie hoping to love it. I just couldn’t, sadly. Edgar Wright is a fantastic director, but I’m starting to think Simon Pegg was a huge asset in the writing process. I didn’t feel a heart in this movie. I just heard it beating. Like it was trying to convince me to feel something instead of making me. I could see the sincerity in its attempt at romanticism, but it wasn’t actually there. If this were a film in the Cornetto trilogy, we would’ve had a scene where we see the main lead and the love interest alone in private, being mostly honest with each other about their lives and just enjoying each other’s company in a way that makes it clear that this is the first emotional connection either of them have really had, and the main character’s adoptive father would’ve been actually threatened instead of it being a fake-out and that would’ve been part of the emotional climax. That’s not what happened though. The film took half-measures when it could’ve given gut punches that would’ve made the final moments feel satisfying.
I can completely see where you're coming from. I think what it boils down to is how open someone is to the idea of such a highly romanticized idea of love which of course asks a lot of the viewer. And I suppose when it comes to movie relationships, I see most of them as a bit unrealistic so I let anything slide haha. As someone who watches a lot of animated shows and films, use of color as a thematic tool is often used so there was as sense of familiarity regarding that element, as well as some aspects of the storytelling. I felt the individual characters were very strong - it reminded me of reading a comic book, I suppose, and there are a lot of shoehorned relationships in those that I've grown accustom to over the years. But thanks for your perspective, I definitely can agree with you to a point.
Wow you really opened my mind to costume design. I pay attention of different things in movies like the film score, sound design, etc. but now I’ll be thinking about why they choose that outfit for a character
The visuals in this film were amazing and the costume design was great. What I particularly loved about it was that while they were very important and added greatly to the story, they weren't too easy to dissect or understand, you just had to pay close attention to the film.
Don't get me wrong I like Hot Fuzz, but for me it's easily Wrights weakest don't get why it so much love above Shaun of the dead, Scott Pilgrim or Baby Driver, which are all way better in my humble opinion
Steve Porter Baby driver is a great movie for many reasons for example it has everything you want in a movie. Great music, amazing actors, great action and driving, romance, humor, serious scenes, intense scenes, surprising death scenes, memorable dialogue and much more..
Everyone has a film of his they'd put lowest on the ladder that others would rank the highest, I think that's a good sign of a talented filmmaker. I love all of his films, it just happens to be my personal number one.
YT Channel sorry don't understand your response, I totally agree Baby Driver for me is my favorite film of the year, I was discussing that I thought while good Hot Fuzz is over rated
Thank you for making this video. As a university senior studying costume design it means a lot to have recognization for the art. Looking forward to you future videos!
I always want to help showcase some underappreciated talent, and I thought this was a perfect opportunity! That's fantastic! It's a great career path! Thank you :)
Yes! As someone who draws, I have been trying to explain how costume/character design is reeeaally important for the character. This could include not only clothes but hair, tattoos, etc.
I love how when you talked about Baby being in a loop, you used a vinyl record to represent it. It fits what your saying and the musical concept of the movie itself. Good editing, nice job. 👍
Brilliant analysis ! The first thing I noticed when Debora was introduced was her yellow dress and how it related to Baby's mother's colors (blond, warm yellow and orange shades on her clothes).
Another thing I realised is the movie’s emphasis on primary colours surrounding Baby. the balloons in 3:18. The laundry in 5:44. oof the things you see when you’re really paying attention.
This was a great project, well done! One thing that came to my mind was how, after watching your section on Baby and elaborating on the black and white feature of the character, the prison outfit he wears is completely white, and how this could potentially represent him being absolved of "his sins", i.e. his life as a getaway driver, and how now he has one full life to live rather than two halves that are severely separated.
Damn. Stupendous analysis. I can't even describe how much I enjoyed Baby Driver. My personal favorite Wright film by far. It's a cumulative collection of all of these little touches that made it an A++ for me. Great Vid!
Thank you very much! It's absolutely amazing, I get why some people may not prefer it to his comedy films, but oh man it's a fun time, superbly made all the way through, I just love it.
While Fast 8 was getting all the hype I totally missed this movie at the theater. There's something about this movie that never gets old. Feels like fresh air every time I see it.
Man i really like this movie more and more, i remember when i watched in the theater all by myself, literally just me in the room, fantastic experience
Other than the fact that this video is really good, and the editing was on point, I couldn't help but notice your use of Com Truise in the background. Probably one of the best and most interesting producers of electronic music that I know of.
Well thank you! There are a lot of Com Truise fans out there, I never knew! I just really dig his style, and he's been doing it a lot longer than most, also, his name is just super fun to me. He's just a cool cat all around and I'm glad to see so many people digging the fact that I used his tunes!
At the end there’s no more black and he’s just dressed in white OOOO
Lol, nice profile.
@@phyokyawkhaing2251 It tricked me LOL
I hate your profilepicture
dark mode prevents this, but it's clever nonetheless
That freaking fly
Bats is literary a red herring. Until Buddy is forced into that role.
Yes! Such a great little twist for the film.
Great observation
This is a beautiful malapropism
You do not know what the word "literally" means
He’s literally a red fish. 😂😂😂
Edgar Wright tweeted about this
I read your comment and thought "Yeah...okay, like that would ever happen". 10/10 Was pleasantly surprised when I checked twitter.
What was the tweet?
"Here's a nice deep dive on the costume work in 'Baby Driver' - SPOILERS: BEWARE!" with a link to the video :)
@@tamircohen1512 Thank you for your service
And in the end, Baby only wore white when in prison. Guess he finally lives a light life.
YES. Lovely little detail right?
I like how baby always wears with sunglasses when doing a job but they’re broken by the end of the film, forcing him to see the crimes and violence around him. The glasses are my favorite part of his costume design.
It's weird how the internet is becoming smarter than the Oscars.
Haha, you make it seem like the Oscars have ever been smart XD
yea honestly, @film radar, you deserve an award.
Sensitive Sushiroll, that would be nice
I know right. Great analysis.
no
To be fair, most comedy directors ARE lazy compared to Edgar Wright.
Haha, you're not wrong there.
+Film Radar
I really can't think who manages to make everything as energetic as Edgar Wright does, I love him for that.
The Cohens!

Is an exception to the rules yes. But that's even if you'd want to consider his movies to be full on comedies.
I want to point out that most scenes where it involved debra and baby is a lot saturated, making the moment more lively and expressive. I just find that really sweet. It tells me how much baby feels lively around debra.
The laundromat scene is the perfect example of that too 💙❤💛
Everyone's saying "amazing editing," but I just wanted to take a second to acknowledge the incredible decision to use Baby's shades @1:20 to contrast the light and dark duality of Baby's existence.
Someone finally noticed! Excellent observation my dude.
You could also interpret that lense breaking in that scene as him truly seeing things as they are to the point where he makes important decisions based on his newly clarified view of the world
He also doesn't wear sunglasses for the rest of the movie I believe. Meaning he's not hiding from things anymore and he can literally see clearly
In school: Ok class , what can we learn from Shakespeare?
On TH-cam: Ok guys, what can we learn from Baby Driver?
If that was in school I would actually learn
it's actually kind of funny how well both Baby Driver and most works by Shakespeare fit in the art period of the english renaissance - both discuss the complex principles of humanism.
I'm not even joking - Newt's jeans are cuffed because they're too long, while Hermann's pants are clearly a few inches too short, in order to emphasize that they are opposites.)
I'd love to see more videos like this.
I think we all agree it'd be great, but Disney can't handle the greatness of Mr Wright... they have to stick to their repetitive story-line's haha
AsHalt he worked on ant man for 8 years but left in 2014
FINALLY someone who knows how to correctly spell y&y!
No doubt the most under-discussed part of film is the visuals in general, it's a movie but there's so little talk about what makes it a movie.
Your editing is getting scary good. Damn. Stop making me feel like a POS
Good job.
what the fuck is POS??
Hot Fuzz is the pinnacle of his achievement, but Baby Driver is also brilliant. Hot Fuzz gets points automatically just for being SO jam-packed with references, call-backs, and punchlines.
Have you ever fired two guns while jumping in the air?
No.
*Have you ever fired one gun while jumping in the air?*
Just the one swan actually.
Is it true, that there's a place in a man's head, that if you shoot at, it'll explode ?
You've got a mustache
I KNOW!
Scott pilgrim is my favorite movie
I loved Baby Driver a lot more which is saying something because I absolutely adored Hot Fuzz. Baby Driver is in my top 5 favorite movies
Baby driver was my favorite movie this year. Everyone was so good but it also made realize how good of an actor Jamie foxx is.
Also John Hamm is really hot.
Check out Ray, Collateral, or Jarhead, Jamie Foxx is absolutely terrific.
Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous.
A C Yes Jamie Foxx totally killed it !
And his death scene was frickin hilarious and came very unexpected. It's especially funny, if you think of him telling Baby that sometime he would have blood on his hands.
A
a C
Yes he is a great actor, but when he sings it is pure magic, too
One thing I noticed about the costume: the outfit @ 7:55 is a nod to mike wazowski in monsters university with the blue cap and one eye ball.
I hadn't noticed that!
"He has such respect for every craft that goes into filmmaking." - That's the most accurate thing ever written about him, I'm doing my masters about Scott Pilgrim and I'm gonna quote you on that.
Congratulations on pin pointing something like that, great video also.
Thank you for the lovely comment!
*the world's end
Baby Driver deserves at least a couple of nominations
I'd say so, knowing the Academy it probably won't get any, but I'm hoping for a few.

Hott Fuzz, Baby Driver, and Scott Pilgrim all tie for my favorite Wright movie while World's End and Suan of the Dead closely follow.
All excellent film!
Was he slow?
Then he doesn't sound retarded to me.
No he was fast
good kid and a devil behind the wheel
Retarded means slow, was he slow
lol
Ah! This was so amazing! After a couple months of not seeing this movie this analysis reminded how fantastic it was! Well done!
Thank you for your kind words!
You're welcome. It was well deserved! You should do one on Manchester by the Sea. What a fantastic film!
Well thank you for saying so! I did what I could to make it concise and entertaining!
This is deep! Really deep!
You're amazing for noticing these subtle details
Thank you for saying so! I did my best to dig out some stuff that other people hadn't noticed, it's good to know that I didn't screw it up! :D
I love movie break-downs like this, I pick up on a lot of foreshadowing and characterizations in shows, but these kinds of videos just get into the plot deeper and pick out the symbols that the film creators use. Really cool video, I enjoyed it!
So do I, and I'm just happy that I get the chance to make them! Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! :)
Darling and Buddy --> D and B
Debra and Baby--> D and B
Any thoughts?
I hadn't considered that! I'm sure that had to be intentional.
Or something like that
Or Buddy and Darling -> B D
Baby and Debra -> BD
BD -> Baby Driver.
@@108titan I know this was a year ago but they weren't innocent. Buddy works in wallstreet and had a family but took it all for granted and ran off with Darling his "favorite lapdancer" then led a life of crime.
Also Bats and Doc
I think my favorite use of color/costuming in Baby Driver was during the dinner date scene, where Deborah was the only one not dressed in black, symbolizing how she's the most important part of Baby's life. Not only that, she's dressed in yellow, the color that tints Baby's flashbacks, representing his association between Deborah and his mother. Genius stuff
Yup! Yellow is the bridge between those worlds, the connection to his past with his mother, which is why they're also both blonde. Good eye my friend!
I don't want to sound like that guy, but I don't think I've ever related more to a character in a movie than Baby.
Hey man, that's what movies are all about, getting the audience to connect with the character. I think he'd be pleased that you found him so relatable.
SAME
Also worth pointing out that the color coding within the heist crew also indicates team unity. In the first heist, the crew works very well together, and they all wore similarly dark clothes. Contrasting that to the final heist, in which you have almost the exact same cast but the dynamic is very different, the colors don't match nearly as well.
Thanks for the costume design appreciation post, it's a massive job that's usually understated.
Absolutely! I love giving credit where its due, especially to people who don't get as much as they deserve.
Phoebe Louise YEEEES!!
All these baby driver videos make me like the film more
I hate how people gloss over this film and dismiss it as another action/romance cliche.
Thank you! I'm glad you found the video insightful! Oh man, I'm so looking forward to your video, every video you put out is incredible.
Like Stories of Old Thanks to your comment, I found your channel. Gonna go to it now.
Like Stories of Old You putting that description that your channel playlist is chronological is genius.
Exactly! That's what's so amazing about it, you don't even have to notice it for it to be effective! I love stuff like that. Thank you!
Shane Fell also the clothes he grabs at the mall when he’s trying to hide are a blue jean jacket and a very blue hat
I was blown away from this video!!
Thank you kindly! :D
Excellent video. I never knew all these channels existed until Baby Driver came out. a happy discovery on my part. Thanks for being Awesome.
It's such a huge area worthy of discussing, I'm glad I could offer my own take on it :)
I never thought about it like that, but now that you point it out-it makes a ton of sense. Now I feel like I'm obliged to watch it again!
Lacy Stephens Hey, I love your taste! :D
Oh man, that's Edgar Wright for you, every scene has so many layers to it, the man is such a hero of mine. DO IT. Especially now that it's out on Blu-Ray.
BACK OFF HE'S MINE.
Jk, yeah, Jack's freaking awesome.
In a movie predominantly defined by its sound direction, you just made me respect the visuals so much more. Thank you for this. You've earned my sub.
Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate it! :D
A fantastic analysis of a brilliant film, videos like this really make me appreciate all the meticulous work that goes into every facet of crafting a movie as detail-centric as this. Great work!
I'm glad I could shed some light on the subject! Thank you :)
Man the editing of this video was phenomenal, especially the part with baby's glasses that you showed.
Thanks! That part turned out better than expected, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Film Radar
Nah man thank you for making dope content!
I'm still amazed bye how awesome that looked though!
My personal Edgar Wright list:
1. Scott pilgrim vs the world
2. Hot Fuzz
3. Baby driver
4. At Worlds end(or Whatever it’s called)
5. Shawn of the Dead
(Don’t care if you disagree)
Jesus Herrera Comedy that’s actually my exact same ranking
Great video! I'm so glad Wright made this movie, I think Baby Driver is his most widely accessible movie so far. His work is always so masterful, but always focuses on such a niche genre-mesh or style. The fact he made a shoot-em-up action movie in a time where the genre is so oversaturated, but created a story with heart, different perspectives and characters, and all of his signature wit and style, is really exciting. Hopefully the success of Baby Driver will bring more attention to his other films because he is so damn good at his craft, but it seems like not enough people know it.
He's one of those names that gets thrown around a lot within the right circles, but he's definitely no household name, and he absolutely should be.
This really subtle and genius! The costumes went completely over my head.
Aww well I feel honored! Thank you for the kind words, I hope you enjoy the other videos!
"because when my buddy sees red..." (darling/monica to baby), refers to the final scene, in which, buddy literally sees red, and inside of the laundromat where debrah and baby are listening to a song, the laundry is the three primary colors, Red, Yellow and Blue.
How tf did I not notice this
Don't worry, took me a few viewings to pick up on this stuff, with the help of some sources(that you can check out in the description if you'd like)
Film Radar Cool thanks 🤙🏼
Yellow dress also matches the color of his moms tape. Which symbolizes his mother and his time was when he was happiest.
loved the video, but i'm bummed that he didn't go into Buddy and Darling's costumes/colors. keep up the great work!
Josie Cremona Agreed, I was very interested to see what the lavender and pinks fit and how it tied into their relationship.
My top Edgar Wright films woulds would be:
1. Hot Fuzz
2. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World
3. Baby Driver
4. Shaun of The Dead (Was filmed next to my house)
5. The Worlds End
Thanks! Solid rankings my dude!
Really Interesting video! It's made me re-think how colour is used with in films :)!!!
Thank you! Glad I could help offer new insight :)
Loved your analysis. Usually longer video essays are not that engaging but u managed to make a brilliant 13 min video just discussing the costume design of baby driver.👍
Well thank you for saying so! I never want to stretch a video out just to hit that desired length, but man I had a lot to say with this one!
Your style of commentary reminds me of nerdwriter
Oh my god that Drive soundtrack... So good.
Good ear, man ;)
I thought I was the only one💀👌
This is why i love Edgar Wright, so much detail i get lost trying looking at all of it, he really know how to make a good movie.
Damn straight my man, he's a master of his craft.
Agreed, and if you make videos as well as this you'll be a great youtuber!
Thanks for saying so! I'll certainly do my best!
Baby driver needs oscar for costume design
At least a nomination would be nice I think.
Okay, but can we appreciate your video making skills, the way that you visually made the video was spectacular.
22 years paid off...
Right? I thought so.
I hadn't thought of costume design being used to tell such an in-depth story about a character, but this is absolutely amazing and has defenitly changed my view on its importance. Thank you for making the video.
Thank you for the lovely comment! Costume design is a wonderful thing, I'm glad you have a great appreciation for it!
1. Hot Fuzz
2. Shaun of the Dead
3. Scott Pilgrim
4. Baby Driver
5. The World's End
The World's End and Baby Driver are still fantastic movies.
Great use of music, I fell in love when you played the beat in the background it came in at the perfect time 5:32
Awesome video, my first from your channel but I'll be back! Subscribed
Thank you! Glad you liked the video!
Thank you so much for introducing this new music to me at the end of the video. I appreciate it. It really helps me find the songs I like listening to a lot when the songs used in the video are credited. 🙏
you need more subs
I wouldn't say no to that.
“It ends up saving the film from having to resort to the techniques that a lot of other films use to justify a romance between two characters.”
Like chemistry, character development and a sense of true understanding?
But thanks for your perspective, I definitely can agree with you to a point.
was thinking the same thing
Wow you really opened my mind to costume design. I pay attention of different things in movies like the film score, sound design, etc. but now I’ll be thinking about why they choose that outfit for a character
Baby also is dressed like Han Solo.
The visuals in this film were amazing and the costume design was great. What I particularly loved about it was that while they were very important and added greatly to the story, they weren't too easy to dissect or understand, you just had to pay close attention to the film.
That's Edgar Wright for you, always putting tons of details for the attentive viewer!
It really does have it all, one of the best of the year for sure.
YT Channel sorry don't understand your response, I totally agree Baby Driver for me is my favorite film of the year, I was discussing that I thought while good Hot Fuzz is over rated
It’s this video and baby driver itself that taught me about this element of characteristics keep being awesome dude
Thank you for making this video. As a university senior studying costume design it means a lot to have recognization for the art. Looking forward to you future videos!
I always want to help showcase some underappreciated talent, and I thought this was a perfect opportunity! That's fantastic! It's a great career path! Thank you :)
OH YES, i was really expecting your take on baby driver, i'm so happy that the video is finally out!
I'm happy that you're happy!
Yes! As someone who draws, I have been trying to explain how costume/character design is reeeaally important for the character. This could include not only clothes but hair, tattoos, etc.
100%, often overlooked but incredibly important.
I love how when you talked about Baby being in a loop, you used a vinyl record to represent it. It fits what your saying and the musical concept of the movie itself. Good editing, nice job. 👍
Thanks, glad you appreciated that :)
This is my first time visitng your channel and I'm glad that I clicked on this. You've got yourself another subscriber. Cheers!
Glad you're enjoying the content!
I never realised costume design can be so efficient in storytelling. Great job! Looking forward to more of your work :)
Everything can be a tool for storytelling when in the right hands ;) Thank you so much!
Love the fresh take, and awesome visual presentation of arguments & topics. Compliments all around
When watched films, everything detailed like this goes way over my head.
While Fast 8 was getting all the hype I totally missed this movie at the theater. There's something about this movie that never gets old. Feels like fresh air every time I see it.
Man i really like this movie more and more, i remember when i watched in the theater all by myself, literally just me in the room, fantastic experience
I'm fascinated, edgar wright is an artist, and honestly this video was very entertaining
Edits and transitions are crazy good man. Keep at it please!
Thanks dude! I will do my best!
He's just a cool cat all around and I'm glad to see so many people digging the fact that I used his tunes!
already watched this film over 5 times. can never get not entertained.
