One of the down sides of living with dogs is that every so often one will come across an "interesting" smell and decide to roll in it, almost like applying perfume. It's a natural instinct they have that we don't entirely understand ( www.akc.org/expert-advice/lifestyle/why-dogs-roll-smelly-stuff/ ), but it's clear they don't find certain smells offensive the same way we do.

Dogs loooove dead things for some reason. My dog would occasionally find old bird cadavers and stuff and just roll around in them, I'm pretty sure it has to do with masking your scent from potential prey. It's awful though, and it smells like literal death. Decomposing flesh is genuinely one of the most violently pungent smells on this earth.
Thank you for always bringing a daily smile to our faces with Oliver:) I can smile again having good memories of our Rasta. She was taken way too young at 8yrs old with cancer. So vibrant, always ready to walk rain, sleet or snow and could find food on a walk where no other dog could:) she would have loved to have Oliver as a partner in crime:):)
The look of disgust on Oliver's face while getting bathed is priceless. And how he runs all over the house afterwards, is exactly what beagles do when you let them go after partially drying them.

Honestly, I started laughing out loud when hearing the dead rat story. Just a wonderful reminder that, even with an adorable dog as Oliver, we are still dealing with an animal. The toweling off session gave me total flashbacks to my own (long deceased) dog. The trying to wrap the dog with a towel, the burst of energy released and the fun of the chase. I miss it all.

I know, it is kind of amazing! I don't know why Oliver almost never tries to jump out of the bath. It's the same thing whenever I pick him up--he never struggles when he's in my arms, even if I am picking him up to get him away from something that he really wants. I don't really understand why--he definitely has a mind of his own in some situations, but not in other ones.

He is actually stressed by being in the water. My dog becomes a statue whenever I bathe him. Notice he keeps licking his lips and his tail is down. I give mine treats as I bathe him which helps

Dear Owner: I highly recommend getting a sprayer attachment. Makes bath time much easier and effective! P.S. I taught my dog to roll on a towel after his bath...he would have to be re-directed a few times, but mostly he dried off on his towel. Oliver is the cutest little Pinnochio!

They pick up on tones and facial gestures. That is why when my doggie is naughty, I just give her an understanding look and pet her while I talk to her. She is a shelter dog, so I've made sure there is lots of love in my tone. Oliver you have a great dad.

Love it!! C'mon dad! Rolling in dead yuck is a hounddog's most cherished, time-honored tradition. Even more fun......killing a critter, chewing it for a while and THEN rolling in it. Huge fun!! I can't tell you how many smelly car rides I endured driving Maggie home from a walk in the country after she rolled in a dead something. Eau de toilette du critter mort. Thanks for posting the not so glorious part of owning a dog. While 90% of it is all fun, cuteness and happiness, there’s still that 10% where they just drive you nuts and do some wrong!! I can't tell you how many smelly car rides I endured driving Maggie home from a walk in the country after she rolled in a dead something.

Thanks for posting the not so glorious part of owning a dog. While 90% of it is all fun, cuteness and happiness, there’s still that 10% where they just drive you nuts and do some wrong!! Thanks for bringing this to light for some potential future dog owners - owning one will always have its challenges 🙂 but the pros always outweigh the cons. We still love you Oliver
