To all the people who are asking why not take lunch with you? In mumbai you have to commute a lot and offices start at either 9 or 10 and to reach there you have to leave at 7 or 8 depending where you live . Lunch time is between 1 to 2 pm . Now imagine making lunch so early in morning and carrying it in humid weather for hours . It doesn't stay fresh. That's why lunch is delivered like this. Most Indians like eating fresh food. No weekly food prep here. No freezer lunches and no microwave dinners.

At first, I got confused, too, being not from Mumbai. But the comfort and nutrition from home cooked meals? I'd pay someone to fetch lunch from my mom's house, too.
I love India , even when its hard to explain , the system works . I wish I could have a fella show up with a great meal from my wife at lunch time , it would make me feel appreciated and loved , knowing it came from family, if I went and grabbed a soup and sandwich , I would feel lonely and disconnected. angry at work as they take time away from family . However I drove a tractor for 16 to 18 hours a day very lonely job . My husband works, I have recently had to reduce my work hours due to health problems, but I do make some money doing some work from home (I'm an artisan craftsman) but my most important job is that of a wife. We are, unfortunately, childless for a number of reasons and I wish I could change that, but we go on. One of the things that gives me most joy in life is cooking for and serving food to my hard working husband. I can say with just about absolute certainty that this provides him with a great amount of happiness, as well. There is no greater happiness than preparing meals for those you love. Even when my Dad was alive, I loved cooking for him! Just something about hardworking men enjoying something delicious, hot, and nourishing made by hands that love him really satisfies my heart. Knowing that there is a service dedicated to providing this wholesome joy to millions of Dads, husbands, grandfathers and brothers who would otherwise have a cold, lonely sandwich made by some pimple faced teenager that stands around with his hands down his pants and doesn't wash his hands after he poops, eaten off a piece of wax paper, or maybe some greasy food truck samonella salad, or who would just as soon skip lunch and wait for dinner, makes me happy. Well in some areas of the world where the climate is hot food usually get spoiled easily in my familys province if you leave food for 6 hours it’ll get spoiled. So imagine if their office hours is at 7 am and they cook their food at six am and it is only at 12 nn that they’ll eat it, then their food may get spoiled. Well for those who work in big companies where offices are air condition their food wont get spoiled but for those small establishment it’ll be a different story
for people who find this service useless... Most of the Indian(traditional) families do not like to consume food stored in fridges over night and have it microwaved! Reminds me of the noodle delivery men of South Korea. These couriers are known by their iconic stainless steel heat boxes, riding a Vespa scooter. You could be ordering from literally anywhere in the city and they *Will* find you somehow, and miraculously not spill a single drop of soup even if you order from the top of a mountain. From time to time they are also referred to as "Bullet Men" since they travel so fast, although the title can sound sinister if you take it out of context. They are hard working, honest men... well... at least most of them are, and have nothing to do with putting people six feet under. ( Coughs nervously )

Just when you are at the peak of stress in the office, a lunchbox from home arrives on your desk. Virtually connecting you and your wife who cooked it. Then you restart the other half of the day with renewed energy. I am not an Indian so the closest thing I had was only a tiffin service when I was there. Still it felt so warming.
Lunch in India is not Hamburger or Pizza. It's a proper lunch like Rice, Roti, Daal (lentil), Vegetables., Curd, Chutney etc. Hence u can't prepare all these within 8 am in the morning. So that's where the Dabba wallah comes in.
Mumbai is densely populated city and is huge. So people come to mumbai to work from 60-70kms as well. They get out of their homes at 6AM for local trains, and get at their jobs by 8:30AM where traveling time for them is 2 hours. It is not possible to prepare lunches so early hence they use dabbawala service where they can handover the dabba(tiffin) at 8:45AM and it will reach its destination by 11AM. Hope it makes sense.
This was...shocking. 200,000 people getting their lunches from one company that runs based on using trains and bikes. Along with this they do that at all in one day with enough people to do it. With so many people, they are somehow able to have them work well enough to succeed in their deliveries. Mistakes being 0.01% as she said. This is true success in a company of I've ever seem it. What confuses me is why do people want their lunch delivered if they made it themself? Why not bring it to their work themselves. It doesn't seem the delivery service does anything to keep them cooled from what I've seem and heard.

I can see the rush to work being problematic too, but I would think they would also have to carry something to bring some supplies to work? Plus lunches shouldn't weigh that much? A human can only eat so much weight in a sitting.
I've been interested in this system ever since I saw the Top Gear special and India. These guys are remarkably reliable, but I have to think that centralized kitchens cooking food close to where most people are working would be more efficient in terms of human labor and the energy used for cooking.
And that's why most of the world doesn't do this. It's completely frivolous luxury. But hey, when you have a massive country filled with very poor people, you can afford to waste labour.

I love questions like these. Typically, people think with their native language, but it is possible to switch to thinking in your secondary language if you've spent a lot of time surrounded by it. I think in both English, German, and French sometimes. Kinda hectic, but still works out.

Why? 1. Home made food. Restaurant food could punch a hole in your pocket as well as in your intestine. 2. Humid climate could ruin the food easily. Fresh food in India won't involve refrigeration and microwave. 3. We are spending what we have in abundance for a small luxury: Human resource. 4. An employment opportunity for a large group of people. 5. Morning commute is pretty difficult, considering the tightly packed buses and trains. Everyone resorts to public transport. One less bag to carry could make a difference.
I could read many comment's about why dont they carry lunches with them in the morning and reheat and refrigerate it and bla bla bla. Let me get this straight: We Indians can eat re-heated and hotel food utmost for few days, after that we need fresh hot Ghar ka khana (home cooked meal) else our stomach wont count it as a meal, not even reheated one. This system is best example of management and even studied in the curriculum due to its huge accuracy and reliability. Its been there for many years n those who stay in Mumbai can only know the real need for it.

Mumbai runs because of these dabbawalas. The most accurate service to get your dabba delivered, in the extreme chaos of mumbai. They had one separate chapter in my schools English textbook.
They all go through this effort because someone at home wants to bring you the best meal. It's an exchange of love. These dabbawalas work hard because they want to make sure everyone receives the love that was sent to them.
This video explained the "what" and most of the "how", but I had to read the comments to discover the "who" and especially the "why". There really should have been another minute explaining why this system exists and why so many workers in Mumbai prefer it to alternatives. yeah just take your food that your spouse make at least 4 in the morning so you could go at 5 and not missed work at 7. Then reheat it at 12 for lunch, that assuming you're the only one to bring food from home and don't have to wait for the microwave to be empty (if thers any at work) Also consider "food" is not always cold sandwich. For me normal food is rice, vegetables, and other protein if thers any. If you have tried packing those in lunch box you know you have to cool it down first so it don't get soggy (means another time needed to prepare). Reheating decrease the food quality, both nutritional value and taste cs the traditional food meant to be served hot. Buying food might cost a lot of money and you still have to go out of office and back again if there's no cafeteria. With this the person at home that makes you food could wake up in humane time, buy fresh vegetables at morning market (not some leftover from yesterday or any low nutrition quickies just so you're not late), make rice and everything, pack and hand it to delivery so you could eat warm fresh homemade food from your loved one. That my friend, is a culture difference. I'm not Indian living in mumbai so thers no service like this here but we also have some culture similarity so I could understand the motivation. I even have some occasion when was a kid where my mom delivered my luch. Class started at 7 and the whole process from buying veggies to cooking takes quite a while.

In Australia , the outback , I had a cookee prepare my daily ration the night before , it was good . However I drove a tractor for 16 to 18 hours a day very lonely job . After school the bosses kids wanted a ride in large tractor , bosses wife liked me being nice to kids , as she picked up kids , also bringing me todays lunch , the boss was glad I was keeping his wife happy. I was happy to feel part of family. Same thing

Women being home makers just need some laws that protect and ensure rights as giving them employment benefits or salary sharing or minimum support money so that they get freedom to do apart from cooking cleaning and kids. Sadly most women cannot find time for anything especially after kids and husband need catering. My husband works, I have recently had to reduce my work hours due to health problems, but I do make some money doing some work from home (I'm an artisan craftsman) but my most important job is that of a wife. We are, unfortunately, childless for a number of reasons and I wish I could change that, but we go on.
One of the things that gives me most joy in life is cooking for and serving food to my hard working husband. I can say with just about absolute certainty that this provides him with a great amount of happiness, as well. There is no greater happiness than preparing meals for those you love. Even when my Dad was alive, I loved cooking for him! Just something about hardworking men enjoying something delicious, hot, and nourishing made by hands that love him really satisfies my heart. Knowing that there is a service dedicated to providing this wholesome joy to millions of Dads, husbands, grandfathers and brothers who would otherwise have a cold, lonely sandwich made by some pimple faced teenager that stands around with his hands down his pants and doesn't wash his hands after he poops, eaten off a piece of wax paper, or maybe some greasy food truck samonella salad, or who would just as soon skip lunch and wait for dinner, makes me happy.
That there is a society that thinks it is important enough to have this service, still going strong, in this rotten world gives me hope for humanity.

Well in some areas of the world where the climate is hot food usually get spoiled easily in my familys province if you leave food for 6 hours it’ll get spoiled. So imagine if their office hours is at 7 am and they cook their food at six am and it is only at 12 nn that they’ll eat it, then their food may get spoiled. Well for those who work in big companies where offices are air condition their food wont get spoiled but for those small establishment it’ll be a different story

Most of the Indian(traditional) families do not like to consume food stored in fridges over night and have it microwaved! ( yes they do not commonly have microwaves at home) as they prepare food two times or three commonly!!
and regarding the centralized kitchens idea...
they are multi cultural and have a wide variety of food habits and its mostly impossible to cater what they want!
and spice levels of each individuals is very different and the centralize kitchens can not serve every individual who have health problems and can only have or prefer specific oils and spices or items!

These couriers are known by their iconic stainless steel heat boxes, riding a Vespa scooter.
You could be ordering from literally anywhere in the city and they *Will* find you somehow, and miraculously not spill a single drop of soup even if you order from the top of a mountain.
From time to time they are also referred to as "Bullet Men" since they travel so fast, although the title can sound sinister if you take it out of context.
They are hard working, honest men... well... at least most of them are, and have nothing to do with putting people six feet under. ( Coughs nervously )

It's the freshly cooked food that theyre after.. this is not everyone in Mumbai.. but those people who have someone at home who will make them lunch and snacks fresh , use this service... its actually not at all about the space. It's not really cattle cars there is a reservation system and some of the trains( locals that function for very small distances and for a few minutes are crowded ) .. I've been living in India(mumbai ) for two years now. It's just the fresh hot food. Another important factor is that Indian food is elaborate.. keeping things in a lunch pail for 4-6 hours can damage its texture , consistency taste and in the hot and humid weather here might even go bad in the summer by the evening. Plus its not that the women cook for the men , men are the sole breadwinners, there are people who run small scale businesses of preparing home made meals for these working men and women.
The whole government and private sector could learn allot when it comes to efficiency and consistency.

Just when you are at the peak of stress in the office, a lunchbox from home arrives on your desk. Virtually connecting you and your wife who cooked it. Then you restart the other half of the day with renewed energy.
I am not an Indian so the closest thing I had was only a tiffin service when I was there. Still it felt so warming.
Lunch in India is not Hamburger or Pizza. It's a proper lunch like Rice, Roti, Daal (lentil), Vegetables., Curd, Chutney etc.
Hence u can't prepare all these within 8 am in the morning. So that's where the Dabba wallah comes in.
Mumbai is densely populated city and is huge. So people come to mumbai to work from 60-70kms as well. They get out of their homes at 6AM for local trains, and get at their jobs by 8:30AM where traveling time for them is 2 hours. It is not possible to prepare lunches so early hence they use dabbawala service where they can handover the dabba(tiffin) at 8:45AM and it will reach its destination by 11AM. Hope it makes sense.

This was...shocking. 200,000 people getting their lunches from one company that runs based on using trains and bikes. Along with this they do that at all in one day with enough people to do it. With so many people, they are somehow able to have them work well enough to succeed in their deliveries. Mistakes being 0.01% as she said. This is true success in a company of I've ever seem it.
What confuses me is why do people want their lunch delivered if they made it themself? Why not bring it to their work themselves. It doesn't seem the delivery service does anything to keep them cooled from what I've seem and heard.

Well in Mumbai ,to reach your office on time people need to first catch up a train competing with almost millions of people then travel hours standing then again take up a rickshaw to reach the office.
And then if you wait for the cooking part early morning then you are going to miss the train adding another hour.

I can see the rush to work being problematic too, but I would think they would also have to carry something to bring some supplies to work? Plus lunches shouldn't weigh that much? A human can only eat so much weight in a sitting.

I've been interested in this system ever since I saw the Top Gear special and India. These guys are remarkably reliable, but I have to think that centralized kitchens cooking food close to where most people are working would be more efficient in terms of human labor and the energy used for cooking.
They're actually delivering home cooked food. As in food from the customer's home prepared by the customer's mom/wife.That's what makes it special.
And that's why most of the world doesn't do this.
It's completely frivolous luxury.
But hey, when you have a massive country filled with very poor people, you can afford to waste labour.

I love questions like these. Typically, people think with their native language, but it is possible to switch to thinking in your secondary language if you've spent a lot of time surrounded by it. I think in both English, German, and French sometimes. Kinda hectic, but still works out.

1. Home made food. Restaurant food could punch a hole in your pocket as well as in your intestine.
2. Humid climate could ruin the food easily. Fresh food in India won't involve refrigeration and microwave.
3. We are spending what we have in abundance for a small luxury: Human resource.
4. An employment opportunity for a large group of people.
5. Morning commute is pretty difficult, considering the tightly packed buses and trains. Everyone resorts to public transport. One less bag to carry could make a difference.
I could read many comment's about why dont they carry lunches with them in the morning and reheat and refrigerate it and bla bla bla. Let me get this straight: We Indians can eat re-heated and hotel food utmost for few days, after that we need fresh hot Ghar ka khana (home cooked meal) else our stomach wont count it as a meal, not even reheated one. This system is best example of management and even studied in the curriculum due to its huge accuracy and reliability. Its been there for many years n those who stay in Mumbai can only know the real need for it.
Fun fact about these error free operators: Most of them haven't even studied past middle school.
Its not about people doing their job, its about people preserve their culture

In Mumbai thing go fast, most works usually starts 6 or 7 a.m. some@5 or earlier, and Indians like fresh homemade foods.... a lunch made at early morning will not be fresh at noon..
At first I thought "why not just bring your lunch with you?" but I'm getting the impression many commute far away and by the time it is lunch time, it would be cold/lukewarm and the microwave takes away some of the flavor. I'm also getting the impression that for this service to work someone needs to be at home cooking? So would it work something like this (?) - you go to work, someone at home cooks your lunch while your at work, the dabba picks it up (at what time?), and then gets it sorted with all the other deliveries, brings you lunch so that way it tastes more fresh and is still nice and warm (?), then after you're done with lunch the dabba picks it back up and brings it home? Am I getting this right? lol

Mumbai runs because of these dabbawalas. The most accurate service to get your dabba delivered, in the extreme chaos of mumbai. They had one separate chapter in my schools English textbook.
They all go through this effort because someone at home wants to bring you the best meal. It's an exchange of love. These dabbawalas work hard because they want to make sure everyone receives the love that was sent to them.

There really should have been another minute explaining why this system exists and why so many workers in Mumbai prefer it to alternatives. yeah just take your food that your spouse make at least 4 in the morning so you could go at 5 and not missed work at 7. Then reheat it at 12 for lunch, that assuming you're the only one to bring food from home and don't have to wait for the microwave to be empty (if thers any at work)
Also consider "food" is not always cold sandwich. For me normal food is rice, vegetables, and other protein if thers any. If you have tried packing those in lunch box you know you have to cool it down first so it don't get soggy (means another time needed to prepare). Reheating decrease the food quality, both nutritional value and taste cs the traditional food meant to be served hot. Buying food might cost a lot of money and you still have to go out of office and back again if there's no cafeteria.
With this the person at home that makes you food could wake up in humane time, buy fresh vegetables at morning market (not some leftover from yesterday or any low nutrition quickies just so you're not late), make rice and everything, pack and hand it to delivery so you could eat warm fresh homemade food from your loved one.
That my friend, is a culture difference. I'm not Indian living in mumbai so thers no service like this here but we also have some culture similarity so I could understand the motivation. I even have some occasion when was a kid where my mom delivered my luch. Class started at 7 and the whole process from buying veggies to cooking takes quite a while.
