    I have four degrees including a doctorate, and every time I exceeded their expectations in Florida, I was fired. I have been told that the problem was is that I needed to take off my education on my resume. I am not making this up. And then they say all black people in America want is to stay on welfare, sell drugs, and commit crimes. You think by getting an education you are breaking the negative stereotypes of black people in this country. But they don’t want you to break those negative stereotypes, especially in the south. They want you to live up to those negative stereotypes by denying who you are and what you have achieved. America, this country, is something else. It is full of lies and hypocrisy.

    I have a Biblical name and i was not getting any responses to my resume. I changed my name to a common name and with in a week I had two job offers. I took one and I have been with the company now for 10 years. I am the only black person in my whole department. I have seen a few others hired but for some reason they didn’t work out. I learned to say less. Work hard and speak only when spoken to and that has allowed me to work 10 years in a job I love. I feel valued and respected but for some reason they don’t like when you take a leadership role. We saw the consequences of electing a Black President and where we have been as a result over the past 5 years.

  • @marie2511
    @marie2511 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    This is FACT! And what's worse is that when Black Americans finally do get into leadership roles, their peers; people above and below make your first time experience so toxic and unbearable, that for some it deters them from ever wanting to be a leadership role again. The universe doesn't like ugly and people taking part in the dismantling and breaking down of a person's spirit will pay for it 100 fold. Yes, I've had to "whiten" my resume for every position I've applied for.

  • @dnifty1
    @dnifty1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As a professional, if the first thing you are doing to address potential discrimination you are doing something wrong. Any employee is supposed to know how to address any potential discrimination at any job, whether for you personally or people behind you.
    Also, a professional should know how to progress their career and make sure that there is a clear record of goal setting, accomplishments and feed back on your performance throughout the year so that there are no surprises when time comes for promotions and other things. This is just basic career building. The problem is some companies are very laid back and don't have explicit policies on documenting goals, expectations and feedback on what you did right or wrong throughout the year. That is critical both for you as the employee to improve your weaknesses and maintain your strengths but also for assessing whether you are getting justly compensated and acknowledged for your actual performance based on clear communication. Likewise, it is your job to address discrimination if you feel that you are a victim of it and know the correct way to do it.

      @Shane-bx8ws 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AvecPoesie nope. It's called equality. Y'all preach that you want equality, yet Y'all don't want to give up your privileges. You just want to take away what privileges others allegedly have. Where are the white equalities for NAACP, BET, HBCU, BET Awards, freedom of speech, or even grant programs for school? There are none. That would be racist.

    • @AvecPoesie
      @AvecPoesie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Shane-bx8ws You are perilously misinformed. Historically Black Colleges and Universities were created precisely because black people were not permitted into other institutions of higher education due to the color of their skin. They exist because of centuries of racism and inequality rendered their creation necessary. BET commenced because other music chanels of the era refused to allow any reasonable amount of air time for the music of black artists. Even Michael Jackson struggled for play on MTV prior to the release of Thriller. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has for over a century endeavored to aid people of color (through their tireless legal defense, activism, and their publicity) who faced significant racial hatred and its resultant inequality. As long as there are white people bellowing about the ostensibly racist nature of BET and the like, there will be those angrily opposed to black people in more substantial ways. What began in Historically Black Colleges as a refuge for black people yearning for education also served Jewish professors, educators and students in the aftermath of WWII when anti-semitism was still abundant throughout the world. Black colleges understood the persecution of Jewish immigrants and allowed them in when other institutions refused. These schools are still here today to honor their history and provide a refuge for young, black learners that may have felt ostracized, marginalized, and unable to comfortably learn in schools they may not have felt welcome in. White students are welcome to apply to an HBCU. They do have a small number of white members of their student body. You are mistaken if you assume such schools are exclusionary to white people. BET has played white artists and televised interviews for Robin Thicke, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, and many white rappers. They are not exclusionary by any means. You are narrativizing petty grievances. Not seeing yourself in places and platforms created SPECIFICALLY because of the disenfranchisement of others is uneducated. It is embarrassingly ignorant.

    As a previous hiring manager, I used to hire black people, but after so many troubles with them, I finally stopped looking at obvious black resumes. I am hiring for team cohesion, not for drama. If I hire someone who is constantly looking for being slighted they will find it. Another item, is the perception of performance. Someone who may think they are "killing it" who may not really be performing at the expectation level, will be passed over. Make sure you are "killing it" within the parameters of expectations. I have had people who think they are performing well, but doing something that was not related to the job at hand. What we need is black people to realize that they are their own worst enemies in the workplace, but no one will tell them out of pity.
