Completely disagree with the idea of not punishing a dog. Punishment is not abuse. It is building discipline and training a dog to realize certain behaviors are not ok.

The idea that they can't understand negative reinforcement but can understand positive reinforcement makes absolutely no sense
Agreed. I used ignoring, pushing and of course jerking leash as a negative feedback and my Beagle obviously understand that. Fortunately, mine such a people pleaser (eventough many people say Beagle is more independent creature) so she's a fast learner and obedient. She's 18 months old now, always follow my command and could walking off leash.
I agree. Punishment in the sense of leash pops isnt needed, but things like blocking the dog or verbal corrections, verbal punishment or sometimes pushing the dog back are a pretty direct way of communicating and is easily understood.
How else can you establish boundaries?
Its how dogs communicate with each other. You just gotta be careful on your intensity.
Negative reinforcement doesnt have to mean abuse - sometimes it can include merely unpleasant things or even "annoying" things.
And R+ doesnt just have to be about treats. I think it can be about feelings and natural reinforcers as well.
Although, in the first year of living, I think it can be good to use R+ for establishing good behaviours in the first place. Then you dont have to correct em later on.
I butchered my Beagles training for the first few years in his life and the only reasons he listens to me now are because I made him understand what I wanted, backed it up when he didnt do it and gave him treats for when he obeyed commands (most important for off leash walking I think, cause he has gotta have a reason for doing things).

Can you please recommend some harness? I have a beagle who is 2.5 yrs old. He doesn't like the harness which goes over his head.

How do you housebreak this dog? How difficult is it to housebreak a beagle?
Thank God I read about this breed before getting one. In my opinion these are not house/famiy dogs, they are farm dogs which is what they were bread to be: hounds. People who own them should say this upfront. The one's who don't are really irresponsible dog owners.

I learned not to use a collar the hard way, when my beagle slipped out of his to chase a car while walking from the vet back to car, it was really scary

Just like u suggested to not punish them ,and just say no ,it mostly doesn't work with them .and I think punishment is kinda nesescarry ,it doesn't mean u should hit them but ,it's kinda like ur teaching them discipline ,it doesn't work my beagle (Not a hate comment)
Remember it's not the dog being bad. They only respond the way they are trained. Their little mammalian brains don't bother with any plot to disobey. As the adult in the room, it's your responsibility to make sure they have the chance to behave.

Harness promotes pulling
Very true,they tend to pull more,found a collar works better for me

If a dog doesn't feel uncomfortable when pulling - he will do it all the time.
The best thing to use here is halti.
There has to be some medium between training and exercise. But the bottom line is that if you just have a leash around his neck your baby WILL have problems later. Skeletal issues are very problematic and very painful for your baby. Personally I'd rather take the time so he isn't suffering in the future.

I wouldnt just recommend a halti out of nowhere - a halti can cause health issues on the neck area. If used in a wrong training approach. But it can be a great tool!
Though I prefer the approach of using body language or leash pressure first.
I personally use a collar for my dog since it worked very well for establishing loose leash walking and now he responds to really subtle cues. But I did have to put a lot of work in it.
And the same can be done with a harness! Only difference is that with a harness, you cant give subtle cues. But you can base your loose leash walking on orientation and a radius command. That way the dog may pay more attention to you than to the leash - which my dog unfortunately does and the reason why we have to train on usual vs on long leash/off leash walking very differently.
