  • Dr. Uché Blackstock and her twin sister, Oni Blackstock followed the path of their mother , Dr. Dale Blackstock, graduating from Harvard Medical School.
Not having the mentorship from her mom, who passed away while they were teenagers, Uché Blackstock was forced to see and face the realities of racism in medicine that met her in her career.
Dr. Uché Blackstock joins our host, Carol Jenkins to discuss her memoir, "Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons with Racism in Medicine".

My sister is a medical doctor for internal medicine which is considered prestigious in France. She faces racism from patients to colleagues all the time. It's heartbreaking to hear all these stories; I really feel for all my sisters & brother who have to fight racism on a daily basis in the healthcare industry

Before he passed. Derrick Bell, one of the creators of CRT, said racism was a permanent fixture in American life. He received flak galore but fast foward thirteen years later and it's still with us. If one goes back to the founding of the country our constitution created two classes of inhabitants, one class known as citizens and the other known as non citizens being individually 60% of a human. Seven decades later in the classic Supreme Court case Scott v. Sanford, the Chief justice of the Supreme court, Roger B. Taney, read the verdict which in part said blacks in the US had no rights a white person need respect. Nearly four decades later in Plessy v. Ferguson the court said it was lawful for whites to not allow blacks into their space. Subsequent court rulings overturned these but too late. From 1865 to 1964 Jim Crow laws did exactly what had been overturned. It is now 2024 and the acts continue but with sublety. The solution? BLACK COOPERATION AND UNITY among themselves. Where black America is concerned America has always been two nations. Blacks need to unite, in house, and decide what they can do for themselves with no outside help. They need to understand they have no friends except each other. Yet millions of them still believe they can exist with and among whites in peace on terms of equality. Not going to happen. There are exceptions with some genuinely fair minded whites but they pale in comparison to reality. Not all but many whites want blacks nowhere near them. They don't however want the distance to be too great for them to be unable to treat them as they please. Derrick Bell was right.

This decision had a negative impact on my health - I do have neurological issues.. As a Black Woman, I prefer a Black doctor but wouldn't assume that I will get better care just because the doctor is Black.

Both times that I got C-sections, I was being told that I was feeling pressure, not pain. I insisted that I was feeling pain. Fortunately, my husband was with me in the operating room and he raised his voice. I got relief with the first C-section. I did not get relief with the second one. The anesthesiologist told my husband that if he gave me any more morphine, I would go into respiratory failure. So I went through the rest of the surgery feeling all that pain. There were other instances where a doctor orders decided that I did not need the proper level of pain medication or any pain medication at all(i.e. a gynecological biopsy In 2013). Fortunately, those times are fewer now. I haven’t had a black doctor since 2008

Am I supposed to be grateful that someone who looks like me now can make money in a system that keeps me sick?!
We need doctors who will actually help us and lawyers who hold those who don't accountable. Not another consultancy that thrives on using ignorance as an excuse for indifference. Now calling out racism will cost you racist clients

This doesn't make sense and it frustrates me. The fact that this is a long, continuing issue shows the medical community are degenerates. They have no compassion and it's a slap to the face that they swore an oath to serve and provide health care to people.
What part of telling a doctor/nurse that I'm in pain being black means they don't need pain medication. Jesus Christ they are telling you (in English, our country's national language mind you) they are in pain???????? This is no different than any patient of race. It's pathetic and these people put any health care profession to shame... no sense of professionalism and decorum. Thank you for sharing your story. People need to see this video and read your book Dr. Blackstock (see people.. addressing someone by their status.. by their accomplishments is not that hard to do and shows respect and dignity).
