  • Enjoy a reading from Rupert on the powerful wisdom of the Christian Mystics.
Rupert explains that after 40 years of studying Eastern traditions, he finds himself falling back into the Christian roots in which he grew up. He describes Christian Mysticism in particular to be perhaps the most powerful expression of the non-dual understanding for him.

In this talk Rupert is reading first from the book: Meister Eckhart, Selected Writings, translated by Oliver Davies. After that, from 17:28, he reads from Brother Lawrence, The Practice of the presence of God In Modern English, translated by Marshall Davis. I mention these sources for the convenience of the listeners, and also to pay due respect to the translators. A translation can make or break a text, and both these translations are very sincere.

Thank you Rupert. Such a beautiful teaching from the heart. Having gone to a Catholic boarding school in Ireland in the early 60s early 70s a time when the church in Ireland operated as a cult with complete power over the people and no accountability. I of course rejected the church as there was very little taught about the real Jesus and Christianity but managed to maintain great respect and reverence for some of the early Christian Mystics and thanks to you my knowledge and faith in them has greatly increased. Thank you for giving me the window to revisit not only these teachings but also those of the Sufi and Buddhist schools. Your teachings are profound and touch me deeply as I experience they coming directly from your heart and soul. Thank you and may God/ consciousness keep you safe calm and happy.

The 'smart' discourses of philosophers or spiritual teachers are very attractive and satisfy our intellect, but as bright as they can be, they never replace a direct experience of our true self. Call it god or else does not impact on the true unmistakable feeling of being face to face with oneself. Christian mystics are great in this direct path and most often overlooked with Eastern traditions without diminishing their greatness and unique analysis. Mystics of East and West unites in the fruit of the spiritual journey: love, peace and wisdom. Thank you Rupert for this breeze of freshness and pure joy.

Thomas Merton, as a young man, became acquainted with the Hindu monk Brahmachari. Merton showed interest, and he was surprised when the monk encouraged him to connect, not with Hinduism, but with his own Christian tradition. Personally, I investigated various paths, although never the Eastern religions, until I embraced my Catholic roots. Looking back, I believe reading Merton's "7 Story Mountain" and C.S. Lewis' "Surprised by Joy" provided the spark. It still took years to get back after reading those books.

Thank you for sharing this. I have noticed in the last few years a shift from personal love and interests to the impersonal. The love for all is so much more intense. I'm so much better at seeing God through each face as I don't see many people. I cant always let go enough but more often. It was after a major surgery that has left me mostly in bed and alone but with great gifts. Instead of years of mantras, which were so helpful, now I feel an expanded falling in. I don't have a desire to be with God but fall into him. This way of living is a gift as I can be quiet and god can be alone with me. Rumi. Love Christ and so many. Its all just blending into just love.

Recently, discovering Ramana Maharishi led me to a deeper level of mysticism. Hence it is so interesting coming across your channel. I stay with my roots, Catholic mysticism largely according to St, John of the Cross. Now I am recalling his nadas, drawn back to his teachings on Dark Contemplation.

“KENOSIS” is the 'self-emptying' of Jesus' own will and becoming entirely receptive to God's divine will. The word ἐκένωσεν is used in Philippians 2:7: "[Jesus] made himself nothing", or "[he] emptied himself", using the verb form κενόω, meaning "to empty".

The Christian Mystics seemed to find their way in a far less systematized practice. They followed a Christian Tradition which was far more invisible than the eastern guru system. Of course, they are one in the same, ultimately. But, those Christian mystics seemed to express themselves in a way that was so awesome and filled with wonderment because their path was not so clearly delineated in most cases. For most of us, we do not see the path of Christianity as clear cut as certain yogic systems. However, some Christian Mystics were able to find the thread of science in it, such as Mary Baker Eddy, and others of that revival era.

This morning out of prayer it was quite clear to me I had to try much harder to get well or I probably wouldn't. The only reason
I mention it is both a qi gong practice and his reading of Meister Eckhart made me so incredibly sad I am weeping. What they
say and intend as ends is a misdirection I suspect. The Messiah brought a sword; he identified as sounds. Silence and peace
    --be careful.

Isn't that something?-I also came back..not that I ever left..but I never entered as deeply as I have now, after studying everything else under the sun. It's as if being introduced to Christianity as a child, and then never fulfilled it's purpose and it so patiently waited in me until I would realize JUST HOW MUCH IT IS OF MY INNER BEING and "identity" as an incarnate dualistic being in this life- it's "home", it's FAMILY, it's "my tribe" to use different analogies. Sad when I think how much time I, in considerable part, wasted. I'm not taking away ANY of the beauty and power that the other traditions do indeed have, that I thoroughly loved and enjoyed /benefited from. In fact, I still keep many of those things, because they are common to general goodness and objective experience. Now though, I feel like I'm trying to make up for lost time, and hoping that I have enough time to fulfill the "PEARL OF GREAT PRICE", JESUS being the "ROOT GURU", as equal to the Totality that is God, for me.

I, too, love Eckhart, his sermons and lectures. Indeed, there can few who would watch this video who do not do so. It is with that in mind that I have a question for anyone who would like to contribute - it largely concerns the way that Christians tend usually use the non-duality.
In most accounts that I come across within a Christian context, the term 'non-duality' is usually used to denote the state of 'Oneness with God'. In other words, to recognise that in the world of appearances there is individuality whereas in the state of union those appearances are seen as simple illusions - that all appearances are merely aspects of the One.
However, Eckhart goes further. He talks about the Godhead. Indeed, he tells us that the Godhead is a far above God, as God is above the Earth. Clearly this is only metaphorical language, but he does explain that the Godhead is the source of God. God, to Eckhart, is not a state of non-duality - as most Christians seem to argue. It is the Godhead that is the state of true non-duality. He describes at length how that in order to remain a separate 'creature', the soul does not merge into the Godhead but remains separated by 'a little point'. Hence, by not merging, they retain some type of dualistic existence within the concept of the Union with God.
So, two questions arise. Firstly, is Eckhart really saying that Union with God is not the same as merging with the non-dual state? Secondly, Why is the term, 'Godhead' used so frequently by Eckhart but so rarely in other Christian mystical teaching? Is it because his awakening is that much deeper?
Any thoughts from anyone would be appreciated, providing they respect the essence of what is being asked.

I'm a Christian mystic NOT by choice! I learned over the years to appreciate my station and am grateful today for it.. but really never wanted to be on this position, My first blown vision left me extremely joyous and extremely sad, before I could grasp the things of physics, spiritual realms ECT. I felt left here, left behind, I wanted to go with God when he left, be where he was going In my human experience in this realm, my mind before the truth manifested itself ,could only conceive the physical, the presence of Glory appeared, terrifying me, at first, until the Glory filled my soul, my cup overflowed, I was filled with The sweetest savor of love, bliss, enthusiasm, Joy, happiness, knowledge, awe and wonder, and just like that the Glory disappeared from the physical realm There's no normal from that point moving forward, from that moment on I was half in this world and half in the spiritual realm, people don't realize an experience with God in this realm changes a person, Mind, body, soul, one month nute I was a human next minute I was a human with some crazy knowledge and understanding which wasn't only unexplained to those around me but Incomprehensible, yet the most epic event ever but you can't share it with just anyone, I tried, believe me, all i wanted to be normal and fit in, be a part of this event called life but instead I'm set apart, alone, lonely, waiting everyday to go home.. home sick like a three year old..waiting for my dad to pull into Earth's driveway with my favorite blanket in hand..I don't think like other mystics, I know God loves me in this station just the way I am, My purpose here isn't to be closer to him by emptying myself so he is the only experience I have here, That mindset is impossible, There is nothing but him, all things I experience are through him, so his presence is everywhere, yet nowhere, I'm here to endure the physical aspect of nowhere and master that experience become stronger and wade through the hell it is to sometimes think I'm separated from him, I realize it's only 80 years but when God personally visits you and showers you with it's love, bliss, light and joy, one finds themselves in a similar mindset as that of a crack head, overwhelming love , the drug, ones system is in need of the much desired effects of the hit of love to the system, finds themselves doing things in servitude to get another fix, it's the closest way to feel it again, here on earth, serving others, the appreciation and love you receive back another way to feel it from the atmosphere is laughter and dancing and singing and praising, all these things put u closer to the feeling of God's love.. just saying .Yeshua did it all already, we won already, All God wants us to do now is live in that victory, share that victory, speak out powerful things from truth in victory, Our Father is the MOST powerful entity which is the true existence all else is death and lies..and you my friends are heirs to that throne, of a royal bloodline, adopted into the best family ever! Now go out and spread the good news and gather our sisters and brothers together again in love and humility.

Ive experienced God and it can be confusing for the mind because what happens to me is that I realize that there is no ego separate and apart from God and that I am identical to God in everyway as I am like the whole world and yet I am not in control of anything and there is no self in any of it. All there is is being, I AM. Its so strange and if you try to share it you just simply can't because no matter how you try to explain it as I am now it never comes out completely accurate. It is God being born within the heart and there is no other.
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.......Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
    John 8:31‭-‬32‭, ‬34‭-‬36 KJV
At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
    John 14:20‭-‬21 KJV
I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else. I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
    Isaiah 45:5‭-‬7 KJV
    All is God....All is Brahman
We are made in the image and likeness of God. The Atman is Brahman. The soul is identical with God. There is no distinction between our Self and God and the whole of existence including every other person on earth. We are all truly within one another. We are One.
